A collection of C19th & C20th manuscript diaries, seven of which dated 1903-1919 appear to be the diaries of Lady Constance Baird (1867-1931), member of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (Princess Royal's Volunteer Corps) a British independent all-female charity which was formed in 1907 originally to provide rapid first aid to injured soldiers by travelling on horseback. In WW1, they drove ambulances and originally the Army wanted nothing to do with them so they supported the Belgians and French. Her four diaries for 1916-1919 with m/s entries re driving to Paris Plage Le Touquet, Etaples, convalescent Hospital Boulogne, entry for Friday February 15 1918 "Fine day, raw cold wind. Godden[?] & I worked on car all the morning - taking down magneto & cleaning it & tuning up plugs. Went to Boulogne at 3,30 & took a girl from Woodside in. Met boat, brought out an M.O. & a V.A.D. for St. Johns also Sister Workman. Car pulling much better but still pretty hard to steer", photographic postcard of female WW1 ambulance driver from Constance Baird loosely inserted in 1916 diary, (presumably image is of Constance Baird), postally used with British Red Cross and Field Censor inkstamps, these 7 diaries each with ownership signatures/inscriptions "Constance Baird"/"Contie Baird" at front, each full or very near full of m/s pen & ink entries, near uniform leather gilt by Houghton & Gunn/Asprey, spines sunned/worn, each approx. 13 x 11cm, plus 2 other diaries similar 1909 & 1911 with ownership sigs. of Norah D. (India, Punjab), an album containing 44 circa mid 20th Century photographs of Punjab school miniature paintings, images mainly depicting Sikh Gurus, Punjab rulers & Indian Gods, the album compiled by R.P. Srivastava, scholar and author on Punjab painting, each photo loosely corner mounted to a card leaf of the album, the majority of leaves with Srivastava's manuscript captions/notes beneath each photo, images approx 9x12cm - 9x14cm. A manuscript book of remedies, cures, medicines etc circa 1836-1896, 100+ pages of manuscript entries including accounts entries, some receipts/remedies etc, "Cure for Head-ache, take of spirits of wine one ounce, camphor four drachms, volatile spirit of camphor four drachms, mix and apply to the head, with the hand frequently", "A very nice salve for healing sores & wounds. 2oz of Burgundy pitch. 1oz of good beeswax. 1oz of lard put them in a jar, melt them in an oven, stir them now and then with a stick of lead. Recipe given to us by Mrs Barton August 24th 1876", "1838 1 Jan. Case of Scurvy in the hands [?] 20 years...2nd Jan. Blotches in the face. Mr Joseph[?] Hawley embrocation pills & drink...4th Jan. Scrofula very bad...a boy named Morstyn [?] aged 12 years - brought by his mother... flesh eaten round his neck, shoulder and mouth and left eye - very thin...St Thomas's Hospital six months but got worse - dsimissed July 1836 pronounced incureable. Washed the parts with ---[?] and annointed them with...." etc etc, similar remarks on treatments/medicines for patients with King's Evil, wound on thigh, "woman from Limehouse for husband Rheumatism gave her box of pills" "Tuesday...Woman from workhouse...gave Embn. for piles" "Mrs Riches - lump between the breasts...", plus other receipts including cure for ringworm; mixture for worms; for the Rheumatism; for Hooping Cough; "The way to make Queen Anne's Salve", cure for toothache, " for the relief of bronchial tubes. Jan. 9 1865. Roast a turkey [?] open and put in as much Brimstone as will lay upon a fourpenny piece, and eat it in bed. repeat it a few nights till well. This recipe from an old gent in the railway carriage"; for dislocations and broken bones before setting; for dropsy etc etc, some accounts entries also for clothing, some domestic receipts etc, the m/s book possibly relating/originating from London, mentions of Covent Garden, King's Road, Chelsea, Limehouse, old vellum (worn), printed copper engraved label to front pastedown "Hay, Printer, Stationer & Bookbinder, No. 114 Long Lane, Borough"

Halesworth), c.1812, with 35 well executed manuscript pen, ink and wash maps, each with corresponding m/s records of the land occupiers, and with their respective acreage/area of land divided into columns for arable and pasture land., with a further 21 pages of manuscript list of land occupiers and proprietors at front, each with reference number referring to their numbered plots of land on the manuscript maps, inkstamp "J. Neave Westhall" to blank leaf at front, 4to (25.5 x 21cm), rebound in full crushed dark brown morocco gilt, compass vector design in gilt and inlaid burgundy morocco to front cover, inlaid green, brown and tan morocco gilt map design to lower cover, covers decoratively ruled in gilt, spine with burgundy morocco gilt labels and gilt in compartments, housed in custom made leather backed clamshell boxThe 3 manors in Westhall were Westhall Hall, Empole's and Barrington's. The main manor of Westhall Hall was held by the Crown at the time of King John. The manor was sold in 1589 to Thomas Feltham who sold it in 1613 to Edmund Knevitt who sold it to Edmund Bohun in 1622. It remained in the Bohun family until the early 1800s when it was purchased by Alexander Adair (1743-1834) of Flixton Hall. Bacon's manor was conveyed to the Bohun's in 1563 and followed the course of the main manor, which absorbed the other manors.Alexander Adair inherited the Flixton Hall estate from his uncle in 1783, and at his death bequeathed it to his distant kinsman, (Hugh) William Adair (1754-1844).He died 17 March 1834, aged about 91, and is commemorated by a memorial in St. James' church, Piccadilly, London. Will proved 11 April 1834 (estate under £700,000); his fortune was left mainly to members of the Baring and Roe families and only the Flixton estate passed to his Adair kinsman.

[Head (Richard) and Francis Kirkman]. The English rogue continued in the life of Meriton Latroon and other extravagants. Comprehending the most eminent Cheats of Both Sexes, the Third [& Fourth] part, 4 engraved plates to each part, both titles with date corrected to 1680 in ink manuscript, title of third part with contemporary ink ownership inscription, third part trimmed at head, a couple times shaving headline, a few instances of early ink correction or marginalia, B1 with printing flaw and short tear repaired, with loss to a couple letters and catchword, B2 chipped at upper corner, with loss to pagination, E1 with small hole within text, the odd short marginal tear, a couple times running into text but without loss, some browning and light foxing, contemporary calf, neatly rebacked, corners worn, endpapers renewed, small 8vo, for Francis Kirkman, and are to be sold at his shop over against the Custom[e]-House, in Thames-Street, 1671; sold not subject to return. ⁂ A popular work, published in parts from 1665. This copy appears to be an amalgam, with the titles of the first edition of the Third and Fourth parts, published in 1671, but with the text seemingly supplied from a later edition.

Rye House Plot.- [Sprat (Thomas)] A True Account and Declaration of The Horrid Conspiracy Against the Late King, His Present Majesty, and the Government, second edition, initial imprimatur f., with 19th century ink ownership inscription of Mark Kennaway, ?his engraved bookplate and bookplate of Alexander Meyrick Broadley to verso, contemporary ink ownership inscription of Joh: Newell to title and rear pastedown, bound with Copies of the Informations and Original Papers Relating to the Proof of the Horrid Conspiracy, folding engraved plan, with short tear but no loss, together 2 works in 1 vol., later manuscript copy of contemporary printed accounts of conspirators to front and rear endpapers, some light damp-staining at end, upper hinge weak, contemporary calf, worn at corners, joints split but holding, endpapers renewed, [Wing S5067 & S5029], folio, In the Savoy, Thomas Newcomb, 1685.⁂ The Rye House plot was a conspiracy to kill King Charles II and his brother James, Duke of York, as they passed through Hertfordshire on the way back to London from the races at Newmarket. While the collation of this copy does not conform to the ESTC, with the second work without leaf 2D2, it appears textually complete. The endpapers contain manuscript copies of speeches given by conspirators Lord Russel, Thomas Walcot, William Hone and John Rouse.

Sinking of the Lusitania.- R.M.S. "Lusitania" from New York, May 1st 1915. "Queen Mary" Description of Machinery Installation, original cloth with gilt Cunard White Star logo to upper cover, minor soling to upper cover, spine ends bumped, [c.1934], 8vo (2)⁂ First mentioned, this copy appears to have been in use in the Office of the Cunard Company in Liverpool in the wake of the sinking of the Lusitania (May 7th 1915), and to have been used by a staff member. The title of the final annotated section, Unidentified Remains, has been scored through, with a manuscript inscription added, "Lusitania Disaster May 7th 1915. List of Articles still unclaimed in Company's safe - Dec. 1916". The following pages are covered in ink lines and deletions, presumably keeping track of what had and had not been claimed from the company safe during the course of that year. II. Alliance British and Foreign Life and Fire Assurance Company.- Indenture, Francis Baring sale of shares to Louis Lucas, printed document with manuscript insertions, signatures of Baring, Lucas and Robert Shedden Scrimgeour, blind-stamp to top edge, fold-lines, c.1830; and 4 other Indentures, all signed by Francis Baring, 365 x 270 mm (5)⁂ Alliance was formed by Sir Moses Montefiore and Nathan Mayer Rothschild in 1824. Joining them as founding shareholders were the prominent Quaker Samuel Gurney, and the financiers John Irving and Francis Baring.

Alabama slavery.- Guardian Alexander Trotter's report to court of Washington County Alabama of annual income to heir James N. Thompson a minor, from "the hire of the negroes" in 1847, manuscript, 1p., folds, slightly browned, 245 x 195mm., 30th January 1847.⁂ It is reported, "Boy Lemuel indisposed and not hired. The small negroes are kept at home at no charge."
Mississippi slavery.- Complainant Sinclair D Gervais against Elbert G Head and Samuel A Davis defendants offer numerous slaves as mortgage against the penal sum of twenty thousand dollars, court document, manuscript, 2pp., folds, browned, folio, 1821.⁂ List of slaves, including: Old Quoco, Sally, Phillis, Celia "and the following children", Sally, Harry, Simon, Jack.

Made between William Peacan (merchant), John Nicolson, esq., Stephen Denton (butcher), James Miles (butcher, deceased), all of Kingston, and Joseph Piercey (a "gentleman"). The document states, "It shall and may be lawful to and for the said Joseph Piercey his Heirs and assigns at all times hereafter peaceably and quietly to have hold and enjoy the said negroe slave herein before named and hereby bargained and sold as aforesaid and to receive and take the Rent civic labour profits and services of the said slave to his or their own use and benefit without any lawful let suit trouble denial Hindrance molestation or Interruption whatsoever". Images of Saint Sebastian, Madonna with Child, Saint Christopher, Catharina of Alexandrië. William Greenly was said to have been 'an excellent scholar and antiquary, and a man of great goodness of heart and simple manners'. Elizabeth, or Eliza as she was known, married Admiral Sir Isaac Coffin, a man more than ten years her senior, and an erratic seafarer who suffered from gout. Eliza was said to have 'some eccentric habits' and after the first year of marriage he went to visit friends and stayed away for seven years. Eliza formed a significant library at Titley Court, which was sold in these rooms in 2016. Cox I, 306. - Lowndes II, 1520. Thomas Maurice, Anglican clergyman and Orientalist, "was one of the first to popularize Eastern history and religions." (Cox I, 305)With single-page manuscript letter signed by Thomas Maurice to Elizabeth Greenly, dated 19 Princes Street, Cavendish Square [London], 5th July 1798, thanking her for her subscription to his History of India. 'I have this day sent to Messrs Shephard & Addlington my first volume, hot-pressed, and with the best plates I could select. I have taken the liberty to add to it, ... my Elegy on my great and lamented friend, Sir William Jones, and The Crisis, a poem which I have just published.'A further Supplement to the Modern History of Hindostan was published in 1810, entitled Supplement to The Modern History of India : bringing that history down to the year of our Lord 1788, when the imperial Mogul dynasty, by the blinding and dethronement of Shah Aulum, virtually became extinct.
