Dmitri Smirnov (1948-2020). Prayer (Our Father), and Song for Julie, two manuscript & printed scores for voice & piano, each signed & inscribed by the composer to Julie Hibbs, Keele, 16 October 1997. Prayer comprises four manuscript pages in pencil, one in ink (plus notes verso), and four printed with title. Song for Julie comprises five manuscript pages in ink, and two printed pages with title. 30 x 21cm. Housed in a recycled brown envelope (Svensk Musik) bearing address label for Dmitri Smirnov Provenance: The vendor met Dmitri Smirnov and Elena Firsova while working as part of the secretarial team in the Department of Music at Keele University in 1995. The vendor enjoyed helping Dmitri and Elena during their appointment as joint visiting professors of composition. Dmitri presented the vendor with these scores as a gift, which he had obviously spent some time over. She says she will always remember him for his kindness and generosity of spirit. Proceeds from the sale of these scores will be used to help fund repairs to the roof and organ of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Newcastle-under-Lyme

[GLASSE, Hannah. The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy, London: Printed for the Author, 1747]. FIRST EDITION. Folio (30 x 18cm). Lacking the title only, otherwise textually complete and conforming to the collation of a first edition: pp. [14] (i.e. the presence of a title would've made this 16), iii, 4-65, 68-135, 138-166, all signatures following on correctly and without any loss of text. The book begins with subscribers & contents, A1 commencing at 'To the Reader'. Without O2, as per a true first issue. Interestingly, this copy has been bound with additional blank leaves throughout, 54 sides of which have been utilised for manuscript recipes in various early hands. This, therefore, is not only a first issue of one of the most important early cookery books in English, but also a unique collection of early handwritten recipes for dishes such as 'Vermicelly Soop', 'Oyster Pye', 'Turbot in Jelly', 'Patigonian Cucumber', and 'Green Grape Wine', as well as how to pot & pickle birds including curlews, wheatears and sparrows. The laid paper of these additional leaves includes watermarks depicting both a Royal Coat of Arms and a 'GR' cypher [George II or George III]. All pages (published & otherwise) are numbered in an early hand, amounting to 336. Contents generally well-preserved with occasional creasing & marks, a few marginal tears, a few leaves with foxing, the contemporary binding worn & lacking calf, the upper board detached. A unique copy of the most renowned English cookery book of the eighteenth century

Royal Navy, Second World War. Captain Edward Desmond Bewley McCarthy's (DSO) dress uniform, likely worn during his command of HMS Ajax (22nd April 1940 – 27th November 1941). Dress uniform comprising a pair of gilt bullion epaulettes, a regulation bicorn cocked hat, two dress belts, and an earlier single cloth lace Commander's rank shoulder board, retailed by Gieves, in original fitted tin with name inscription.Sold together with McCarthy's Proclamation for crossing the Arctic Circle, dated October 3rd 1943, pre-printed document with manuscript insertions, with autograph signature of the Commanding Officer, framed and glazed, 22.5cm x 33cm (awarded during HMS Anson's involvement in Home Fleet deployment cover)Provenance: Purchased by the vendor from Charles Miller in 2010, originally together with other items such as a midshipman log completed by McCarthy's son.Admiral Sir Edward Desmond Bewley McCarthy, KCB, DSO & Bar (15 November 1893 – 8 June 1966). Service includes command of HMS Ajax from 1940 and HMS Anson from 1943, before becoming Assistant Chief of Naval Staff in 1944. Post-war, he became Commander-in-Chief of the South Atlantic Station before retiring in 1950.During his command of HMS Ajax, the vessel was involved in a single-handed engagement dubbed the Battle of Cape Passero, which centred around a British merchant convoy operation that left Alexandria for a supply operation to Malta on 8th October 1940. Although the outward journey was completed without serious incident, the Mediterranean Fleet was spotted by an Italian aircraft on the return journey and the Italian Navy made moves to intercept them in the Ionian Sea. On the night of 11th/12th October, the first Italian torpedo boat flotilla attacked H.M.S. Ajax. This attack failed, and the Ajax successfully sank two of the Italian ships, the Airone and Ariel, with a third escaping. Shortly following this battle, the Italian 11th destroyer flotilla arrived on the scene but was surprised by radar-directed gunfire from HMS Ajax. One Italian vessel was badly damaged, later being sunk, and another was lightly damaged. Captain McCarthy received a DSO for his actions in this engagement.

Royal Navy. A partially printed commission document with manuscript insertions, on vellum, appointing Lieutenant Frederick David Schaw on board HMS Hydra, dated 15th February 1801, signed by the later Admiral of the Fleet James Gambier, 1st Baron Gambier, GCB (13th October 1756 – 19th April 1833) and three others, with embossed Admiralty seal to the top left and tax stamp.Notes: Frederick David Schaw was born in March 1781 at Albury. Surrey. He entered service in November 1793 on board HMS Excellent under Captain Richard Rodney Bligh, whom he followed as a Midshipman onto HMS Alexander in 1794. This ship was attacked and captured by the French fleet when returning for escort duty, with a loss of 40 men killed and wounded. During the height of the conflict, a piece of the foremast was carried away and passed so close to Schaw that he fell senseless on the gangway. After several months of being held captive, he was later exchanged and entered service on the HMS Dryad and served in the North Sea and the coast of Ireland. Various other posts followed, and Schaw saw service in France, even though he suffered from an extreme post-measel chest disorder, which would stay with him the rest of his life. His appointment to the Hydra was under Captain Charles Paget, and it was with this ship that he attended the royal family off Weymouth and cruised with activity on the Lisbon station. When watering, about Jan. 1802, at Tetuan, preparatory to proceeding up the Mediterranean, an attack of typhus fever obliged him to an invalid home on board the Ajax. He became a retired commander on the junior list on 26th November 1830 and on the senior 26th July 1844. He is also noted for donating much of his pay to charitable causes.

Warrand & Duff Families, Ross-shire & Inverness.  A collection of manuscript letters franked from Inverness, c.1820-1830. Very detailed, some cross-written, to members of these families in India incl. Mrs. Sarah Duff's letters to her daughter. UK & Indian postmarks & some wax seals.

WHITE T. H.  The Goshawk. Text illus. Orig. red cloth in d.w., priced 10s 6d. 1st edition, Cape, 1951. With a good manuscript letter in the author`s hand, 4 leaves, written on one side each (2 full & 2 half pages, folded once), including postscript, dated October 1936 from The Cottage, Stowe Ridings, and advising, inter alia, of a "terrible calamity", his beautiful goshawk has deserted him. With discussion of the options for a replacement including a possible visit to Germany. Recipient unknown but resides at a house called "Toad Hall", to the amusement of the writer.

Etchings & Drawings.  A worn quarto album containing pasted-in etchings, also 7 drawings of Eastern antiquities (2 signed E. L. Milford, c.1830's), 2 watercolours of Lebanese/Syrian landscapes & others; also an oblong album containing 17 leaves of named manuscript music, ex Ormidale House.  (2).

HARRIS CLEMENT.  The Family Encyclopedia of Nonsense. Worn small quarto album. Part filled only (approx. 20ff). With manuscript poetry & plays & watercolour & gouache drawings of humorous caricature subjects. C.1890's; also Clement Harris, The Gilded Rope, A Society Drama in Three Acts, 145pp manuscript, 1892 & another similar, the latter again with watercolour & gouache caricature drawings. These the property of the author's sister, Muriel Harris, & given to her niece Rosemary Kemp in 1940.

Contained in limp morocco bound Oliver & Boyd's Pocket Books for the respective years. Most days with fairly detailed entries of the Captain's doings, some cash account details & other information; also another unrelated diary.  (35).

A British Georgian Brass Mounted Naval Dirk, c.1810, in Scabbard associated with the Naval Hero Sir Sidney Smith, with original paperwork. The dirk belonged to Sir Sidney's nephew, George Sidney Smith, a midshipman. It is of very unusual form, more like a stilleto, of heavy 'needle' shape, 23cm blade, designed for stabbing. Bright gilded circular brass fittings to grip, crossguard very slightly loose. Gilded brass scabbard, very finely engraved with leaves. Together with 2 manuscript letters written and signed by Sir Sidney to The Secretary to the Admiralty, J. W. Croker. First is dated 12 August 1814, regarding Sir Sidney's nephew's confirmation as a Lieutenant and mentioning a 'Mr. Locker', no doubt Capt. William Locker, Nelson's ‘Sea Daddy' as Nelson called him. The second is dated 29 August 1814, in which he also mentions his nephew. During the Georgian period recommendations like this were a common method whereby young aspiring Naval officers sought promotion through the influence of their relatives and friends. His letter of 12 August is rather indicative of his somewhat argumentative and confrontational nature. Together with 3 early Victorian love notes, good condition £460-£550 --- Provenance: Purchased by the present vendor from a descendant of the Smith family in Devon. This is an age restricted lot: the successful buyer will be required to either collect in person, or arrange specialist shipping.

A French Napoleonic Hussar Officer’s Silver Pouch and Belt c.1810. Silver top, bottom, front, and side plates, the front one having a large ‘N’ with crown above screwed to it, gilding worn, 6ins x 4ins x 1.5ins. Top one has a Paris hallmark of diamond frame with an ‘f’ above a hunting horn, large silver ring at either end, black leather body. Tarnished silver bullion cross-belt with a large silver buckle and keeper, one silver stud missing, on mid-blue cloth backing material faded to a mid-green, generally good condition £1,200-£1,600 --- Sold with a very interesting original manuscript, whose provenance dates back to 1900, at which time it was claimed that the pouch was Napoleon’s and was taken from him at Waterloo by the then owner’s grandfather, Sir Henry Simmonds. However, whilst Captain Henry Simmonds saw Peninsular service in the 31st Regiment of Foot from 1808 to 1813, he was never knighted, nor was he present at Waterloo. The documents with the pouch and belt consist of a note from the then owner sent to Christie’s listing it, together with Simmonds’ MGS with clasps Talavera, Busaco, and Albuera; a miniature of him; one of Napoleon, and stating that Henry Simmonds had commanded the St. Helena Regiment during the life of Napoleon. Christie’s reply is dated 12 December 1900, agreeing to sell the pouch and belt. However, Simmons did later serve in the St. Helena Regiment in 1842, and the Ceylon Rifles Regiment. His M.G.S. with the above three clasps was in the Tinlin Collection 1965, and was sold by Spink 1984.
