ROWE, Harry (1726-99). Macbeth: A Tragedy. Written by William Shakespeare. With Notes and Emendations by Harry Rowe ... The Second Edition. York: Printed by Wilson, Spence, and Mawman, 1799. 8vo in 4s (225 x 145mm). Engraved portrait of Harry Rowe (some very light staining). [?]Original wrappers (rather worn). Provenance: partly illegible old inscription on verso of wrapper. The title page describes the editor as "Trumpet-Major to the High Sheriffs of Yorkshire; and Master of a Puppet-Show." In his Preface, the editor describes how, six months previously, he had been "as poor as the poorest felon that ever was hanged at Tyburn." He goes on: "In plain English, I am Master of a Puppet-show; and as from the nature of my employment, I am obliged to have a few stock-plays ready for presentation, whenever I am accidentally visited by a select party of Ladies and Gentlemen, I have added the Tragedy of Macbeth to my Green-room collection. The alterations that I have made in this play are warranted from a careful perusal of a very old manuscript in the possession of my prompter, one of whose ancestor`s by the mother`s side, was rush-spreader, and candle-snuffer, at the Globe play-house."

STEWART, Charles Edward (c.1750-1819). A Collection of Trifles in Verse. Sudbury: Printed by J. Burkitt, 1797. 4to (232 x 185mm). (Occasional light spotting and staining.) Modern marbled boards. Provenance: Juliana Maria Bridget Waddington, Feb. 14, 1797 (signature on front free endpaper); early manuscript poem entitled "To Mr Stewart on reading the above Verses to Mr Burke" and initialled "R.W." at foot of final text leaf and on additional inserted leaf, laid down. FIRST EDITION. Edmund Burke was amongst the subscribers. The title page describes the author as "Rector of Wakes Colne, Essex, and Chaplain to the Earl of Upper Ossory." The author takes self deprecation to an absurd degree. The Contents leaf follows the title of each poem with a column of the author`s own italicised "Friendly Criticisms"; hence, "Epistle to Mr. Burke" is "long and dull", "Trifles to Ladies and Gentlemen" is "Trash" and "A Doggrel Ode to the Revolution Society" "Answers to the title."

[WILLIAMS, William (1727-91)]. The Journal of Llewellin Penrose, A Seaman. London: Printed for John Murray, 1815. 4 volumes, small 8vo (162 x 100mm). Half titles, 6-pages of publisher`s advertisements at the end of vol. II (occasional spotting). Contemporary half calf, spines gilt (extremities rubbed, some light staining). Provenance: old illegible signature on front pastedown of vols. II and III. FIRST EDITION of what is sometimes claimed to be the first novel written in America, although it was first published in London - and then in a revised form - after the author`s death. The author was chiefly known as an American portrait painter. The book`s dedication, to the painter Benjamin West, and Advertisement, are written by John Eagles, Williams`s executor. Lord Byron was particularly fond of the work, and read the original manuscript before publication. In a letter to John Murray, he wrote "Penrose is most amusing. I never read so much of a book in one sitting in my life. He kept me up half the night, and made me dream of him the other half. It has all the air of truth, and is most entertaining and interesting in every point of view." Sabin 60801 (erroneously listed under "Penrose", and seemingly missing the work`s significance): "Contains some particulars relative to the North American Indians." (4)
