Terence John McCaw (South African 1913-1978) SPIER signed and dated 46; inscribed with the title on the reverse oil on canvas 53,5 by 69cm The work of Terence McCaw is enjoying a revival of interest. His large format landscapes and depictions of buildings and architecture are appreciated for their powerful and evocative portrayal of a serene world that we no longer know, yet value in retrospect. Iconic Cape heritage homesteads, exquisite arched views of Zanzibar and sun-drenched Mediterranean villages demonstrate his competence at rendering architectural landscapes that resonate with a contemporary audience. McCaw enjoyed an excellent training in art including a period at the Central School of Art in London in 1935, together with his contemporaries, Freida Lock and Gregoire Boonzaier. On returning to South Africa the three artists founded the New Group in 1937 to campaign for a fresh vision in the local art world that would embrace European movements and influences. His success at home culminated in an appointment as Official War artist during the Second World War from 1942-1945 in both North Africa and Italy. Completed at the high point of his career on return to Cape Town in 1946, this sensitive rendering of Spier betrays little of the turmoil and horror encountered up North. An atmosphere of calm and sombre solitude is emphasised by the artist’s use of grey, black and green tones. The unusual view of the side gables of the manor house in the famous Spier werf, is painted in the so called “impressionist” style of the New Group for which McCaw is best known. His work is represented in all major public collections in South Africa. - C. K. Berman, E. Art & Artists of South Africa, A.A. Balkema, Cape Town, 1974

Jacob Hendrik Pierneef (South African 1886-1957) KARROO (sic.) signed and dated 39; a plaque adhered to the frame bears the title and the inscription 'aan Mev. D J.J.G Loots van susters Pretoria Noord oil on board 29 by 39cm One of the most celebrated artists of his generation and one of the most sought after artists today, J. H. Pierneef is known as an authority on the splendour of South African landscapes through his stylised interpretations.Pierneef returned from a trip to Europe in 1925 – 1926 having gained experience with an array of contemporary styles, and influenced by the theories of Willem van Konijnenberg, from his book de Aesthetische Idee which was published in 1916. Konijnenberg writes that both idealbeauty and the harmony required in order to achieve it are derived from laws of mathematics. He stressed that unity in a painting is attained through the use of rhythm, and this influenced Pierneef’s production greatly. This use of structure in achieving form can be viewed in many of his paintings after this period in the strong linear style, geometric shapes and simplified lines.Prior to travelling to Europe Pierneef followed the Dutch Masters’ tradition of painting nature as he saw it. It took him many years to perfect the scientific formulae that were required to achieve a balanced composition, but evidence of these theories, which were incorporated to become Pierneef’s style, can be viewed in the painting Karroo. The work consists of diagonal lines that create the clouds and the geometrically shaped hills, with horizontal lines of the land in the foreground and the base of the clouds above it. The artist employs horizontal lines and geometric shapes to create a landscape of clouds and hills. Also typical of Pierneef’s style is an archway of clouds. A succession of short, blunt brushstrokes creates a strong sky that becomes darker as it extends towards the top of the composition. The soft pinks and delicate purples of the hills, as well as the use of blues, were used by the Romantic School, of which Pierneef was a follower. Another element characteristic of Romanticism is the burgeoning cloud formation, which emphasises a gentle turbulence ofthe elements. Pierneef’s technique varied in his use of oils, sometimes applied in thick layers, sometimes in thin layers. Karroo is evident of the latter, with its shallow layers of paint. The light colours used are typical of those found in the work produced in Pierneef’s mid to late career.Pierneef painted Karroo in 1939, three years after he was awarded the Medal of Honour for Painting by the South African Akademie. - S. John’s paintings transmit a positive, upbeat feeling to the viewer. For John, art is a visual language, an important means of communication. He creates each piece as a unique experience. “Art is for everyone.” www.nolanart.com. Interview with the artist: Why did you want to take part in this fundraising initiative After leaving my studio, art can play a much bigger role. I have donated my work to many charity auctions. It gives me a wonderful sense of contributing when my art creates money for a greater cause. Art can impact in many ways aside from hanging on a wall, it is astonishing to think that in some cases my art could save a life. Can you tell us about your artwork What inspiration did you draw on to create your design I celebrate colour in my abstract, contemporary and Pop Art styles. I chose Pop Art as the style for my 9 of Hearts Card as I wanted to simplify the image and increase the visual strength through colour.Art produces the happy hormone when it is viewed, so hopefully my piece will have the same effect. What is it about the charity Transplant Links that made you want to support themI always try to be involved in health care art related projects. The facts are established that art is hugely beneficial in therapeutic and health care recovery programmes. Transplant links is another way for me to contribute in this area. The volunteers in Transplant Links should be lauded, hopefully my creation will help in some small way, long may they continue. Please note that final invoices will include buyers' premium at 27% (inclusive of VAT) added to the hammer price. Ewbank's are waiving all vendor commission for the charity. Annie Boisseau RBA (b.1957). Ace of Spades. Acrylic on board. Framed. Annie Boisseau was born in London and studied Fine Art (painting) at Goldsmith’s College and Exeter College of Art and Design. Annie has exhibited widely both in London and the South of England. Annie has exhibited regularly with The Royal Society of British Artists, Mall Galleries, London. She was elected a member of the RBA in 2018. She received The Winsor & Newton Award for Painting at The Royal Society of British Artists 300th Exhibition (2017). Her work has been shown in many National exhibitions, such as, The Discerning Eye Exhibition and The Pastel Society at the Mall Galleries, and The RWS Contemporary Watercolour Competition, Bankside Gallery, London. Her work has also been included in many International Art Fairs, such as, The Olympia Art Fair, London and The 20/21 British Art Fair. More locally, she has shown at The Minster Gallery, Winchester, The Wey Gallery, Godalming and has had a solo show at The Lewis Elton Gallery, Surrey University. Annie has for many years taught art classes in Surrey, including the University of Surrey, where her work is held in the University’s prestigious art collection. I see my work as a contemporary interpretation of the tradition of Romantic landscape painting. It is inspired by an emotional response to the natural world, investigating the often transient qualities of time, space, memories or emotions with expressive semi-abstract painting. My painting process evolves through transforming and abstracting the subject. Layers of transparent paint are applied to the surface to create an atmospheric quality that suggest an unveiling or discovery of the poetic mystery of the landscape. www.annieboisseau.com. I was very happy to be involved in the last TLC Art Auction and to learn about the amazing work the charity does in developing kidney transplant services in countries where it is needed most. It's a great feeling to be a small part of something that makes such a big difference simply by donating an artwork!.When I heard that this year's Art Auction was going to be the theme of a Deck of cards, I thought ' brilliant ' , Christmas presents sorted!.I jumped in quite quickly with wanting to paint the Ace of spades. I didn't want to do something too obvious, so I decided to paint a brooding atmospheric landscape which could be seen through the framework of the Ace of spades. This offers a choice of either retaining the whole 'Ace' or removing the mount to reveal the full landscape! Either way, I hope it goes towards helping this ace charity! Please note that final invoices will include buyers' premium at 27% (inclusive of VAT) added to the hammer price. Ewbank's are waiving all vendor commission for the charity. Transplant Links Community is a UK registered non-religious and non-political charity that saves the lives of children and adults in the developing world who suffer from life-threatening end stage kidney disease. Robert Fitzmaurice (b.1960). 3 of Spades. Mixed media on card. 28 x 20cm. Framed. Robert Fitzmaurice: I am a visual artist whose output involves painting, mixed media and collage. My figurative style is fragmentary and references both the art of the past and contemporary culture. I usually work in series with each work involving an interplay between one or more figures and ambiguous forms in order to invoke a particular mood, e.g. contemplative, melancholy, or dramatic. The figures operate in a shallow, theatrical space and tend to possess the frontality and expressive shorthand common to votive art of all cultures. These elements combine to suggest an absurd universe where meaning is fluid and open to interpretation. Often I will start a series of works with an idea inspired by something recently seen or read. Other times I may work more instinctively from images found in books, postcards, the cinema or online. I may also start a new work by tracing an old drawing, or the overpainting and collaging of earlier works, especially proof prints and print matrices. The composition is then subjected to a number of revisions and embellishments. The paint layers involve open brushwork, impasto and glazes, and are often further modified by the introduction of sand, sawdust or collage elements. Colour decisions are driven by the emotional tone and to balance the composition. I am very interested in how the mind assigns value to imagination and experience and how these meet to produce a work or art. My tendency to simplify, filter and truncate is in response to the fragmented and bewildering surfeit of images available to contemporary audiences. Artists of different periods and cultures have used the human figure in order to convey a narrative or personify a concept. By referencing the formal potency of these otherwise outmoded and compromised systems I wish to draw attention to a common ground, or sometimes a point of departure, in order to highlight the absurdities that continue to divide us. The power dynamics of childhood, family and rites of passage feature strongly as I consider they have a universal significance that transcends religion, myth or dogma. Originally from Coventry I studied Fine Art in Sunderland before moving to Reading in 1984 for my MFA. After years of making art around a day-job I became a full-time artist in 2015. I hold a studio in the town at OpenHand OpenSpace and participate regularly in exhibitions nationally and internationally. www.fitzmaurice.works. Interview with the artist: Why did you want to take part in this fundraising initiative I was invited to participate in the 2016 TLC Art Auction and really enjoyed being part of that. I therefore didn't hesitate to get on board with this project. Can you tell us about your artwork What inspiration did you draw on to create your designMy design includes a small central sprite realised through the union of the three spades. In my work I am interested in invoking the figure through a mixture of figuration and abstraction. The spades suit suggested to me a rather austere and weathered character which I have sought to reflect in my choice of materials and surface effects. What is it about the charity Transplant Links that made you want to support them I am very impressed by the important work TLC does in developing countries. Their work makes life-saving operations a reality for those in need. Lizzie Riches (b.1950). 10 of Spades. A4 size, gouache on paper. Framed. Lizzie Riches was born in East London in 1950 and grew up near Epping Forest, where she first developed a love of natural history. Lizzie went to Camberwell School of Art and to Goldsmiths, but felt out of sympathy with the painting styles of the late sixties and preferred to develop her own visual language. Riches lived for many years in rural Suffolk, however it was not the landscape that inspired her, but the birds, animals, plants and insects that she found there. Her interests have widened to exotic flora and fauna and she is particularly fascinated by the relationship between human civilisation and the natural world. Portal Painters first exhibited Lizzie Riches work in 1976 and she has exhibited with them ever since, Lizzie has had solo exhibitions in Chicago and Paris. In 1990 London Transport commissioned a painting as part of the ‘Art in the Underground’ series. Recent commissions include sixteen paintings for P&O’s luxury cruise liner ‘Aurora’ many of which show her current passion for painting people. A series of eighteen paintings depicting the character and history of the classic and noble grape varieties were commissioned by Websters Wine Publishers for 'Grapes & Wines' by Oz Clarke. In 2000, Leopold Joseph Private Bank acquired and commissioned several paintings for their boardroom. In the same year Lizzie undertook an eighty foot mural for a country house in Kent. In the summer of 2012 Lizzie undertook a series of eighteen paintings for an exhibition in the National Trust property Blickling Hall in Norfolk. The exhibition was in the world famous seventeenth century library and reflected the history of the family and gardens. A recent series of portrait ‘anomalies’ with people portrayed in Elizabethan and Jacobean clothes with a contemporary element have proved very popular. Lizzie Riches often undertakes commissioned paintings, usually portraits executed in her own imaginative style. Riches paintings are in The Sainsbury, Standard Chartered and Prudential Collections and in 2016 Lizzie was commissioned to undertake a number of paintings for the Restaurant and Bar area of the recently refurbished Queen Mary, these were loosely in the style of Doris Zinkheisen who had painted the original murals. Lizzie Riches exhibits exclusively with Portal Painters at the major London Art Fairs. Please note that final invoices will include buyers' premium at 27% (inclusive of VAT) added to the hammer price. Why did you want to take part in this fundraising initiative A fantastic brief, an amazing line up of artists and throughly worthwhile charity. Can you tell us about your artwork What inspiration did you draw on to create your design When making a charity artwork, the importance is in creating something unique to the cause. But creating a special artwork is only half the story, it also requires a buyer/collector to dig deep and purchase it to help raise those vital funds. For me, the team of Jennie and Aimee was the inspiration - The TLC team on top of St Paul’s reaching for the moon, taking their work from England to the rest of the world. They are surrounded by diamonds in the sky, each one a life saved. What is it about the charity Transplant Links that made you want to support them TLC’s two person mission to help save lives deserves all the support and exposure it can get to help achieve their goals. Where knowledge and wisdom can help save the lives of children and adults, you want to support this however you can. I can’t perform kidney transplant surgery... but I can create fine art. We do our bit, so they can do theirs. Sue Munson (b.1949). 8 of Diamonds. Signed verso. 26.8 x 20.4cm. Framed. Sue Munson: I am influenced by everyday events, and how my mind interprets and processes these happenings. My work proposes another way of seeing and feeling. During the ’80s I lived in North America where I studied art, and embroidery specialising in 19th century needlework. Returning to the UK I studied Textile Art, Design and contemporary embroidery. After graduating, I found working on canvas and other supports far more exciting and spontaneous: the principles I had learned stayed the same. My minimalist paintings although abstract in appearance contain a hidden depth of marks and layers which reveal a jewel like burnished effect as hints of colour are exposed. The content within my signature shape veers from the energy and exuberance of mark making to the quiet contemplation of a straight line. The lively and the contemplative. My abstract work plays a huge part in my creative output allowing me to explore larger themes and ideas which eventually return me to the serenity of my minimalist work. Please note that final invoices will include buyers' premium at 27% (inclusive of VAT) added to the hammer price. Ewbank's are waiving all vendor commission for the charity. Awards include the Exhibition Prize, SKETCH2013 (Rabley Drawing Centre), the Nottingham Castle Open(2016)(2014)(2012)(2011) and the Dragon Prize (Cambridge School of Art). Selected solo shows include 'Lost' at the Rabley Drawing Centre, 2017, 'Perfume and Savages' at the Lakeside Arts Centre, Nottingham and’Fantastical Landscapes’ at the Tarpey Gallery, Castle Donington which featured in the Guardian in 2017. This year Jackie exhibited in Athens and London. A solo show at Winchester College gallery is programmed in for 2019. Jackie’s work is inspired by human behaviour, in particular the subtle nuances of body language which often reveal feelings of vulnerability, power or indifference. Current paintings also focus on the domestic environment using home decor as a means of human expression, providing props and clues for the viewer to interpret. This initiative is an original way to raise money, both for the artists and buyers. I have been involved in a number of postcard shows so it is quite interesting to work to a different brief. I am looking forward to purchasing the deck! The Jack of Diamonds was a careful choice - referencing a shortened version of my name and the riches (diamonds) relating to raising money for charity. I love the traditional imagery of a deck of cards and guessed there would be lots of contemporary interpretations which I look forward to seeing. My creation is a nod to tradition, the ‘Jacks’ top and tailing- and an anchor to a deck containing more abstract imagery. My inspiration comes from Alice in Wonderland and the white rabbit. TLC is a small charity and I feel a very connected to the cause. There is a direct link between creating the work and raising money for something really worthwhile. Aimee and Jennie are also fantastic and make us feel really valued! Please note that final invoices will include buyers' premium at 27% (inclusive of VAT) added to the hammer price. Jake and Dinos Chapman (b.1966 & 1962). Queen of Clubs. A4 size. Signed. Felt-tip on paper. Framed. The Queen of Clubs design features the signature smiley face of Jake and Dinos Chapman, who create iconoclastic sculptures, prints, and installations that examine contemporary politics, religion, and morality with searing wit. They first gained recognition with their first solo installation, We Are Artists (1992), in which they stenciled an anti-aesthetic manifesto onto a mud-splattered wall at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in London. From their etchings of Goya-esque piles of body parts to naked child mannequins whose facial features are replaced with genitalia, the Chapman brothers explore the poles of beauty and pain, humor and horror, the sublime and perverse, the diabolical and the infantile, in ways that shock and confront viewers with their own voyeurism. Please note that final invoices will include buyers' premium at 27% (inclusive of VAT) added to the hammer price. Brendan Neiland RA (b.1941). 'Calypso'. Signed, titled and numbered AP XVI/XVI to margin. 58 x 44.5cm. Framed. Brendan Neiland is one of Britains foremost and contemporary painters and printmakers represented in major museums and galleries worldwide including, in Britain, The Victoria and Albert Museum, The Tate Gallery London, The Collections of the British Council and the Arts Council of Great Britain. He has created some of the most memorable images of modern metropolitan existence. His work has been commissioned by leading commercial companies, public service institutions and education establishments and has been the subject of several television documentaries and video programmes. Informed by the practice of photography yet influenced by a sense of the poetics of lights and pictorial structure which can be related to the work of Braque or Magritte, Corot or Vermeer, the art of Brendan Neiland is eloquent of the enigma of existence as it has been manifest in the modern era. At once intimate and grand, celebratory and melancholy, his work often features the soaring glass and steel structures typical of the era’s corporate architecture. At the same time, the work embraces a range of spiritual matters. Able to convey the depths of longing contained within a moments reflection - in the mystery of mirrored light, held in creative equipose between worlds of culture and nature, technology and spirit - Brendan Neiland is an artist whose work appeals to both the public and private realm. Brendan Neiland is represented by the Redfern Gallery. Please note that final invoices will include buyers' premium at 27% (inclusive of VAT) added to the hammer price. [§] GERALD LESLIE BROCKHURST (BRITISH 1890-1978)ADOLESCENCEEtching, signed39cm x 28cm (15.25in x 11in)Provenance: Elizabeth Harvey-Lee, OxfordshireLiterature: Guichard, Kenneth M., 'British Etchers: 1850-1940,' Robin Garton 1981, pl. 11, pp. 29-30.Note: From an edition of 91 and believed to be the 5th and final state.Note: Gerald Leslie Brockhurst's print masterpiece Adolescence is the focal point of the Kirkton House collection of etchings. As the artist's most celebrated work within the medium and one of the greatest prints of the 20th century, it is a perfect centrepiece to a carefully considered collection of British etchings.Throughout his career, Brockhurst was particularly concerned with the evocation of feminine beauty. A precocious drawing talent, he commenced training at the Birmingham School of Art aged twelve, before going on to secure a scholarship to the Royal Academy Schools. He became one of the most successful and sought after portrait painters in London, but always maintained his fundamental skill as a draughtsman. When it became clear that the market for contemporary etching was growing, Brockhurst translated his drawing skills into the technique of etching, mastering the medium and publishing his first set of prints in 1920. The wider fashion in etchings at this time was for landscapes and cityscapes, but Brockhurst pursued the same subjects as his paintings, producing exceptionally detailed portraits and figures studies that became extremely popular. He drew on a wide range of visual influences that celebrated female beauty, from contemporary glamour portraits and fashion photography to Italian Renaissance paintings, to develop his own distinct style. In his ongoing exploration of female beauty and the theme of young womanhood, Brockhurst utilised each of his two wives as regular models. His first wife, Anais appears in etchings he created throughout the 1920s, patiently posing as a range of different characters as well as herself, however, the marriage itself came under strain after she learnt of his infidelity with her sister, Marguerite. Brockhurst then met and fell in love with Kathleen Nancy Woodward, whom he re-named Dorette, following his established penchant for gifting his female portraits and sitters with exotic names, a teenage model at the Royal Academy. She became his regular model and muse, and is the figure depicted in Adolescence. Following his divorce from Anais, they married and moved to the United States, amidst an unsurprising whirlwind of scandal.Adolescence is a charged work, as well as technical masterpiece. Brockhurst's mastery of the etching technique to render a range of surface textures and tones, particularly skin, is profound. This is the largest scale Brockhurst worked on in etching, yet the details are minute, and the process painstaking. His etchings have sometimes been mistaken for aquatints as he manages to create such tonal variety and soft edges, yet each work is etched, line by line, dot by dot. The subject is not so straightforward; the teenaged Dorette sits naked, contemplating herself in front of the mirror. It can be viewed as a psychological portrait as well as a physical one, exploring the complex and contradictory emotions and anxieties brought on by the process of adolescence, a conflict we can see across Dorette's expression, and in her uncertain gaze. This is a vulnerable moment where she is open with her anxieties and lack of certainty and confidence, rather than attempting to mask them. She is almost an adult, and is desired as one by the artist, yet there is still a great deal of youth and vulnerability to her, and it is this blurred boundary that so compelled the artist and continues to make this an enticing, elusive image.Adolesence is widely considered a masterpiece of the etching medium, a tour de force of the skills required to work effectively in the genre, with a subject that is compelling and complicated in its surprising emotional depth.
