In other instances, there is suggestions of improvement to suppliers, 'you should have given a little more variety to some of the Dial put a gold circle in two or three of them people is so very difficult and fantastical an sixpence in a Dial may by chance be two or three shilling or more our way in selling a clock.' Braque, Georges - - René Char. La Bibliothèque est en feu. Mit einer handnummerierten Original-Radierung von Georges Braque. Paris, Louis Broder, 1956. 20 nn. Bll. 4°. With a hand numbered original etching by Georges Braque. Orig. wrappers with mounted cover title, in original jute chemise with spine label. - Fifth volume of the collection "Écrits et Gravures". - One of 100 numbered copies (total ed. 146). Signed by Braque and Char in the imprint. - Printed on Vélin d'Arches. The plate of the etching was destroyed after completion of the work. - Rare collection of poetic aphorisms about the role of the poet in facsimile manuscript. The title "La Bibliothèque est en feu" is borrowed from René Char's past as a Resistance fighter. It was in fact a coded message from Radio London announcing to Captain Alexandre, alias René Char, a parachute drop of containers he was to pick up near Céreste. One of the containers actually caught fire and started a terrible blaze. - Complete with the publisher's announcement sheet loosely enclosed.
Physik - Astronomie - Scholastik - - Cursus philosophicus ad usum scola benedictina accomodatus. Manuskript mit 1 gestoch. Frontispiz (Paris, Crespy) u. zahlr., z.T. gefalt. Baumdiagrammen, Tabellen und Tuschezeichnungen. 1740-41. 166, 126, 173 S. Gr.-8°. Restaurierter Ldr. d. Zt. (etwas berieben). Jahrhundert. Physics - Astronomy - Scholasticism - Manuscript with 1 engr. frontispiece (Paris, Crespy) and many, partly folded tree diagrams, tables and pen-and-ink drawings. - The allegorical frontispiece depicts St. Benedict kneeling before the Holy Scriptures, illuminated by the sphere of knowledge. - Manuscript course on paper for the use of a Benedictine institution, written in an intelligent and regular ink handwriting, in Latin. Illustrated with numerous tree diagrams, tables, some of them folding, and pen-and-ink drawings, captioned and explained in the text. This important (professorial?) work consists of three parts: scholasticism, metaphysics, physics, the physical part being illustrated with interesting pen drawings representing scientific instruments, various experiments (vacuum, fluid dynamics, etc.), cosmological systems. The meticulousness with which the figures have been drawn and described suggests the possibility of a manuscript prepared for publishing purposes. The last part, physics, particularly illustrated (armillary spheres, various cosmological systems, scientific instruments, description of meteorological phenomena, arboriculture) offers an obvious scientific interest, witness plate 7 on page 92 describing the progress of knowledge concerning the physical nature of the vacuum as well as the experiments of Boyle, Toriccelli and Huyghens on the gravity of the mass of the air. - In a contemporary, restored binding in full basane. Isolated detached leaves or mounted pieces of paper. Some worming in places. One leaf with tear. At the end somewhat waterstained and with some mould stains. Some marginal tears. - Extraordinary document of the scientific and philosophical education in the 18th century.

First edition of Platon in Greek by Heinrich Petri in Basle, edited by Marcus Hopper and based on the edition of Grynaeus of 1534. - With woodcut printer's mark and woodcut initials. Contemp. half pigskin with spine label, boards covered with manuscript on vellum (rubbed, bumped, soiled, some wormholes, small defects to covering, vellum heavily browned). - Bound with: Euclid. As listed above. With woodcut printer's mark, head- and tailpieces and woodcut diagrams within text. - Rare edition of Euclid by Conradus Dasypodius and Christianus Herlinus addressed in print to the senate of Schaffhausen and dated 10 August 1566. Contains a brief address to the reader by Ioannes Sturm. Books 1 and 5 were edited by Christianus Herlinus, after his death 2, 3, 4 and 6 were completed by Contadus Dasypodius. The Euclidean definitions and enunciations are given in Greek and probably use the text from Dasypodius' Strasbourg 1564b/Strasbourg 1564/Strasbourg 1564a. The blocks for the diagrams from that set of editions are re-used (for volume 1 these were first used in Strasbourg 1538 and re-used in Strasbourg 1559). The Latin translation of this matter, and of the proofs, is based on that of the 1564 editions for books 1 and 2, but the proofs are reduced in length and supplemented by proofs in syllogisms, which are apparently new. The volume also contains indexes and a concluding commentary. - Some browning throughout, some spotting or foxing in places, a few old notes, marginalia and fine underlining by old hand in ink, first title with ownership notes by Justus Jungmann and Heinrich Jungmann as well as donation note by Christian Distelmeier to Rudolph Goclenius, inner joints with small worm traces, inside fold reinforced at title, otherwise overall good condition.

TRÉPIED RITUEL EN FER DAMASQUINÉ ARGENT ET ORTIBET ORIENTAL, DERGÉ, XVE/XVIE SIÈCLE Himalayan Art Resources item no. 205044 98 cm (38 5/8 in.) highFootnotes:A SILVER AND GOLD DAMASCENED IRON RITUAL TRIPOD STAND EASTERN TIBET, DERGE, 15TH/16TH CENTURY Tripod stands such as these had a multitude of purposes, as the illustrations in the Gold Manuscript from the Fournier Collection in The Secret Visions of the Great Fifth Dalai Lama reveal. The images depict tripods of this kind holding torma offerings, bumpas, kapalas, and in some cases show implements balanced on top of one another. Clearly used for tantric rituals and empowerment ceremonies, this tripod stand favors a style closely associated to the Ming court. Like other iron implements included in this sale in the damascened style of Eastern Tibet, the entire surface of the legs are covered in gold and silver inlays of scrolling foliate designs. The upper rim which would have held the offerings in place is trimmed in a geometric motif, while churning waves define the ends of the three cabriole legs. Wrathful faces are inlaid along the edges of the legs with the tops surmounted by three silver skull-heads, all of which indicate a conflated Tibeto-Chinese style. Tripod stands of this kind are known as early as the 9th/10th centuries as indicated from a painting from Dunhuang. Their use in ritual offerings is documented in paintings, as seen in a 14th-century painting of Amitabha which shows in the lower right corner the eight auspicious symbols atop tripods with a kneeling donor figure to the side (HAR 60680). Another iron and damascened tripod is illustrated in Thurman & Weldon, Sacred Symbols: The Ritual Art of Tibet, New York, 1999, fig. 66.Published:Natalie Bazin, Rituels tibétains: Visions secrètes du Vème Dalaï Lama, Paris, 2002, p. 167, no. 141.Exhibited:Rituels tibétains: Visions secrètes du Vème Dalaï Lama, Musée Guimet, Paris, 6 November 2002 - 24 February 2003.Provenance:Christie's, New York, 17 October 2001, lot 131.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
