Insgesamt sehr gut erhalten, die aquarellierten Zeichnungen äußerst filigran. Manuscript with hand-drawn title page and 19 watercolored pen drawings of ships. Modern half cloth binding. - The title page with the imperial eagle of Prussia as vignette and handwritten dedication. - 1 sheet with further explanations, such as the scale used of 1:500. - Following with detailed tables on shipyards, length and width of the ships, draft and speed, armament, etc. - The exceptionally detailed drawings and extensive technical information suggest that the author of the manuscript was highly familiar with the subject. - Delicate and very evenly browned due to the paper, just slightly spotted in the margins. Altogether in very well preserved condition.

Zoologica Specifica - - August Johann Rösel von Rosenhof. Sammlung von drei Original-Zeichnungen mit Darstellungen von Schmetterlingen. Um 1740. Je Feder und Aquarelle auf Vergé. Blattmaße von 10,7 x 9 cm bis 13,5 x 10,5 cm. Punktuell auf Unterlage montiert. Wir danken Herrn Prof. Dr. Manfred Niekisch für seine fachliche Unterstützung. Provenienz: Auktionshandel, (Nummer verso). - Sammlung Dr. Werner Schultheiß. - Prachtvolle Sammlung von Zeichnungen für Rösel von Rosenhofs zwischen 1746 und 1761 erschienene Insecten-Belustigungen. Der Naturforscher, Miniaturist und Kupferstecher August Johann Rösel von Rosenhof (1705-1759) gilt als einer der Pioniere der modernen Entomologie. Er sammelte Larven und Raupen, um deren Entwicklung und Verhalten zu studieren, und fertigte detaillierte Notizen und Zeichnungen an. Die vorliegenden Blätter sind im Aufbau gleich gestaltet und zeigen je einen Schmetterling mit einer Flügelober- und unterseite, eine Raupe und eine Puppe. Es liegen folgende Inschriften und Konkordanzen zu den Kupferstichen in den Insecten-Belustigungen vor: Die große Dornenraupe auf den Weidenbaum. (1. Teil, Tafel I)- Die kleine Dornenraupe auf den Stagelberstauden. (1. Teil, Tafel V) - Die gelb haarige Raupe auf der Eiche. (4. Teil, Tafel XXVIII) - Die Zeichnungen sind in einem Umschlag aus einem gefalteten Doppelblatt montiert, auf dem in einer anderen Handschrift des frühen 19. Jahrhunderts Angaben zu Rösel sowie zu den Insecten-Belustigungen vermerkt sind. Die Zuordnung der Sütterlin-Handschrift auf den Zeichnungen erschwert sich durch ein nicht kohärentes Schriftbild Rösels, welches sich im Abgleich mit eigenhändigen Autographen (vgl. dazu UB Erlangen-Nürnberg, Brief an die Englische Societät in London vom 05.02.1744 und Quittung für C.H. Kessel vom 22.08.1749) und Inschriften in Zeichenalben (vgl. dazu UB Erlangen-Nürnberg, Ausgemalte Foliotafeln für ein Werk über die Eidechsen und Salamander u. Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Originalzeichnungen von Fröschen) ergibt. - Umschlag mit Ausschnitt und hs. Annotationen d. 20. Jh. in Bleistift. Die Zeichnungen in den Rändern minimal fleckig. Motive und Farben sehr gut erhalten. Von äußerster Seltenheit. Entomology. - We would like to thank Prof Dr Manfred Niekisch for his expert assistance. Entomology - Collection of three original drawings depicting butterflies. Mounted in spots on backing. - Splendid collection of drawings for Rösel von Rosenhof's "Insecten-Belustigungen" published between 1746 and 1761. The naturalist, miniaturist and engraver August Johann Rösel von Rosenhof (1705-1759) is considered one of the pioneers of modern entomology. He collected larvae and caterpillars to study their development and behaviour and made detailed notes and drawings. The present sheets have the same structure and each shows a butterfly with an upperside and underside of a wing, a caterpillar and a pupa. The following inscriptions and concordances to the engravings in the insect amusements are present: see above. - The drawings are mounted on a folded double leaf, on which information about Rösel and the insect amusements are noted in another early 19th century manuscript. The attribution of the Sütterlin manuscript on the drawings is made more difficult by the fact that Rösel's handwriting is not coherent when compared with autographs and inscriptions in drawing albums. - Backing with cut-out and handwritten annotations from the 20th century in pencil. The drawings minimally stained in the margins. Motifs and colours in very good condition. Of extreme rarity.

RTitel VD16 ZV 15529. Adams nur mit späteren Ausgaben. - Jacobus Ceporinus (geb. J. Wiesendanger, 1500-1525) studierte in Köln und Wien. Dank seiner ausgezeichneten Kenntnisse in der griechischen und hebräischen Sprache erhielt er 1522 in Zürich einen Lehrstuhl, verstarb allerdings kurz darauf. Die von ihm selbst zweimal überarbeitete Kurzgrammatik des Griechischen erfuhr mehrere Auflagen. - Letztes Bl. mit der Druckermarke fehlend. Etwas gebräunt, leicht fleckig und wasserrandig. Erstes und letztes Bl. mit hs. Besitzeintrag von 1691. Wohlerhalten. Cont. vellum with Spanish edges and later manuscript spine title. - Last leaf with the printer's mark missing. Somewhat browned, spotted and waterstained. First and last leaf with handwritten ownership inscription dated 1691. Well preserved.

RTitel (etwas fleckig und bestoßen). Grässe VI/2, 33. Brunet V, 666. - Tassos wichtigstes Werk, welches die Geschichte des ersten Kreuzzuges gegen die Türken erzählt. Das in viele Sprachen übersetzte Werk beschreibt die Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Christen und Muslimen während des ersten Kreuzzuges, die in der Einnahme Jerusalems durch die Christen gipfelten. - Titelbl. mit gelöschtem Besitzeintrag. Etwas gebräunt und teils fleckig. 1 Bl. mit restaurierter Fehlstelle im weißen Rand. Überaus dekorativer Druck mit reichem Buchschmuck. With engraved title, 20 engraved plates, rich woodcut book decoration and printer's mark at the end. Cont. vellum with Spanish edges and manuscript spine title (somewhat stained and bumped).- Tasso's most important work, which tells the story of the first crusade against the Turks. The work, translated into many languages, describes the conflicts between Christians and Muslims during the First Crusade, which culminated in the capture of Jerusalem by the Christians. - Title page with erased ownership entry. Somewhat browned and partially stained. 1 leaf with restored loss in white margin. Extremely decorative print with rich book decoration.

The surface is scratched and shows some cracks overall, as expected for lacquered works of this period. Some scattered minimal losses can be noticed, mostly occurring in the marginal areas. The lower cover is now detached. The spine is in fair condition.Overall the text bloc shows strong edges and corners with minimal scuff consistent with the lot's age and use. The opening bifolio is now detached form the text bloc. It shows strong pigments overall and is in good condition. Its right hand side folio is backed. The blue pigment of the left folio starts to corrode though the page, affecting the reverse text panel. The marginal areas are clean throughout. Only the expected darker marks left by use can be noticed, although some very occasional darker stains can also be seen, perhaps on three to five folios. The text panels are clean and crisp. They show very scattered smudging.Dated seal impressions in black ink filled in blue ink to first and third last pages, likely export stamps. The last with brief annotation above.The slip case in a fair condition despite a tear to one of its softer side. The gilt is strong overall.

Property from an Important Private CollectionKitab fadail al-anam,Safavid Iran, 17th centuryArabic and Persian manuscript on gold sprinkled paper, 144ff., 9ll. of black nasta'liq per page within green, gold and blue outer rule, in brown leather tooled binding with central medallion, marbled paper interior, stamp impression on opening blank folio dated AH 1107/1695 CE folio 17.6 x 11cm.Condition Report: The corners and edges are scuffed overall. Smudges and staining can be noticed through the manuscript. The smudging and staining does affect the text panels. One panel badly affected with some words rendered illegible on four lines. Some minimal and very occasional losses to some part of words, perhaps corrections, sometimes showing in the form of white blotches. At least three folios with modern purple ink or pencil strokes. One folio with a double strike affecting the text panel. Another with some partially and badly erased - maybe with a damp rubber ? - doodles in the upper margins. Another with its panel stroke through vertically. The two first bi folios are weak with losses and tears to edges and corners and extensive staining. The first two folios were detached and are now patched back to the text block. The first fifty folios (approx.) showing large brown stain affecting the text panel. The last fourth of this manuscript shows some water staining to the upper and marginal sections of the folios and to the lower parts near the gutter. The last folio shows some traces of glue to its left marginal area. The front and back cover are scuffed and n places are becoming detached from the spine.

A bilingual Coptic-Arabic Psalter,Coptic Egypt, Eastern Desert Monastery of St. Anthony, dated 26th day of Bashans (the ninth month of the Coptic Calendar) in 1546/1830ADCoptic-Arabic manuscript on paper, 264ff. (plus one paper endleaf at front, and 2 at back), apparently complete, single column of 19 lines per page in a late medieval Coptic bookhand with Arabic in Naskh script (the Arabic sometimes in column-wide blocks, but most often in thin columns parallel to the Coptic text), red rubrics, capitals in red or red edged with black pen, a few large initials in iridescent yellow, major texts opening with headbands of geometric penwork touched in dark faded red, numerous stylised yellow birds opening significant text sections, some water damage, spots and stains, with later paper repairs to edge of first leaf, binding of red pasteboards with leather spine and corners, with scuffs and lower board water damaged at edge with one corner warped This volume bears witness to the state of the Copts in the sixteenth century, when like the Samaritans and Christian minorities in the East they become integrated with and greatly reliant on Arabic book culture. Thus, in this book, with its distinctively Coptic decoration, the scribe has furnished the reader with a parallel translation into Arabic, and given an Arabic colophon on the last leaf noting that the work was finished on the 26th day of Bashans (the ninth month of the Coptic Calendar) in 1546, ff. 21.1 by 15cmProvenance: Bloomsbury Book Auctions, December 6, 2017, lot 98 Footnotes: A similar bilingual Coptic-Arabic psalter can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Acc. A Kashmiri Qur'anNorth India, late 18th centuryArabic manuscript on paper, 384ff, with 15ll. of black naskh arranged within cloud bands on gold per page, gold roundel verse markers, surah headers in cobalt naskh on a gold ground with gold and cobalt floral decoration, 7 illuminated bifolios, extensive marginal decoration in gold and polychrome, margins trimmed, rebound, in floral lacquer binding, with possible date to medallion, folio 18 x 10.2cm. Provenance: Formerly in the private collection of 'Abd al-Wahhab Khan, Nizam ul-Mulk (1848-1916) and thence by descent in the early 20th century to a private London collectionCondition Report: The lacquered covers shows some minimal losses to their edges and corners. The surface is scratched and shows some cracks overall, as expected for lacquered works of this period. Some scattered minimal losses can be noticed, mostly occurring in the marginal areas. The spine is in good condition.The text bloc is tightly bound safe for one central bifolio and for the sixth last folio which is now detached. The edges and corners are strong with some minimal scuffing consistent with the age and use of this lot. The gold, blue pigments and the black and red ink are strong overall. This lot presents as clean overall. The opening and closing bifolios are clean. The margins are clean with very light staining and very occasional and scattered pitting. Some occasional darker stains located to the edges can be noticed on two or three folios. The text panels are clean overall. The first central illuminated bifolio shows a stain to its right text panel. The first and last flyleaves are likely later additions.
