Archive of autograph letters signed and one ticket addressed to him (16) or Lady Cockburn (1), beginning with the ticket to the great Earl of Chatham's funeral, and continuing with letters from Thomas Pitt, the latter's nephew, (1737-1794, M.P. for Old Sarum, from 1784 1st Lord Camelford, Sir James's second wife Anne was his cousin), from Lady Camelford to Lady Cockburn, and from George Fulke Lyttelton (1763-1828, from 1808 2nd Baron of the 1794 creation), 17 items out of originally 21 (the letters from William Pitt the younger, about the lack of a post in the excise for Cockburn, and discontinuing Lady Cockburn's pension, apparently being removed some time about 1900), together 1 ticket and 36 sides 4to plus conjugate blanks or address leaves, with a Checklist, London, Petersham, Ham Common, LiÅ ge, Aix-la-Chapelle, Le Vigan, Boconnoc and Oxford, 1778 and 1782 - 1790, neatly stitched in a mid-19th century paper cover with decorative manuscript title and list of items, generally in good condition, a few pieces neatly secured or mended with gauze, closed tear in blank part of upper cover, touching the old list of contents on verso without loss A detailed list is available on request. Praed to front free endpaper, additionally author's address '32 Bromfield St' added in ink above imprint, plus four pages of neat ink manuscript poetry in the author's hand to final two blanks, titled 'Rota et Rotula, by Abel Elder', 'The Wheelman (olden style)', 'To the author of Lyra Bicyclica' (by Sidney), 'Equites Rotarum', 'Wheel vs. Horse' and 'Currente Bicyclo', inner hinges partly split, original cloth over boards, some slight fraying and damp bleaching, rubbed and spine partly faded, 8vo Rare. The printed poems are largely parodies of New England poets. (1)

A collection of approximately 40 manuscript deeds relating to the West Country, circa 1713-1890s, including 35 on vellum, many relating to inhabitants of Cullompton, Devon, Dawlish, also Callington, Cornwall (1718), and Milverton (1724), various sizes, one Latin manuscript document on vellum, probably 15th century, somewhat soiled and a little loss to centre of upper margin, affecting two or three words, the sheet measuring 35 x 9.7 cm, together with a small quantity of 19th century photographs, including 17 views of Benares, Calcutta and Bombay, a view from Fitzgerald Point looking towards Mount Malcolm, etc., an 18th century engraved map of Graecia Homerica, an etching by Luigi Rossini entitled Veduta dei Grandiosissimi avenzi del Tempio di Giove, Rome, 1820 (some spotting and soiling), and a folio album of English pressed flowers and plants, circa 1886-92, each with ink caption, locations including Cambridge, Chetton, Isle of Wight, and elsewhere, original black half morocco, rubbed and a little wear to edges, folio (a carton)

Printed document signed by William Bentinck as governor of Madras appointing James Annesley as surgeon, Fort St George, Madras, 24 September 1805, printed document on vellum, completed in manuscript, signed 'W Bentinck' with signatures of additional witnesses, wax and paper seal intact, slightly soiled, 3 longitudinal creases from folding, 20 x 33 cm, together with Printed document signed by John Elphinstone as governor of Madras, appointing John Francis Erskine second lieutenant in the 2nd Regiment, Native Infantry, Fort St George, Madras, 29 June 1841, printed document on vellum, completed in manuscript, signed 'Elphinstone' with signatures of additional witnesses, embossed paper seal, 2 creases from folding, very slightly soiled, 25.5 x 30 cm James Annesley (1780-1847) became a pioneer of tropical medicine: his Researches into the Causes, Nature, and Treatment of the most prevalent Diseases of India, published in 1828, the most complete account of diseases in India to date. Bentinck was recalled as governor of Madras in 1807 following the Vellore rebellion, but went on to become governor-general of India (1828-35). *Fisher (Paul Hawkins, 1779-1873). Author's original manuscript for 'Notes and Recollections of Stroud, Gloucestershire', mid 19th century, written on 467 leaves mainly to one side only, leaves either pinned or sewn at one corner, contained as two bundles in worn and torn paper wrappers, one titled "This cover contains the MS from which the 1st vol of Notes & Recollections of Stroud Gloucestershire' was printed except that some corrections were made in the proof slips which do not always appear here", together with Reminiscences of Stroud. Being a Series of Papers by P.H. Fisher Esq., of the Castle, taken from the Stroud Journal, 1860, a collection of articles pasted onto loose quarto sheets, with many manuscript amendments by the author (who presumably used this as the basis for his later work), plus other related manuscript material and pamphlets etc., including a manuscript volume entitled 'The Book of Gleanings & Odd Things' being a diary and anecdotes 1820-1865 by Mrs. P.H. Fisher (nee Anne Colbourne), 121 pages of manuscript, contemporary boards (loose), lacking spine, slim 4to 'Notes and Recollections of Stroud, Gloucestershire' was first published in 1871. Scottish Journal. A Tour in Scotland, by James Macandrew, 1841 [cover-title], pp.56, written in neat manuscript to rectos and versos, upper hinge partially splitting, original red half morocco, with gilt lettered morocco label on upper cover, marked and scuffed, with slight loss at spine ends, slim 4to James Macandrew (1819-1887) was a prominent New Zealand ship owner and politician. He was born in Scotland, probably in Aberdeen, and settled in Otago in New Zealand in 1851. He served as a Member of Parliament there from 1853 until his death, and was the last Superintendent of Otago Province. (1)

Gibb, [1845], title page, 3 pp. contents, 33 ordinances dated 1837-45, 13 orders in council dated 1835-45, and 2 proclamations dated 1840 and 1844 (of 3; lacking the proclamation concerning transportation of convicts), various paginations, contemporary half calf, manuscript paper label mounted to front board, spine defective, front board detached, several leaves loose, a few slightly chipped or frayed, folio (32 x 20.5 cm), together with 'Ordinances, 1862-1900' [cover title], St Helena: printed at the Governnment Printing Department by John Elliott [... by Edward Watson ... at the Government Printing Office by Charles Bruce], 1862-1900, 144 ordinances dated 1862-1900, 2 orders in council dated 1863 and 1873, various paginations, mainly printed on blue paper, mounted on paper guards, annotated throughout by a 20th-century hand mainly in red ink or pencil with details of repeals and amendments, many of the repealed ordinances crossed through once, contents shaken, many leaves loose, some spotting and staining, a few with chips or closed tears, one (1870 ordinance no. 1) torn with loss of text, contemporary quarter cloth, marbled boards, sheep tips, printed paper labels to spine and front board, worn, spine-label largely perished, folio (33 x 20 cm) Two volumes containing nearly 200 St Helena-printed colonial ordinances, orders in council and proclamations concerning all conceivable aspects of life on the island, including commerce, agriculture, fishing and whaling, public health, law and order, constitutional matters, and public finances. The ordinances are dated from 1837, shortly after its establishment as a crown colony in 1834, to 1900, when it was called upon to accommodate thousands of Boer prisoners of war. Notable ordinances include 1834 ordinance number 29, concerning the abolition of slavery on the island, and 1900 number 2, remitting all duty on gifts given to the Boer prisoners. The second volume in particular appears to have originally been retained for the records of the colonial government. (2)

Autograph letter from 'An Old Married Woman' regarding the question 'Shall Women Vote?', October 21st 1868, holograph manuscript in black ink on laid paper, an early pro-Suffragette letter arguing the case for women to vote, based on the practice for voting in India where a woman who holds shares in the East India Company has the right to vote for the election of Directors of the Company - effectively voting for those who will govern India, the anonymous writer states that women are not ignorant of politics and would "discuss the chief arguments of the day with an amount of national common sense that would astonish those who suppose them to be all ignorant fools", in a footnote, the lady says that she sends her name and address, to be withheld from publication, but sadly this information is not present, 4 pages, 8vo (1)

*Garibaldi (Giuseppe, 1807-1882). Letter signed, 'G. Garibaldi', Caprera, 14 March 1864, complying with an autograph request in English from Lieutenant Colonel J.H. Chambers, blue stationery, one page, 8vo, together with a brief manuscript pass signed 'G. Garibaldi', 2 November, no year, official inkstamp, a little creased and soiled, one page, 8vo, plus a carte de visite of Garibaldi (3)

*Mazzini (Giuseppe, 1805-1872). Printed document signed, 'Joseph Mazzini', 15 Radnor Street, King's Road, Chelsea, London, 30 October 1853, issued by the Italian National Party, a printed five-line plea for funds to secure the release of political prisoners, Mazzini has signed and written his address, added the day ('30'), and underlined 'to the slow death of the Italian dungeons', additional manuscript side note in another hand, 'Alas! for the noble poerio! etc', minor spotting and creasing, one page, oblong 8vo Carlo Poerio, together with other political prisoners, was incarcerated in appalling conditions in a labour camp on the island of Nisida. He had been given a sentence of 19 years, and was not released until 1858, due in part to Gladstone's 1851 report on the inhumane conditions in Neopolitan prisons. (1)

Mazzini', no place, 1 December 1853, to (?)Venenni, in Italian, a little spotting, one page with integral blank, album guard remains, together with two other similar autograph letters signed from Mazzini in Italian, one dated 1851, one to Mr Potter and one to Mazzoleni, all 16mo, plus an autograph note of jottings in English, beginning 'A grave is a sacred thing, but it is not a cradle. It is a landmark for the traveller...', signed and dated December 1865, one page, oblong 8vo, laid on card, plus a clipped sentiment and signature pasted beneath a carte-de-visite portrait of Mazzini and a brief autograph declaration concerning the authenticity of a document, clipped and pasted on to an old paper sheet with manuscript biographical notes on Mazzini written beneath, oblong 8vo (6)

Neat 18th-century manuscript copy of the chronicle of Florence by Florentine patrician and man of letters Filippo de'Nerli (1485-1556), first published in Augsburg in 1728 as Commentari de' fatti civili occorsi dentro la citta di Firenze dall'anno 1215 al 1537. Provenance: Cecil H. Clough FSA (1930-2017), with a laid-in photocopied letter from Clough in Italian suggesting that the manuscript was probably made from a copy of the 1728 edition. (1)

Spencer was author of 'Colour Photography in Practice', published by Pittman, 1948. This photograph, according to the inscription on the folder, was loaned by Pittman for the exhibition Hobbies and Reading, one of the National Book League touring exhibitions from the Festival of Britain, 1951.
