Anson, George - Baron Anson - A Voyage Round the World, quarto, calf with repaired hinges and spine, replaced endpapers, 42 folding maps, plates and charts, numerous annotations in pencil and additions in a knowledgeable hand, together with later charts inserted:- Chart on tracing paper of "Rough Outline of SE Portion of Tierra del Fuego", inserted at p.76. Plate 20 neatly remounted, 1835 Chart of Anna Pink Bay by The Officers of HMS Beagle inserted at p.142, chart on tracing paper "To illustrate the position of the Wager May 14th 1741 and her wreck on the following day" inserted at p.144, "Approximate [manuscript] Mister Roll of HMS Wager", slip in at p.148, Chart on tracing paper of "Coast of Peru and Equador - Port Payton", inserted at p.188, London 1748While Great Britain was at war with Spain in 1740, Commodore George Anson led a squadron of eight ships on a mission to disrupt or capture Spain's Pacific possessions. Returning to Britain in 1744 by way of China and thus completing a circumnavigation, the voyage was notable for the capture of an Acapulco galleon but also horrific losses to disease with only 188 men of the original 1,854 surviving.

JUXON WILLIAM: (1582-1663) Archbishop of Canterbury 1660-63, previously Bishop of London 1633-49. Juxon attended King Charles I at his execution in 1649 and offered the monarch his last rites. D.S., Guil: London, as Bishop of London, one page, oblong 4to, n.p. (London), June 1636. The manuscript document is a warrant for a payment of twenty pounds to be made to Abraham Parrott in reward for services rendered to the King. Boldly signed by Juxon to the right border and countersigned by Francis Cottington (c.1579-1652, 1st Baron Cottington, English Lord Treasurer, leader of the pro-Spanish pro-Roman Catholic faction in the court of King Charles I) and Robert Pye (1585-1662, English Courtier and Politician, Auditor of the Exchequer 1620-42, 1660-62; with several additional words in his hand). Neatly laid down and with several faint pencil annotations and a very small, thin printed caption neatly mounted to the lower edge. About VG

Victoria R I, one page, slim 8vo (a folded 4to sheet, with two red wax seals intact to the verso), Admiralty, 11th September 1862. The manuscript document approves the outcome of a General Court Martial relating to Charles Du Cane Williams, a Second Lieutenant, who was tried for insubordination and disorderly conduct and sentenced to be cashiered. Signed by the Queen at the foot. With overall dust staining and minor age wear. G

The manuscript document, which is accompanied by a partial transcript, relates to the Parish of St. Mary Aldermary in the city of London. Signed by Parker at the foot. MELIES GEORGES: (1861-1939) French Film Director, a pioneer of cinema and innovator in the use of special effects. Rare D.S., G. Melies, one page, 4to, Paris, 25th October 1912, being a receipt issued on Melies' attractive printed stationery. The manuscript receipt, in French, is for the sum of 370 Francs, being the payment of royalties due from the sales, in New York, of Melies' film, which is detailed on a separate sheet, Judgement of the Sea.  Three file holes to the left edge of both documents, not affecting the text or signature. VG, 2

 RIMSKY-KORSAKOV NIKOLAI: (1844-1908) Russian Composer. A fine pair of A.M.Qs.S., N. Rimsky-Korsakov, one page, manuscript paper, small oblong 8vo, n.p., n.d. In black ink the composer has neatly penned four bars of music which he identifies as being from his opera La Nuit de Noel (‘Christmas Eve’, 1894-95) and immediately beneath penned a further quotation of six bars of music which he identifies as being from his opera Snegourotchka (‘The Snow Maiden’, 1880-81). Signed by Rimsky-Korsakov at the base of the page and with an inscription in his hand to the upper edge. An unusual and rare pair of signed quotations. VG The Snow Maiden was Rimsky-Korsakov’s own favourite work. Provenance: The present quotations were formerly part of the inventory of the noted American autograph dealer Robert Batchelder (1927-2007) and are accompanied by his original catalogue description.

The neatly penned manuscript document being a Warrant authorising that, 'You forthwith cause the Great Seal of Great Britain to be affixed to an instrument bearing date with these presents… containing a commission constituting and appointing our trusty and well beloved Anthony St. John Baker Esquire, to be Secretary of His Majesty's Legation to His Majesty's Good Friends the United States of America…' Further incorporating a copy, in Latin, of the commission document itself. Countersigned to the centre by Richard Colley (1760-1842), 1st Marquess Wellesley, British Politician, Governor-General of India 1798-1805. With a blind embossed seal at the head. Neatly bound with brown ribbon. VG

The manuscript document, penned in a large, bold hand, states, in part, ‘Our Will and Pleasure is that the establishment of Our Guards Garrisons and Land Forces in Great Britain…do Commence and take place…a[nd] that no new charge be added thereunto without being first Communicated to Our High Treasurer or Commissioners of Our Treasury…’ Countersigned at the foot by George Oxenden (1694-1775) English Politician, William Clayton (1671-1752) 1st Baron Sundon, British Politician and William Yonge (c.1693-1755) English Politician. Neatly trimmed to the right edge, very slightly affecting a few words of text but not the signatures, and with a few neat splits to the edges of the folds, G

Bold, dark ink signature ('George R') as King on a small oblong 12mo piece of vellum, evidently neatly clipped from the head of a document, with a slightly irregularly trimmed lower edge. Together with a larger irregularly trimmed portion of a vellum document, possibly that from which the signature was excised, featuring a blind embossed paper seal and several partial lines of manuscript text. G to about VG, 2

GEORGE III: (1738-1820) King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland 1760-1820. D.S, George R, as King, at the head, three pages, folio, Court at Saint James's, 30th April 1802. The manuscript document grants Isabella Frances Master, widow of Richard Master, former Consul at Algiers and Governor of Tobago 'who fell a sacrifice to the unhealthiness of the climate', a yearly pension of £200 and further grants Sir Abraham Hume a yearly pension of £100 in trust for the children of Master. Countersigned by Henry Addington (1757-1844, Viscount Sidmouth, British Prime Minister 1801-4) and several others. Extensive splitting to folds of third page and some minor splitting to other folds. G  Sir Abraham Hume (1749-1838) Politician and one of the Founders of the Geological Society. Hume amassed a famous collection of minerals and precious stones and was a large purchaser of pictures by the old masters.

[CHARLES V]: (1338-1380) King of France 1364-80. An unsigned 19th century autograph manuscript, one page, 4to, n.p., n.d., in French. The manuscript page, in an unidentified hand, and most likely part of  a larger work charting the history of the Kings of France, is entitled 'Ordon: des Rois de Fr: C6. p.54'  and states, in full, 'Here we see the terms by which King Charles 5 has put in order the provision for maintenance of his second son and the dowry of his two daughters. The Prince must have lands for the value of 12 thousand francs as an income with securities and forty thousand francs in cash for his outfit and carriage. Marie, the eldest daughter will have 100 thousand francs for the dowry and a trousseau that would suit the daughter of a King of France. Isabelle, the second daughter will have 60 thousand francs and the trousseau as her sister. And for the titles that some or others could claim from the estate of the King which are dependent upon inheritance to the crown.' GEORGE IV: (1762-1830) King of the United Kingdom 1820-30. Dark ink signature ('George R', as King) on an oblong piece neatly clipped from the head of a document. One minor ink smudge only very slightly affects one letter of the signature. Together with a second ink signature ('George P R', as Prince Regent) on an oblong piece removed from the head of a document with several lines of printed and manuscript text relating to Mary Weston, widow of the late Major Richard Weston. Some very light dust staining and minor age wear, about VG, 2

ABBOT GEORGE: (1562-1633) Archbishop of Canterbury 1611-33. Large portion of a D.S., G: Cant:, as Archbishop of Canterbury, two pages, small folio (the upper third portion of the document no longer present), Whitehall, 13th November 1616. The manuscript document, featuring over ten lines of text, is a Treasury Warrant authorising a payment to William Skippon for the transport of around thirty soldiers levied in Devon from the port of Bristol to Ireland. Signed by Abbot at the foot and countersigned by a number of other leading statesman from the reigns of Queen Elizabeth I and King James I including Thomas Howard (1561-1626, 1st Earl of Suffolk, English Admiral who commanded the Golden Lion in the attack on the Spanish Armada, Lord High Treasurer 1614-18), Ludovic Stewart (1574-1624, 2nd Duke of Lennox, Scottish Nobleman, Lord High Commissioner 1607-09), William Knollys (1544-1632, 1st Earl of Banbury and Viscount Wallingford, English Nobleman, Treasurer of the Household 1601-16), John Digby (1580-1653, 1st Earl of Bristol, English Diplomat, Ambassador to Spain 1610-24), Ralph Winwood (c.1563-1617, English Diplomat and Statesman, Secretary of State 1614-17), Julius Caesar (1557/58-1636, English Lawyer, Judge & Politician, Chancellor of the Exchequer 1606-14, Master of the Rolls 1614-36), Thomas Lake (1561-1630, English Politician, Secretary of State 1616-19) and Fulke Greville (1554-1628, 1st Baron Brooke, English Poet, Dramatist & Politician, Chancellor of the Exchequer 1614-21). With a partial integral address leaf bearing the remnants of a blind embossed paper seal. Very slightly irregularly torn to three edges and with traces of guard to the left edge and with some light overall staining and age wear, only very slightly affecting a few of the signatures, most of which remain bold and legible, G Provenance: The present document was previously included in the Enys collection and is accompanied by a holograph note identifying most of the signatories and stating 'This autograph was given me by John Bullock in 1866'.

ALBERT PRINCE: (1819-1861) Prince Consort to Queen Victoria 1840-61. L.S., Albert, President, one page, folio, Adelphi, London, 5th July 1853, to Professor J. F. Royle, on the printed stationery of the Society of Arts. The manuscript letter is written on behalf of the Council of the Society of Arts and sends thanks to Royle for 'the kind and courteous manner in which you responded' to a request to deliver a lecture 'on some of the results of the Great Exhibition' and further adds 'as a slight mark of acknowledgement they request your acceptance of the accompanying Volumes (no longer present) containing the series of Lectures thus delivered'. With some very light, minor age wear, VG         John Forbes Royle (1798-1858) British Botanist, Professor of materia medica at Kings College, London from 1836-56. Royle had superintended the Indian department at the Great Exhibition in 1851.

'A Book of Verses, Original and Translated including 'Lays of the Lion and the Lily', dedicated to my sister Kate O'Connell'. 1876, a manuscript of 130 poems and verses, 8vo; together with a manuscript notebook by Thomas O'Connell-FitzSimon. Liege, 1846, with 34 playbills from operas and plays staged in Liege in the late 1840s. (2) Ellen Fitzsimon (1805-1883), eldest daughter of Daniel O'Connell, is listed in 'The Poets of Ireland' by David O'Donohue. London 1892. She published Derrynane Abbey in Eighteen Ninety-Two and Other Poems, Dublin, 1863. Over the signature 'L.N.F.' she published poems in 'The Citizen', 'The Nation' and 'Duffy's Fireside Magazine'.
