Garshin, M. Yu. ОПЫТЬ УКАЗАТЕЛЯ ЛИТЕРАТУРЫ ПО НУМИЗМАТИКѢ. Russian Numismatic Society photocopy reprint of the original handwritten three-volume manuscript. Oblong 4to, original printed card covers. Vol. I: 108 unnumbered pages, being the title page and 207 pages of Part I of the original manuscript covering authors from A to Lerkh (Nos. 1 to 843). Vol. II: 153 unnumbered pages, being 87 pages of Part I of the original [authors Lerkh (844) to Oreshnikov (1151) together with a few additional notes] and 161 pages of what is presumably Part II (although there is no title page) covering authors from Oreshnikov (1152) to Trutovskii (1607). Part III: 163 unnumbered pages, being 97 pages of Part II of the original (authors Trutovskii to unknown, Nos. 1608 to 1885) and 208 pages of Part III [136 pages containing a supplement of authors from A.A.S. (1886) to Iakovlev (2237) and 72 pages containing lists, tables and indices]. Fine. A remarkable unpublished numismatic bibliography, still of the greatest importance, especially for the years between Gromachevskii (1904) and 1917. The original manuscript was produced by Garshin c. 1935–40. According to a 1958-dated handwritten note on the title page (reproduced in this copy), Vladimir Richter acquired the original manuscript from L.K. Davidova, who was caring for Garshin at the time of his death. Richter donated the volumes to the Hermitage library at the request of I.G. Spasskii. Leon Hermes was at some point allowed to copy the manuscript. His copy was sold with the rest of his library by George F. Kolbe in 1997. This RNS reproduction was probably made the following year. A Russian newspaper clipping on the first page of the manuscript translates as follows: “Mich. Yu. Garshin, honorary member of the Russian Society of Collectors in Paris, former member of the Russian Numismatic Society in St. Petersburg, and contributor to ‘Staraya Moneta,’ has completed the manuscript of his up to date numismatic bibliography. Listed are about 3,000 numismatic titles and some 700 authors—all that has been written about coins in the Russian language. Subjects include: early Russian coins, independent principalities and grand duchies, Czarist and Imperial, Revolutionary and USSR, the ancient world and Byzantine, oriental, coin-like badges, Polish coins, Western European, Jewish, biographies and obituaries of numismatists, coin hoards and finds, various writings on numismatic subjects, manuscripts, bibliographies, critiques, reviews. This book, of exceptional interest to every numismatist, should be published. October 20, 1935. V.M.” Our consignor notes that Garshin apparently copied some entries from Gromachevskii, as some errors found there are repeated. Not in Volkov. Grand Duke Georgii Mikhailovich on Peter I

Akerman, J.Y. A DESCRIPTIVE CATALOGUE OF RARE AND UNEDITED ROMAN COINS FROM THE EARLIEST PERIOD OF THE ROMAN COINAGE, TO THE EXTINCTION OF THE EMPIRE UNDER CONSTANTINUS PALEOLOGOS. London: Effingham Wilson, 1834. Two volumes. 8vo [24 by 16.5 cm], matching 19th-century full brown polished calf; spines with five raised bands, rules in gilt; black morocco spine labels, gilt; board edges decorated in gilt; all page edges gilt. (2), xxi, (1), 506; (2), 512 pages; titles printed in red and black; 22 finely engraved plates of coins. Neatly annotated throughout in ink (see comments); inscribed to Captain William Henry Smyth by the author on a preliminary blank; gift inscription by Smyth’s widow to Rev. C. Lowndes below. A bit rubbed, but sound and attractive. Near fine. An extraordinary set of one of this prolific author’s most ambitious and popular works. Akerman, usually considered the father of the Royal Numismatic Society, was the most important figure in the early history of British numismatics. William Henry Smyth, to whom Akerman presented this set, was the author (in the same year) of Descriptive Catalogue of Roman Imperial Large-Brass Medals; he would go on to publish in 1856 an important work on the Duke of Northumberland’s collection. Akerman’s inscription reads, “To Captain Wm. Henry Smyth R.N. &c. &c. &c. with the best respects of his obliged servant J.Y. Akerman.” Captain Smythe (1788–1865), joined the navy at an early age and saw service in European, Indian, Chinese and Australian waters. He purchased coins widely, from dealers in Turkey, Greece, Italy and Africa, and also at auctions and through private contacts. This copy has been carefully annotated by Smyth with prices gleaned from Mionnet and from a list of 19 different auction sales (beginning with the Fairfax sale of 1751) given in manuscript at the beginning of the first volume. After Smyth’s death, this set was presented by his widow to Rev. C. Lowndes in 1865, “in memory of the esteem entertained for him by her lamented husband.” A wonderful association copy of this classic work. One of a small number printed with titles in red and black. Leitzmann 2.
[Hersh]. Hersh, Charles. INVENTORY OF THE CHARLES HERSH COLLECTION OF ROMAN REPUBLICAN COINS AND MACEDONIAN FRACTIONALS. Photocopy of Hersh’s 304-page manuscript inventory of his voluminous collection. Single-sided copies, housed in green clamshell box. Generally fine. A detailed record of this important collection, formed over six decades. Hersh’s massive colection of around 7000 coins (5000 of them Roman Republican) was donated to the British Museum in 2002. As the collection has not been formally published, this record, even in photocopy, is quite significant.

NAPOLEON I: (1769-1821) Emperor of France 1804- 14, 1815. D.S., Np, at the foot, as Emperor of the French and King of Italy, one page, folio, Imperial Palace of the Tuileries, 14th February 1809, in French. The manuscript document is a decree (numbered 326) presented to the Grand Chancellor of the Order of the Iron Crown, and names nineteen officers and men who are to be Knights of the Order of the Iron Crown. The list of individuals includes Captains and other officers drawn from the 1st Regiment of Italian Light Infantry, the 4th Regiment of Italian Infantry of the Line, the Royal Italian Chasseurs, the Napoleon Regiment of Dragoons and the Italian Regiment of Sappers. An attractively penned, clean and crisp document. VG Napoleon founded the Order in 1805, three weeks after being crowned King of Italy, using the Iron Crown, as Charlemagne had been. Said to contain a nail of the True Cross, it was made for Agilulf's Queen Theodelinda, the first royal Lombard to be Christian, and who died in 628. The present document lists a considerable part of the Order, the number of ordinary Knights, half the total, being limited to 50. The French Order ceased to exist in 1815, but an Austrian order (which lasted till 1918) was founded to mark their recovery of Lombardy.
Two hardbound manuscript notebooks. The smaller containing some 82, densely filled on both sides, handwritten pages. The cover decorated with an ink sketch of a schooner. The chief part of the smaller notebook comprises of a ship's logbook for the Schooner 'John Williams' commanded by J.N.Ridley. The John Williams was a trading vessel, handling such cargo as horn, wool, ostrich plumes and a diverse range of animal skins: lions, llama, goat, swans, pole cats etc. The logbook describes the vessel's journey in stages of a round trip that takes them firstly from Lisbon to 'Buones Ayres' travelling from November 1842 and arriving in Buenos Aires on January 27th 1843. The log then recommences on April 9th as they make passage for Paranaguá. Then to the mouth of the Rio Negro off the coast of Patagonia, thence to the Rio Plate (Uraguay) Leaving South America in October and making the passage back to England via Pernambuco and the Azores. Last dated entry of the shipping log is January 28th 1844. Each log entry gives position and very detailed descriptions of wind, weather and currents. There are some accompanying illustrations, primarily maps and harbour entrances. The log also contains trading accounts, prayers, poetry, medicinal recipes for: "TONICS, ASTRINGENTS, PURGATIONS, CORDIALS, AQUAS, TINCTURES" and their useful applications. Also use of leeches and treatment for the Bite of an Adder. The second, larger notebook containing approximately 200 handwritten pages, densely filled on both sides. Belonging again to J.N.Ridley, the notebook contains prayers but is principally a letterbook in which records of his work in shipping and as a shipping agent in 1855 are kept. There are also tracts of writing on many nautical related subjects - treating dysentery and diarrhea, shipping safety and losses at sea, providing assistance to fisherman. He writes to Charles Dickens and Lord Palmerston, even offering advice on the Crimean War.

Accompanying the manuscripts are two letters to Miss Janet Dunlop Smith on Aviemore headed paper and dated June 19th 1914 and Nov 23rd 1914; a three verse sonnet written and initialled by Henschel, dated November 22nd 1914 and companion postcard; a programme for a concert titled 'Dr George Henschel's concert in aid of the funds of the Alvie Boy Scouts Association', dated September 4th 1913, signed by Henschel, five other singers and initialled by Miss Dunlop Smith. The first letter talks of a previous sonnet that Henschel had sent and details that he shall be travelling to town (London) where he will conduct a concert at The Queens Hall and hopes that they can meet for tea. The second refers to Miss Dunlop Smith as his "grateful public" in regard to his prior verses, as well as general news and what has occupied his time in Scotland. The third is a sonnet, accompanied by a postcard sent on the afternoon that the former was mailed, upon which he writes a new final verse stating "I think the following distribution of the last six lines is better" Georgina Henschel is the composers daughter by his second wife Amy Louis. Miss Dunlop Smith was a singer under the professional name Janet Christopher. It is presumed that her close friendship with Henschel developed through their professional careers sometime in 1913 or prior.

The Sententiae - Sentences of Peter Lombard was the standard theological reference work of its time. And Sentences were the considered judgments and opinions of experts on questions of faith and dogma, which Lombard had collected and classified in four parts – the fourth dealing with the sacraments. The individual topics - in each part were called and numbered as so many distinctions. This work was Aquinas` thesis for his master`s degree in theology, a discussion and evaluation of earlier opinions. FitzPatrick, Sir J Percy South African Memories. Prepared for the press from the manuscript of the author by G H Wilson 240 x 165 x 45 [With binding error: see below.] In his Foreword, G H Wilson, who had been charged during FitzPatrick`s last illness with organising his `Scraps of History` (as he called them), writes that the book `. covers a very wide field of action, throwing much new light on the chequered history of the Transvaal in the period immediately before the South African War and thus supplementing Sir Percy`s brilliant volume, `The Transvaal from Within` [see Lot 15], which, in 1899, had so profound an effect on British public opinion in relation to South African affairs. Political questions, however, have, for the most part, been excluded from the present volume, which is mainly episodal in character.` The unattributed biographical introduction may also have been by Wilson. While the longest chapters are on the Battle of Colenso and Jock of the Bushveld, General de la Rey is the subject of two chapters, totalling 48 pp, while Rhodes features in three chapters.> Blue cloth-boards, gilt to the spine; top edge blue; plain endpapers; 320 pp of text and index + frontispiece of FitzPatrick and three other plates (Rhodes and Beit; President Kruger addressing a meeting at Krugersdorp - a rare 1896 photograph taken by FitzPatrick; and De la Rey in 1909 - this plate has been bound upside down). The covers are clean and the spine unfaded; without the blistering on all three cover faces, the condition would be better than Good; there is a binding crack at the back and the back cover has loosened. There is a small Grocott and Sherry label on the front paste-down, but the book is unmarked. The front and bottom page edges have medium foxing, as have the first twenty or so leaves. This is, nevertheless, a collectable copy - additionally, perhaps, for the binding error. Good London Cassell 1932 Reserve: $35 Click here to view further details and to bid
Kraus, Hans Peter The Cradle of Printing Part 2 [H P Kraus Catalogue 131; 1971] 355 x 250 The founder of the famous New York antiquarian bookseller H P Kraus was born in Austria in 1907. He died in 1988, but the firm he founded closed only recently, after publishing 204 catalogues. One of the most famous of these was Kraus`s own Catalogue 131, which lists 41 fifteenth century printed books from 25 presses in today`s Germany, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, England and the Netherlands - some of the books unique and others sought-after examples of a few surviving copies. The oldest item in the catalogue was `the largest paper copy of the Gutenberg Bible` (c 1455) - the emphasis being on `paper` as vellum copies were usually larger. In chronological order, other books were Ptolemy’s first atlas (1462), Caxton’s Reynard the Fox (1481), Dante’s La Commedia (1481), The Book of Hawking (1486; `the first English sporting book`), Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales (1491), and Boccaccio`s Decameron (1492). Each item is illustrated and described over four pages. One or more colour plates illustrate a dozen of the books, while there are also 86 halftones and line-cuts. In a `personal postscript`, H P K, as he was known in the world`s antiquarian book trade, wrote: `Never before in this 20th century has so formidable an assemblage of great printed books been displayed and offered for sale in a catalogue; perhaps it never can be done again.` The binding is in blue silk, with a title label on the upper panel and the title gilt-embossed on the spine. The viii + 171 pp of illustrated and plates are printed on art paper. This copy is unmarked and includes the additional pasted-in plate showing one of the manuscript catchwords in the lower margin of the [Shuckburgh] Gutenberg Bible and missing in smaller (i e shorter) copies This copy is in exceptionally good condition.
