(Militaria, Illuminated manuscript) An ornate illuminated presentation manuscript, gifted to General Kurt von Briesen, Commanding Officer of the 30th Infantry Division Full brown suede with gilt tooled lettering to front board General von Briesen (and again in Cyrillic), pp.6 of decorative calligraphy and illumination, some wormholes to first leaf and last towards spine edge, done in a naive hand, artist unknown, circa 1940.The first page presents a hand-drawn map of Bulgaria, adorned with a painted Sovereign Arms of Bulgaria highlighted in gold gilt paint, small wormholes to spine edge; Followed by a large Third Reich Eagle, again painted in gilt gold; Third leaf with a medieval style ornament with gilt outline; Two page MS in Bulgarian with a decorative painted broader featuring two crests of The Bulgarian Union of Reserve Officers, signed by members of said union; Final leaf with a German translation of the previous again signed by the same members. The manuscript conveys a formal address from the Association of Former Officers of St. Sofia to General von Briesen, congratulating him on Germany’s conquest of Bulgaria. It reflects sentiments of admiration and gratitude, celebrating his role in what is described as the liberation of Bulgaria from past injustices."The day on which you marched into Neulli at the head of your division will be remembered as a special day in the very long and eventual history of Bulgaria""....Your Excellency, with considerable sacrifice you have loosed the shackles with which millions of human beings were bound by the blindness and hatred of wicked men....''We, the members of the.....are glad that fortune gave you the opportunity to lead your Division into Neuilli and through which action the injustice done to us has been wiped out.'An important artefact, with a singular history.

(Cornwall and WW2) A Remarkable Archive of WWII Letters (1942–1946) Melville Truran, No. 35 (Army Co-operation) Wing RAF This extensive collection of handwritten letters, spanning 1942 to 1946, was authored by Melville Truran, a soldier in the No. 35 (Army Co-operation) Wing of the Royal Air Force during World War II. Addressed primarily to his mother and sisters at Fair View Farm, Chacewater, these letters provide a vivid and deeply personal perspective on the life of a young RAF reconnaissance soldier. Truran's correspondence chronicles his experiences, including training, day-to-day routines, and interactions with fellow servicemen. While not directly involved in the D-Day landings, his letters recount the advance into enemy territory, observations on weather and conditions, and the Second Front’s progression. They trace movements from France, across the Rhine, and into Germany, offering insights into the contrasts between the British and Russian occupation zones.Though security constraints and the familial nature of the letters lend a degree of vagueness, Truran’s adventurous spirit as a 19-to-22-year-old shines through, revealing a life filled with resilience, discovery, and reflection. Between the lines, one can discern the excitement and challenges of his wartime journey, juxtaposed with charming details of farming life in wartime Cornwall.Written in manuscript form, the letters vary in condition but remain largely legible. This archive is a rich resource for historians and collectors, offering an unfiltered window into wartime experiences. Requiring further study and conservation, it presents an extraordinary opportunity to explore the untold stories of No. 35 Wing RAF during World War II.

Brigadier General CROZIER, F.P The Men I Killed A manuscript sent to Arthur Wragg with hand-written letter attached.Frederick Roberts Johnson and Arthur Wragg, two friends who met whilst training to become commercial artists, moved together to Polperro in 1924, staying at 'The House on the Props'. They had somewhat contrasting styles which somehow sometimes overlapped; Wragg's style was likened to David Low and Victor 'Vicky Weisz, sharing within his lifetime the same respect and public interest as the two aforementioned. His work was also regularly compared to that of Aubrey Beardsley, though Wragg's own heroes were Cruickshank, Albrecht Durer and William Blake, the latter being someone he was also compared to within his lifetime. Wragg's first book was hugely successful, having to be reprinted three times in one year and it became Book of The Year in America.Frederick Roberts Johnson was a very succesful commercial artist and was often the one who usually went to London in search of commissions for the pair. He often used the name 'Essex' or 'Sax', drawing funnies for Punch, Everyman magazine and Tribune, as well as advertisements for Lyons Tea Shops and producing dustjacket book illustrations for various authors. His style was more varied and experimental, with impressionism, cubism and abstract examples of his work within the sale.
