His hand not copied minutely but position of all marks is accurate so that conclusions re method may be drawn from this as well as from the original.’. (1)

RODGERS RICHARD: (1902-1979) American Composer, famous for his collaboration with Oscar Hammerstein on various Broadway musicals. An interesting T.L.S., Richard Rodgers, one page, 4to, Sixth Avenue, New York, 28th March 1947, to Richard Miles. Rodgers thanks his correspondent for their letter and continues to answer their questions in three numbered paragraphs, in part, `I do not use any of the Schillinger devices and have found any mathematical approach to composition extremely stultifying...Almost without exception the music for the songs I did with Larry Hart was written first and the lyrics followed....I do not make my own piano parts for print. These are made by Dr. Sirmay at Chappells from my original manuscript which is an extremely full and complicated one and is devised primarily as a structure for orchestration.` VG

[AUTOGRAPH COLLECTING]: JOLINE ADRIAN H. (1850-1912) Lawyer and Philographer, author of Meditations of an Autograph Collector (1902) and Rambles in Autograph Land (1913). Autograph M.S., Adrian H. Joline, eighteen pages, 8vo, n.p., n.d. Joline`s manuscript, with some corrections in his hand, is entitled Concerning Autographs and states, in part, `Fortunately all people do not find pleasure in the same things, and sometimes a man`s fancies are regarded with scornful contempt by other men who doubtless have hobbies of their own. A hardback edition of Moments of Love-Poems to Emma by Thomas Hardy, published by The Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society, 1997, being an attractive manuscript facsimile and printed text of poems written by Hardy inspired by his first wife. With an original printed limitations page signed (`Thomas Hardy`) by Hardy with his name alone in bold black ink lightly tipped in. Limited Edition number 126 of 157. Green leather quarter binding with green cloth covers and contained in a matching slipcase. Together with Florence Hardy (1879-1937) English Writer of Children`s stories, second wife of Thomas Hardy. An interesting A.L.S., Florence Hardy, one page, 8vo, Max Gate, Dorchester, 12th July 1918, to a lady. Hardy informs her correspondent that she cannot induce her husband into providing the required autograph, explaining `He has been asked to autograph so many books etc. for the Red Cross & similar good causes, & now he absolutely refuses to give another. WILLIAM III: (1650-1702) King of England, Scotland & Ireland 1689-1702. D.S., William R, as King, at the head, one page (vellum), oblong folio, Camp at Eppegem, 1st August 1693. The manuscript document is a military commission appointing William Cormack to be an Ensign in the Regiment of Foot commanded by Colonel John Sidcomb. Countersigned at the foot by William Blathwayt (1649?-1717) British Civil Servant and Politician who established the War Office as a department of the British Government, serving as Secretary at War 1683-92. Blathwayt also played an important role in administering the Thirteen Colonies of North America. With blind embossed paper seal affixed. Some light overall age wear, about VG The present document was signed just days after The Battle of Landen (or Neerwinden), fought in present-day Belgium during the Nine Years` War on 29 July 1693 between the French army of Marshal Luxembourg and the Allied army of King William III. The French assaulted the Allied position three times beforethe French Cavalry finally penetrated the allied defences and drove William`s army from the field in a rout. The battle was, however, quite costly for both sides, the French losing 9,000 men to the Allies` 19,000, the French failed to follow up on their victory, allowing William to escape.
