Early Japanese manuscript book by Honyo (1707-1789), the 17th priest of the Buddhist Jodo Shinshu sect. Along with an early lacquered document box. The Jodo Shinsu sect, also known as Shin Buddhism or True Pure Land Buddhism, is the most widely practiced form of Buddhism in Japan.Height: 9 3/4 in x width: 6 3/4 in x depth: 2 1/4 in.Condition: Heavy wear throughout. Toning and fraying to sheets. Losses to the cover. However, it appears there is no loss to the inner sheets; all pages are kept. There are some inscriptions that are covered with white substances and written over them. However, it does not appear to be a modern restoration, given two reasons: 1. The white substances covering the original inscription are not noticeably fluorescent under UV light. 2. The Japanese inscriptions that are written over the white substance appear to be written in the same era as when the rest of the book was written. It is a possibility that the aforementioned parts were amended after the original book was written; however, in such instances, the alteration appears to be made in the same era when the book was written- it does not appear to be a modern alteration or restoration. Framed; height: 20 1/8 in x width: 17 5/8 in.Condition: Heavy discoloration throughout the sheet. Wear to all edges. The left margin may have been trimmed. Losses and discoloration to the pigment throughout. Areas of the skimming to the top layer of the paper throughout. Along the left top and bottom corners there are large creases visible. Along the lower right margin there is a rectangular piece of tape that measures 2 inches x 3/4 inch. The page is floated in the frame. Light wear to the frame. Framed under glass. Not inspected out of frame.

Antique Thai chest or manuscript cabinet, likely Rattanakosin period, 18th century. With tapering black and red lacquered gilt wood. Excellent for holding a Bencharong porcelain collection.Height: 69 in x width: 34 3/4 in x depth: 30 1/2 in.Condition: The cabinet is structurally sound and stable. The doors open and close smoothly. There is some rubbing and fading of the painted decoration throughout. Some losses along the handles as well as the legs, visible in the lot listing. Small to medium chips, scuffs, and scratches throughout consistent with age and use. Along the back right vertical support there is separation to the joints, visible in the lot listing. There are some small wormholes throughout, visible when the doors are opened and the light comes through. The color of the finials appears to match that of the interior, though they have faded somewhat. Some wear to the textile lining of the interior.

This set includes Jean Grosjean's French translation of the Qur'an in two volumes, featuring 42 illustrations by Zenderoudi, preceded by a study by the French Islamic scholar and sociologist, Jacques Berque. A separate canvas box includes a facsimile reproduction of the unique manuscript of the Qur'an by Ibn Bawwab, and a booklet of commentary on the manuscript by D. S. Rice. Folio, 56cm, quarter crushed morocco lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, vibrant pink endpapers. Contents well-preserved, clean and bright, a few faint marginal spots, lithographic frontispiece spotted, binding bumped & scuffed at corners/edges. A unique and exquisitely illustrated manuscript book created by John Wood as 'a keepsake' for his sister Elizabeth, 1863. Octavo, beginning with a dedication to Elizabeth and a self-portrait, 209pp on 418 leaves, illustrated throughout, bound in half crushed morocco with raised bands, marbled boards and marbled endpapers. The first part of the book recounts his travels, including a visit to the Crystal Palace in 1851, as well as historic vignettes & legends; the second part is titled 'The Story of an Artist's Life' and tells the story of his triptych [in this sale], which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1852; the third part is titled 'A Retrospect' and is autobiographical, explaining his deep, lifelong love for art, with one section on 'The friendship of Sir Thomas Lawrence'; the fourth part is a series of historical, classical and Shakespearean subjects, followed by an index to the designs. Almost every page is embellished with fine ink drawings illustrating the subjects, and many pages are entirely self-contained pictures. The craftsmanship of the work is staggering. Thomas Berthelet was King's Printer and King's Bookbinder for Henry VIII, and this book was printed during the reign of Henry VIII. Recorded as folio but bound in sixes, 26.3cm, title page provided in manuscript [probably during 18th century], bearing armorial bookplate for Richard Barwell of Stansted [an early trader with the East India Company], 'To the Reder' and 'The Tabul' in 9pp., 'The Prologue of the Translator' in 4pp., main text paginated once per leaf from 1-386, lacking p.387, the final leaf [p.388] present but with loss at top edge affecting first two lines of text (but not affecting printer's device verso), pagination erratic in places but textually right and following on with correct signatures at bottom. Contents mostly very good with general age toning, a few pale marks in places, the first couple of leaves of 'Tabul' worn & loose, panelled calf binding heavily worn with boards detached, but an honest example [STC, 2nd ed., 1537]

Of note is a small study for The Ascension, mounted with a letter informing Wood that his design has won the competition for St. James's, Bermondsey [see notes below], plus a larger, more finished study for the same; a study for Joseph Expounding the Dream of Pharaoh's Chief Butler and Baker in Prison, mounted with manuscript caption recording this as the 'Gold Medal Picture at the Royal Academy 1825'; a study for Adam and Eve Lamenting Over the Dead Body of Abel, signed & dated l.l., 1821, captioned as 'Gold Medal Model at the Society of Arts 1822'; a study for The Baptism of Christ in the Jordan, mounted with a letter informing Wood that this picture has won 'the £1000 prize' in the exhibition; a study for Elizabeth in the Tower After the Death of Her Sister Queen Mary, mounted with a letter awarding Wood the silver medal for this work, plus a handwritten copy of the minutes from the RA council on reaching this decision. Large folding engraved "Chart of Great Britain & Ireland, with the Coasts of France, Spain, Portugal &c: Exhibiting all the Channels, Harbors[sic], Bays & Islands, with the exact Bearings and Distances Between any two Places" by John Stockdale, hand-coloured in outline, 12-pages followed by 4-pages of publisher's advertisements (chart repaired with very slight loss, short tear without loss, some spotting to B2, some light mainly marginal spotting and staining to other leaves). Contemporary plain wrappers, stitched (some fraying). Provenance: Pasted onto the back of the upper wrapper is a contemporary printed sheet, with "4 Days Reading" in autograph at the top, and with 3 printed columns headed, respectively, "When received. Order of Circulation. When sent away", containing a list of 18 printed names and the day and month, but not the year, of their respective borrowing dates added in manuscript - almost invariably for 4 days - and a printed note at the bottom, "To be returned to the Steward", signed "Wm. [?]Briggs". The title page [mis]spells the author's surname 'Dumourier'. The printed note on the map, repeated on the title page, that the chart has "... the exact Bearings and Distances between any Two Places", is not borne out in reality since no distances appear on the chart, nor does it even have a scale. VERY RARE, with no copy of this, or any other edition, in the British Library.

Rome: Ex Officina Dominici Basæ [On colophon:] Apud Franciscum Zanettum, 1581. Large 8vo (206 x 145mm). Large woodcut armillary sphere on title, numerous diagrams and initials, some historiated, tables, large woodcut printer's device at the end (lacks all before title [i.e. blanks], title quiet heavily spotted and with repair on verso, variable staining and spotting throughout). Modern old-style vellum with yapp edges, title in manuscript on spine, new endpapers. First published in 1570, this work by "the Euclid of the 16th-century" became a standard textbook on astronomy and went through several editions. It demonstrates the Jesuit author's continued avowal of a strict geocentric model of the universe, even some 27 years after the first publication of Copernicus's De revolutionibus in 1543. Despite this, when Galileo published the Sidereus nuncius in 1610, Clavius, after initial scepticism, came round to accepting many of its tenets, and these were incorporated into later editions of In sphaeram. Adams C2100; Houzeau & Lancaster I, 2678; cf. PMM 113 (citing Galileo's Sidereus nuncius): "[Galileo's] discoveries in the Sidereus nuncius did not prove that Copernicus was correct. Not even his later discoveries (of sunspots and the phases of Venus) did this; nor did any of Galileo's later polemical writings. But Galileo did prove that the Aristotelian-Ptolemaic world-view must be wrong. Even his clerical opponents (like the Jesuit astronomers Clavius and Scheiner) were soon compelled to admit it"; Sommervogel II, 1212.

Using the wet-plate process he photographed the Clarence River district and its Aboriginals, producing albums in 1875 and 1876. He then ... went to Melbourne where he opened a studio in Collins Street. He soon won repute for his society, theatre and landscape portraits. In 1880 he photographed the capture of the Kelly gang at Glenrowan ... In 1885 Lindt went with Sir Peter Scratchley's expedition to the Protectorate of British New Guinea as official photographer. He presented an album of his New Guinea photographs to the Indian and Colonial Exhibition in London in 1886. He went to Europe to publish his Picturesque New Guinea (London, 1887) ... He was elected a judge at the international photographic exhibition at Frankfurt, received a gold medal from the Photographic Association of Vienna and became a member of the Royal Geographical Society, London" (from the Australian Dictionary of Biography). The recipient of this presentation copy was Captain Arthur Mostyn Field (1855-1950), an officer in the Royal Navy who rose to the rank of Admiral. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1905 in recognition of his work as a "distinguished Hydrographic Surveyor" chiefly in Australia, the Pacific Islands and the South China Seas.

FIRST EDITION. RARE. Please see the note on completeness below.ROSSETTI, Donato (1633-86).  La Figura della Neve. Turin: "Per la Vedova Gianelli, e Domenico Paulino," 1681. 8vo in 4s (179 x 113mm). Half title, woodcut ornament on title, initial, 7 etched illustrations of snowflakes by Donato Rossetti, 3 of which full-page (the final leaf [E4], paginated 40 on the verso, followed by an old blank leaf [see note], some very light mainly marginal staining, some minor worming at gutter of a few leaves, not affecting letters). Contemporary calf (crudely rebacked and rubbed, particularly at the corners, inner hinges split or reinforced). Provenance: Marchesa di Ravarolo (old signatures at lower margin of 2 pages); remnants of old manuscript library labels on front and rear pastedowns; later pencil annotation on the front blank stating [?erroneously] "lacks last leaf ...". FIRST EDITION of this pioneering study of snowflakes which was the first to represent them as hexagonal platelet crystals. The work built on the earlier and inconclusive studies on the same subject undertaken by Kepler and Descartes and took as its model related microscopic investigations of Robert Hooke. The author, a Tuscan natural philosopher, mathematician and canon of Livorno Cathedral, is not listed in the DSB. Like the copy in the "Biblioteca Comunale Labronica", which is collated as ending on [E4] (i.e. p.40) without any suggestion that it is incomplete, the copies in the BL and "The Catalogue of the Books, Manuscripts, Maps and Drawings in the British Museum (Natural History)" also consist of just 40-pages, but are, according to their speculative catalogue entries, "apparently imperfect". Although p.40 in the present copy ends mid-line, and with an apparent semi-colon [illustrated], it has, unlike any other page of text in the book, no catchword, suggesting it is the final page. Since all of the few recorded copies end similarly at p.40, we are reasonably confident, despite its abrupt conclusion, that the book is complete, but our lack of complete certainty compels us to sell it, with regret, not subject to return. RARE.

Cheshire Weaver.- Butterworth (James, weaver, of Stockport, Cheshire) A True and Particular Account Collected from the own hand-writing of James Butterworth, Weaver of Stockport in Cheshire, contemporary manuscript fair copy, drophead title and 40pp., some staining, browned, old wrappers, edges chipped, 4to, [c. 1790s].⁂ "Apprehended on the 12th August 1786 for stealing a black gelding ... received sentence of Death, wonderfully saved from the fatal tree ... afterwards reprieved and Transported for Seven Years to Botany Bay but remained on board the Hulks ... again arrested ... transported for Life ... 1794." - Butterworth.A detailed account of Butterworth's misfortunes and experiences on the prison hulks and elsewhere, in an unknown hand, with comment at the end that Butterworth was never heard of again and that he was probably sent to Botany Bay and clearly born under ''an unlucky Planet''.

Included with the lot is a manuscript pen and ink list of the prints, probably in Gill's hand, which describes the number of variant editions and their prices and dates, as well as identifying the nude: 'Portrait of Mrs Gibbings/ (nude, sitting in chair)'.

Ashendene Press.- Vita di Santa Chiara Vergine composta per Vgolino Verino Cittadino Florentino, Reprinted from the Original Manuscript with an Introduction and Notes by Walter W. Seton, signed and inscribed by the printer "G.H.Blore from C.H.StJ.Hornby June, 1921" on front free endpaper, one of 236 copies on paper, printed in red and black in Subiaco type with initials in blue, first two leaves of the original manuscript reproduced in collotype facsimile, original limp vellum with ties, spine titled in gilt, uncut, an excellent copy preserved in modern cloth drop-back box, [Hornby XXX; Franklin p.240], 8vo, Ashendene Press, 1921.⁂ The original manuscript, written in a late XVth century hand for the nuns of St.Clare, belonged to Lord Vernon and was bought by Hornby at the sale of Vernon's library at Sotheby's in 1918. "Another neglected Ashendene book: owners should take a more intelligent interest than to close it after admiring type...This and Omar Khayyam are the two Ashendenes which rank as serious critical editions". Sink the Bismarck.- Vanneck (Sir Peter, Royal Navy officer, fighter pilot, engineer, stockbroker and politician, Lord Mayor of London, 1922-99) Journal for the Use of Midshipmen, autograph manuscript, printed title signed and 279pp., printed matter at beginning, numerous pen and ink maps and diagrams (some folding) and several photographs, browned, 6pp. incomplete draft typescript "for Peter Scott's Book the battle of the narrow seas" loosely inserted, original cloth, rubbed and marked, printed paper label signed by Vanneck on upper cover, joints splitting, gilt morocco label on spine, spine faded, folio, 1939-42.⁂ A first hand account by a midshipman serving on HMS KIng George V of the attack and sinking of the Bismarck."27.5.41 We sighted Bismarck... on the starboard bow... and... opened fire. She was coming towards us... and she fired her 15-in at [HMS] Rodney and, it appeared her 5.9-in at us... . We engaged her... . I did not like her look. It was something like a pike with her raked bow and formidable looking turrets. Altogether we fired seventy five broadsides... . At 11.01 as all the world knows the Bismarck turned over and sank. Johnson, 8 vol., first Johnson edition, first issue with Corbet listed as the second bookseller and Johnson's preface unpaginated, all but vol. 1 & 2 with half-titles, engraved portrait frontispiece, vol. 3 with worming to lower margin of first few sig., a few times just touching text, vol. 4 with worming up to O5, mostly to upper margin but the occasional worm hole/trace within text, 2P6 with small hole touching printed footnote, vol. 8 with small worm trace to inner gutter of first few ff., some light browning, occasional spotting or light staining, but generally clean copies, 18th century prize bookplate and contemporary calf with arms of Trinity College Dublin to upper and lower covers, spines with red and black morocco labels (little chipped), spines with contents listed in ink manuscript, one or two small worm holes, a few chips to ends and old glue repairs, vol. 4 & 6 covers worn with loss to arms, rubbed and scuffed, some joints split but holding, 8vo, for J. and R. Tonson, C. Corbet [&tc], 1765.⁂ A landmark in Shakespeare studies.

Greene (Graham) Loser Takes All, first edition, signed presentation inscription from the author "For Eddie - this complete abortion, but I'm so tired of Good + Evil. with love, Graham, Jan 30 1955" on front free endpaper, lightly spotted, manuscript correction in later hand to p.81, original cloth, spine and top edge lightly faded, dust-jacket, one short closed tear to upper panel tail repaired with tape verso, otherwise a very sharp and bright copy, [Wobbe A34], 8vo, 1955.⁂ An intriguing inscription to Edward Sackville-West, referencing Greene's first published departure from his usual moralist themes to an experiment with comedy. Though Greene and Sackville-West missed each other at Oxford, their literary careers overlapped from the mid-20s, and both converted to Catholicism. Sackville-West was one of very few whose literary opinion Greene respected. Loser Takes All is thus "an attempt to link comedy (especially satire, parody and burlesque) to the religious thriller" - Wobbe p.102.

Ipswich Unitarian Meeting House.- Archive of documents concerning the Unitarian Meeting House in Ipswich, including: 19 deeds and documents on vellum and a reverse calf early 19th manuscript of St Nicholas Street Meeting-House Minute & Account Book, reverse entries, etc., and a substantial series of documents beginning in the 17th century, folds, yellowed, v.s., v.d., 1650-1873 (20 pieces).

Royal Mint.- Goldsmiths' Company and the Trial of the Pyx, manuscript in secretary hand, loose leaves, 20pp., margins chipped with small loss, folds, browned, folio, 2nd July - 29th December 1681.⁂ Large quantities of silver and gold deposited at the Royal Mint in the Tower of London by merchants for the purpose of producing coins. The listing includes on 5 August 1681 the "Triall of the Pix", an ancient ceremony in which random coins from the Royal Mint are weighed and assayed at Goldsmith's Hall in the City of London. The Trial of the Pyx still continues and is conducted before the Chancellor of the Exchequer, financial leaders, representatives of The Royal Mint and freemen of the The Goldsmiths' Company.

So like us, yet unstable with ever changing mood out-masquerading all masqueraders, all women; terrible, or as beautiful as crushed sapphires, glittering. LOUIS XI: (1423-1483) King of France 1461-83. D.S., Louis, one page (vellum), slim oblong folio, Pont-de-l'Arche, 20th June 1481, in Middle French. The manuscript document is addressed to the Treasurers of France and is a warrant for them to reimburse Jehan Lassavoire, ordinary receiver of Rouen, the sum of three hundred and thirty livres tournois. Signed by the King at the foot and countersigned by Guillaume Briconnet (1445-1514) French Cardinal and statesman who served as Superintendent of Finances for the Province of Languedoc under King Louis XI. An area of loss to the lower right edge of the document has been neatly replaced, and with some minor staining and light overall age wear. Lightly tipped to the upper edge of the verso to a folio page removed from an album. About VG

Lot 1104

CHARLES VIII: (1470-1498) King of France 1483-98. A rare D.S., Charles, one page (vellum), oblong folio, Lyon, 1st March 1496, in Middle French. The manuscript document is addressed to Jehan Lalemant, receiver general of finances in the Duchy of Normandy, and is a warrant to pay Charles Depontoy the sum of one hundred gold crowns, granted above and besides the pledges, pensions and benefits he already receives, in order for him to acquire a house in Paris. Signed by the King at the foot and countersigned by Hobineau. Autographs of King Charles VIII are rare in any form as a result of an accident which left him in a coma, dying nine hours later at the young age of 27. A small area of loss to the upper left edge and a second area of loss to the lower right edge of the document have been neatly replaced, and with some minor staining (slightly affecting the King's signature) and light overall age wear. LOUIS XII: (1462-1515) King of France 1498-1515 and King of Naples 1501-04. D.S., Loys (a fine, attractive example), one page (vellum), oblong folio, Lyon, 30th May 1503, in Middle French. The manuscript document is addressed to Jehan Lalemant, receiver general of finances in the Duchy of Normandy, and is a warrant to pay Thomas Bothier the sum of twenty-eight thousand, one hundred and eighty-seven livres and ten sols tournois, being the sum which he had lent the monarchy for their wars, and further instructing that Jean Roussellet also be reimbursed with the sum of twenty-six thousand livres, also being the sum he had lent for the war effort. Neatly trimmed to the lower edge, with the apparent loss of a countersignature, and with a few light, very minor stains. Lightly tipped to the upper edge of the verso to a folio page removed from an album. VGThe present document was signed during the Italian Wars of 1499-1504 which had seen King Louis XII conquer the Duchy of Milan in 1500 and the Kingdom of Naples in the following year. As King of Naples, Louis faced a new coalition gathered by Ferdinand II of Aragon and was forced to cede Naples to Spain in 1504.
