Thomas Childs - Engineer & Amateur Photographer : Manuscript 'Chinese' Journal - " Thos Child's Diary 1869, From September 9th to August 27th. 1870, Containing an account of my voyage from London to Peking." Together with : "The Diary of Thomas Child - Years Residence in China, Vol 1. 1870." Two small leather bound volumes ( Foolscap 8vo ) containing manuscript entries for both accounts. See Condition Report for further details. CONDITION REPORT: Provenance : These diaries have been handed down by family members who were originally related to Thomas Child. There is a marked difference in the quality or standard of the hand writing between the 'Voyage' volume which is rather haphazard ( it may be that the author was struggling with sea-sickness and rough seas ) and the volume about the residence in Peking which exhibits an impressive calligraphic style. The first volume provides a fascinating insight into the rigours of sea & land travel including bed bugs, fleas, mice, sea sickness, cabin bunks, primitive toilets, constipation, agreeable and unpleasant fellow travellers ( sharing accommodation ), tours of ports of call - inhabitants, customs, food ( including at one point Flying Fish for breakfast ), historic sites, jungles, deserts, postal services, money and much else. The narration relating the arrival and residence in Peking covers similar ground in relation to local inhabitants, cultural and religious practices, buildings and architecture but also refers to the demands of his official employment as a Gas Installation Engineer. One section lists detailed descriptions of photographs he is about to send home. There is also an index to this volume. One curious feature of this volume is the presence of 19 printed pages at the beginning which appear to be printed copies of his letters sent to a Temperance Society in Deptford some details of which appear in the written accounts. Clearly he was also a member of a Masonic Lodge in the UK.
