Bruce (J.M., 1923-2002). Author's manuscript annotated index of British aeroplanes of the First World War, c. 1950's and later, a neatly handwritten and exhaustive index of all the British aeroplanes active during the First World War, with notes on use, location, squadron details, planes shot down, pilots killed, etc., all contained in five folio ruled ledgers, rubbed and some wear, spines crudely restrengthened or worn, together with Bruce's handwritten annotated index of Nieuport aircraft during World War One, and the author's typescript copy of The Sopwith Pup, both contained in modern ring binders. A highly important collection of manuscript notes by the acknowledged world authority on British Aeroplanes of the First World War period, representing over half a century of dedicated research. J.M. Bruce's classic British Aeroplanes, 1914-1918, was first published by Putnams in 1957, and was followed by other standard works on the history of First World War aeroplanes. The Sopwith Pup, by J.M. Bruce, Gordon Page and Ray Sturtivant, was published by Air-Britain in 2002, and Nieuport Aircraft of World War One was published in 1988.. (7)

West Ham United. The Thames Ironworks Shipbuilding and Engineering Company Limited share certificate, 1899, eng. certificate printed in purple ink, with some manuscript additions and signatures, approx 45 x 34.5 cms, framed. The original Thames Ironworks Football Team was formed in 1895 with the backing of Arnold F.Hills, the Chairman and Managing Director. It pioneered playing under electric lighting. set up on poles, in matches against Arsenal and West Bromwich Albion in 1896. In the 1898/99 season the Club turned professional and changed its name to West Ham United in 1900. Its ground, the Memorial Ground, Canning Town, was built by Hills for the staff and was in use between 1897 and 1904. (1)

Williams (Alfred, 1877-1930, Wiltshire author). A series of twenty-five autograph letters signed, mostly Dryden Cottage/'Ranikhet', South Marston, [Wiltshire], 2nd March 1910 to 6th October 1925, all to his friend, mentor and biographer, J.B. Jones, from soon after their first meeting for a fifteen-year period, concerning his working life (as hammer-man at the Great Western Railway works in Swindon, Gunner, market gardener and writer), the ups and downs of his literary life and scholarly interests, plus mentions of the Wiltshire countryside, rural life, friends, family and finances [which were always bleak], etc., totalling approx. 40 pages on an assortment of different papers, together with related ephemera, including a real photo postcard of himself as a Gunner, (with a presention inscription to Jones), a page of Sanskrit notes [Williams taught himself, Greek, Latin and Sanskrit], two original poem translations signed, 'Admonitions of Hiero (Pindar)' and 'Simonides of Ceos (Danae)', [both appeared in "Songs in Wiltshire", 1909], a sheaf of approx. twenty-five of Williams's (unpublished?) typescript poems, with a letter from Leonard Clark to J.B. Jones thanking him for their loan but considering them too slight to be worth preserving in a more permanent form, plus other letters from Clark to Jones concerning publishing projects, etc., a small quantity of printed and manuscript material relating to the preservation of Coate Water [home of Richard Jefferies], a typescript copy concerning the Jefferies-Williams Memorial Scheme, newscuttings, postcards and snapshots relating to Alfred Williams and his Wiltshire homes, plus ten books incl. J.B. Jones's own annotated presentation copies of the Williams biographies by Leonard Clark and Henry Byett. Some of the letters with this lot are quoted in Leonard Clark's biography, "Alfred Williams, His Life and Work", (Bristol, 1945); see pp. 39, 49, 50, 76, 99 & 160. (-)

Important and scarce medieval manuscript vellum manorial roll for the Manor of Lydgate [Lidgate] for the court leet held on Tuesday next after the feast of Corpus Christi [sixty days after Easter] in the 2nd year of Henry IV [1401], the document records the names of tithing (jury), amercements for non?payment of debts and non?attendance to answer plea, amercements, mainly for unlawfully turning their animals on the Lord's land and chopping down trees, Precept - Admissions and surrenders, further amercements for various offences, election of officers, the reverse of the document records various orders default of suit of court, defection of villeins, sale of a cottage without a licence, inquiry into ownership of land, etc.. A remarkable document detailing and recording the operation of the feudal system. With a translation of the main areas covered in the document and an inventory which identifies place names referred to and their present locations in and around Newmarket. (1)

A magnificent manuscript vellum Exemplification document, dated 10th October 1586, from Ralph Bowes and his wife Joan, to William Bowes, Knight, William Bayte, and Thomas Bayte for the Manors of Nunthorpe, Stainton and Thorneton, with twenty-four messuages, twenty cottages, three dovecotes, thirty tofts, thirty gardens, thirty orchards, one thousand acres of land, five hundred acres of meadow, one thousand acres of pasture, forty acres of wood, one thousand acres more land, together with rents and common pasture in Nunthorpe, Stainton, Thorneton, Ryall Hill, Newbye, Middleton, Battersby, Ingleby and Yarm, written in a fine dark Chancery script and with a complete Great Chancery Seal of Elizabeth I, showing the Queen seated on throne with Orb and sceptre, with translation.
