"LOOK OUT, SECRET SEVEN", Enid Blyton`s original corrected typescript, three unnumbered preliminary pages, comprising title page with Enid Blyton`s note "My original copy", a page recording that this is "the fourteenth in the well-loved Secret Seven Stories" with a manuscript note requesting "usual notes about all the books being about the same seven children and their dog Scamper", contents sheet and eighty typewritten sheets breaking off part way through the final chapter. Frequent minor corrections in Enid Blyton`s hand, Enid Blyton appears to have had one of her minor crises at the end of Chapter 11 which shows heavier revision and new typed sheets pinned together. The typescript is not bound and there is browning and marginal/corner wear throughout

[Languedoc] June 1108. *** Remarkable early twelfth-century will drawn up on the testator`s departure on pilgrimage or crusade `ad sanctum sepulchrum domini` i.e. to the Holy Sepulchre at Jerusalem made recently more accesible by the success of the First Crusade which had taken Jerusalem in 1099. A principal benficiary is the church of Saint Sauveur at Villemagne now Villemagne-l`Argentiere in the Herault departement Languedoc-Roussillon with bequests to other churches and to individuals including Bernard`s brother and sister.

St Quentin was the site of the great school of theology in Beauvais founded by Bishop Gui in the eleventh century.

Gregory X (Pope) Summons to the Abbot of Cluny to manuscript in Latin on vellum 10 lines one large and 4 small initials with pen-and-ink decoration later docket on verso some soiling stamp of both sides 205 x 255 mm. 27th April 1271. *** Pope Gregory X (1210-1276) elected in 1271 after a three year vacancy of the papacy immediately summoned the Second Council of Lyons to consider most importantly the union of the Western and Eastern Churches and the re-conquest of the Holy Land. Cluny abbey in France with its dependent houses was the most influential in Western monasticism in the 10th and 11th centuries although later eclipsed by the rise of the Cistercian and Mendicant orders.

The French dramatist Racine listed it amongst his favourite books and when his copy was taken away from him at the Jansenist retreat of Port-Royal he was rumoured to have had said that he did not care as he had memorised it.

The important memoirs of Peter Crosthwaite, a bound handwritten manuscript by Peter Crosthwaite, 56 pages. The memoirs were written "in an attempt to vindicate his character. Many scandalous and malicious reports had been propagated against him". The memoirs were an attempt to prove the worth of his character from the date of his birth until his Court Martial whilst serving with the East India Company and prior to his return to Keswick and setting up the Keswick Museum. The memoir is also sold with a letter from the Quaker Professor John Gough to Peter Crosthwaite at the museum, Keswick. The letter discusses John Dalton (the discoverer of atomic theory) and notes that he was engaged in the same pursuit, namely the observation of the Aurora Borealis and the effects thereupon of changes in the weather. The letter discusses the thermometer, quantity of rain and comparative states of the atmosphere in respect to humidity, etc. It also discusses methods of measuring the rain and moisture content of air. The letter discusses John Dalton (the discoverer of atomic theory) and notes that he was engaged in the same pursuit, namely the observation of the Aurora Borealis and the effects thereupon of changes in the weather. The letter discusses the thermometer, quantity of rain and comparative states of the atmosphere in respect to humidity, etc. It also discusses methods of measuring the rain and moisture content of air. The letter is dated Kendal 21st March 1788. PROVENANCE - the memoir of Peter Crosthwaite manuscript and the letter from John Gough to Peter Crosthwaite have both been on loan to The Wordsworth Trust, Dove Cottage, Grasmere.

Music – Irish Fiddler a fine example of an Irish Fiddler’s book of jigs reels etc with approx 98 printed tunes each with title and a further 44 tunes written in a neat manuscript hand. Ownership inscription of Martin Shean ‘bought May the 24th 1852 – a Charming Concord of sound...’ oblong approx 9x4ins calf binding spine loose some pages loose but generally in good condition considering that this was used repeatedly for perhaps many years. A fine example of a 19th fiddler’s workbook with the possibility that some of the tunes written here may be unknown.

Music – manuscript an album of manuscript music c1874 red cloth boards with gilt title ‘Spanish Song’ – with approx 13 different compositions each written out in a most attractive hand. Clearly a performer’s copy.

Lot 23B

Leeds manuscript document on approx 50pp folio paper stitched being the Survey of the Manor of Leeds 1628 written in English throughout listing tenants by name with property details rents paid etc. Also including copious notes and observations by the commissioners - whose names are listed at the head of the document and the signatures of some of them appear at the back of the document). Outer cover browned and some fraying to edges of paper not affecting text. Some show through of ink and slight dusting throughout but the document is clearly legible throughout. A fine analogue to the previous lot providing detailed information on the tenants of the Manor a generation later from the previous document. The observations of the Commissioners are also of considerable interest as they provide a vital insight into the operation of the Manor and its customs. Together with vellum bound 4to cash book late 18th c relating to the Manor.

Leeds – Manuscript estate plan 17th c of ‘The Great Hall Lee’ – ‘this plat of ground is the west end of ye close called ye Great Hall Lee as it is now devided from the other part thereof as you may se in the deeds bearing date 1652...’ written in ink to right hand of the plan with further ms note ‘This Plat of ground is called Ye Little Hall Lee and was many years since devided from Ye Great Hall Lee...’ Plan drawn in brown ink with several notations showing the Hall at the centre. The plan is made up of three original leaves of paper which have been affixed to each other making an overall dimension of approx 15x15 but one section in corner not present (and never was). Marks from adhesive tape – which we have removed to prevent further erosion leaving one close split and three small holes (easily conserved in our estimation). Ms estate plans from such an early age are now scarce on the market.

A fine and extensive early 18thc ecclesiastical manuscript compiled by a meticulous person written in a small but legible hand.

WWII – Adolf Hitler a remarkable volume of manuscript poetry written by Otto Brenner who has written extensively on the virtues of Hitler and the Third Reich. 88 pp 8vo written on rectos only blue card wrappers. The volume is divided into two chapters each marked with a drawing – the first shows a cross beaming down on a swastika and is entitled ‘Blon am Kreuz’ [Light on the Cross]. The second depicts a rotating swastika with one of its beams shining down on a broken cross entitled ‘Axt ans kreuz’ [Axe to the Cross]. The manuscript is dated August 1934. The dedication page reads : [trans] ‘His Excellency Reichschancellor Adolf Hitler the first pure German leader for a pure German Reich dedicated with thanks and on occasion of the taking charge over the Reichsupremacy...’ Together with a partial typed translation and a letter of provenance stating that this was found in one of the office rooms in Hitler’s Chancellery in Berlin in April 1947.
