Italian School, 16th CenturyThe Martyrdom of Saint Lawrence gouache and gold on vellum14.1 x 10.1cm (5 9/16 x 4in).unframedFootnotes:The present unusual gouache would most probably have originally comprised a page from a Book of Hours and sylistically dates from between 1540-1560. The palette, the handling of the flesh, the little putti and the depiction of faces in the small figures are all comparable to the distinctive technique of the Croatian miniaturist Giulio Clovio (1498-1678). Clovio has been dubbed 'Michelangelo of the Miniature': he spent the majority of his career in Rome and is regarded as the last notable artist in the tradition of the illuminated manuscript. From a stylistic point of view the figures are also reminiscent of certain Mannerist artists of the Prague School, such as Bartholomeus Spranger and Joachim Wtewael. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

By then masquerades were denounced (by such as the Bishop of London) as occasions for vice and immorality, not least due to the high numbers of women of pleasure who also attended. The first work is Heidegger's poetical reply to the Bishop of London's sermon against Masquerades; the second an anonymous poetical satire.

Newton showed that the important and dramatic aspects of nature that were subject to the universal law of gravitation could be explained, in mathematical terms, within a single physical theory." * Politico-historical playing cards. Orange Cards, or The (Glorious) Revolution of 1688, London, late 17th-early 18th century, the complete deck of 52 etched playing cards (French suits), comprising 4 suits of 13, numbered I to X or lettered knave, queen, king, each card with an illustration, possibly after Francis Barlow, depicting a scene from around the reign of James II, captioned beneath, with suit sign top left (hearts & diamonds stencilled red), value top right, and an Arabic numeral (from 1-52) top centre, dust-soiled with some stains or brown marks, occasional minor creases (mainly to corners), some close-trimmed with loss of line border (few clipping image), 3 short closed edge tears, 2 of diamonds with lower right corner excised (affecting 2 words), king of hearts with minor surface loss centrally and to upper blank margin, knave of hearts with adhesive stain to previously repaired upper left corner, small ink manuscript alteration to card 8 (VII amended to VIII), card 9 with indistinct final digit to Roman numeral (possibly a printing fault), plain versos, each card approximately 90 x 60mm, contained together in 3 ringbinder album leaves with clear pockets, each album leaf 33 x 32cmQTY: (3)NOTE:Fournier, British Isles 13; Mann, Collecting Playing Cards, p.155 (no.8); Ortiz-Patino collection 15, Willshire, English 191 (now incomplete); Whiting p.116.Rare. Although it is logical to assume these cards were produced soon after the events portrayed (hence they are often dated circa 1689) the British Museum gives them a slightly later date of circa 1700-1725. The lack of a tax stamp would indicate that they were either sold before 1711, or exported (or possibly finished between June 1711 and August 1712): see John Berry Taxation on Playing-Cards in England from 1711 to 1960 (IPCS Papers no.3, January 2001), p.23.The designs on these anti-Catholic propaganda cards, originally titled 'Orange Cards' but usually titled as above, or alternatively 'Rebellion' or 'Reign of James II', are generally attributed to Francis Barlow. However, although he did design several similar packs, there is no firm evidence to show that these are also his. The British Museum has a volume of original playing card designs by Francis Barlow, none of which are represented in this pack. Nevertheless, Willshire describes these card designs as being in general good, as is also their technical execution. The Arabic numerals enable the story to be followed in chronological order, with scenes varying from macabre, such as 'The Midwife cutting her Husband to Pieces', to satirical, for example 'A Priest selling of Relicks by Auction' in which the relics are 'Tho[mas] à Becket's Old Stockins'.There were numerous similar packs produced around this time, each emphasising various aspects of the events leading up to the reign of William of Orange. Sylvia Mann, in Collecting Playing Cards (pp.151 & following) describes several English political propaganda decks, including this one which she calls 'The Revolution'.
