His work is characterised by the use of different media, working both in painting and sculpture. Although it is in the latter field that, to a greater extent, characterises his artistic production. His works can be inscribed in a language of a figurative character that in a certain way tends towards abstraction, although he also shows clear aesthetic influences of cubism. He always depicts living, active, moving nature, animals or people, but never still lifes or landscapes.

Crawford writes a series of social letters, in part, 'Of course you haven't said anything out of line in your past few letters….And thank you for saying “It's not like you to ignore all the letters and cards I've sent you…” Sally, besides being out of town for two and a half months, besides working like the dickens, trying to get my TV show going, plugging “Johnny Guitar”, Easter vacation with four children (four of my own, two of Betty Grable's), with no nurse, then the children back into school, working again, trying to combat all the bad publicity coming out of a couple of people in Hollywood, doing my life story for Women's Home Companion, trying to run the house with mediocre and meagre help, working until four and five and six very often in the morning to get my letters done…..Now do you understand?.....Please try and understand how everything just piled up all of a sudden…..I leave a week from Thursday for Texas to ballyhoo “Johnny Guitar”….it will be a long, tedious, grind, but if it's helpful to Mr. Yates who has been very good to me than that's all that's necessary' (18th May 1954), 'I am so happy that you enjoyed meeting Betty Barker while you were in Los Angeles.
