KAWS (American, b. 1974) Chum 20th Anniversary in pink, 2022 Painted cast vinyl Presented in original packaging Measures approx. 29.5 x 19.6 cm KAWS (American, b.1974) is a notable limited-edition toy and clothing designer. He was born in Jersey City, NJ, as Brian Donnelly. Growing up in New Jersey, KAWS first became interested in graffiti in elementary school, where he spent a good deal of time copying graffiti images onto paper. His first influences were neighbourhood children, who painted graffiti images on walls within his community. As he grew older, his influences came from traditional life painters, such as Gerhard Richter (German, b.1932), Klaus Oldenberg (Swedish, b.1929), and Chuck Close (American, b.1940). KAWS’s career began as a graffiti artist in New York, NY, in the early 1990s. His images were seen on billboards, bus stops, and in phone booths. He obtained his BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York. Immediately after graduation in 1996, KAWS began working as a freelance artist for Disney, creating animated backgrounds. Some of his most popular works include his contributions to 101 Dalmations, Daria, and Doug. Once KAWS began to gain popularity, his graffiti advertisements became highly sought after. He traveled extensively to work in Paris, London, Germany, and Japan. In 1998, he received the Pernod Liquid Art Award, which offers a grant to new artists. In late 1990s, KAWS began to design and produce limited-edition toys. These gained international popularity, especially in Japan. He also began to collaborate on several different toys, including with Nigo (Japanese, b.1970) for A Bathing Ape. Some of KAWS’s other popular collaborative works include his redesign of Mickey Mouse, The Michelin Man, and SpongeBob SquarePants. The artist’s solo exhibitions have been held at The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Ridgefield, CT, the Harris Museum in Preston, UK, the Parco Gallery in Tokyo, Japan, and the City Gallery Chastain in Atlanta, GA. His solo exhibition, OriginalFake at the Bape Gallery in Tokyo, Japan, featured a sculpture entitled Wonderful World, which sold for US$400,000. KAWS’s traveling exhibition, Beautiful Losers, toured throughout Europe and the United States and included a showing at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, GA. Jamie Reid (British, 1947-2023) "Fuck Your Putin Wars" - 2022 Inkjet on Somerset Velvet paper 255gsm Limited edition no 62/100  Signed by artist in pencil Presented rolled in original tube Full sheet measures approx. 57cm x 40cm (22.5" x 15.75") Jamie Reid (British, 1947-2023) grew up in a very politically active family and his powerful art prints explore issues such as nuclear weapons, racism and the criminal justice system. Reid is probably best known for his work with The Sex Pistols. Reid studied at Croydon Art School, where he met Malcom McLaren, the future manager of the Sex Pistols. Reid’s décollage album and single covers for the band played a major role in defining the British punk movement’s aesthetic. Reid produced scandalous and famous works by defacing elements of pop culture and nationalist imagery, such as Cecil Beaton’s Silver Jubilee portrait of the Queen. As the editor of the seminal anarchist publication Suburban Press during the 1970s, Reid created mosaics by combining drawings, stickers, banners and posters, articulating contemporary issues and illustrating his message in a provocative way. He has participated in anti-war art exhibitions and campaigned on issues including poll tax, Clause 28 and the Criminal Justice Bill. Reid remains politically active today, producing works for zines and other media, and is currently represented by John Marchant Gallery in London. Reid’s art has been collected by Vivienne Westwood, Madonna and Angelina Jolie and can be found in The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Tate Gallery in London, among others. If postage is required, any print within this sale will be posted rolled unless informed otherwise.

- Albumseiten stellenweise stockfleckig, Fotografien in ausgezeichneten kontrastreichen Abzügen. He founded his first studio in Montreal in 1856. His personal and professional interest in art led Notman to establish relations with Montreal's most prominent painters. Several of them, J. Web, H. Sandham, Otto Reinhold Jacobi, Charles Jones Way, and F. Danby, along with Cornelius Krieghoff, were represented in this album, with a great number of photographic reproductions of contemporary Canadian paintings, of which 10 with Canadian landscapes and hunting scenes. The "Ars moriendi" (The Art of Dying) are texts that were written between 1415 and 1450 and offer advice on how to die with dignity. These texts explain how to find a good death according to Christian principles. They were written against the historical backdrop of the devastating effects of the plague, the Black Death. Death was visualised through dances of death, dance scenes or musical depictions of skeletons on church or cemetery walls. The basic intention of this approach to the subject of death is the certainty of dying with complete trust in divine guidance. In doing so, one endeavours to free oneself from all worldly shackles and in this way be prepared for the inevitable end. - Minimally browned. Last few pages with dampstaining, insect damage to outer margins. Historically valuable copy with important provenance and handwritten dedication by the author.

An old receipt from Bruno Cooper, Norwich, dated 4 December 2010, and describing the piece as a terracotta painted ox with basis, Mohenjo-daro civilization, 2nd millennium BC, accompanies this lot.Weight: 510.6 gDimensions: Height 14.6 cmThe Indus Valley Civilization was a Bronze Age culture in the northwestern regions of South Asia, lasting from 3300 BCE to 1300 BCE, and in its mature form from 2600 BCE to 1900 BCE. Together with ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, it was one of three early civilizations of the Near East and South Asia, and of the three, the most widespread. Its sites spanned an area from northeast Afghanistan and much of Pakistan to western and northwestern India. The civilization flourished both in the alluvial plain of the Indus River, which flows through the length of Pakistan and along a system of perennial monsoon-fed rivers that once coursed in the vicinity of the Ghaggar-Hakra, a seasonal river in northwest India and eastern Pakistan. The cities of the ancient Indus were noted for their urban planning, baked brick houses, elaborate drainage systems, water supply systems, clusters of large non-residential buildings, and techniques of handicraft and metallurgy. Both Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa likely grew to a size of 30,000 and 60,000 individuals, and the civilization may have contained between one and five million total population during its florescence. It is also known as the Harappan civilization, after its type site Harappa, the first to be excavated early in the 20th century in what was then the Punjab province of British India and is now Punjab, Pakistan. The discovery of Harappa and soon afterwards Mohenjo-Daro was the culmination of work that had begun after the founding of the Archaeological Survey of India in the British Raj in 1861. There were earlier and later cultures called Early Harappan and Late Harappan in the same area. The early Harappan cultures were populated by Neolithic civilizations, the earliest and best-known of which is Mehrgarh in Balochistan, Pakistan. Harappan civilization is sometimes called Mature Harappan to distinguish it from the earlier cultures.Terracotta figures such as the present lot have been unearthed at Mohenjo-daro and Harappa, suggesting a commonality of style and purpose throughout the Indus Valley during the mature Harappan period (ca. 2600-1900 BC). In one excavated example from Chanu-daro a hole was poked in the belly, indicating that it would have been attached to a stick for use as a puppet or a small standard of the kind carried in the processions depicted on some seals. In others, the hole was indeed placed on the back of the animal, thus suggesting an alternative function, perhaps as part of a larger ensemble.Zebu cattle are thought to be derived from the Indian bos primigenius namadicus, a subspecies of the aurochs. Wild Asian aurochs disappeared during the time of the Indus Valley Civilization from their range in the Indus River basin and other parts of the South Asian region possibly due to interbreeding with domestic zebu and the resultant fragmentation of wild populations due to loss of habitat. Believed to have first been bred in northwestern South Asia, between 7000 and 6000 BC, they are understood to have been dispersed by 4000 BC and spread across much of South Asia by 2000 BC.Literature comparison: Compare a related painted terracotta figure of a unicorn, also dated ca. 2600-1900 BC, illustrated by Jonathan Mark Kenoyer, Cities of the Indus Valley, in Joan Aruz (ed.), Art of the First Cities: The Third Millennium B.C. from the Mediterranean to the Indus, 2003, no. 276, p. 390. Compare a related serpentine figure of a bull, 14.7 cm long, also dated ca. 2600-1900 BC, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 1986.280. Though it may be called the "Oxus civilization", apparently centered on the upper Amu Darya (Oxus River) in Bactria, most of the BMAC's urban sites are actually located in Margiana (modern Turkmenistan) on the Murghab river delta and the Kopet Dagh mountain range. There are a few later sites in northern Bactria (c. 1950-1450 BC), the territory of southern Uzbekistan, but they are mostly graveyards belonging to the BMAC-related Sapalli culture. A single BMAC site, known as Dashli, lies in southern Bactria, the territory of northern Afghanistan. Sites found further east, in southwestern Tajikistan, though contemporary with the main BMAC sites in Margiana, are only graveyards, with no urban developments associated with them. BMAC sites were discovered and named by the Soviet archaeologist Viktor Sarianidi when he was excavating in northern Afghanistan between 1969 and 1979. Sarianidi's excavations revealed numerous monumental structures in many sites, fortified by impressive walls and gates. Reports on the BMAC were mostly confined to Soviet journals. A journalist from The New York Times wrote in 2001 that during the years of the Soviet Union, the findings were largely unknown to the West until Sarianidi's work began to be translated in the 1990s.

His style can be characterized in the genre of landscape print, innovated by his early contemporary Hokusai (1760-1849). Hiroshige can be attributed to having created over 5,000 prints of everyday life and landscape in Edo-period Japan. Inspired by Katsushika Hokusai's popular Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, Hiroshige took a softer, less formal approach with his Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido (1833-1834), completed after a trip he made between Edo and Kyoto, which is acclaimed to be perhaps his finest achievement. He made numerous other journeys within Japan and issued a series of such prints, expressing in great detail the poetic sensibility inherent in the climate and topography of Japan and its people. Hiroshige's prolific output was somewhat due to his being paid very little per series. Still, this did not deter him, as he receded to Buddhist monkhood in 1856 to complete his brilliant and lasting One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (1856-58). He died in 1858, 10 years before Monet, Van Gogh, and a lot of Impressionist painters became eager collectors of Japanese art.Museum comparison:A closely related woodblock print is in the collection of the British Museum, museum number 1902,0212,0.397.13.

He died in 1858, 10 years before Monet, Van Gogh, and a lot of Impressionist painters became eager collectors of Japanese art.Museum comparison:A closely related woodblock print is in the collection of the British Museum, museum number 1969,0414,0.13.

The limited archaeological distribution and use of glass objects are evidence of the rarity of the material. Literary sources date the first manufacture of glass to the 5th century AD. However, the earliest archaeological evidence for glass manufacture in China comes from the Warring States period. The Chinese learned to manufacture glass comparatively later than the Mesopotamians, Egyptians and Indians. Imported glass objects first reached China during the late Spring and Autumn and early Warring States periods, c. early 5th century BC, in the form of polychrome 'eye beads'. These imports created the impetus for the production of indigenous glass beads. During the Han dynasty, the use of glass diversified. The introduction of glass casting in this period encouraged the production of molded objects, such as bi disks and other ritual objects. The cosmic egg is a mythological motif found in the cosmogonies of the Proto-Indo-European culture and several other major civilizations. Typically, the world egg is a beginning of some sort, and the universe or some primordial being comes into existence by 'hatching' from the egg, sometimes lain on the primordial waters of the Earth. Eggs symbolize the unification of two complementary principles (represented by the egg white and the yolk) from which life or existence, in its most fundamental philosophical sense, emerges.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Galerie Zacke, 9 March 2023, lot 146Price: EUR 2,860 Description: A translucent aquamarine glass 'cosmic egg', Han dynastyExpert remark: Compare the closely related form and size (9.5 cm).
