ENGLISH SCHOOL, 19TH CENTURY MARGARET LEVETT-PRINSEP, NEE MONRO (D 1837) with tightly curled brown hair, standing three quarter length in a pink dress beside a guitar and music, before drapery, bears inscription in an old hand and dated 1826 verso, ivory, 11.5 x 9cm, papier mâché frame with giltmetal grapes hanger The sitter was the daughter of David Monro, a wealthy Scottish businessman who made a fortune in Canada before retiring to Bath. She was the first wife of Thomas Levett-Prinsep (d 1849) of Wychnor Park, Staffordshire and subsequently Croxall Hall, Derbyshire, whom she married in 1831. Finger shaped stain lower centre, some slight white powdering on the surface. On the backing the miniature bears the old inscription "by Freeman 1826" in pencil
