II lower cover part torn away, 4to, R. and J. Dodsley, 1755.⁂ An interesting example of a woman's reading. Much of the manuscript is of a biographical nature and is taken from various sources, such as Johnson's Lives of the Poets, William Coxe's Memoirs of John Duke of Marlborough (1818-1819), Colley Cibber and the letters of Horace Walpole, the lattertwo providing much on Lady Mary Montagu, who receives the most attention of the poet. At some point the volumes were in the hands of a late nineteenth century critic, equally well read, who has added a few notes of his own, including a useful query as to where "she" found her authority for aremark on Kneller. It may be that the books were merely in her library and the notes are not of her doing. However, the later critic, probably a family member, certainly took them to be her work. Each leaf of Dodsley's anthology, inlaid into two volumes of a quarto album, has been interleavedwith pages of manuscript material. The volumes have the bookplate of Eliza Gulston (1769-1857),

(A. Manganaro. Un incunabolo "ritrovato"di Battista Spagnoli, il Mantovano: l'Oratio in funere Ferrandi regis (1496) in «Le Forme e la Storia» II (2009), p. 260).I: HC 12278; GW M29126; BMC V 480, 547; IGI 7147; Goff P12.Incunable. (Colophon:) [Strasburgo]: impressit Johannes Prüss Ciuis Argentinus in aedibus zum Thiergarten, 1506.Two works in one volume, 4° (258x143 mm) I: Collation: a-e⁴, f-g⁶, h-i⁴. [40] leaves. Text in one column, 30 lines. Type 111R. Two different Sessa printer's devices, on the title-page and the verso of fol. i4 respectively. Four woodcut decorated six-line initials, the ones on fols. a2r and g1r illuminated in light blue and yellow. Numerous smaller Lombard initials. Wormhole to the first four leaves, affecting a few letters; traces of mould to the first three quires, pale waterstain to the gutter. II: Collation: A⁶ B⁴ C⁸ D-E⁴ F⁸ G-H⁴ I⁸ K-L⁴ M⁸ N-O⁴ P⁸ Q⁶. [6], LXXX, [2] leaves. Woodcut decorated initials. Waterstains, traces of mould. 16th-century leather over wooden boards; remains of the original clasp. Traces of inked title on the upper cover. Losses to the spine, the lower cover rather abraded. An early hand added a few manuscript notes in brown ink. I: Second edition, the first available, of the poetical work by Domenico Farina from Sora (1460-1528), and dedicated to his friend and patron Marcantonio Sabellico. Farina entered in 1478 the Roman Academy (Accademia Romana) founded by Pomponio Leto, adopting the nickname of Domenico Palladio Sorano. Owing to their elegance, his epigrams were highly praised in the Roman milieu, and Farina was also responsible for the epitaph inscribed on Leto's grave. The first edition of the Epigrammata appeared in Venice on 4 September, recorded in only one copy preserved in the Bibliothèque Mazarine, Paris (GW M29128). The style of the woodcut initials embellishing the volume confirms the attribution of printing to Bernardino Vitali. The edition offerred here is of the greatest rarity, only three copies are recorded in US institutional libraries, and only a copy was seen at auction in the 20th-century.II: Rare edition of the ten Ecloghe by the Mantuan Battista Spagnoli (1447-1516), who composed them before he entered the Carmelite order. The first edition was printed in Mantua in 1498, under the title Adolescentia. Erasmus of Rotterdam was among its readers, and called Farina 'the Christian Virgil'. The work enjoyed a wide popularity, and was especially praised by Shakespeare, who included the first verses from one ecloga by the "good old Mantuan" in his Love's Labour's Lost.
