A RARE MEIJI PERIOD BOOK OF JAPANESE CLAN SYMBOLS Printed in black and white, the front with title in Japanese and with indistinct ink translation. A manuscript of patterns 'mon' clan symbols by Murakami Masatake published in Meiji 18 - around 1885. The cover states this is a complete volume. The top row from R - L shows designs of flowers/leafy vines; the lower three rows from R - L show how the drawing of the flower is transfigured, modified into clan crests. With additional books also. Provenance: From the collection of Charles Holme (1848-1923), writer, critic and founder of The Studio magazine, and thence by descent. Mr Holme acquired the book during a trip to Japan in the 1880s. Condition: No obvious condition issues

India and the British Raj - Letters from William Ewing to His Dear Brother Malcolm Hart Orr-Ewing From India 1874-1878, a finely bound one-sided family correspondence, 94pp of ink manuscript letters, each linen-laid and collated in pencil by a later hand, all the letters are addressed from Calcutta, via Brindisi, where William seems to have been involved in trade & industry (iron?), and detail the life among the burgeoning British middle-class in India in the first-second decade of the Raj, including accounts of domestic native life (picked-out with vernacular nouns and their English equivalents), typical game and other shoots, anecdotes about fellow British people on the scene, as well as curiosity and concerns for the Ewings back home in Scotland, etc., collected then bound in the latter 19th/early 20th century by Ramage, London, stamped, in brown morocco gilt, slightly bevelled boards with a graduating double-fillet gilt enclosing a singular-fillet in blind, the upper cover lettered in gilt, six-compartment spine of raised bands, gilt-fillet and blind-rolled turn-in, marbled endpapers, the recto pastedown with a gilt tooled and lettered title label, 4to, [1]

Victorian Humour in a Graphic Didactic Primer - an illustrated manuscript, comprising two works, each with a separate title-page, Passions of Ye Period, [&], A Few Clippings from Mavors,/ [with] Spelling Book, pp: [i] (watercolour frontispiece), [10], [1] (blank), [1] (allegorical watercolour colophon of a jester observing the passage of time with a pocket watch); [38] (interspersed with a few blanks, not collated), [1] (macabre colophon of a hanged cat), the relaxed instructive text is brilliantly illustrated with well-executed monochrome pen-and-ink drawings and cartoons, the artist-author must have had a sense of humour, as he relishes farce, the ridiculous, and pricking the stuffy pomposity of Victorian social mores, with parallels of the extremes of virtue and vice in 'Ye Passions,' set and illustrated in the Anglo-Saxon manner with 'illuminations' of lust, gratuitous violence, gluttony, and-so-on, the second part is well-illustrated by the same hand, but with more contemporary themes, fashions, and-so-forth, and also includes some novel and comic storyboards, unfortunately there are no inscriptions or dates as to identify this talented hand and its wicked humour, 19th century limp olive morocco , 16mo (16cm x 10cm), [1]

The Pope appealed to Napoleon III, whose troops successfully attacked Rome in June 1849 and reinstated the Pope in the Vatican.

W.)] Catalogue of the Cricket Library of Sir Julien Cahn, Bart., at Stanford Hall, Nottinghamshire, typescript with pencil manuscript insertions, contemporary cloth, gilt, lightly sunned spine, 4to, 1942.⁂ An ?unpublished catalogue of Sir Julien Cahn's library, most of which is now at Lord's cricket ground. Sir Julien Cahn (1882-1944) was a British businessman, philanthropist and cricket fan. He was president of both Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire County Cricket Clubs, and was the Captain of his own team, the Sir Julien Cahn XI, who toured the world between 1929 and 1939. They became one of the most successful private cricket teams, so much so that several of their matches were awarded first-class status..Stephen Chalke wrote of him, "No English first-class cricketer of the 20th century can have had less ability than Cahn. He was a hypochondriac, often preferring his electric wheelchair to walking ... "

Pathology.- Platter (Felix) Observationum, in hominis affectibus plerisque, corpori & animo, functionum laesione, dolore, aliave molestia & vitio incommodantibus, libri tres, first edition, light mould-staining to pastedowns, contemporary vellum with yapped edges, manuscript lettering to spine, overall a fine and clean copy, [Norman 1716; Heirs of Hippocrates 373; G&M 3789], 8vo, Basel, Ludwig König for Conrad Waldkirch, 1614.⁂ A fine copy of this rare first edition medical work by one of the foremost pathologists of the sixteen and early seventeenth centuries. Containing "the first known case report of the death from hypertrophy of the thymus (in an infant) and an account of a meningioma" (Norman). Platter is credited with performing the first public dissection of a human body in a Germanic country and is said to have dissected over 300 bodies during his career. He was widely respected as a teacher and is considered courageous for remaining in Basel to treat the sick on five occasions when the plague struck the city.
