Anglo-Saxon Bronze Chip-Carved Disc Casket Appliqué8th century AD. A thin (0.7mm) slightly domed disc with chamfered lip to the outer edge, pierced at the centre and close to the periphery, decorated with dense ornament comprising a border, cross and quadrants; the border with running meander pattern extending onto the rim; the cross with two arms in loose bilinear interlace and two with dense, regular interlace, all within narrow borders; the centre with an incised D-shaped panel on each internal edge; two quadrants with a La Tène Style triskele of discs among scrolled tendrils, remaining two quadrants with opposed Insular Style animals with extended lappets forming a frame of interlace, ring-and-dot to the shoulder and hip. Cf. Youngs, S. (ed.) The Work of Angels. Masterpieces of Celtic Metalwork, 6th-9th Centuries AD, London, 1989; Webster, L. & Backhouse, J. The Making of England. Anglo-Saxon Art and Culture AD 600-900, London, 1991. The thin metal and shallow curvature suggest that the appliqué formed part of the decorative scheme of a substantial item, such as a casket, shrine or processional cross, to which it was attached by a central stud, possibly into a prepared collared socket. The surface behind must have been curved or some form of soft padding used to support the appliqué. The cross bears two contrasting styles of interlace - a dense mono-linear type seen on some cross-shafts in the English Midlands and known as the `Mercian Style`, and a bilinear variant familiar from sumptuous manuscript art such as the Lindisfarne Gospels. The outer meander is a geometric form found in some 5th-6th century Merovingian contexts and elsewhere. The opposed beasts within an interlace panel in a quadrant occurs on e.g. the linked three-pin set from the River Witham (Webster & Backhouse, item 184). Parallels to the combination of Mercian Style interlace and triskeles may be found on e.g. the decorative mounts from Perthshire (Youngs, item 117); the combination of opposed beasts and interlace appears on the disc from Bolnhurst (Webster & Backhouse, item 185). 20 grams, 82mm (3 1/4"). Ex Northern English collection; found Northumberland, UK, 1990s. Very fine condition; about one quarter absent.

Vallentin (Captain, later Major, J.M.) MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF THE ANGLO-BOER WAR Hand written in a Letts Colonial Office Diary for 1898, 245 x 200 mm, bound in dark blue cloth with a red and gold emblem on the upper cover, marbled endpapers and edges. The diary contains one page per day for the year and a number of other pages for notes and an index. Vallentins entries are written in pencil on one side only and cover about a third of the pages. He has written the diary using carbon paper. The entries for July 2nd to 25th August appear in carbon copy only and the stubs of the original pages remain where they have been cut out. From 26th August to 1st November both the original and carbon copies remain. Captain John Maxwell Vallentin (later Brevet-Major), of the Somerset Light Infantry (Prince Alberts) saw extensive action in the Anglo-Boer War, his medal clasps include Cape Colony, Elandslaagte, Defence of Ladysmith, Orange Free State, Johannesburg and Diamond Hill. He followed this with vigorous service in the guerrilla phase of the war. After recuperating (after enteric) he came to Heidelberg where Ian Hamilton had him appointed as the District Commissioner. A sedentary life did not suit Vallentin, so in October, 1900, he was employed by the S.A. Constabulary. The following month was promoted to Brevet Major .Early in 1901 Major Vallentin raised a corps of volunteers to operate in the Heidelberg area. This unit, which never exceeded 200 men was to become known as Vallentins Heidelberg Volunteers or the The Nigel Mine Guards. The Boers derisively called then Witkoppe (white heads) after the white hatbands which they wore. He was killed in action on 4th January 1902 at Bankop. Vallentin was forced to make a last stand on a small ridge, which was virtually bereft of cover. The Boers under Kmdt Opperman pressed their attach with great vigour, under the impression that they were avenging Bethal. Again and again they threw themselves at the small force on the hill and were thrown back. Two burghers fell within ten metres of the defenders. Vallentin strived to the last to avert defeat and rally his forces, but when the Boers worked their way to his reach and began firing at 50M range he knew they stood no chance. Vallentin stood exposed to the enemy fire issuing instructions when he was shot down. From Uys (Ian) Heidelbergers of the Boer War (1981). In this diary he describes his time with the S.A. Police in Heidelberg including his brief detention by a Boer commando (1st September) which he had approached believing it was led by de Wet but found Theron instead, So I went out 3 pm, came on Boer outpost, 6 pm, found not de Wet but Theron at home; had long talk with him; he was rude and held me prisoner. He was detained until Saturday, 8th September. These dates are left blank in the diary as if he was intending to fill them in later. On Sunday he writes, In afternoon received a wire from Lord Roberts saying no details of my capture, detention or release had been received and that orders as to the future would be issued when a Court of Enquiry had reported on my case. The next day he comments, Monday, 10 September. Court of Enquiry sat at 9 am; opinion reported by wire to C of S Belfast. Apparently no action was taken against him and he continues the diary describing has administrative duties including veld clearance and farm burning, issuing passes to compliant burghers and commenting on commando and troop movements. Of this incident Ian Uys comments, On one occasion Vallentin was deputed to deliver Lord Roberts proclamation to Boers in the Heidelberg area. He delivered his message and spent a week with a Boer Commando as their guest while the proclamation was debated. This unique experience must have given him deep insight into the Boer character and military establishment, for he was a trained observer. (page154).
Hobhouse, Emily (translator) Tant` Alie of Transvaal. Her diary 1880-1902. Translated from the Taal (1923) 185 x 135 This book, one of Emily Hobhouse`s last and rarest, has not previously been listed on these auctions. It contains one of her most eloquent prefaces, with tributes to Lloyd George, Tant` Alie Badenhorst, who died in 1907, and Olive Schreiner, who described the manuscript as ` . . . a revelation of human nature; I think it is wonderful` and promised to write the preface, but who also died before the book was published. The forewords are by Tant` Alie`s son and grandson. `Translated` may give the wrong impression. Badenhorst`s diary was not transcribed from its original state - `not easy to decipher` and when the translation was completed `the European War was almost upon us` and the book `had to be laid aside`. Hobhouse was helped by many, including Deneys Reitz, `with words no dictionary registers`. The author describes the writer of the diary, whom she met in 1902, as having a `fragrance of holiness`. Hobhouse knew all the people and many of the places in the diary, so could vouch for its accuracy. She had decided to translate and publish the diary because Tant` Alie ` . . . much wished [that it] should be published for [her and other] children`s children, desirous that future generations should know and avoid the cruelty of war`. The green cloth-boards, gilt lettered to the spine and blind ruled to the front, are moderately rubbed. The binding is tight The front endpapers have a bookseller sticker on the paste-down and Pieter Erasmus`s attractive ex-libris label on the front free leaf, while on the back paste-down is a small library rubber stamp. The contents - 320 pp of prelims, text and epilogue - are unmarked and undiscoloured, making this a collectable copy. Very Good London George Allen & Unwin 1923
[Gordon-Thompson (Grace)] "" ANGLO-BOER WAR. A MANUSCRIPT ACCOUNT FROM THE HOME FRONT. Small 4to (200 x 140 mm) Thought to be the account written by Grace Gordon-Thompson of Sandgate, Kent from31st January to 5th February 1901 with a concluding entry May 31st 1902 the day peace was declared. By way of introduction she write, ‘A diary written under ordinary circumstances is for the most part, monotonous reading, but the idea occurred to me than a war diary written by an English girl in England during the dark and anxious days of the South African War, might be interesting reading in the far future ..but mine will be only a little simple record from day to day, just as news from the front his flashed home.’ 179 pages, mostly written one side of the page only, with occasional maps and newspaper cuttings pasted in opposite, in a lined note book with a black cloth back and marble paper-covered sides. It starts with a summary of the main dates from 12th October to January 15th 1900 and then daily entries from 31st January mostly from Sandgate but occasionally she mentions spending time in London. Her main source of news are the newspapers and the Post Office telegrams a subscription service by which important war news was circulated and the entries convey the anxiety of the public in England awaiting news and eventually the elation of receiving better news from the front. She mentions troops arriving back in Sandgate which was a garrison town. ‘The soldiers came in at about 4.30. We had such fun and cheered them right well. Poor fellows, some of them looked so ill and all terribly bronzed. LIEUTENANT W B ST LEGER, MC, COLDSTRAM GUARDS WAR DIARY, SEPTEMBER 1916-MARCH 1918 typescript, 496p including Foreword by Captain F Butler-Thwing (see Provenance) green cloth spine gilt, c1920 An unpublished Great War diary of unusual literary merit and detail. Provenance: Captain Walter Clarkson Mumford (1886-1959) of the Irish Guards from who acquired (in 1933) by Captain Francis Wendell Butler-Thwing (1891-1964) of the Coldstream Guards. The diarist, Lt William Brett St Leger was killed in action during the Battle of the Lys in April 1918. His achievement as a diarist is the more remarkable since he was aged only 23 when he died. St Leger joined the army as a volunteer at Cape Town whilst still at College. His perceptive writings from this period include interesting observations on the Boer as a fighting man. Commissioned into 2nd Bn. Coldstream Guards, his vivid descriptive powers are shown in his eye witness descriptions of the Battles of the Somme, Passchendale and Cambrai. Such is the detail that space does not permit a synopsis, but his great bravery, as well as his philosophy and Christian faith are all striking features. On a lighter note, when he was decorated at Buckingham Palace, ""What battalion are you"" asked the King [George V] ""Second Sir"" he replied. ""Second"" said the King, ""Very pleased to give a Military Cross."" So ended his brief meeting with the famously taciturn monarch. St Leger added `I did not hear him speak to anyone`. The manuscript is in the IWM, London and the present volume, an early transcription of the second half of the Diary was intended for the Guards Club, since 1975 the Cavalry and Guards Club.
