RICHARD- KARL KARLOVICH ZOMMER (1866-1939)A Street Market with Figures, near a ruined mosquesigned in cyrillic (lower right)oil on board13 1/2 x 16 1/2 in (34.3 x 41.8cm)The location depicted has traditionally been identified as SamarkandProvenance: Fountain Charles Bolton, Esq, by descent to his daughter Mollie Bolton,Worlingham. Surrey Thence to the present vendor The first known owner of this painting was Fountain Charles Bolton. He was manager for W.J. Bush & Co at their Moscow factory producing oils and essences for the British market At the outbreak of the Russian Revolution in 1917, Fountain sent his wife and four children out of Russia escaping by sledge across the ice to Sweden and then to England. Fountain Bolton remained in Moscow hoping to save the business but soon it became apparent that he had to flee.It was now impossible to take the same route as his wife and children. He and a friend managed to get a place on one of the last trains leaving Moscow and travelled east via Nizhny Novgorod into Siberia.Once in Siberia they had to change trains and make do with places in a goods truck with no windows. The circumstances in which Fountain Bolton is said to have acquired the painting by Zommer shortly thereafter, are outlined in a manuscript text written by his daughter Mollie Bolton in a biographical essay about her early life, titled 'The Early Years'.'Progress was very slow; sometimes they didn't move all day, often being stuck out in no-man's land in between stations. When stopping in village stations sometimes peasants came wanting to barter for any food travellers might have to spare. Father exchanged a loaf of bread for an oil painting of Samarkand (still in my possession) which he brought back home packed flat in the bottom of his suitcase'Fountain travelled on through Siberia and Mongolia to Vladivostock and thence Japan. From there he joined a Danish Red Cross ship (where he had to sign on as medical attendant in order to board) bound for Vancouver. He eventually returned via America to the UK. The painting by Zommer became a prized possession for Bolton and a memento of his extraordinary escape from the Bolsheviks.Richard Zommer, the artist, was a Russian of German origin, now remembered as something of an explorer artist. He studied at the Academy of Arts, St. Petersburg from 1884. Between 1890 and 1900 he travelled widely in central Asia. In the early 1900's he moved to Georgia and worked in the Caucasus Mountains, providing an invaluable record of life in that remote territory at the time. Later he travelled extensively in Kazakhstan, Georgia and Armenia between 1912 and 1917. During some of that time he taught and exhibited paintings at Tbilisi. Another Zommer painting with a colourful history, akin to the Brightwells example, which was acquired by a British army officer stationed in Tbilisi in 1915/6 and brought back rolled in an army map box to England shortly thereafter, was sold at Woolley & Wallis Auctioneers,Salisbury, lot 472 (titled 'Figures by a Mosque'), March 15th 2017. Zommer's paintings of street scenes are often set in the mostly Muslim territories of old Russia. There the artist found rich material in the colourful bazaars, mosques and street processions in towns along the Silk Route. His better known pictures of Samarkand include a view of the Shir-dor Mosque, Samarkand (sold Sotheby's, London lot 39 May 31 2006) and A street Market near the ruins of the Bibi-Khanyan Mosque, Samarkand (sold Christies, London lot 349 November 26 2008).In 1939 the Stalin regime forced Zommer to leave Georgia and no record of him has been found after that time. He is believed to have been interned and later died in a Siberian prison camp as part of Stalin's purge of non ethnic Russians.

"Chute's activity as an architect was confined to a small number of projects only but in them he established a distinct contribution in two different directions: one was as a significant figure in the early Gothic revival, the other as a classical designer of marked independence. As a member of Walpole's 'committee of taste' he played a leading role in the creation of the latter's celebrated Gothic villa of Strawberry Hill. Walpole later described him as 'an able geometrician and an exquisite architect, and of the purest taste both in the Grecian and Gothic styles' (Walpole, Corr., 21.263), and as 'my oracle in taste, the standard to whom I submitted my trifles, the genius that presided over poor Strawberry!' (Walpole, Corr., 24.209). Chute... Like Walpole... was a vivid and witty correspondent and conversationalist and a discriminating connoisseur of literature and the arts." - Oxford DNB.

Such early children's garments are rare, and particularly so in such a good state of preservation. A layette for a newborn in the 17th and early 18th century consisted of many pieces elaborately layered and pinned, and the practise of tightly swaddling a baby, often to a board, was believed to help keep the baby's limbs straight. *De Morgan (Evelyn, 1855-1919). The Angel of Death, 1885, gold coloured pastel and black chalk on dark grey-brown wove paper, depicting a young woman seated on a rocky stepped plinth, her eyes half-closed, and her arms placed on the left arm of an angel who stoops over her and carries a scythe, monogrammed 'EP' and dated 1885 in gold lower right, 44.5 x 36.5cm (17.5 x 14.5ins), mounted, framed and glazed, with remains of old manuscript label on backboard 'The Angel of Death, Not for sale, De Morgan, 1 The Vale, Kings Rd, Chelsea' Evelyn and William De Morgan lived at 1 The Vale in Chelsea for 22 years. At that time a number of artists resided in close proximity in and around the area of The Vale: the De Morgans rented their house to Walter Sickert and his Chelsea Life School when they were on their travels abroad; James Whistler lived at 2 The Vale, which was subsequently occupied by Charles Ricketts who began the Vale Press there; on the same side of the Vale, close to the King's Road, was a chapel which was for a time the studio of sculptor Thomas Stirling Lee; and others who were not far away include Augustus John, Cecil Hunt, John Da Costa and Charles Maresco Pearce. Evelyn De Morgan painted two oils titled 'The Angel of Death'. One was executed in 1880, and exhibited in 1881 at the Grosvenor Gallery, London, and it is now in the De Morgan Foundation ('Evelyn De Morgan, oil paintings', DMF, plate 8). The other, dated 1890, was destroyed in 1991 when a fire raged through Bourlet's art storage unit in London where some of the De Morgan Foundation's art collection was held (plate 37). This remarkable study was executed, therefore, in the interim period between these two works, whilst the artist was as yet unmarried. It is one of a small number of works by the artist executed in gold on dark wove paper. Apart from one such study in Leighton House Museum ('Victoria Dolorosa'), almost all other known studies in gold pastel are held by the De Morgan Foundation, and none, to our knowledge, has ever before appeared at auction. Only a small number of artists used this technique, Edward Burne-Jones being one of them. It is generally believed that such works were final detailed compositional studies. Given that the artist was so prolific and meticulous in producing studies for her full-scale oils, it is perhaps not surprising that this view has come into existence. However, the De Morgan Foundation acknowledges that 'These pieces can be considered works of art in their own right and it is apparent that Evelyn often sold them as such'. Given this, and the fact that our study post-dates the initial oil of the same subject it now seems quite certain that such a work was done either for the artist's own pleasure (as seems to be the case here), or as a gift for, or commission from, an admirer of the oil painting. It is interesting to note that in the original oil the female figure gazes upwards with unseeing eyes which are clearly open, whereas here the young woman's gaze is downwards with her eyes half-closed, as it is in the later oil painting of 1890. The De Morgans were very interested in spiritualism, and especially angels, as evidenced in much of the symbolism of Evelyn's work. In her initial oil painting, the gentleness of the angel's touch, and grateful embrace of the frail girl is underlined by the weeds symbolising a hard life, and the spring flowers indicating joy to come. Here, however, as is typical of Evelyn's studies in gold, the background detail is pared away, and the figures, in all their beauty, come into stark relief.(1)
