Mathematics.- Galilei (Galileo) Mathematical Discourses concerning Two New Sciences relating to Mechanicks and Local Motion, in Four Dialogues, translated by Thomas Weston, second edition in English, title in red and black, engraved plate of tables, woodcut illustrations and diagrams, advertisement leaf at end, with early ink manuscript equations and diagrams to title and some other marginalia and underlining, title lightly soiled and stained, some other water-staining, S1 torn and repaired, modern panelled sprinkled calf, red morocco label, preserved in modern cloth drop-back box, 4to, for J. Hooke, 1730. ⁂ The first modern textbook of physics and the foundation of the modern science of mechanics. The two new sciences mentioned in the title are the engineering science of strength of materials and the mathematical science of kinematics. The first English translation was by Thomas Salusbury, published in 1665, but many copies were destroyed the following year during the Great Fire of London.

'Father of British forensic medicine'.- Archive of material relating to Alfred Swaine Taylor and his family, including Penard (Dr. Louis) Des Frais Judiciaires en ce qui concerne les Médecins légistes, with an A.L.s. from the author to Taylor loosely inserted, foxing, original printed wrappers, foxing, Versailles, 1873; and c. 30 drawings, including a few of the Elgin Marbles, some annotated by Taylor; a manuscript on the Italian language, with accompanying dialogues by Taylor, a folio account book of the Cancellor family (Taylor's in-laws), contemporary vellum, 1802-32; and 4 diaries/commonplace books by his daughter Edith Caroline Taylor, v.s., [c. 1802-71] (c. 70 pieces).⁂ Taylor (1806-80) was an English toxicologist, medical writer, and early experimenter in photography (developing the use of hyposulphate of lime as a fixing agent). His publications and appearances as an expert witness in several high profile murder cases earned him the title the 'father of British forensic medicine' (Louis Rosenfeld).

Poetry.- Battle of Trafalgar.- [Poetry], manuscript, c. 40pp., in The Universal Cash-Book and Newcastle Pocket Diary, for...1780, 2 parts in 1, unrecorded edition, defective, H2 hole within text, stained, lightly browned, contemporary limp sheep, covers detached, worn, 8vo, [c.1805].⁂ Poems include "Written after the glorious battle of Trafalgar in which 22 sail of the line were taken and destroyed" (unpublished) and "Bonaparte's Coronatione. An Imperial Ode", along with other references to Nelson and Trafalgar.

Slavery.- American commonplace book, manuscript, 89pp., some staining, lightly browned, contemporary sheep-backed marbled boards, spine ends and corners worn, joints starting, but holding firm, lightly stained, rubbed, small 4to, [?District of Columbia], [c. 1850].⁂ With a section devoted to the slavery question in the District of Columbia, and the conflicts between North and South. This section is headed 'Mr. Stanton's Lecture Feb. 22d.', i.e. the American abolitionist and social reformer Henry Brewster Stanton. Included is a 2pp. transcript of a speech to the Legislature of Vermont regarding slavery, which begins 'You are clothed with power for the most important purposes'. Vermont was the first colony to abolish slavery (2nd July, 1777), whereas it was not so in the District of Columbia until 16th April, 1862.

Ballantyne (son of R.M. Ballantyne) March 1927 H.N. Bonar", early 20th century buckram, red morocco label on spine, edges uncut, 8vo, "RMB July...", 1869. ⁂ Ballantyne's "principal achievement was his corpus of tales of manly boys in exotic locations, tales which opened to young readers the imperial prospect of a wide world to explore and exploit. Following the lead of Marryat and other previous writers, Ballantyne adapted the Robinson Crusoe model for Victorian boys and influenced subsequent Scottish writers such as R. L. Stevenson, who admired as a boy Ballantyne's works and their author, 'an exceedingly good-looking, dark, full-bearded man' (Stevenson, 226) he later acknowledged in the verses prefacing Treasure Island (1883)." - Oxford DNB.

Urbigerus (Baro) Aphorismi Urbigerani, or Certain Rules, Clearly Demonstrating the Three Infallible ways of Preparing the Grand Elixir or Circulatum Majus of the Philosophers, first English edition, engraved frontispiece, extensive notes to front and rear endpapers, and some to text margins in neat contemporary hand with cabalistic symbols, front endpapers and other rear f. detached, lower corner to first few ff. of endpapers with some loss, slightly affecting manuscript notes, some damp-staining to corners, contemporary sheep, rather worn, [Duveen 593; Wing A3528], 8vo, for Henry Faithhorne, 1690.⁂ Baro, Baru or Baron Urbigerus was a seventeenth-century writer on natural philosophy and alchemy. This is Urbigerus' foundational work on the Grand Elixir, the Circulatum majus, and all things adept on the Great Work of alchemy. It is a collection of 100 aphorisms which claims to set out completely the theory of the alchemical work and the preparation of the Philosopher's Stone.

Vladivostok, Russian-American Grill, 2 Rubles, 1919, blue print, denomination in red, in English one side and Russia on the other, a manuscript signature in red, a presentable very fine, interesting and very scarce £200-£260 --- This note was issued for use at an American Grill in Vladivostok, catering to the American Expeditionary Force, a contingency of 8,000 American armed forces dispatched to Siberia 1918-19 to aid the White armies fighting the Soviets during the Russian Revolution. American and British troops landed at Vladivostok where they were garrisoned for over a year, largely abandoned by the Wilson administration and eventually withdrew after it became apparent that the Red Army was going to assume control over Russia.
