Notebook for the first 26 weeks of 18?? containing i.a. names, addresses and registration numbers of Leiden citizens, probably to administrate premiums for a health insurance fund. Manuscript in pencil and ink on paper. 97 lvs., r° and v°. In cont. sm-8° vellum bind. (Traces of use, but in good, legible condition). NOTE:A health insurance was mainly aimed at the poor and the premium therefore consisted of a few cents a week. The 'health insurance carrier' collected the premium money weekly from the insured and then paid the doctors and pharmacists. In the 19th century, the popularity of health insurance funds grew rapidly. Commercial funds, mutual workers' funds and funds set up by doctors and pharmacists arose.

The film was directed by Joseph Losey, a communist, who was blacklisted by the Hollywood studios and moved to work in the UK, he was credited on screen under the pseudonym Alec C. Snowden. The screenplay was written by fellow communist, Howard Koch, who had also been blacklisted in the US. and wrote under the name of Peter Howard. The film, originally titled With All My Heart was released in the US. as Finger of Guilt. Snowden, both letters very closely written in neat, blue ink manuscript, with McLaren Ross 39 Kensington Gardens Square, London address top right, the first letter, 1pp., 28 lines, a single leaf dated 13.6. 57, McLaren Ross updates the producer of various changes he has made to the revised script and advises him that any redundant dialogue the producer finds, he should leave these out, he adds Guy Madison by the way is making a new western, so we may not get him after all, (possibly the western film, Bullwhip (1958) directed by Harmon Jones); the second letter, 1pp., 36 lines, a single leaf dated 13.8.57, the agitated scriptwriter vents his frustrations over the additional workload, time and expenses he has incurred whilst working on the revised script. Arabic printing in Malta.- Shidyaq (Ahmad Faris al) [Historical Sections from the Old Testament with Various Meditations], vignette title, ink manuscript notes to pastedown, some light spotting and staining at beginning and end, otherwise generally clean, hinges weak, contemporary cloth, faded with some staining, joints split, small loss to spine, 8vo, Malta, [Arabic Press of the Church Missionary Society], 1833.⁂ A rare early publication of the Arabic Press in Malta, which operated between 1825 and 1842. Shidyaq, a Maronite lexicographer, journalist and a poet, worked as a translator and editor at the press from the early 1830s.

At the end of this poem is a prospectus for an engraving made from a painting by Armstrong 'in commemoration of the Jubilee, Oct. 25, 1809.'. A note to say that the print will be published on the 25th October, 1811 has been crossed though, and amended with the manuscript note 'as soon as possible' in Armstrong's hand.

Automaton drawings.- A drawing of a cupid shooting his arrow and 'manuscript' poem by an Automaton, light surface dirt, each 165 x 130mm., c.1800s.⁂ An Automaton, known as the "Draughtsman-Writer" was built by Henri Maillardet, a Swiss mechanician of the 18th century who worked in London producing clocks and other mechanisms. It is believed that Maillardet built the Automaton around 1800 and it has the largest "memory" of any such machine ever constructed-four drawings and three poems (two in French and one in English).Automata, such as Maillardet's Automaton, demonstrated mankind's efforts to imitate life by mechanical means-and are fascinating examples of the intersection of art and science.
First World War.- Nursing.- Album of watercolours, 13 leaves of nurses and patients of hospitals during the First World War, in pen and watercolour, on one side of Whatman's drawing paper, each with manuscript captions and the artist's monogram, original boards, lightly rubbed, spine defective, leather pen holder (rubbed), small oblong 8vo, 1917.
Seaweed.- An Album of Jersey Algae, or Dried Specimens of Marine Plants, with c.135 specimens of mainly British seaweed and other marine plants, mounted on recto only on 84ff., mostly one or two per page, mounted manuscript and printed captions,poem laid down to front endpaper verso, occasional creasing or minor soiling, contemporary half calf, upper joint cracked but firm, some wear to extremities, large 8vo, [c.1860].
