(www.eazl.co.uk)Noddy Holder's painting marks the 50th Anniversary of Slade's biggest-selling single, Merry Xmas Everybody, and perfectly captures the spirit of the song. Written by Noddy and Jim Lea, Slade's bassist, it was originally released on 7th November 1973 and was the Christmas No.1 that year, selling over a million copies. It has been re-released in every decade since then, re-entering the UK Top 20 six times and was certified double Platinum by the BPI in December 2021. Frequently cited as one of the UK's favourite Christmas songs, it is used annually by TV and radio broadcasters to herald the approach of the festive season.Noddy Holder was born in 1946 and, by the age of seven, was performing on stage. He left school at sixteen to become a professional musician and, in 1966, joined forces with the band that would become Slade. Throughout the 1970s, Noddy's rock vocals were the trademark of the UK's biggest-selling singles band, including six No.1 hits, and he co-composed almost all of Slade's songs. The band released over twenty albums and enjoyed international success.Leaving Slade after twenty-five years, Noddy went on to host his own syndicated radio shows for seventeen years, as well as working extensively on TV. He continues to work today across TV, radio, advertising and on stage and has had two books published. Among the many honours he has received over the years, he was made a Freeman of his home town, Walsall in the West Midlands, and was awarded the MBE in 2000 for his services to show business. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Elvis Presley: An Acetate Recording Of That's All Right,1954, a single-sided 10in, 45rpm disc, Memphis Recording Service label with typewritten details and misspelling, That's All Right Elvis Pressley with Scotty and Bill, also stamped W.H.B.Q. Memphis, the blank reverse etched WHBQ 10-3-55 (illegible) out no good, in later sleeve, with letter signed by Johnny Earle on JEMusic headed paper, undated, 10in x 10in (25.5cm x 25.5cm)Footnotes:This important acetate contains Elvis Presley's version of blues singer Arthur Crudup's composition from the late 1940s and was Elvis' debut single release. It was recorded on 5th July 1954, during Elvis' fifth visit to Sam Phillips' Sun Studio in Memphis. Previously, Phillips had heard nothing by Elvis that had caught his attention but on this occasion, in a break in recording with Scotty Moore on electric guitar and Bill Black on string bass, Elvis began singing an improvised, up-tempo version of Crudup's That's All Right, Mama with his acoustic guitar and Phillips thought he was hearing something special. They recorded it 'live', with all parts performed together and put down on one track, with no drums or additional instruments. Phillips then gave acetate copies to several local disc jockeys, including WHBQ's Dewey Phillips. Two days after the recording, Dewey played the acetate on his show and was met with such a reaction that he apparently played it more than a dozen times and received more than forty phone calls from listeners. It was officially released on 19th July and sold in the region of 20,000 copies, reaching No.4 in the local Memphis chart. Whether or not this can be regarded as the first rock 'n' roll record is arguable, but it is certainly the one that launched Elvis Presley's career, bringing him to a national, then global audience, and eventually earning him the title 'The King Of Rock 'n' Roll'.Provenance:Ex-lot 229, Bonhams Chelsea, High Art, Rock & Pop, 5th August 1998.Ex-lot 59, Whyte's, Irish Art & Collectibles, 24th March 2013.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
