Emily Young (British, born 1951)Poet Warrior Purbeck freestone80 cm. (31 1/2 in.) high (including the stone base)Carved in 2000Footnotes:ProvenanceThe Artist, from whom acquired directly by the present ownerPrivate Collection, U.K.'Britain's greatest living stone sculptor' (Financial Times, 2013)Emily Young was born into a creative family in London, her grandmother was the sculptor Kathleen Scott, a colleague of Auguste Rodin and her uncle Sir Peter Scott started the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust in 1961. She began her career as a painter, studying at Chelsea School of Art and Central St Martins in London before travelling extensively, but by the 1980s she had started to carve stone, a medium she has since dedicated herself to for the last forty years.Young practices 'free sculpture', where she approaches each block of stone with no pre-conceived ideas or preparatory drawings but rather allows the material to speak and guide the form that emerges. Using that most ancient of mediums, her unique vision is at once contemporary and antique. The monumental heads are Michelangelesque in their organic emergence from the rock, part polished, part rough-hewn, with each example wholly individual as the stone itself dictates the final outcome with every fault, vein and split celebrated rather than concealed. The artist's lifelong preoccupation with humanity and our troubled relationship with the planet is clear and these still, dignified forms invite private reflection from the viewer, looking both to our past and our future. Youngs sculpture is held in many public and private collections around the globe and she has exhibited at prestigious institutions including The Getty, California, the Imperial War Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. We are grateful to the Artist and EY Sculpture UK Ltd for their assistance in cataloguing the present work. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: AR TPAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium.TP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Ithell Colquhoun (British, 1906-1988)Battle Fury of Cuchullin signed, titled and dated 'BATTLE FURY OF/CUCHULLIN/ITHELL COLQUHOUN/c.1956' (on the stretcher)oil on canvas73 x 59.5 cm. Summer Exhibition of Contemporary Paintings and Sculptures, 2 July–12 August 1950, no.51Cambridge, Heffer Gallery, Ithell Colquhoun, Paintings and Drawings 1942-1953, 20 April–9 May 1953, no.17The writer Derek Stanford (1918-2008) was a respected poet and essayist, who worked closely with the novelist Muriel Spark during the early 1950s. His book of literary memoires, Inside the Forties, contains reminiscences of his long-standing friendship with Ithell Colquhoun. In 1979 when she was drawing up her will he agreed to be her literary executor and was offered a painting in appreciation.According to legend, Cuchullin (more commonly spelt Cuchulain) was one of the mightiest heroes of the Celtic race and Champion of Ireland. During combat he would become possessed by a battle fury which made him unbeatable. He features in a number of plays and poems by W.B. Yeats, an individual much admired by Colquhoun as much for his magical attainments as his literary abilities. The present work was painted, in part, using the decalcomania technique that Colquhoun employed extensively ever since her discovery of surrealist automatisms in 1939. Her article, The Mantic Stain, (Enquiry, 1949, vol.2, no.4, pp.15-21) was the first article in the English language to deal extensively with automatism and still remains the most detailed exposition of the various techniques. We are grateful to Richard Shillitoe for his assistance in cataloguing this lot. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Museum, Beijing, and the Guangdong Museum of Art, Guangzhou, China. The BBC documentary, Maggi Hambling : Making Love with the Paint was first broadcast in October 2020 and is available on BBC iPlayer. Hambling has established a reputation over the last four decades as one of Britain's most significant and controversial artists, a singular contemporary force whose work continues to move, seduce and challenge.'Miss Mace, Saturday Night, was a portrait from memory of an evening visit to the home of our local tobacconist. She had come to my studio to pose for a portrait, and at the end of it Bette and I visited her with a lot of barley wine. This was new to her and she gradually disappeared into a world of her own, her arms repeatedly finding three separate positions. This is the first time I painted multiple arms.' * HERBERT WHONE (BRITISH 1925 - 2011), TRAM & FIGURES IN RAIN, BYRES ROAD oil on canvas, signed and dated '61 image size 128cm x 77cm, overall size 140.5cm x 89cm Framed. Provenance: A private Glasgow collection. Note: "Tram & Figures in Rain, Byres Road" is quite likely to be the holy grail for Herbert Whone collectors. It is similar in size to "Tramcar in Fog" which is owned by The National Galleries Scotland and held in the collection of The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. It is also almost exactly four times the size of "Glasgow Tram" (by Whone) which sold in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 20th June 2021 (lot 520) for £13,000 (hammer). "Tram & Figures in Rain, Byres Road" is illustrated as a full-colour page in "Herbert Whone, Glasgow - In Transition" (a 112 page illustrated hardback book) which accompanies this lot. Herbert Whone was born in Bingley, West Yorkshire, where his parents were both employed in the cloth mills. He was encouraged by his mother to ''improve'' himself culturally, and from an early age took photographs and practised the violin. After education at the Royal Manchester College of Music (now the Royal Northern College of Music) and Manchester University, he secured positions in the Royal Opera House Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, before moving to Glasgow in 1955, where he took up the position of deputy leader of the Scottish National Orchestra. He was inspired by Glasgow's changing fortunes and painted a series of notable canvases featuring the beauty of a city and surrounding areas in transition. His paintings of trams and shipbuilding on and around the Clyde, to pick two of his fondest subjects, were presented with warmth and beauty, almost impressionistic in their depiction of glowing sunsets and use of rich colour. Herbert Whone (often incorrectly catalogued as Herbert Bannister Whone, his father's name) continued to paint long after his departure from Glasgow in 1964 and made several trips back to Scotland to paint, but It's the relatively small body of work produced in and around the city that stands testament to his exceptional talent. Whone's paintings, while highly collected and critically acclaimed, are still to attain the full recognition and commercial value they deserve and will surely eventually achieve. Known collectors of Herbert Whone's paintings included Joan Eardley, Margot Sandeman, Cyril Gerber, Johnny Beattie and Magnus Magnusson. Growing collector interest in Herbert Whone has seen his auction record price being beaten on an almost annual basis in recent years. This is even more impressive as auction appearances of his Glasgow paintings are becoming ever rarer. Public collections include: Glasgow Museums & Galleries, The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, The Hepworth, Kirklees Museums & Galleries, Salford Museums & Galleries and The Mercer Gallery (Harrogate).

Lot 167

Fritz Scholder (American, 1937-2005). Oil painting on paper depicting two abstracted human figures - one purple, the other green - in the midst of an embrace. The couple is set against a dark gray background with an amorphous form protruding from them and reaching out towards the left frame. Signed along the lower right in pencil.Fritz Scholder was born in Breckenridge, Minnesota in 1937 to parents that worked in pottery and in school administration for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Fritz Scholder’s paternal grandmother was a member of the Luiseño tribe of California’s Mission Indians. Thus, he was one-quarter Indian and did not identify as an Indian. He was raised in Wahpeton, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin, attending public schools with primarily Anglo children. His first American Indian instructor was Oscar Howe at a high school in Pierre, South Dakota, who introduced him to modern art. In the 1950s, Scholder and his family moved to California, studying at Sacramento City College with Wayne Thiebaud, a pop artist. Thiebaud presented him with early opportunities to showcase his work. Scholder’s first show was in 1961 in Sacramento, which received excellent reviews. Scholder’s style was that of bold colors and generous brushstrokes. After graduating with an MFA Degree in 1964, Scholder became an instructor at the newly formed Institute of American Indians Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico, remaining there for five years. In 1967 he began creating a series that maintained his bold, contemporary style that combined Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art, while introducing depictions of the contemporary lifestyle of American Indians. With humor, he presented such clichés, and he drew attention to the issues of self-alienation and the enforced alienation of these citizens. He resigned from teaching in 1969 and travelled to Basel and Egypt before settling in Scottsdale, Arizona. He then moved into the American Portrait series. He also pursued tactile sculpture, which merged his experience of the medium in graduate school with his imagination. The American Portrait series and sculptural works were inspired by his collection of Egyptian artifacts that he lived with, along with a desire to imbue his work with more of his self.Scholder’s Indian series continued to garner attention while his newer series were being explored. In 1972 a two-person show with a former student, Two American Painters: Fritz Scholder and T.C. Cannon, opened at the American Museum of Art of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C. to good reviews and it traveled to Romania, Yugoslavia, Berlin and London. He began the American Portrait by 1980 and the Flower series in 1979, inspired by his surroundings and the challenge of pursuing non-figural subject and in a beautiful manner. His work was shown at the Basel International Art Fair in 1974, The Tucson Museum of art for a 1981 retrospective, and the Phoenix Art Museum in 1997 for his beastly artworks. In addition three documentaries were produced on the artist, in 1977, 1997, and 2008, the former two made by PBS. Following his death in 2005, an important exhibition was held in 2008 at the National Museum of the American Indian, Washington D.C. and New York, called “Fritz Scholder: Indian/Not Indian,†which placed many of his artworks from private collections on public view. Today Scholder’s works are in the collections of: Museum of Modern Art; Brooklyn Museum of Art; Art Gallery of Toronto; Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris; Center Cultural American, Paris; Los Angeles County Museum, California; San Francisco Museum of Art; National Collection of Fine Arts; and the Houston Museum of Fine Arts.Provenance: Private collection, Minnesota.Sight; height: 29 3/4 in x width: 22 3/4 in. Sam Francis (American, 1923-1994). Monotype on paper titled "Doubled," 1985. This print depicts an abstract composition of amorphous forms in various colors such as red, blue, yellow, pink, and green. Signed in pencil along the lower right.Provenance: Pamela Auchincloss Gallery, Santa Barbara, CAPrivate Collection, MNSam Francis came to be an artist under unlikely circumstances. After serving the Air Force during World War II, Francis was injured during flight test maneuvers and subsequently hospitalized. It was while he was recovering that he first began to paint. Francis went on to graduate from the University of California, Berkeley in 1950 with a degree in art and began his European travels. His first stop was Paris, where he studied Monet’s “Water Lilies†and developed a relationship with the Matisse family and artists such as Al Held, Joan Mitchell, and Jean-Paul Riopelle. He went on to develop and maintain studios in Bern, Paris, Tokyo, Mexico City, New York and Northern and Southern California.Sam Francis was considered a revolutionary master of color, space, and light. His works call to various art movements - New York Abstract Expressionism, Impressionism, Art Informel, and color field painting. They are characterized by bright, vibrant splashes of color against a luminous white background. Francis took great interest in the creative process, but his understanding of the relationship between color and light set him apart from contemporaries such as Jackson Pollock and solidified him as a key player in contemporary art history.Provenance: Pamela Auchincloss Gallery, Santa Barbara, California; Private collection, Minnesota.Sight; height: 22 1/4 in x width: 22 in. Richard Ansdell, RA (British, 1815-1885)Harrison Blair Fishing on the Spean signed 'R. Ansdell./.1855' (lower left) oil on canvas69.5 x 122.5cm (27 3/8 x 48 1/4in).Footnotes:ProvenancePainted for Harrison Blair. And thence by descent to the Great Grandfather of the present owner.ExhibitedLondon, Leicester and Liverpool, The Arts Council of Great Britain, British Sporting Painting 1650-1850, 1974, no. 202.Sotheby's, The British Sporting Heritage. A loan exhibition of Works of Art, 19 December 1984-18 January 1985, no. 275.This present lot is a remarkable painting. Not least for the depiction of an unusual subject, but for the very strong provenance that accompanies it – something of a rarity these days. This is because, until now, the painting has remained in one family throughout. It originally belonged to the Godfather of the present owner's grandfather. The Godfather's great-uncle was a Mr. Harrison Blair who is depicted here fishing on the River Spean. Mr. Harrison Blair was a great friend of the artist, Richard Ansdell – so much so that two of Ansdell's sons were named Harry Blair Ansdell. The first son died of croup in his infancy (the only Ansdell child to die) and the next born – another son – was also called Harry Blair Ansdell. He became a Printseller.Mr. Harrison Blair (c.1812-1870) was a prominent figure in Lancashire society. He was first Chairman of Kearsley Local Board. He was also founder and Chairman of the Kearsley Gas Works and later a Magistrate and, together with his wife, a philanthropist. He was a Manufacturing Chemist at Kearsley together with Richard Ansdell's eldest son (Thomas Chester Ansdell): this probably defines the link between the two families. He was a contemporary of the artist and they became firm friends, both taking estates on the River Spean in the Highlands of Scotland. Both gentlemen loved fishing for salmon, hence this wonderful portrait by Ansdell of his friend standing stoically in full gentleman's regalia in a pool amongst the rushing waters of the river. He is depicted as catching a fine fresh run salmon with a rod which would have been state of the art at the time – probably a 'Whippy' rod of greenheart (a mahogany-type hardwood) rather than the earlier, less yielding, ash and oak. Mr. Blair is ably assisted by his gillie who is kneeling on a wet and slippery boulder gaffing the salmon before it is brought in.Mr. Blair cuts a fine figure in his stylish clothes, grey top hat, starched wing collar and gold fob watch standing unperturbed in icy waters in (I presume) his everyday boots and stockings. He would have been in his late forties, his hair greying already. The gillie is beautifully depicted as he crouches over the boulder in his kilt, getting uncomfortably wet, jostling with the writhing salmon; his Tam O' Shanter and plaid draped over the rocks in the foreground. The salmon itself is a masterpiece of depiction. This is a dramatic painting of a typical fast-flowing major Scottish river carving its way between banks of glowering rock with the ever-present threat of heavy rain, a hopeful touch of blue in the sky and the wheeling flocks of birds, so typical of Ansdell. The water itself is depicted with huge strength and purpose, from the tiny slants of white caught by the wind dripping off the road, to the spray dashing against the rocks and the tremendous power of the current creating eddying surf which can almost be heard. The water itself invites close and fascinating study – it is obvious that Ansdell enjoyed himself immensely when he painted this wonderful and unique study of his friend, Mr. Harrison Blair. We are grateful to Sarah Kellam, great, great Granddaughter to Richard Ansdell RA, for compiling this catalogue entry.
