* DIANE RENDLE,MORNING IN STONETOWNoil on panel, signed73cm x 73cmFramed and under glassLabel verso: The Contemporary Fine Art Gallery, 31 High Street, Eton.Note: Born and raised in East Africa, Diane’s work is representative of diversity within culture, this combined with a love of travel and stories of explorers, creates work inspired by the vibrancy of foreign lands. Early in life, Diane was immersed in a highly patterned environment with richly coloured flora and fauna, providing a wealth of visual memories to inspire. Diane’s work creates a world that cannot be realised, but is representative of a story-telling process, combined with her own imagination and ability to create this world inside her studio near the Scottish Borders. The result is illustrative scenes delicately painted in acrylic with a gentle aesthetic, each one retelling atale, much as a traveller would have done. Diane Rendle was born and raised in East Africa. After graduating from Hornsey College of Art, London in 1981 with a degree in Graphic Design and Illustration she moved to Edinburgh to work for a design consultancy. Diane has had a number of solo exhibitions with the Open Eye Gallery and taken part in many group exhibitions in Scotland. She has work in private collections throughout the UK.

* MOIRA BEATY (SCOTTISH 1922 - 1915),DRESSINGoil on board, signed20cm x 24cm Mounted, framed and under glassNote: Moira went to Glasgow School of Art in 1939 where her contemporaries included Joan Eardley and Margot Sandeman. These three young women were regarded by their lecturers as the brightest stars of their generation. After one year as a student she was recruited to Bletchley Park where she worked as a code breaker, one of Churchill's 'corkscrew thinkers'. She returned to GSA in 1947 to complete her studies. Moira's enduring talent was recognised again in 2014 at the age of 92 with a sell out exhibition in Kirkcudbright. Moira Beaty was a resolute and determined woman who was an integral part of the famous group at Bletchley Park who did much to aid the Allies' victory in the Second World War. She worked in Hut 8 where Alan Turing and Peter Twinn set up the Naval Enigma Code. Beaty was responsible to Twinn - the first mathematician to be recruited to Bletchley. ''I discovered something,'' Beaty modestly remarked years later, ''a code within a code. I was immediately moved to within the codebreakers and became a cryptographer working on the German Secret Service codes.'' The Twinn team was involved in breaking the secretive Abwehr codes which were even more complicated than the ordinary military messages. The information this provided to the Allies in such major operations as the desert campaign, the D-Day landings and the sinking of the battleship Tirpitz proved vital to the war effort. Her first solo exhibition was at the Open Eye Gallery in Edinburgh in 1979 and at the Collins Gallery in Glasgow. Her works were also seen at the Cadogan Contemporary Gallery in London and around Dumfries - notably at the Gracefield Arts Centre. In 2001 Gracefield held a major retrospective exhibition of both Moira and Stuart Beaty's works, entitled Full Circle. In 2014 Beaty officially opened the Kirkcudbright Summer Art Exhibition: Glasgow Girls 1920 - 1960, and held a solo exhibition in the town's Harbour Cottage Gallery. Both exhibitions were hugely popular and, at 92, Moira Beaty was still making a strong impression and gaining new collectors.

Tiwi, Melbourne, 2012. 748 grams, 50cm (19 1/2"). Property of a European collector; formerly from the collection of Prof. RNDr. Jan Jelínek, DrSc., anthropologist, and Director of the Moravian museum, and the president of the International Committee of Museums (ICOM) for eight years; thence by descent 2004; collected by Professor Jelínek during the Moravian Museum expedition collaboration with Department of Aboriginal studies in Canberra, to Arhnem Land in the Northern Territory of Australia, in 1969; from Tiwi Island, Australia. Accompanied by copies of expedition photographs, map and Dr Jelinek's biography. The Tiwi Islands are eighty kilometres north of Darwin, where the Arafura and Timor Seas meet. They are comprised of Melville and Bathurst Islands and are Australia’s second and fifth largest islands respectively. Contemporary Tiwi artists draw on the elaborate decoration of traditional ceremonies, including painting patterns on the body, carving and decorating ceremonial hollow log funeral poles, the creation of elaborate head-dresses and other body adornments, weaving and printmaking borne from the tradition of ceremonial Pukamani poles. Tiwi art differs from that of the people of nearby Arnhem Land in its vibrant colour and emphasis on pattern. This figure represents an ancestor figure and these traditionally feature geometric patterns along with depictions of spirits and ancestors, and are placed around gravesites. Very fine condition.
