MacDonagh, from Cloughjordan, Co. Tipperary, was a published poet and critic, a UCD graduate and assistant, and formerly a teacher at Pearse's St. Enda's school. He joined the Irish Volunteers on their formation, and quickly became a most enthusiastic soldier. He joined the IRB in 1915, and became a member of the military council which planned the Rising. He signed the Proclamation, and took his place as Volunteer commander in Jacob's factory in Bishop Street, leaving behind his young wife and their two small children. He was executed on 3 May 1916.Michael O'Rahilly, a successful businessman, was a founder and Treasurer of the Volunteers, and the main organiser of the Howth gun-running. He thought the Rising was premature, but took part anyway, reportedly saying 'I have helped to wind the clock, I may as well hear it strike.' He died in action, leading a sortie from the GPO on the Friday of Easter week.Original documents linking the prime movers in the 1916 Rising are now very scarce. (1)

Seeing the Sights of Paris in 1822Farrell (James) [of Moynalty, Co. Meath]. A manuscript journal of approx. 16pp., recounting a journey by himself and his brother (?) Thomas Farrell, from Dublin via Holyhead and London to Paris and back, from 20 May to 19 June 1822.The writer gives details of their route, accommodation, meals and entertainments. They see all the main sights, including the Invalids (no tomb of Napoleon there yet), the Louvre ("statues well worth seeing but rather naked"), the botanical Gardens ("there were several matters unfit for women to see"), and many others. They see the King and visit some Irish acquaintances. There are useful pieces of advice and interesting observations ("I found the people in Paris perfectly hones... The women in France are not in general so handsome as those in England, a few excepted, but they are less subject to vice"). On the return journey, they find that "Brighton is a beautiful town and does honour to its inhabitants, no beggars, perfectly clean."A fascinating document; the handwriting is not easy to read, but the effort is well worth while. Extraordinary copy of the Tabulae of the Olivetan Ippolito Salò (Salodius), bound with leaves written in manuscript by Angelo Maria Colomboni, likewise an Olivetan monk, and author of a treatise on gnomonics - the Prattica gnomonica - which would be published in 1669. The comparison between the handwriting in these leaves and an autograph manuscript held by the Biblioteca Arcivescovile in Gubbio (ms XXIV-18) has allowed us to attribute the leaves bound in this volume to Colomboni. The manuscript consists in leaves bearing a printed schema, which Colomboni has entirely filled in his own hand with astronomical calculations, possibly referring to the year 1650. In these tables Colomboni had developed and corrected the calculations published by Salò in his Tabulae gnomonicae, revealing his accurate reading of the work. In the Prattica gnomonica of 1669 Colomboni openly declares his debt to Salò's Tabulae: A feature which increases the importance of the newly discovered volume, which gives a unique sight into Colomboni's scientific method.Riccardi, II, 412; Michel & Michel, VII, p. 71; Piantanida, 1681, Houzeau-Lancaster, 11418.Sold with a valid export license.
Blaeu. Nova Virginiae Tabula. [Amsterdam, Ex officina Guiljelmi Blaeu, 1630 ca.]Mappa incisa su rame, parzialmente acquerellata a mano (mm 376x482). Engraved map, partially hand-colored, (mm 376x482). Latin text on verso.Fine old color example of Bleau's map of Virginia and the Chesapeake region, based upon Captain John Smith's map of Virginia. John Smith spent three years exploring the Chesapeake Bay and the surrounding area. This map presents the geographic information attained through his explorations as well as Native American accounts used to delineate territories further upriver. The extent of Captain Smith's firsthand knowledge of the area reaches the Maltese crosses. Everything beyond is based on Native American reports. Upon Smith's return to England in 1609, Smith employed William Hole to engrave a map, which was first included in a small pamphlet by Joseph Barnes of Oxford in 1612. Jodocus Hondius engraved the first edition of this map in 1618, making it the second appearance of Smith's original manuscript to appear in print. Smith's original map would not appear again until 1624, when it was included, along with Smith's map of New England, in his landmark work, "The Generall Historie of Virginia, New-England, and the Summer Isles" in 1624. The following year it was included in "Purchas His Pilgrimes". Upon Hondius's death in 1629, Blaeu purchased the plates and the imprint was thereafter changed to reflect the new ownership. Blaeu used the map first in his "Atlantic Appendix" (1630) and afterwards in virtually every edition of his atlas. The map is beautifully ornamented with the Royal Arms of Britain (colonial rulers of Virginia), a standing figure of an Indian, and an inset vignette of "King Powhatan," the father of Pocahantas, sitting in state in his lodge. Powhatan was the powerful ruler of about thirty Algonquian tribes in the region, the strongest single group of Indians on the Atlantic coast. He is said to have had forty bodyguards and 100 wives. His rulership consisted of his providing military leadership and protection in exchange for tribute from the individual tribes.

Three volumes, folio (355x230 mm). I. [4], 893, [55]; II: [6], 862, [62]; III: [12], 560, [24] pages. Engraved title-pages, numerous woodcuts in text (many are full-page). Woodcut decorated initials and headpieces. Foxing in places, light browning. Uniformly bound, contemporary vellum over pasteboards. Spines with five raised bands, inked titles. Edges speckled in red and brown. The spine of the first volume rebacked, the one of the second volume with a few wears, some wormholes to covers and spines. Ownership stamp on the title-page and first flyleaf od each volume, 'Biblioth. S. Caroli ad Quat Font', and manuscript inscription 'Conventus S. caroli ad 4 fontes de Urbe' on the title-pages and some leaves of the second and third volume, both to be referred to the Church of Saint Charles at the Four Fountains in Rome. Rare edition of this celebrated work by the Bolognese physician and naturalist Aldrovandi, who had collected a well-known private natural history museum. The Ornithologia is devoted to birds, and also includes descriptions of mythical monsters like the Harpies. The monumental treatise first appeared in Bologna between 1599 and 1603, supplemented with a magnificent series of illustrations mostly drawn by Giovanni de' Neri - also known Giovanni de' Uccelli - and cut by various artists. The Ornithologia represents the first part of Aldrovandi's thirteen-volume encyclopedia on natural history, of which only four were published in his lifetime. The volumes contain detailed descriptions, and some chapters are exclusively devoted to New World birds, for example the pavo Indicus or peacock of the Indies. Aldrovandi also describes the opera plumaria, which Montezuma offerred to Cortés: features which reveal his reading of narratives of the Conquista, first the De rebus Oceanis et Novo Orbe by Pietro Martire d'Anghiera (see lot 281). In this late Bolognese edition the engraved title-page of each volume bears the mention of the bookseller Marco Antonio Bernia, who was the financial baker of the publication, while Nicolò Tebaldini and Giovanni Battista Ferroni were responsible - as the colophon attest - for printing.
