Townsend & Sons, Sheffield, their ticket to pastedown, inscribed in MS with mid-20th century and later accounts and records of tool, machine and agricultural equipment supplies, red-ruled throughout, reinforced contemporary reverse calf binding, gilt lettered spine, marbled edges and endpapers, folio (40cm x 30cm)
Royal Interest, Travel/Scandinavia and its Fjords - an early to mid-Victorian ink MS notebook, ?almost certainly the property of and kept by a Victorian courtier, a member of the Royal Household, or possibly a Royal Navy officer, partially filled and comprising, the recto: 51pp diary of a North Sea voyage from May 31 to June 28 1868, 5pp of a letter draft in pencil; the verso: 1pp Index, 1pp Books to Buy, 3pp Book from Library & 1pp Prices for Farm Work, the diary only being compiled for less than one month, but generally for every day, leads to the assumption the notebook was ostensibly purchased for the voyage alone, which is fortified by the presence of works on travel & exploration in the book indexes to verso, the journal commences at Portsmouth on May 31 1868 when our chronicler goes down - presumably from London - 'with C. Molyneux & lunched with Henry [...] [at one of his] houses [...] [later] cast net _ Dined with H.S.H. of Leinningen [Admiral Ernst Leopold, 4th Prince of Leiningen, (1830-1904), a cousin of the Royal Saxe-Coburg Gothas and commanding officer of the royal yachts HMS Magicienne and HMY Victoria and Albert until 1874] & smoked 2 cigarettes with success[!] Bed at 12 [...]'; the next day he (assumed geneder from the smoking and male company) goes 'on Shore visit with H.M. [Queen Victoria] & Law Bailie [...]'; later on June 7th, 'Church [...] at 10.30 a.m.[...] [with] P. of Wales [later Edward VII] [...]'; June 12 [...] 'English Schooner fired a Royal Salute with a musket! [...]'; the final entry, June 28 'At sea, dead calm [...]; the remaining entries with notices about the royals, breakfast, weather, fishing - generally without success, speed of travel and nautical facts, contemporary three-quarter oxblood morocco gilt over marbled boards, conforming endpapers, blue marbled edges, retailed by H. British Post Offices in Siam : (SG 20c) 1882-85 BANGKOK Double overprint 'B' 8c. Orange wmk Crown CA, Perf 14, 1882 Straits ovptd 'B' Type 1, variety overprint double, part Bangkok CDS used example, one of the rarest of the double overprints. An exceptionally difficult stamp to locate in cds condition, due to delicate colour, this being a particularly fine example, described on the BPA colour photo-certificate (2019) as bearing manuscript line at foot, creases (absolutely minimal), soiled (barely) and a little rubbed (hardly), is genuine - most of which, apart from the authenticity, is irrelevant because a better example hardly exists. Crucially, clearly defined double 'B' overprint. Exceptionally rare. Cat £4250 (image available)
Civil War.- Copy (A) of a List of all the Cavalliers, and brave Commanders of His Majesties Marching Army, with the number of Captaines, in each severall Regiment, and every Regiment containing about a thousand Soldiers, broadside, folds, title in contemporary manuscript on verso and initials "G.S." on recto, trimmed close to text but with portion on left-hand side remaining (folded), 2 short tears to left-hand edge, [Wing C6177], c.335 x 260mm., for Francis Wright, 1642.⁂ ESTC lists 6 UK copies (BL, Eton, Liverpool University, Oxford Christ Church and Bodleian, Society of Antiquaries) and only one copy in America (Yale).
Scotland.- Proclamation (A) anent Elders of Kirk Sessions, 1684, broadside, woodcut royal arms at head, signed "Will Paterson, Cls.Sti. Concilij." at foot, note in contemporary manuscript ?in Scots to verso, a little spotted and soiled, creased, central horizontal fold, [Wing S1630; Not in British Library], c.370 x 300mm., Edinburgh, by the Heir of Andrew Anderson, Printer to His most Sacred Majesty, 1684.⁂ Concerning administration of external government of the church.Not in the British Library; ESTC lists a copy in the National Archives of Scotland, 4 copies in the National Library of Scotland, and 3 in America (California State Library and 2 at Harvard).

A Stranger in Distress.- Wilkinson (Thomas, lawyer and schoolmaster) A Paraphrase on Hor: Lib: 3. Ode 16, ?autograph manuscript, title, introduction and 4pp., foxed, browned and creased, title and last f. margins repaired with tape, unbound, sm. 4to, [c. 1750].⁂ A rare survival and possibly a unique work. The author in his introduction to the Rev. Mr Attwood gives a brief autobiography of his misfortunes. "Bred to the law" and practising as an attorney in London, Wilkinson was sued on behalf of a near relation and had to retire to Cornwall and work as a teacher, leaving his wife in London. In search of another more lucrative job and rejoined by his wife, Wilkinson returned to London and addressed this variation based on Horace to Attwood in the hope of some charity, naming himself as "A Stranger in Distress".

Kent, Denton.- Charter, I, Thomas Creppe tiler grants to Thomas Sedenore of Challokke and Richard Sedenore of Dover his brother all his lands and tenements in the town of Denton, Berham and Westlinghame, manuscript in Latin, on vellum, 10 lines, remains of wax seal (cracked), later docket on verso, folds, slightly browned, 85 x 210mm., Denton, 22nd January 1403.
Kent.- Release by William Langley of Knowlton and his brother Edmund Langley to Gilbert Hegge of Tykenherst [Tickenhurst] of arable land in Pittedane in the tenure of Northbourne between the land of Master Richard Tykenherst in the West and the land of Walter Carpenter, jun. in the East, manuscript in Latin, on vellum, 11 lines, in a handsome charter hand, large remains of two red wax seals, folds, slightly creased, 107 x 255mm., Tickenhurst, 7th April 1405.⁂ Northbourne near Deal in Kent.

PRISCILLA GURNEY "Memoir of Priscilla Gurney" a handwritten manuscript in two volumes including subjects such as "Sketch of the Earlham Family", "Illness and death of their father", "Priscilla unites herself more closely to friends and becomes a minister", "Priscilla's account of the death of Henry Gurney", "Extracts from her letters to Maria Fox", "Marriage of her brother Joseph", etc. circa 1815-21 together with another volume of part-handwritten manuscript entitled "Stepping Stones to Heaven Oct 24th 1878" leather bound CONDITION REPORTS Unable to establish whether written personally by Priscilla Gurney or copied from her memoirs at a later date. Both are handwritten and in the same handwriting. The handwtiting in the third book is very similar but not as neat as the other two. No corrections to the written text.
