Louis Le Brocquy HRHA (1916-2012)DelacroixWatercolour, 60 x 44cm (23½ x 17¼'')Signed, inscribed 'For Anne in admiration and friendship' and dated 10th November 1981Provenance: A gift from the artist to Anne Crookshank, 10/11/1981 and thence by family descent.Louis le Brocquy’s (1916 - 2012) many series of portraits of celebrities both historic and contemporary were widely known and admired during his lifetime. However his small group of watercolour sketches of the 19th century French artist Eugene Delacroix are little known and rarely reproduced. Yet, they have a significance far beyond their recognisability because it was to the Delacroix Autoportrait dit au gilet vert in the Louvre in Paris, that le Brocquy owed his own ventures into self-portraiture.In Louis le Brocquy, Portrait Heads, A Celebration of the Artist's Ninetieth Birthday, (catalogue of the exhibition of the same name at the NGI in 2007), le Brocquy is quoted as saying that he resisted pressure to paint his own face from his wife, the painter Anne Madden and others, ‘because my interest was always in painting the other, ….my immediate stimulus happened to be a couple of studies in watercolour I made from Delacroix’s curiously moving self-portrait in the Louvre’. Despite this remark however, le Brocquy is also cited in the same publication, as saying that, ‘An artist tends to paint his self-portrait all the time, since even with a subject before him - what he tries to draw up from the depths of the paper or the canvas, lies really somewhere in his own head.’ That suggests that even though this watercolour sketch of Delacroix is a telling likeness of the great French Romantic as known from many portraits and photographs of him, there is an element of the self-portrait here too. It is of interest that le Brocquy did not attempt a series in oils of Delacroix but shifted his focus, instead, to his own face. This watercolour sketch of Delacroix comes from the collection of Anne Crookshank, the inaugural Head of the History of Art department in Trinity College who died late last year. Anne Crookshank had been a friend of the artist’s since the 1950s when she bought his work, and the work of other emerging contemporary artists, notably William Scott, for the collection at the Ulster Museum in Belfast. An inscription by the artist , dedicates the Delacroix portrait to her ‘in admiration and love’. Elsewhere le Brocquy recorded his great regard for her achievements in Ulster and her unfailing support for living artists through her work for the Rosc exhibitions and her teaching. The painting of Delacroix, connected as it is to an important development in le Brocquy’s own career, was a fitting gift to the country’s leading art historian and a friend whom le Brocquy thought of as ‘a great Irishwoman’. Paul Henry RHA (1877-1958)A Connemara Cottage 1925-30Oil on board, 35.5 x 40.5cm (14 x 16)Signed. Inscribed with title versoProvenance: Originally acquired directly from the artist in February 1931 by a contemporary of Paul Henry’s at Methodist College, Belfast and thence by descent to the present ownerLiterature: S. B. Kennedy, Paul Henry: with a catalogue of the Paintings, Drawings, Illustrations, Yale University Press, Newhaven & London, 2007, catalogue number 640, p. 229, reproducedExhibited: Four Irish Artists: J. Humbert Craig, Paul Henry, E. L. Lawrenson, J. Crampton Walker, Fine Art Society, Bond Street, London, November 1930, catalogue number 14The original owner of this picture was a contemporary of Paul Henry at Methodist College, Belfast. A label on the reverse reads: ‘18. A CONNEMARA COTTAGE’, written in the artist’s hand. There is another label of James Bourlet on the reverse with the inscription ‘No. A47155’.There is moderate impasto, briskly executed. The Blue Lake (771, Kennedy, 2007), writing of the latter picture-which is virtually identical in composition to this one-Henry enclosed a photograph of the picture. On the back of the photograph he noted: ‘This is a very good thing and a favourite of mine but you can judge better than I of what you want. The photograph I regret to say does not give much idea of the colour which is warm and rich’. This painting dates from shortly after Henry left Achill Island to settle with his second wife, Mabel Young, at Carigoona Cottage in County Wicklow. After the trauma of leaving Achill, this was a very happy time for Henry, who often toured to the West in these years and made sketches for future paintings, ‘little notes’, as he called them. While it is a fine picture, it is not possible to identify the setting.Dr SB Kennedy, August 2017

(12 x 16 7/8 in), sheets approx. 400 x 570 mm. (15 3/4 x 22 1/2 in), some minor spotting and browning, mainly to margins, published by the artist, [circa 1787-1788], [bound with] Cook (Capt. James) [Atlas to accompany Captain James Cook's account of his voyages to the Pacific Ocean in the years 1776-1780], including two maps and 58 plates (of 61), without title and lacking plate nos. 27-29, without text leaves, engravings, on various laid papers, each sheet approx. 400 x 570 mm. (15 3/4 x 22 1/2 in), the front and back flyleaf watermarked 'J. Whatman 1821', occasional spotting and browning, some minor loss to margins in corners, bound in contemporary half-calf, spine gilt lettered, elephant folio, [circa 1784-1821]. Literature: [the four views] Joppien, Rüdiger and Smith, Bernard 'The Art of Captain Cook's Voyages', Yale, 1988, see nos. 3.44b; 3.157b; 3.120c; 3.397c ⁂ A very scarce set of Webber's "unpublished" aquatint views. Presumably bound together by an early collector, the four views in the present volume were Webber's first foray into the aquatint process and were separate from his later publication, Views in the South Seas. Only one of the four plates appears in this later publication, A View in Pulo Condore, but notably the buffalo driver is positioned differently, the lettering has changed, and it is printed in colour rather than monochrome; the variant states suggests that the present group of four are from an earlier printing, before the plate was re-worked, and before it appeared in Boydell's publication circa 1808-1820. Joppien and Smith record 3 or 4 other known impressions of these plates, with all but one or two in public collections (see The British Museum; Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington; National Library of Australia), and at the time of publication they wrote of two of the plates: "The subject was not included in the later series of Webber's 'Views'. No other versions are known to exist." [Joppien, op. cit., nos. 3.120c and 3.157b]

* SAM MACDONALD, BONELESS pewter, gold leaf and beaten copper, signed and titled verso 102cm x 82cm Unframed, as intended. Note:Sam grew up on the Isle of Lewis and, after 4 years at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts training in Silversmithing and Metalwork, lived on Orkney for 19 years. This enabled his love of fishing, diving and the sea to combine with his developing skills in metalwork. Sam uses old, traditional metal work techniques to produce contemporary and unique works. He creates impressions of fish, using the tactile effects that metal, its processes and techniques have to offer. Travelling internationally to fly fish has opened up new inspiration for Sam. Fishing in Venezuela, the Bahamas, and the Dominican Republic for bonefish, permit, tarpon and barracuda have been the source of inspiration for many recent pieces. As has salmon and trout fishing in Iceland and Pakistan. Sam is a Signature Member of The Society of Animal Artists USA and a member of the Redspot Artist Group. He has been featured on BBC 2's 'Coast' programme and has featured in Wildlife Art Journal and X-ray International Diving Magazine. FEMALE POWERby Fatima Pantoja1450 mm long x 920 mm high x 700 mm deep, 36 kg This colourful BookBench depicts Jane Austen working at her desk with a scroll of never-ending paper and colours that reflect her strength and the vibrancy of her ideas. Fatima PantojaFatima is a Spanish artist who moved to the UK to learn English six years ago, and currently works as a freelance artist and art teacher. Her artwork style and techniques change all the time, and she tries to push her own boundaries while avoiding being classified. As an artist Fatima wants to be able to make people see the beauty and wonder of every day apparent routine, to enjoy the colours, the light and brush strokes. Although Fatima knew Jane Austen's work she finds it hard to believe that Jane is not a contemporary as she writes in such a strong and independent manner. Her design puts Jane working in her studio, with never ending paper, and the landscape with fountain pen tree talk about her ability to create manuscripts. The colours reflect her strength and the vibrancy of her ideas clashing with the epoque's archetypes. The plants, some of them cactus blooms, represent her sharp and concise personality.

An 18ct gold necklace by contemporary jeweller Paul Preston, composed of spectacle set discs of yellow or white gold, varying sizes and of rough textured finish, joined by short lengths of small circular links with a larger central link and suspending from the front the largest disc, to an 'S' hook clasp; Birmingham hallmarks 1976 and with maker's 'PP' stamp, four further discs with crown and 750 punches, and another with a double chevron in a cushion outline assumed to be an early signature; length 64cm, weight 16.76g Paul Preston was born in 1943, trained as an architect (double first from Oxford Poly, now Oxford Brooks), but soon abandoned that career; and while supporting himself by diving for crayfish and scrap from wrecks off the Cornish coast, became a self-taught craftsman jeweller. He lived with his family in a former nudist camp in Pembrokeshire, and with the alter ego of the Red Mole, created jewellery in precious metals, sometimes alloys of his own invention, and gemstones: one-off, detailed and sometimes emotive pieces inspired by the natural world, the art of Breon O'Casey and craftsmanship of Bernard Leech. He stopped work in 1997 for some years, suffering from clinical depression, but has taken up his unique creative baton again in the last few years; he has exhibited at galleries at home and abroad and his jewellery is in the permanent collection of the V&A (a gold and ruby brooch dated 2007 depicting 'A Charm of Goldfinches'), and his work is currently available in a number of commercial art galleries from Edinburgh to St Ives in Cornwall, including Primavera in Cambridge.
