Printed "Kas-noot", recto with the denomination "Goed voor 4 Ryxsds:" in Dutch, Sinhala and Tamil typeset, within border and V.O.C. marks and the arms of Colombo in corners, and with the signature in pen of the last governor of the island Johan Gerard van Angelbeek (1794-96), Abraham Samlant (Negotie Boekhouder) and 1 unidentified signature, verso dated in print "Kolombo den 1. January 1796", and w. manuscript "N. Eight. Bearing interest 3 p.cent p. annum" above black rectangular stamped seal of Colonel James Stuart in the middle of signature George Gregory in pen (see explanation below), 8.8 x 10.4 cm. Middle fold, some pinholes and tiny tears. Not in Landwehr, V.O.C. Extremely rare "Kas noot", which remained valid for 116 years, and this copy has not been cancelled (see the two examples of "Kredit brieven" in this auction). Noted in pen on the tiny leaf are only 5 dates at which the interest was actually paid, from 15 February 1864 to 15 February 1868. Possibly, the note still retains its value for the British state; we could not verify this. The history of this "Kas noot": "After the British Invasion of Ceylon in 1795 the Dutch surrendered to the British, Trincomalee on 1795 August 26th, Jaffna on 1795 September 27th. Doubts arose among the populace about the ability of the Dutch Government to redeem the Kredit Brieven owing to the threatened investment of Colombo by the British. By Plakaat of 1795 December 18th Notice was given to issue Paper Money of smaller denominations 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10 Rix-Dollars. Called Kas Nooten the notes were issued dated 1796 January 1st. The British under Article 6 of the Capitulation of Colombo, on 1796 February 15th accepted the liability for up to £50,000 (i.e. 468,750 Ryxd) of Kredit Brieven and Kas Nooten still in Circulation and pay interest at 3% per Annum, payable half yearly. Notes [including ours] were Endorsed in English in pen with 3 percent p. annum on this Kredit Brief payable by the British Government of Ceylon under the condition of the Sixth article of the Capitulation of Columbo and on back of Kas Nooten Bearing Interest 3 percent for Annum. Below a Black rectangular Seal of COL.STUART with Persian text in middle of Signature Geo. Gregory over Reg. Colonel James Stuart led the British troops to take Ceylon from the Dutch. George Gregory was collector for Colombo for the British. (...) The Dutch promissory notes taken over by the British Government in 1796, were never called in. (...) After obtaining the approval of the Secretary of State and protracted negotiations with the holders the Government bought in the 130 [remaining] notes in 1912, for a sum of Rs. 13,890 and cancelled them, thus wiping off finally a permanent charge on public funds." (Dutch Ceylon Paper Money 1785-96, online article). "The proclamation [of December 18th, 1795] rehearses that owing to the threatened investment of Colombo by the British doubts had arisen among the populace about the ability of the Government to redeem the Kredit Brieven and reassures them on this issue. As the Kredit Brieven was for large payments, the Kas Nooten (currency notes) were issued for the convenience of the public, redeemable in the same way, but not endorsed." (Dutch Ceylon 1796 Kolumbo Kas Nooten, illustrated online article). We thank Burgersdijk and Niermans for their help with this description and that of the two similar other V.O.C. items in this auction.

Minor wear, some foxing, some crease and folding lines, overall presenting well.Provenance: Collection of Robert and Isabelle de Strycker. Inside the passepartout inscribed, 'Poemes d'eleves de Bante Takimare fame prof. de danse pour la arigratuler. Taketou portaut la jeuue Teruko.' Robert de Strycker (1903-1968) was a French engineer who specialized in metallurgy. He was a Stanford graduate, a professor at the University of Leuven, a director of the Institute of Metallurgy at the Universite Catholique de Louvain, and one of the most influential members of the faculty of applied sciences. After World War II, he made large contributions to France's post-war recovery. Robert and his wife Isabelle (1915-2010) first encountered Chinese art at the British Museum during a stay in London in the 1930s. Enamored with the style and beauty, they both decided to study and collect Japanese and Chinese works of art. In 1938 they eventually began to build their collection, buying from Belgian, Parisian, and English dealers. They kept close contact with the famous English collector Sir Harry Garner (1891-1977) and noted Czech collector and expert Fritz Low-Beer (1906-1976). In 1964, the couple lent 174 objects from their collection to the Belgian city of Leuven's museum for an exhibition titled Oude kunst in Leuvens Privebezit ('Old Art in Private Collections in Leuven'), and in 1967 they lent around thirty Japanese objects to the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels for their exhibition Kunst van Japan im belgischen Privatverzameingen ('Japanese Art in Belgian Private Collections').The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter is considered the oldest surviving monogatari, and though its exact date of composition is unknown, the oldest surviving manuscript dates back to 1592. It tells the story of Kaguya-hime, princess from the moon, who was found as a baby inside a bamboo stalk by an old bamboo harvester. The bamboo cutter, Taketori no Okina, and his wife raised the princess as their own. After discovering the princess, the harvester is blessed with immense wealth, finding a nugget of gold in every bamboo stalk he cuts after finding Kaguya-hime. The young girl grows up to be the most beautiful woman in all of Japan. Suitors come from far and wide to compete for her hand, but none can complete the difficult tasks she puts before them. Finding no suitor, the princess returns to her heavenly realm.Museum comparison:Compare a related suimono print with floral blossoms and a poem, by Matsukawa Hanzan and stamped with the identical seal, in the British Museum, accession number 2018,3007.17.

For use at members banquets and prestigious occasions, hosted within the historic 'Stationers' Hall', Ave Maria Lane, in the City of London. It would either be placed in front of the Master on the top table, or clearly exhibited during ceremonial occasions and Court meetings.Henceforth held at 'Stationers' Hall' since 1924, up until the present day.Introduction to the 'Stationers' Company'The 'Worshipful Company of Stationers' and Newspaper Makers', also known as the 'Stationers' Company', has represented publishing and communications professionals since 1403. Originally formed to represent members of a manuscript-based book trade, the 'Stationers' Company' rose to prominence with Caxton's introduction of the printing press to England in 1476. As the subversive potential of this new technology was recognised, successive English governments during the turbulent sixteenth and seventeenth centuries enlisted the Stationers' help in regulating the press, making the Company a dominant force in the publishing landscape for some time to come. The Stationers' embraced their position, fully participating in the pomp and pageantry of the City of London. Rebuilt in the 1670s on its original foundations after the Fire of London ravished its medieval structure, 'Stationers' Hall' is a testament to the Company's rich social and cultural life over the centuries. Today the headquarters of a vibrant professional membership organisation, in the Hall's fabric, fittings and fixtures are inscribed the history of a London Livery Company where tradition and innovation have always gone hand in hand. Lot ResearchThis is the present full armorial of the 'Worshipful Company of Stationers' and Newspaper Makers'. Created in 1403 as the 'Worshipful Company of Stationers', this has been their official title since the incorporation of the Newspaper Makers in 1937. The arms were granted in 1557 to the then 'Worshipful Company of Stationers' but without crest and supporters, which should only officially appear after 1951. However the Company did unofficially adopt a crest and supporters from the eighteenth century and crests have been found to appear from 1789, and supporters from 1834. These are useful dating attributes. The Stationers' Company's motto is 'Verbum Domini Manet in Aeternum', Latin for 'The Word of the Lord endures forever'.In terms of the provenance of this piece on offer, Court Orders for 1st December 1925 note: 'Mr Herbert Fitch (Master 1922/23) ... said that when he was Upper Warden the Court on the 4th day of April 1922 resolved on his proposition 'that it is desirable that a Standard Emblem or Device be adopted.'' Consequently, he decided to 'provide and present to the Company a piece of plate embodying the approved design in a permanent and artistic form.' 'The work of art which he asked the Court to accept was of silver gilt and consisted of a pillar and base carrying the Arms and Crest of the Company (which were shown in enamels of correct Heraldic colours) flanked on either side by the angels which had been the supporters for over 100 years.''That the Court of Assistants do offer to Mr Herbert Fitch their most cordial thanks for his unique and valuable gift.'Herbert Fitch (1849-1933) established a respected printing business on Bury Street, in the City of London. In 1922 he received the honour of being elected as Master of the 'Stationers' Company', and was also an esteemed member of Lloyds. After a full life, he passed away at the age of 84 and was duly buried at Brompton Cemetery. As a wealthy business owner, his life was commemorated with a Grade 2 listed tomb made of Portland Stone and green marble columns. Over time, his wife Jeannie and their three sons were laid to rest with him. His son, also named Herbert, was a member of Special Branch Police and his memoirs detail how he listened to a secret meeting by Lenin and his comrades, whilst hiding in a pub cupboard.Literature'Stationers' Hall' Court records, accessed via the Stationers' Company archivist.Friends of Brompton Cemetery,'Tomb of Herbert Fitch', accessed 26/10/23 via https://brompton-cemetary.org.ukFor further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Hardy (Thomas), A.H. Evans and T.H. Tilley. Play scripts for individual parts for 'The Hardy Players', comprising 'The Mellstock Quire' 10 parts [1910]; 'The Woodlanders' 9 parts [1913]; 'A Desperate Remedy' 7 parts [1922]; 'Tess of the d'Urbervilles' 20 parts [1924]; Mumming Play [?The Play of St.George] 1923, together 47 parts, typescripts, some in red & black, some with additions or corrections in manuscript, underlinings in red ink, occasional spotting or soiling, some with ink stamp of Dramatic Typing of Covent Garden, stapled in coloured wrappers varying as to play, one part in 'Tess' lacking wrappers, another with upper wrapper torn, rubbed and soiled, a few creases, [Purdy Appendix VI p.351], most oblong 8vo last 4to, [?Dorchester], [1910-24].⁂ Fascinating group of scripts for mostly minor parts (but including both Tess and Angel Clare) in adaptations of Hardy's Wessex novels. In 1908 the Dorchester Debating and Dramatic Society performed a dramatisation of Hardy's Trumpet-Major, and produced a different story each year until 1924, apart from during and just after the First World War. In 1916 they became 'The Hardy Players', with the early works adapted by A.H.Evans and later on by T.H.Tilley, a local builder and stone mason. Hardy wrote only the scripts for The Queen of Cornwall, Tess of the d'Urbervilles and the mumming play of St.George for The Return of the Native but made suggestions for scenarios etc. and attended rehearsals. The plays were performed by amateurs in Dorchester with some performances in Weymouth and/or London. On the 100th birthday of the last remaining Hardy Player, Norrie Woodhall, whose sister Gertrude played the original Tess and whose mother had inspired the original character, she requested that the tradition should be revived. As a result 'The New Hardy Players' formed in 2005 and continue to celebrate Hardy's work.

It became a place of pilgrimage because of its possession of a cross made from fragments of the true cross. According to Matthew Paris it was brought to England in 1223 by a monk serving in the chapel of the Emperor of Byzantine in Constantinople. The monk absconded on the emperor's death and brought it to England, and made it a condition of bestowing it on any monastery that he and his two sons should be admitted as monks. The monks of St. Albans and other great houses demurred, but the monastery of Bromholm believed the priest's story and agreed to his terms, and the cross was set up in their church. The priory was suppressed in 1537.
