Lot 584

An original and extremely rare poster, advertising a performance by 'Bazooka Joe' with 'Support Band' at Central St. Martin's, 6th November 1975. The support band, as revealed only on the day, would be Malcolm McLaren's new group 'The Sex Pistols' and this was to be their debut performance. The poster was designed by Bazooka Joe band member Stuart Goddard (later better known as Adam Ant), it is believed that perhaps only four examples were handmade by Goddard at the time. This is the only example to have come to market thus far.Measures 502 x 355mm. As per the vendor the poster is an enlarged photocopy of a black and white artwork produced with Letraset and then overlaid with red and blue Letraset Letrafilm Pantone gloss colour tint overlay. The colours are a reference to the Bazooka Joe bubble gum wrapper colours. The vendor remembers:"We were told there would be a support band but we were not told the name of the band hence the “+ support band” written on the top left of the poster. When the band turned up with Malcolm McClaren we found out they were called the Sex Pistols and this was their first ever gig. They told us their van had broken down on their way to the gig and didn’t have their amps or drums, they only had a guitar and a bass, and asked if they could borrow ours to which we said yes.Numerous articles have been written about this gig because it was the Sex Pistols first ever gig but also because a fight broke out between us because we pulled the plug on the Pistols as they were playing so badly and trashing our equipment and a bit of argy bargy followed."Read more on the concert and night here - https://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/article/sex-pistols-first-gig-bazooka-joe-danny-kleinmanProvenance: consigned by a member of Bazooka Joe, see prev lots for other posters from similar period.
