Eichmann prepares his defence of the Lidice Massacre EICHMANN ADOLF: (1906-1962) Nazi SS-Obersturmbannfuhrer, known as the 'architect of the Holocaust.' An extremely rare, lengthy and significant Autograph Manuscript Signed, with his initial E, four pages, folio, n.p. (Jerusalem), n.d. (c. June 1961), in German. The manuscript represents Eichmann's instructions, in seven numbered sections, to his Defence Attorney, Robert Servatius, ahead of the day's proceedings at the Jerusalem District Court during Eichmann's trial and state, in part, '1.) ….concerning the documents of the 24.6.61, pages 12 to 25, a) Factual inaccuracies b) Important things aren't mentioned at all, [in fact] important documents are ignored c) Namely the Lidice-issue is inside, but my compilation "special treatment" was not given to me by Dr. Wechtenbruch, because he believed "Lidice" didn't come in today yet. 2.) To save what can still be saved a) Please don't ask me about what I said about document 912 (testimony Sievers)…..it complicates the whole matter and resolves nothing…..Therefore today I am compelled to answer mostly by my own way. 3.) Please do not discuss the document 396….because it is hung in limbo without coherence; while the documents 1254 + 1255 ("According to the order RFSS the Jews are hanged") are recorded as dropped. Why that???? It should be brought!!! 4.) Namely the "Lidice" instance is on turn, but instead and for nothing else I would need my special elaboration about the special treatment; Poles….Jews. Today I gave the file to Dr. Wechtenbruch, so he can incorporate it, but unfortunately it wasn't done; I shall get it back tomorrow. I couldn't have guessed, that "Lidice" wasn't [scheduled] for today because Dr. W. [withheld] my special treatment note, nevertheless for today no "program" remains and "Lidice" is scheduled for tomorrow…….6.) After these "preparations" I have the biggest concerns, because we didn't discuss this matter yet. Therefore I beg you, to ask me as few as possible…..I wish to skip "Lidice" (doc. 557 to 914) to skip "Ganzenmuller" (doc. 1253 + 1537) to skip "Execution" (doc. 1254 to 396) the only solution would be to schedule it for tomorrow. Because then the matter would be cohesive and [could be] discussed and submitted in more detail…..therefore to avoid giving the impression as if I want to hide something, when nothing is to hide. 7.) Doc. 1531….does not respond to that, what the indictment accused me in this regard. Namely if SS Leaders Burger and Linka (?) are my subordinates, as the indictment claims…..' Signed by Eichmann at the conclusion of the third page. The fourth page bears a further brief note (later crossed through) concerning documents numbered 1129 to 1140 which are in brown folder number 2. An exceptional document relating to one of history's most important war crimes trials which resulted in Israel's only judicial execution to date. Accompanied by a complete English translation. VG   Robert Servatius (1894-1983) German Lawyer known for his defence of Nazi war criminals including Adolf Eichmann. Servatius was assisted at Eichmann's trial by the legal assistant Dieter Wechtenbruch. The Lidice Massacre took place in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia (now the Czech Republic) in June 1942 and saw the whole village destroyed on the orders of Adolf Hitler and Heinrich Himmler. The massacre was an act of reprisal for the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich and the genocide totalled 340 deaths including 82 children who were later exterminated after having been transferred to the Chelmno concentration camp on the orders of Adolf Eichmann. During his trial Eichmann faced four counts of crimes against humanity against non-Jews, including his participation in the Lidice Massacre. He was found guilty for deportation of part of the population of Lidice, but not for the massacre itself.

[TYPESCRIPT.] - Trevor HALL. Marianne Foyster of Borley Rectory. A Biographical, Psychological, and Psychical Investigation. [N.p.:] Leeds, 1958. Vol. V. One of 3 copies only, large 8vo (250 x 183mm.) Mounted photograph of Marianne Foyster verso the initial blank, long hand-written authorial note signed and dated by the author on the initial blank, title-page with hand-written annotation, 11pp. duplicate type 'Introductory Note' recto only, 122pp. duplicate type main text recto only, 5pp. 'Index' recto only. (Mild toning.) Contemporary brown morocco, gilt borders with corner-pieces and lettering to upper cover, gilt turn-ins. Note: includes a loosely inserted typed a.l.s. where Trevor Hall says that this volume 'gives the last word, in my opinion, on the Borley mystery but which for obvious reasons can never be published'. It's understandable. Hall has written an astonishing, if possibly fevered, account of the life of Marianne Foyster which makes the supernatural hauntings of Borley Rectory pale in comparison. It's worth remembering, as Marianne herself does in these recorded interviews, that her incumbency of the rectory is only one part of the Borley story. It was known as the most haunted house in England before being demolished in 1944. But this manuscript conveys a sense that the incumbent may have been haunted, as much as the house. - And a related volume, the book that Trevor Hall felt able to publish ('The Haunting of Borley Rectory' by Eric J. Dingwall, Kathleen M. Goldney and Trevor Hall, 1956, 8vo). Provenance: T. Morely (named recipient of the a.l.s.); by descent, from the estate of Barry Murray (2).Buyer’s Premium 24.5% (including VAT @ 0%) of the hammer price. April). - Die Litanei u. a. mit Desiderius, Gregor, Robert, Urban und Maria von Ägypten. - Marienoffizium und Totenoffizium nach Gebrauch von Langres. - Obsecro te in weiblicher Form 'michi famula tua'. Abraham Ortelius Theatrum orbis terrarum. - Parergon, sive veteris geograp(h)iae aliquot tabulae. - Nomenclator Ptolemaicus. - Zusammen 3 Teile in 1 Band. The unique position held by Ortelius' Theatrum in the history of cartography is to be attributed primarily to its qualification as 'the world's first regularly produced atlas' .. 46 : 31 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit 2 Kupfertiteln (1 koloriert), koloriertem gestochenen Porträt und zusammen 153 doppelblattgroßen Kupferkarten in Altkolorit. - KOLLATION: 6 Bll., 1 w. Bl., 4 Bll.; 1 w. Bl., 3 Bll., 1 w. Bl.; 1 w. Bl., 30 S., 3 Bll. LITERATUR: Koeman Ort 33. - Van der Krogt 31:052. - Phillips/Le Gear 412. A beautiful and complete copy of the first 'modern' atlas by Ortelius. One of 200 copies from the last edition published by J. Moretus of the Plantin Press on behalf of the heirs of Ortelius. Complete copy with all three parts 'Theatrum', 'Parergon' and 'Nomenclator'; probably one of the last copies printed in this edition: the title page of the Parergon is engraved as in the first Latin edition 1603 by J. B. Vrients (to whom the plates and rights of the 'Theatrum' had been sold by the heirs later in the year 1601), but the setting of the text on verso and on the following 3 leaves suggests that the engr. title has not just been substituted from another copy of the 1603 edition. With col. engr. portrait, 2 (1 col.) engr. title pages and 153 doublepage engr. mapsheets, all in magnificent contemporary coloring. Contemporary (publisher’s?) calf with faded gilt decoration (central arabesque with inscription 'Theatrum orbis terrarum' and cornerpieces), with ties. - The engr. portrait of Ortelius probably substituted from another copy of the 1601 edition (printed on thinner paper, mounted on new fold and remargined to fit the size of the atlas) and partly creased in the margins. Few maps very slightly (finger-)stained in the wide margins, few maps with split to bottom of centrefold, only occasionally with small marginal tears (the map 'Ducatus mediolanensis' with rebacked tear into the illustration), otherwise an unusually clean and well-preserved copy. The binding with skilful restorations to edges, extremies of spine and outer hinges. Overall a remarkable copy of this famous atlas in beautiful contemporary colors. - Engr. title of the 'Theatrum' with manuscript ownership entry by baron Ferdinand Maria Franz von Neuhaus (1655-1716). In a German private collection for almost 40 years. Dieses Objekt wird regel- oder differenzbesteuert angeboten.

Missale Manuale Sacerdotum. Lateinische Handschrift auf Pergament. Süddeutschland (vermutlich Regensburg), zweite Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit 1 nahezu blattgroßem Kanonbild (Kreuzigung) in Deckfarbenmalerei. - KOLLATION: 68 Bll. Eckabschnitt. Schließbeschläge entfernt. Für eine liturgische Gebrauchshandschrift sehr gut erhalten. LITERATUR: Vgl. zum Kanonbild: Heitz/Schreiber, Christus am Kreuz, Kanonbilder der in Deutschland gedruckten Messbücher des 15. Jahrhunderts , Straßburg 1910. Kyriß pl. 65, workshop Regensburg). 68 leaves. - First leaf with small corner cutt off at top, fittings of the binding removed.
