Vallisnieri, (Antonio, 1661-1730) . Lettre critique par monsr. Antonio Vallisnieri (or Vallisneri) was an Italian medical scientist, physician and naturalist. He was one of the first medical researchers to abandon the Aristotelian theories based on scientific principles and knowledge acquired through experience and reasoning. He therefore found himself at the centre of heated controversy, many of his contemporaries being unable to abandon prevailing medieval theories in spite of experimental evidence. The Andry-Vallisnieri dispute concerned biological generation. Letters critical of Vallisnieri would have been circulating in manuscripts such as this at the time.

Of Slavery and West Africa Squadron Interest. An unidentified ship's log book detailing Anti-slavery patrols from Sunday 16th November 1845 to Monday March 22nd 1847:, containing several accounts of chasing, firing upon and boarding slavery Brigantines, also an account of men receiving lashes for 'grievances' as well as daily ship duties, the unknown vessel patrolling the Atlantic West Coast of Africa around Bengula (Angloa), also notes on help from other West Africa Squadron nations in pursuit of slave ships and of deaths on board, manuscript pages with some water staining and later newspaper article remains stuck to pages, black leather three quarter binding with marbled boards.*Notes- Britain abolished slavery with the Slave Trade Act of 1807 and the following year, the Royal Navy established the West Africa Station in order to suppress the Atlantic slave trade. After the Napoleonic Wars, the Congress of Vienna committed other European nations to abolish slavery and undertake patrols on the Atlantic coast. The West Africa Squadron was considered the most dangerous in the Royal Navy due to the high number of deaths due to Tropical disease, though it was extremely useful for Royal navy surgeons who learnt a great deal about such diseases.

I therefore took the liberty to send the enclosed.....to give it to the officers when ever...'Later inscription to verso 'An original letter of Sir John Moore written in Egypt. in a gilt frame, 23 x 16.8cm.*Notes- Lieutenant-General Sir John More (1761-1801) is best known for his military training and his death at the Battle of Corunna during the Peninsular wars. During the French campaign in Egypt and Syria he took part in both the Battle of Abukir and the Battle of Alexandria.* Biography- Captain William Young (1761-1847) was a Royal Navy Officer who rose through the ranks during the American War of Independence. In 1800 he was appointed by Lord Keith to serve aboard HMS Foudroyant. As Captain of the Fleet he was responsible for the vessels assembled at Port Mahon for the Egyptian Expeditionary Force but due to repeated illness returned to England in 1801.
