* STEVEN CAMPBELL (SCOTTISH 1953 - 2007),UNTITLED oil on paper laid on linenoverall size 207cm × 157cm Unframed. Provenance: The Artist | Franklin Group, New York | Private Collection. Possibly from the Lytton Strachey Group of paintings, Circa 1985.Note: Steven Campbell was born in Glasgow and originally worked as a maintenance engineer in a steelworks in Cambulsang before attending Glasgow School of Art and becoming one of the leading Scottish figurative painters of his generation. Campbell worked alongside the artists Ken Currie, Peter Howson and Adrian Wiszniewski, a group which later became known as the 'New Glasgow Boys'. While their artistic output was not homogenous they all shared an interest in figurative painting during the early 1980s which broke away from the conceptual and minimal trends in Modern art at the turn of the twentieth century. After graduating from Glasgow School of Art in 1982 Campbell won a Fulbright Scholarship to study at the Pratt Institute in the United States. Campbell worked from a studio in Brooklyn until 1986 and this period was key in establishing his status as an internationally renowned artist whilst raising awareness of Scottish contemporary art on a global scale. "Young Camper Discovering Grotto in The Ground" is a major work representative of this period. It appeared in a solo show held at the Barbara Toll Gallery in 1983. Within days of the show, the doyen of the New York art critics, John Russell, fully endorsed the painterly qualities of a young, unknown Scottish artist in his New York Times review. From here it was purchased by significant US contemporary art collectors, Boake and Marian Sells. Campbell had further solo exhibitions across the world in locations as far-reaching as Galerie Pierre Huiber in Geneva (1986) and Marlborough Fine Art in Tokyo (1990). His work is influenced by a diverse range of literary fiction from tales by the author P.G. Wodehouse to murder mysteries, resulting in his artworks appearing to be humorous and unsettling. Campbell was also influenced by children's book illustrations accounting for his use of a rich and vibrant palette which intensified after his U.S. period. Campbell's surreal compositions cannot be read as a conventional fictional narrative and his imaginary worlds intentionally challenge the viewer with their dreamlike quality leaving his artwork open to multiple interpretations. Note 2: The current work is so far untitled and was painted during the artist's time painting in the USA. During this period Campbell exhibited with Barbara Toll Fine Arts, New York and Asher Faure Gallery, Los Angeles. However, the current painting was purchased directly from the artist by the Franklin Group a large media corporation based in the USA.

Iain Macnab had been Principal at Heatherley's Art School (1925 - 1940) and then went on to be founding Principal of the hugely influential Grosvenor School of Modern Art. Sheila's London influences and Glasgow School foundations evolved into a distinctive and individual style. She usually worked "en plein air" and her work is semi abstract. She focused mainly on landscape where her training as a geographer, allowed her to use her understanding of land formation, the delicate balance of the seasons and the interaction between Man and the environment. Her uncle's concept of "rhythm" is evident in Sheila's work and remained a constant throughout her career. She painted in Scotland, Spain. France and Italy and exhibited widely especially in Glasgow, Edinburgh, London and Newcastle. Her work appeared frequently at the Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Glasgow Institute, Paisley Art Institute annual exhibitions and at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (London). She won numerous awards and prizes over a long and distinguished career. Recent examples of Sheila Macmillan's paintings in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auctions have included prices of £1700, £1400, £1100, £900, £850 & £800 (all hammer prices) which well illustrates the depth of collector interest in Sheila Macmillan's work.

* WILLIAM BIRNIE RSW RGI (SCOTTISH 1929 - 2006),WINTER LANDSCAPE, KILBARCHANoil on board, signed and dated '79, titled label versoimage size 58cm x 78cm, overall size 69cm x 89cm Framed. Handwritten artist's label verso.Note: Bill Birnie studied at Glasgow School of Art under Gilbert Spencer and then at Hospitalfield under Ian Fleming. After graduating, he joined the staff at Hyndland Secondary School in 1952. That same year he was also elected a member of the Society of Scottish Artists (SSA). In 1958, he became a founder member of the Glasgow Group and formed the Glasgow Group Society, of which he was Vice-President for 32 years. In 1965, he was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW), a society of which he also became Vice-President and Treasurer. He became Principal Art Teacher at Douglas Academy, near Bearsden, and later at Gryffe High, near Kilbarchan. Bill's abilities not only as a teacher but also as an administrator were noticed by the Department of Education and he was soon appointed Head Examiner in Art for Scotland. He still managed to maintain a very active exhibiting schedule and showed in all the main public galleries and many of Scotland's best commercial galleries. His work was enthusiastically collected and increasingly sought after. He was elected a member of the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art (RGI) and of the Paisley Art Institute (PAI). In the early years, he painted from his garden, showing the village of Kilbarchan in its changing seasons, under a quiet blanket of winter snow, or framed in a blazing sunset through autumnal trees. Later visits to France and Italy with his artist wife, Cynthia Wall, whom he married in 1953, brought new subject matter, cafe scenes, vine groves, Italian clifftop villages, and the crumbling facades of palaces and churches of Venice. It was characteristic of the man that when told that his illness was terminal, he calmly put his affairs in order and started work for a final one-man show at the Open Eye Gallery (Edinburgh) the scene of so many of his successful shows. Unsurprisingly, the exhibition was a complete sell-out. In recent years there has been a widely acknowledged acceleration in the prices achieved at auctions around the UK for William Birnie's paintings. In the Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 8th November 2020 lot 567 "The Red House" (Kilbarchan) a 60 x 90cm oil sold for £3000 (hammer) which, not for the first time in recent years, set a new auction record for a painting by William Birnie.

* PAM CARTER DA PAI (SCOTTISH 1952 - 2022),GULLS, KILORAN BAY (Isle of Colonsay)oil on canvas, signed, titled versoimage size 50cm x 60cm, overall size 69cm x 79cm Framed and under glass. Note 1: It was with great sadness that we learnt of the passing of Pam Carter in May after an illness which she wrote about to her database of buyers on 24th June 2021: "I feel at last I am retiring somewhat due to ill health. I am not painting very much these days as I am struggling with the daily regime of chemo tablets; it’s hard getting the balance of effective medication and quality of life".Note 2: Pam Carter was born in Tanganyika, East Africa to an Austrian mother and Scottish father. At the age of thirteen, she came to Scotland where she schooled at Bearsden Academy. She graduated from Glasgow School of Art in the seventies. "My main inspiration as an artist is in the Scottish landscape and seascape. I enjoy using colour to define contours, structure and changing light sequences. I search out specific viewpoints. I am equally inspired by the rugged isolation of the Western Isles and the dramatic viewpoints of the Eastern coastline. I work predominantly in oil". Pam Carter was unquestionably one of Scotland's most popular and successful contemporary artists. She won numerous awards and prizes, always received significant media attention, has been the subject of many magazine features and had several tv appearances. Her work is widely exhibited but rarely appears at auction. However, in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 17th April 2022 lot 38 "Luskentyre Reflections" a 46 x 51cm oil by Pam Carter sold for £2000 (hammer) and in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 10th July 2022 lot 230 "Gables Geary" sold for £2600 (hammer).Comment: Pam was a special artist and one who enjoyed wide popularity and substantial commercial success. In all our dealings with Pam over the years, she was always generous with her time and quick to provide the background to paintings we had received from private consignors and filling in gaps about locations, dates etc. Pam's work is instantly recognisable and she had that rare gift, even among the best artists, of being able to use the minimum of brushwork to create the maximum visual effect. Her "lines" were those of the natural environment but she knew exactly how to "see" them and portray them on canvas. Despite her commercial success, or perhaps even because of it, Pam's work probably hasn't yet reached the full audience that it so richly deserves. She exhibited frequently at numerous galleries in Scotland and gallery owners were inevitably in a queue to secure her work. Typically, Pam showed loyalty to those who were the first to support her when she was a relative unknown. Talented artists always wish to be remembered by their work and Pam Carter can be certain of that, but she'll also be remembered with great affection by all those who had the good fortune to meet her or know her.

* CHRIS BUSHE RSW (SCOTTISH b. 1958),KASTROoil on board, signed, titled and dated 2001 versoimage size 39cm x 39cm, overall size 69cm x 68cm Mounted, framed and under glass.Note: Born in Perthshire, Chris Bushe is one of Scotland’s greatest living landscape painters. Initially, he studied Archaeology and Ancient History at Edinburgh but from his earliest years, he has responded to his fascination with the landscape around rural Aberdeenshire. He was accepted at Gray’s School of Art in the 1980s and forged a career painting landscapes very much in his own style and at odds with the fashionable conceptualism of the day. His paintings have won him a plethora of awards at national exhibitions. His work can be found in the corporate collections of Murray International Metals, Premier Property Group, Aberdeen Hospitals Trust, Grampian Regional Council, Edinburgh Hospitals Trust, Scottish Life, the Royal Bank of Scotland, Scottish & Newcastle, Dundee City Council, Bulthaup, University of Stirling, Turnberry Hotel and Centrica. His many awards include the Morton Fraser Milligan, Russell Flint Trust, Glasgow Arts Club Fellowship, Scottish Arts Club Awards, the RSW Council Award, the RSW McManus Galleries Purchase Prize, the RSW Fotheringham Gallery Award and the RSW The Walter Scott Award. Most recently, Chris has had considerable success at The Discerning Eye winning both the Founder’s £2500 Purchase Prize in 2015 and ING £5,000 Purchase Prize in 2016. In Scotland, his principal gallery is the prestigious Open Eye Gallery (Edinburgh) where his most recent (widely praised) solo show was "Chasing Light" (4th - 25th June 2022). In The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 10th July 2022 lot 1, "The Blue Door" by Chris Bushe sold for £850 (hammer). Kastro village is a lovely cliff-top village situated at 5 kilometres east of Apollonia. It offers a magnificent panoramic view of the sea and has been inhabited since the prehistoric period, as testify the many findings coming from the various archaeological excavations. Kastro has been built in the ruins of the ancient capital of Sifnos and is the only village on the island with a strong medieval character. A big part of the boundary walls survive as well as the features of a Venetian fortress. Narrow little streets, old entrances called the lozies, beautiful two-storey houses, superb old mansions and 16th and 17th-century churches with ornamental floors compose the incredible beauty of Kastro.

* LILIAN NEILSON (BRITISH 1938 - 1998),RED BOAToil on boardimage size 61cm x 69cm, overall size 81cm x 89cm Framed.Note: Lil Neilson was a member of the quartet who became known as 'The Catterline School' along with Joan Eardley, Annette Stephen and Angus Neil. Lil Neilson studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art from 1956-60, including a summer school at Hospitalfield House, Arbroath. She completed a post-diploma year tutored by Hugh Crawford and Alberto Morroco in 1960-61 and was awarded a travelling scholarship to France and Italy in 1961-62. On her return she joined Joan Eardley in Catterline: they had become friends in 1960 at Hospitalfield House and Eardley invited Lil to paint in the studio she and Annette Stephen shared in Catterline. Like many other painters and visitors, Lil became enthralled with the place. At this time Lil also worked backstage with Reet Guenigault in theatres including the Traverse in Edinburgh and also in England, returning to Catterline to nurse Eardley when her illness was diagnosed in the new year of 1963. Reet joined them three months later to take over and give Lil a rest, and after Eardley's death in August of that year, Lil bought No 2 South Side, Catterline, to make her home in one half and studio at the other end. Some pictures of this period show Catterline views which Eardley famously painted, especially with the great round moons low in the summer sky. Neilson's foregrounds are less detailed and the viewer's eyes are led upwards towards the sky. Lil continued to work in theatres until 1969, when she returned to Catterline to try to work through the Eardley influences which had been made more than a bitter cup. She felt that she must paint that problem out in Catterline. She spent some time in Norfolk with Gaydon Phillips, but not many paintings of Norfolk exist and she returned to paint in Catterline regularly over the next nine years. She moved permanently to Catterline in 1986 and, once there, Joyce Laing's Pittenweem gallery exhibited some of Lil's work which showed new directions. In 1989, at the influential 369 Gallery, Edinburgh, an exhibition shared with Annette Stephen showed a two-room retrospective of Lil's work. Her last show was 'Certain Days and Other Seasons' (1997) at both Seagate and Aberdeen Art Galleries. Lil pronounced this to be ''the end of my life's work'', prophetically as it turned out, for by August 1997 it became apparent that this private and reticent woman had been working under duress for the past two years as the extent of her disease was discovered. Lil's good friends and neighbours loved and nursed her, enabling her to be in her beloved Catterline until she needed the services of Roxburgh House. Lil Neilson's paintings rarely appear at auction and those which have in recent years have often been small studies and sketches which perhaps explains why her UK auction record price remained the £4600 (hammer) for "Catterline" achieved for lot 1744 in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction on 15.12.2013. However, in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 17th April 2022, "A Beached Boat" by Neilson ( a 43 x 92cm oil) sold for £5000 (hammer) - a new auction record for the artist. "Red Boat" has been consigned by a Scottish collector living in London who acquired the painting from Gallery Heinzel (Aberdeen) in 2011. "Red Boat" is slightly larger than "A Beached Boat" and it's a truly exceptional example of Neilson at her very best. Condition is good overall.

* PETER GRAHAM ROI (SCOTTISH b. 1959),EVENING LIGHTSoil on paper, signedimage size 24cm x 37cm, overall size 37cm x 51cm Framed and under glass.Note: Peter Graham was born in Glasgow in 1959. He attended the Glasgow School of Art, graduating in 1980. In 2000 Peter was elected to Full Membership of The Royal Institute of Oil Painters, R.O.I. Peter has earned a reputation as one of Britain’s most gifted and distinctive Modern Colourists. His work is often related to the Modern Scottish School but Peter has a flamboyant style which is unique, – detailed brushwork combined with loose fluid strokes creating vibrant contrasts of pure colour, line and tone. In the winter months within his studio, he delves deeply into the still life genre, creating some of his most stunning compositions, always with colour as the dominant theme but reflecting the heightened sense of atmosphere and passion that comes directly from painting in the beauty of the Mediterranean. Recently, hugely successful exhibitions in London have allowed Peter to take on extra studio space and his work is being enthusiastically exhibited by many of the UK's most prestigious galleries. Peter Graham's paintings do not appear at auction frequently but Impressive recent auction prices include (a slightly larger example) "Decorations with Flowers" which was sold at McTear's in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction for £2800 (lot 580, 26th May 2019).

* PAM CARTER DA PAI (SCOTTISH 1952 - 2022),HARBOUR LIGHTHOUSEgouache on paper, signed and dated '83, inscribed 'Porth Tywyn', titled label versoimage size 32cm x 41cm, overall size 46cm x 54cm Mounted, framed and under glass.Exhibition label verso: February '85, The Torrance Gallery, Edinburgh (a rare early work by Pam Carter).Note 1: It was with great sadness that we learnt of the passing of Pam Carter in May after an illness which she wrote about to her database of buyers on 24th June 2021: "I feel at last I am retiring somewhat due to ill health.
