STATUETTE DE VIRUPA EN ALLIAGE DE CUIVRE DORÉTIBET, XVE/XVIE SIÈCLEInscribed in Tibetan along the rim of the base with dpal bi ru pa la na ma; 'Homage to the Honorable Virupa'.Himalayan Art Resources item no. 4804 13.6 cm (5 3/8 in.) highFootnotes:A GILT COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF VIRUPATIBET, 15TH/16TH CENTURY西藏 十五/十六世紀 銅鎏金毘魯巴像Published: Jan van Alphen, Cast for Eternity, Antwerp, 2003, p. 209, no. 71. Exhibited: Cast for Eternity, Antwerp Ethnographic Museum, Belgium, 12 April 2005 - 26 June 2005. Provenance: With Claude de Marteau, Brussels, by 1970sThis Tibetan sculpture pays homage to one of the great luminaries of Indian Buddhism, the c. 9th-century Buddhist master, Virupa. Like other mahasiddhas (great adepts) of the medieval period, Virupa spent years in formal Buddhist training before withdrawing from monastic life to follow his own path. He is credited with a hyper-efficient meditative practice known as lamdre ('The Path with the Result'), which was later introduced to Tibet by the Indian teacher Gayadhara (d. 1103) and became a central tantric tradition within the Sakya school. Famed both for his exceptional wisdom and his wild ways, the iconography of this image is rooted in a famous episode from Virupa's life when, pointing his finger at the sun, he stopped its rotation in order to avoid paying his bar tab. (See the same iconography in another image of Virupa of about the same period, previously in the Nyingjei Lam Collection, sold at Bonhams, Hong Kong, 7 October 2019, lot 802.)Formerly an abbot of Nalanda, Virupa received the 'Path', which is based mainly on the Hevajra Tantra, from the deity Vajra Nairatmya after giving up on decades of unsuccessful attempts at the Chakrasamvara Tantra. His subsequent rituals cost him his affiliation, as other members of the monastic hierarchy frowned upon his use of meat and alcohol. Banished from Nalanda, he wandered as a yogin, performing a number of miracles. In this 15th-to-16th-century work, the saint holds his left index finger to the sun while supporting himself with the left hand pressed behind him on a lotus seat covered with an antelope skin. Works showing the saint in this posture, full bodied, lounging with a gana-like effect are less frequently depicted, though these characteristics are shared by another Virupa published in Amy Heller, Tibetan Art, 1999, p. 164, no. 89. A Buddhist manuscript is folded into his chignon, and a floral garland falls around the shoulders, down the torso, and to his feet. A meditation strap—recalling his many hours in meditation—encircles his wide girth and the left shin. The figure is richly gilded and inset with turquoise stones. The face is painted gold and the lips, eyes, and eyebrows are likewise painted in the Tibetan manner, imparting a life-like appearance. The figure sits on a distinctive double lotus base with broad, rounded petals. An inscription and a delicately beaded border line the lower rim. Identical bases are shared by a set of six Sakya lamdre masters which sold at Bonhams, New York, 14 March 2017, lot 3262. In addition, two other portraits from the set, one of Damarupa (c.9th century) and the other of Chogyal Phagpa Lodro Gyaltsen (1235-80), are held in the Museum der Kulturen, Basel, published in von Schroeder, Indo-Tibetan Bronzes, 1981, pp. 456-7, nos. 126F-G. The present Virupa very likely belongs to this set also.A baseplate, secured by a rim beneath the seat, bears a double thunderbolt (visvavajra) design similar to that on a c. 15th century Milarepa sculpture from the Nyingjei Lam Collection sold at Sotheby's, New York, 21 March, 2023, lot 108.Bonhams would like to thank Jane Casey for her assistance in preparing this lot.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Keith Haring (1958-1990), Manuscript Image Size: 8 1/2 by 11 1/8 in. (21 by 28 cm.) All measurements are approximate. Signed (lower right), with Certificate Keith Allen Haring (May 4, 1958 - February 16, 1990) was an American artist whose pop art emerged from the New York City graffiti subculture of the 1980s. His animated imagery has "become a widely recognized visual language". Much of his work includes sexual allusions that turned into social activism by using the images to advocate for safe sex and AIDS awareness. In addition to solo gallery exhibitions, he participated in renowned national and international group shows such as documenta in Kassel, the Whitney Biennial in New York, the Sao Paulo Biennial, and the Venice Biennale. The Whitney Museum held a retrospective of his art in 1997. Haring's popularity grew from his spontaneous drawings in New York City subways-chalk outlines of figures, dogs, and other stylized images on blank black advertising spaces. After gaining public recognition, he created colorful larger scale murals, many commissioned. He produced more than 50 public artworks between 1982 and 1989, many of them created voluntarily for hospitals, day care centers and schools. In 1986, he opened the Pop Shop as an extension of his work. His later work often conveyed political and societal themes- anti-crack, anti-apartheid, safe sex, homosexuality and AIDS-through his own iconography. Haring died on February 16, 1990, of AIDS-related complications. In 2014, he was one of the inaugural honorees in the Rainbow Honor Walk in San Francisco, a walk of fame noting LGBTQ people who have "made significant contributions in their fields". In 2019, he was one of the inaugural 50 American "pioneers, trailblazers, and heroes" inducted on the National LGBTQ Wall of Honor within the Stonewall National Monument in New York City's Stonewall Inn. From the library of Ginsberg's UK publisher, Tom Maschler. In his autobiography Maschler recounts the occasion of the writing of this poem. "The hills surrounding my cottage are dotted with sheep and Allen saw us as just two more sheep below the sky. He was immensely moved by the the landscape and in the afternoon, still heavily under the influence of the drug [the pair had taken LSD earlier that day] he began to write a poem called 'Wales Visitation'."
Woolf (Virginia).- Dickinson (Violet).- A sammelband of 19 printed works, Dickinson's engraved bookplate to pastedown, manuscript 'Contents Page' and other manuscript instances on some titles noting the author, short tear to first page of 'Durham School', hinge cracked, original buckram with red morocco spine label, faded, upper joint cracked but holding firm, chips to spine ends, 4to, [1920s].⁂ Rare Woolf association material from Violet Dickson (1865-1948), a close friend and possible lover of Virginia Woolf. Dickinson became close to Woolf especially after her father's death, and became one of the first pivotal influences in Woolf's early adult life. Their relationship - though unconfirmed whether it was sexual or not - was at least, according to Hermione Lee, "playfully erotic": "The teasing jokes, the demands for attention, the confiding of secrets, were part of an extortionate appeal for petting and mothering. Violet was her woman." Lee points out that Dickinson also played an important role in her writing: "She used Violet as her sounding-board for her evolving ideas about how to live, how to talk and how to write." After her marriage to Leonard, Violet Dickinson saw very little of Virginia, however they kept up correspondence. On 8th December 1936 Virginia wrote: "All I beg of you, is don't let anybody else read those letters". Virginia destroyed the letters from Violet but she kept hers and they were found when she died in 1948. - Hermione Lee, Virginia Woolf (1996).

T. Prince (1912-2003), known for his much-anthologised war poem "Soldiers Bathing" (1942). The works contain records of his education and serious reading in the 1930s, when he was studying at Balliol College, Oxford University, and suggest how he was developing influences and style which would be important in his later works. Extracts include "early English alliterative Poems", Scandinavian Influence in English", "Chaucer's Language", "Notes on Miscellaneous Words", "The Language of Shakespeare", "Trinity Term, 1932" etc.

Searching for the weak spots you don't pull your punches; you expose the vices but then, good heavens, turn them into the virtues they were aiming for. Not only that, you ask the major question, Why India, why India then? And answer it better than I could have hoped anyone could or would...", folds, the first lightly toned; and another early typed letter signed by Scott in the capacity of a company secretary, 1948, 4to (3)⁂ An excellent group of letters from Paul Scott, scarce in commerce. The first revealing a personable side to the writer and his connection to family. Another is addressed to H.R.F. Keating (1926-2011), who at this early point in his career was a journalist working primarily for The Times. Later Keating would publish his most notable series of novels featuring Inspector Ghote, and would become a reknown English crime fiction writer. The last letter is with The Falcon Press letterhead, thanking the recipient for her praise of a recently published work by the press. Here Scott signs it in the capacity as 'Secretary' to the company - his first novel was still four years in the future.
