SCHILLER FRIEDRICH: (1759-1805) German Poet, Philosopher and Playwright. An extremely rare fragment of an autograph manuscript, unsigned, two pages, slim oblong 12mo, n.p., n.d. (1804-05), in German. The text, apparently unpublished and with several corrections, is from Schiller's translation of Phedre and states, `O wird mir solcher Dank für meine Liebe? Verdammliches Verwegenes Erkühnen Freche That! Verdammliches Erkühnen! Und seiner frevelhaften wilden Lust zu büßen genug zu thun, Erlaubte sich der Freche gar Gewalt!´ further writing, to the verso, `Think of my Queen's complaints - O Lord! From a wicked love - all her hate arisen - Theseus´. Some light overall age wear and with very slightly irregularly trimmed edges, about G In the winter of 1804-05 Schiller was suffering from pain and spasms of pneumonia and the only literary work he could undertake was a translation of Jean Racine's dramatic tragedy Phedre, which had first been performed in 1677. The present fragment was one of a number excised from the original manuscript shorty after Schiller's death and presented to admirers as a keepsake of the poet.

FLAUBERT GUSTAVE: (1821-1880) French novelist. A significant autograph manuscript, unsigned, three pages, folio, n.p., n.d. (c.1857), in French. Flaubert's extensive manuscript notes are entitled Un repas de noces - Lettre d'Hyppolochus a Lincée('A wedding meal - Letter from Hyppolochus to Lincée') and were prepared by the novelist as research notes for chapter one ('The Feast') of his historical novel Salammbo. The text states, in part, (translated) 'Caranus making a nuptial feast in Macedonia invited twenty parasites there. As soon as they were seated at table each of them was given a bottle of silver. They had each received before entering the room a gold band estimated at five gold Ecus….. For us happy for the rest of our days, with what we took from the feast of Caranus, we seek goods, country houses, slaves to buy, with the presents with which he has showered us'. Rare in this form. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG Hippolochus was a Macedonian writer and student of Theophrastus, who addressed in a letter to his fellow student Lynceus of Samos a description of a wedding feast in Macedon in the early 3rd century BC. The bridegroom was a certain Caranus, most likely a relative of the Caranus who had been a companion of Alexander the Great. Flaubert's Salammbo is a historical novel which was published in 1862. Enormously popular in its day, the novel opens with a feast to celebrate the victory of the battle of Eryx, won against Rome, and was praised for its style and story. Provenance: It is believed that the present manuscript was originally included with a series of other research notes made by Flaubert, totaling some 26 pages, and entitled Letters of Alciphron. As well as including extracts relating to a wedding feast, the manuscript also featured observations relating to courtesans and the manners of the people of Greece (see Les Amis de Flaubert, bulletin 12, 1958).
CLAUDE OF FRANCE: (1499-1524) Queen of France 1515-24, wife of King Francis I. A fine, rare L.S., Claude, one page, 4to, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, 13th March n.y., to 'Monsieur le premier president', in Middle French. The Queen writes in favour of the Bishop of Nantes who 'a long temps u ung proces, pendent en la court, touchant son abbaye de la grenetiere, Et luy est requis avoir une audience dune appellation verballe, qui Retarde le principal dud. proces, laquelle je vous prie tant quil mest possible luy donner en faveur et amour de moy, vous recomendant son bon droit en justice, donne le mien propre' (Translation: 'a long time has a lawsuit, pending in the court, touching his abbey of Grenetiere, and he is required to have a hearing of a verbal appellation, which delays the principal of the said lawsuit, which I pray you as long as it is possible for me to give him in favour and love of me, recommending to you his good right in justice, given mine own'). Countersigned at the foot by Gilles de Comeacre and with a manuscript address panel and contemporary dockets to the verso. Autographs of Claude of France are rare as a result of her untimely death, possibly in childbirth or following a miscarriage, at the young age of 24. A few very small, minor holes to the left edge, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG Francois Hamon (d.1532) Bishop of Nantes from 1511 until his death.
WAIN LOUIS: (1860-1939) English artist, remembered for his drawings featuring anthropomorphized large-eyed cats and kittens. A good pair of A.Ls.S., Louis Wain, four pages (total), 8vo, Bendigo, Westgate on Sea, 26th August and 1st September 1907, each to [Peter] Keary. In the first letter Wain asks his correspondent not to forget about an article for his annual and continues 'By the bye I am sending tonight to Mr. Everett an article on Canada which may interest you as you have I think been that way. The facts were given by a Canadian farmer whose an old friend of mine & worse than I have painted them. The official facts are very bad too'. With blank integral leaf. In the second letter Wain thanks his correspondent for their manuscript, remarking 'it is quite unconventional & out of the ruck if you don't mind me saying so, & just what I strive for for my annual', and further writing 'I am writing a bit of imaginative fancy myself for the annual & I hope to make the whole thing quite out of the way. I touch politics in a very satirical manner too in some drawings. But it is only the upper classes who are satirical in our days, the mass of the people take umbrage at anything which hits them'. Rare. VG, 2 Peter Keary (1865-1915) British editor of TitBits from 1884-90, when, in conjunction with C. Arthur Pearson, he started Pearson's Weekly. The Louis Wain Annual was published between 1901 and 1915.
LISZT FRANZ: (1811-1886) Austrian-Hungarian composer. Rare Autograph Musical Manuscript Signed, F. Liszt, one page, oblong 8vo manuscript paper, n.p., n.d. (probably post 1850). Liszt has boldly and neatly penned three different musical quotations with elaborate annotations, identifying them individually as from three different sections, each with a different system number, measure number and page number. In an autograph note the composer requests that the markings of 'f.p., >, ', -, and Pedal' be shown in the Polonaise manuscript. Some very light age toning, and minor traces of former mounting to the verso, otherwise VGLiszt states that the corrections pertain to a Polonaise manuscript, although the passages he pens do not appear in the published scores of either of his famous Polonaises. However, one of the musical passages is similar to the first transition in Chopin's Op.53 Polonaise (just before the principal theme rises an octave) and it is well known that Liszt ventured into Chopin's genres only after the latter had died, in 1849, although whether this was out of respect or rivalry remains unclear.

Countersigned at the foot by William Strickland (c.1686-1735) English politician who served as Secretary at War 1730-35. With blank integral leaf. Some light foxing and age wear and a few stains and minor splits at the edges of the folds (some professionally repaired). About VG

HORROCKS BRIAN: (1895-1985) British Lieutenant-General of World War II, commander of the XXX Corps in Operation Market Garden. An original typed manuscript, unsigned, with extensive holograph additions and corrections by Horrocks, nine pages, folio, n.p., n.d. (late 1960s?), entitled Churchill and the Second World War - An Appreciation by Lieutenant-General Sir Brian Horrocks, stating, in part, 'Winston Churchill was the greatest statesman-cum-soldier of this century. At the age of sixty-five, he was summoned by the British people as a whole to be their Prime Minister and to lead them through some of the darkest hours this country has ever known. Three days after taking office, when he made his famous 'blood, toil, tears and sweat' speech to the House of Commons, he went on to say, “You ask, 'what is our policy?' It is to wage war by sea, land, and air, with all our might, and with all the strength that God can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny. You ask, 'what is our aim?' I can answer in one word - Victory; Victory at all costs, Victory in spite of all terror, Victory, however long and hard the road may be.”…..His moral courage in those early days has never been equalled before or since……Looking back on that period, it is almost unbelievable that any one man could have stood up to such a strain as the nation's war leader, yet Churchill never flinched. It was during this dark period I first met him…..I can see him now, a sturdily built figure, wearing an odd sort of uniform which he had designed for himself. There was a gleam in his eye, a cigar in his mouth, and a stick in his hand…..His mere presence was magic….In 1942 I was flown out from Britain to take over 13 Corps, with General Montgomery commanding the Eighth Army….After approximately a week I was visited by Winston Churchill….It was obvious from the start that the old warrior statesman did not think much of the new commander of 13 Corps…..I heard afterwards that, on the way back to Cairo, he turned to General Montgomery and said, “He's no good. Get rid of him.” Monty replied. “Look here, Sir, you stick to your sphere, and I'll stick to mine.” That visit did an enormous amount of good to everyone except me……There developed a curious love-hate relationship between Churchill and Montgomery. The former could not afford any more defeats, and the latter refused to be stampeded into any attacks before he was ready…..From now onwards, for the remainder of the war, Churchill had to act as a member of a team, consisting of President Roosevelt, whom he now regarded as a personal friend, and Stalin, who was always difficult and menacing…..But my final memory is of a happy Churchill. It was in March 1944, during the Battle of the Reichswald……He was visibly moved as he stood, for the first time, with his feet firmly planted on the territory of the enemy he had been fighting for so long…..' Accompanied by a final, corrected typescript copy of the manuscript, attached to the draft by staples to the upper left corner. Some light age wear and minor creasing, about VG
‘the literary revolution is more strongly dissolved by us and divided by us’ PASTERNAK BORIS: (1890-1960) Russian poet and novelist, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1958. A good A.L.S., Boris Pasternak, in Cyrillic, four pages, folio, n.p., 29th June 1945, to Sergei Durylin, in Cyrillic. The first page, penned on an official printed form, is dedicated to a number of manuscript lines from Pasternak's long poem Spectorsky, with an annotation in the writer's hand at the foot noting that the lines represent new amendments to be made to the eighth chapter. Pasternak's letter, most likely his retained draft copy, then commences to the plain verso of the printed page and continues on two adjoined plain pages, writing, in part, 'If there is even a grain of truth in everything……that has been said, then it is [true] only in that it completely and undeniably coincides……with its historic infinity. How can this very carelessness be a part, and even such an insignificant whole…..which was so tragically but not narcissistically disentangled……the literary revolution is more strongly dissolved by us and divided by us…..You can taste it from my discussion……You can be calm. I am not the only one who believes in this truth in general. Believe precisely in these truths, it is precisely from this that a note of patriotism is formed, a modest confidence in one's inviolability grows. There were a lot of deceptive, indefinite things in the former troubles of the recent past. It's another matter if in this work of mine….it hurts that the area of external expression of everything exhausts it……The technical conditions did not see any internal discord, although they are present in writing…..Now, their respectful basis of poetry……is simple literature…..and especially poems passed through an inflamed soul which was not previously broken on the way……Please note that here I sometimes write most of the time with my left hand……Do not pay much attention to this and do not draw many….conclusions from this problem. I told Chagin all this. He was simply in awe. They are going to conclude a contract with me in August, so everything must be prepared by the end of the year'. A letter of interesting content written shortly after the end of the war on the Eastern Front (German-Soviet War) during World War II. A few minor, light stains and some light overall creasing, about VGSergei Durylin (1886-1954) Russian editor and literary critic, a friend of Pasternak, Tolstoy and other Russian writers.

A.N.S., with his initials PGL, to the recto and verso of his personal printed oblong 12mo Visiting Card, featuring his printed name, as Ingenieur des Arts et Manufactures, Conseiller du Commerce Exterieur de la France, at the centre, and address at 79 Avenue Marceau, Paris, at the base, n.p., n.d., in French. Latecoere writes, in full, 'Très sensible à vos amicales félicitations. J'attends toujours le devis des salons sur cour pour faire commencer les travaux' (Translation: 'Very sensitive to your friendly congratulations. LOYSON HYACINTHE: (1827-1912) also known as Père Hyacinthe. French renowned Preacher and Theologian, a brilliant orator best remembered for his eloquent sermons at Notre Dame de Paris. Father Hyacinthe was a Roman Catholic priest in favour of Church reform, reconciling Catholicism with other religions and with modern ideas. His manifesto against the alleged abuses in the Church created an internal revolt ending with his excommunication. He left Paris and went to America and later married in London. An extremely interesting manuscript in the hand of Loyson, signed `Hyacinthe Loyson´, four pages, 4to, Geneva, 1st of November 1902, in French. The manifesto is entitled `Rome and Sion´, and refers to different religions coming from a same source, and to the non-sense of the new trends of the Catholic Church. Dans la cérémonie catholique, qui rappelle à plus d´un titre le plus mauvais passé....´, ("I have just read in the newspapers the story of two very different ceremonies, but both relating to Judaism and which took place on the same day in the Victory Synagogue and in the Church of Saint Thomas of Aquinas. In the Catholic ceremony, which recalls in more ways than one the worst past....´, further saying `... pour recevoir le baptême, a renoncé solennellement à la perfidie judaïque et aux superstitions hébhraïques, c´est à dire à la religion la plus antique et, sous bien des rapports, la plus pure qui existe aujourd´hui en Europe, celle-là même dont, au dire de Saint Paul, la Chrétienté n´est qu´une branche misérable... En échange, le néophite a fait siennes toutes "les perfifidies" de la politique jésuitique et toutes "les superstitions" du semi-paganisme romain´ ("...to receive baptism, has solemnly renounced to Judaic perfidy and to Hebhraic superstitions, that is to say the most ancient and, in many respects, the purest religion that exists today in Europe, that of which, according to Saint Paul, Christianity is only a wretched branch... In exchange, the neophyte has made his own all the "treacheries" of Jesuit politics and all the "superstitions" of Roman semi-paganism") Further again Father Hyacinthe concludes making an eloquent defence of equality, peace, respect and purpose of the religion, accusing those who want to bring the Catholic Church to several centuries back, and stating in part `A quelque croyance qu´ils appartiennent, chrétiens, israélites ou simplement philosophes, ils ne se rangeront pas, s´ils sont vraiment religieux, du côté ce ceux qui ayant pour idéal les pires divisions et les pires haines, s´efforcent de nous ramener aux abjurations de l´Inquisition espagnole, dans l´impossibilité de nous ramener à ses bûchers. To whatever creed they belong, Christians, Jews or simply philosophers, they will not line up, if they are truly religious, on the side of those who, having as their ideal the worst divisions and the worst hatreds, strive to bring us back to the abjurations of the Spanish Inquisition, in the impossibility of bringing us back to its bonfire. Men of sincere and profound religion will be with those who embrace all races and all religions in the unity of the French fatherland as in that of the pacified human race. Such are, such have always been, I can say, the feelings of a Judeo-Christian preacher who, in the chair of Notre-Dame de Paris and since, has not opposed the New Testament to the Old, the Church to the Synagogue, but has always united the cult of Jesus of Nazareth to the love of the people of David and the race of Abraham...´ A manuscript of very interesting content. Small overall minor age wear with three pinholes. G to VG

° ° Manuscript Cookery Book of Lady Anne Blencowe, (3)pp. index and 34 (ex36)pp. of cookery 'receipts' (apparently in her hand); contemp. blind-panelled vellum, med.8vo., and boldy written 'A Blencowe' within flourishes in central panel of lower cover. (late 17th / early 18th cents.). Anne Blencowe (1656-1718), eldest daughter of the eminent Savillian professor at Oxford, John Wallis, had married Sir John Blencowe (politician and lawyer, of Marston St. Lawrence, Northants) in 1675. In the earlier 20th cent. another of her receipt books came to light, being published in a limited edition (1925) with an introduction by George Saintsbury. The receipts here, generally favouring fruits, puddings and cakes over fish and meat - as did, apparently, the 1694 dated volume - include bisketts, gingerbread, egg cheesecakes, damson or bulace chese, gooseberry vinegar etc.; a few are credited - Lady Probyn's custard pancakes, Mrs Steptoes orange cream, Mrs Barnardistons sago pudding ... It is tempting to suggest that this might be a precursor of the published book, though a connection with a kinswoman, Lady Elizabeth Probyn (5 credits) may point to a later date.***CONDITION REPORT***Some cover-discolouration,lacks pp. 17 & 18 (i.e. 2 receipes), some inoffensive soiling, etc., written in a bold and legible hand; 2/3 entries apparently is the hand of (?) contributors, 3 near contemp. leaves (in other hands loosely inserted), text followed by approx. 108pp.(unused).PLEASE NOTE:- Prospective buyers are strongly advised to examine personally any goods in which they are interested BEFORE the auction takes place. Tsongkhapa studied the traditions of the Nyingma, Sakya, Kagyue, and particularly Kadam lineages, and codified certain principles of all of them in the Gelug tradition. Today, the order is the most popularly followed in Tibet, with its head, the Dalai Lama, seen as the spiritual leader of the country. The Gelug tradition is also known as the “Yellow Hat Sect,” for the color of their pointed caps, and Tsongkhapa can often be identified by the hat as well as the sword and manuscript which sit in lotus blossoms at his shoulders.A Thangka Wall, in Tibetan religious architecture, is a stone-built structure used for hanging a giant or monumental thangka (such as the present lot) in some of the major Buddhist monasteries of Tibet. The pair, who arrived in Britain at the outbreak of WWII, were innovators who pushed the conventions of British fabric design in daring new directions. They brought colour and vibrancy to the bleak face of post-war textiles, and with this, hope and optimism was conveyed through their work. They experimented with bold patterns and new and unconventional fabrics, including mohair, rayon, parachute nylon and cheesecloth, influencing top couturiers such as Christian Dior, Cristobel Balenciaga and Yves Saint-Laurent, and they also collaborated with leading artists such as Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Henry Moore, Ivon Hitchens and Henri Matisse, to produce a series of iconic silk scarves. In 1987 the V&A in London mounted a retrospective exhibition of the Aschers' work, and published an accompanying book by Valerie D. Mendes and Frances M. Hinchcliffe entitled Ascher: Fabric, Art, Fashion. More recently, in 2019, an impressive publication The Mad Silkman: Zika and Lida Ascher Textiles and Fashion, by Konstantina Hlaváckova, accompanied an exhibition at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, paying a lasting tribute to the important contribution made by the Aschers to British fashion.

* Embroidered picture. Adoration of the Shepherds, Flemish, possibly 17th century, silk embroidery highlighted with gold thread on a coarse linen ground, depicting the Holy Family with oxen and shepherds, against a backdrop of classical ruins, with vegetation, and a pair of putti in the clouds above, expertly worked in long and short stitch, stem stitch, chain stitch, couching, and padded satin stitch, incorporating a single gold spangle, colours faded, 2 small areas of loss to threadwork on left-hand side with linen ground showing, small brown stain to right-hand edge, 39 x 31 cm (15.5 x 12.25 ins), glazed gilt frame with attribution plaque 'Maria Van Dyke' (46 x 38 cm), backboard with Christie's black ink stencil and early manuscript labels pertaining to provenance QTY: (1)NOTE:A skilled embroidery picture, evidently executed by a professional needlewoman, and long-held to be by renowned embroiderer Maria Cuypers (circa 1565-1607), the mother of painter Anthony Van Dyck. An eighteenth century manuscript label on the backboard states: This piece of Needle-work was purchased of a Man who brought it from Antwerp", with a quotation beneath from Walpole's Anecdotes of Painting in which he states that Van Dyke's mother was admired for 'her Needleworks in Silk'. A second manuscript label, written in the early twentieth century by T. Crome, gives further details of provenance, compiled from documentation supplied by Mr Harding of Messrs A. Savill & Son: 'This piece of needlework was purchased from a man who brought it from Antwerp, by the late George Scott Esqre F.S.A. of Woolston Hall, Essex, a celebrated connoisseur of his time, and by him attributed to the mother of Van Dyke. The label above referring to Walpole's Anecdotes of Painters is in the handwriting of the late George Scott who died about 1750. From Woolston Hall it passed through the families of Scott [Bod?] and Lady Prideaux to the late Perry Watlington Esqre of More Hall, Harlow, Essex, from whose estate it was purchased in 1902. In an inventory of the pictures in the Boudoir of Woolston Hall, bearing the date 1851 ... it appears as follows "The Nativity in needlework, by the mother of Van Dyke"'. Part of a further manuscript label on the backboard reads 'Watlington Eqr. More Hall Harlow'.Antiquary George Scott (1720-1780), was an honorary doctor of law and a great collector of antiquities and manuscripts. He was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1748. By the time he died, a widower with no children, he was a virtual recluse at Woolston Hall. George Scott's estate passed to his cousin Robert Bodle, whose son Robert inherited, leaving it to his daughter, Mary Elizabeth, who died unmarried in 1872. Mary's younger sister, Louisa, who had married George Watlington as his second wife, died without issue before her sister, so Woolston then passed to John Watlington Perry Watlington, the son of Thomas Perry by his wife Maria Jane, daughter of George Watlington by his first wife. J.W. Perry Watlington died childless and his estates passed to his sister Louisa Watlington (d.1892), who inherited both Woolston Hall and Moor Hall.Maria Cuypers was apparently an accomplished painter of flower pictures as well as a professional embroiderer. She was known to have been extremely skilled at needlework, and her embroidered pictures were highly acclaimed. Anthony Van Dyke was her seventh child, and she died whilst giving birth to her twelfth.

Art Dealers Picture Restorers and Frame Makers, The Little Gallery, Worthing, frame size 52 x 40 cmQTY: (1)NOTE:Anglo-Canadian artist Walter Joseph Phillips was born in Lincolnshire, and studied at the Municipal School of Art in both Birmingham and Great Yarmouth. In 1913 he emigrated to Winnipeg, where he found employment as a teacher. By 1917, he had begun to experiment with the colour woodcut, eventually publishing The Technique of the Colour Woodcut in 1926. The following year Phillips made his first trip to the west coast of British Columbia, visiting Alert Bay and Village Island. In his unpublished manuscript entitled Wet Paint (available at wjphillips.ca/wet-paint), the artist describes the present work: 'some of the coastal steamers tie up at the end of this crazy wharf, and discharge consignments of groceries and other articles of commerce, for the genial Chinese merchant Jim King, whose store stands at the shore end of it. The tide races along Johnstone Straight between the shore and Vancouver Island, whose snow-capped peaks may be seen in the distance. An Indian dug-out canoe is passing - admire its graceful lines. Gasoline-driven fishing boats - trollers and seiners, tramp steamers and launches pass us frequently, and the big liners that ply between the great southern ports of Alaska, at regular intervals. It has become a busy sea-way. The composition does not present any feature of outstanding interest. The canoe was introduced for balance, and to help lead the eye to the end of the wharf, which is the focal point. A distant island is connected with the wharf on the picture plane by intrusive lines and parts, and the vertical direction of the piles merges gradually into the horizontal by virtue of their spreading reflections.'
