* WILLIAM BIRNIE RSW RGI (SCOTTISH 1929 - 2006), ROCK VILLA, PITTENWEEM oil on board, signed and dated '63 image size 60cm x 90cm, overall size 74cm x 104cm Framed. Artist's label verso. Note: An exceptional and large example of Bill Birnie's work. Note 2: Bill Birnie studied at Glasgow School of Art under Gilbert Spencer and then at Hospitalfield under Ian Fleming. After graduating, he joined the staff at Hyndland Secondary School in 1952. That same year he was also elected a member of the Society of Scottish Artists (SSA). In 1958, he became a founder member of the Glasgow Group and formed the Glasgow Group Society, of which he was Vice-President for 32 years. In 1965, he was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW), a society of which he also became Vice-President and Treasurer. He became Principal Art Teacher at Douglas Academy, near Bearsden, and later at Gryffe High, near Kilbarchan. Bill's abilities not only as a teacher but also as an administrator were noticed by the Department of Education and he was soon appointed Head Examiner in Art for Scotland. He still managed to maintain a very active exhibiting schedule, and showed in all the main public galleries and many of Scotland's best commercial galleries. His work was enthusiastically collected and increasingly sought after. He was elected a member of the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art (RGI) and of the Paisley Art Institute (PAI). In the early years he painted from his garden, showing the village of Kilbarchan in its changing seasons, under a quiet blanket of winter snow, or framed in a blazing sunset through autumnal trees. Later visits to France and Italy with his artist wife, Cynthia Wall, whom he married in 1953, brought new subject matter, cafe scenes, vine groves, Italian cliff top villages, and the crumbling facades of palaces and churches of Venice. It was characteristic of the man that when told that his illness was terminal, he calmly put his affairs in order and started work for a final one-man show at the Open Eye Gallery (Edinburgh) the scene of so many of his successful shows. Unsurprisingly, the exhibition was a complete sell-out. In recent years there has been a widely acknowledged acceleration in the prices achieved at auctions around the UK for William Birnie's paintings. In the Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 8th November 2020 lot 567 "The Red House" a 60 x 90cm (the same dimensions as Rock Villa, Pittenweem) sold for £3000 (hammer) which, not for the first time in recent years, set a new auction record for a painting by William Birnie.

Lot 515

* HERBERT WHONE (BRITISH 1925 - 2011), WINTER SCENE WITH COAL-MAN, ROTTEN ROW (aka "A Glasgow Winter") oil on canvas, signed and dated '61 image size 61cm x 108cm, overall size 76cm x 122cm Framed. Provenance: Fully illustrated and titled in "Herbert Whone, Glasgow In Transition" plate 20, page 68 and a copy of this 128 page hardback book included with this lot. Acquired by the current owner in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction 27th March 2016 lot 2156 then titled "A Glasgow Winter" for £9920 (premium) and at the time, a new auction record price for an artwork by Herbert Whone. Note: In our opinion, one of the finest examples of the work of Herbert Whone to be offered at auction. Herbert Whone was born in Bingley, West Yorkshire, where his parents were both employed in the cloth mills. He was encouraged by his mother to ''improve'' himself culturally, and from an early age took photographs and practised the violin. After education at the Royal Manchester College of Music (now the Royal Northern College of Music) and Manchester University, he secured positions in the Royal Opera House Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, before moving to Glasgow in 1955, where he took up the position of deputy leader of the Scottish National Orchestra. He was inspired by Glasgow's changing fortunes and painted a series of notable canvases featuring the beauty of a city and surrounding areas in transition. His paintings of trams and shipbuilding on and around the Clyde, to pick two of his fondest subjects, were presented with warmth and beauty, almost impressionistic in their depiction of glowing sunsets and use of rich colour. Herbert Whone (often incorrectly catalogued as Herbert Bannister Whone, his father's name) continued to paint long after his departure from Glasgow in 1964 and made several trips back to Scotland to paint, but It's the relatively small body of work produced in and around the city that stand testament to his exceptional talent. Whone's paintings, while highly collected and critically acclaimed, are still to attain the full recognition and commercial value they deserve and will surely eventually achieve. Known collectors of Herbert Whone's paintings included Joan Eardley, Margot Sandeman, Cyril Gerber, Johnny Beattie and Magnus Magnusson. Growing collector interest in Herbert Whone has seen his auction record price being beaten on an almost annual basis in recent years and his current "high" had been £11,000 (hammer) until The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction on 6th June 2021 when "Glasgow Tram" (lot 520, a 57 x 40.5cm oil) sold for £13,000 (hammer). This latest record price is even more impressive as "Glasgow Tram" is significantly smaller than half the size of "Winter Scene With Coal-man, Rotten Row". Auction appearances of Herbert Whone's larger paintings are becoming ever rarer. Public collections include: Glasgow Museums & Galleries, The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, The Hepworth, Kirklees Museums & Galleries, Salford Museums & Galleries and The Mercer Gallery (Harrogate).

Lot 528

She is also a frequent exhibitor in the RSA, RGI and PAI annual exhibitions and in England her galleries include Thompson's, Lime Tree Gallery and Red Rag Gallery. In 2007 she was acknowledged by the Glasgow Herald as one of the top 50 Scottish artists in whom to invest. In The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 19th January 2020 lot 539 "Before The Dance" by Marion Drummond, probably a sister painting to "After The Dance", sold for £2200 (hammer).

Lot 535

* SIMON LAURIE RSW RGI (SCOTTISH b. 1964), IRON AGE acrylic on board, signed, further signed and titled verso image size 80cm x 90cm, overall size 103cm x 113cm Framed. Label verso: The Lemond Gallery, Glasgow. Note: Probably the most impressive and largest Simon Laurie painting to be offered at auction. Note: Simon Laurie is a contemporary Scottish landscape and still life artist, whose paintings are characterised by references to Scottish life and society, incorporating fish, boats, religious symbols and everyday items. These objects are arranged upon a rich textural ground created by the application of multiple layers of acrylic paint. He has worked with acrylic paint for almost 30 years, developing his own individual style and fundamental visual language. Laurie was born in Glasgow and studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1982 to 1988. He was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours (RSW) in 1991 and the Royal Glasgow Institute (RGI) in 2000, where he served as convener for six years. He has had many solo shows, both in the UK and abroad, and has won many prestigious and major awards. His work is held in many public, private and corporate collections including Aberdeen Art Gallery, Contemporary Arts Society, London; Feren Art Gallery, Hull; Freshfields, London; Leicestershire Education Committee; Lillie Art Gallery, Milngavie; Nationwide Building Society, London; Royal Bank of Scotland; TSB Headquarters, London; Unilever PLC; William Teacher and Sons Ltd; Wyse Group; Walter Scott Investments Ltd, Edinburgh; Biggart Baillie; Aberdeen Asset Management; The Whisky Society, Edinburgh; Adam and Co Bank; Provident Financial; The Scottish Arts Club, Edinburgh.

* NEIL MACDONALD RSW RGI PAI, FIRST LIGHT, ST ABBS oil on canvas, initialled, titled label verso image size 97cm x 71cm, overall size 119cm x 93cm Framed and under glass. Artist's label verso. In our opinion, the finest example of Neil MacDonald's work to be offered at auction, anywhere. Note: Neil Macdonald has been the recipient of many awards including 2013 Elected RSW (Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour); 2013 Joe Hargan Award, Maclaurin Fine Art Exhibition, Ayr; 2013 Elected RGI (Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts); 2012 The Smithy Gallery Award (PAI); 2012 Diploma of the Paisley Art Institute; 2011 Robert Innes Award - Scottish Drawing Competition; 2009 Discerning Eye, London- Scottish Regional Winner; 2009 Charles Jamieson Award PAI; 2008 University West Scotland Award PAI; 2006 EDC Ann Stevenson Memorial Award; 2005 EDC Purchase Prize; 1997 Contemporary Art Prize (Eton) Paisley Art Institute; 1981 David Cargill Travelling Scholarship (Italy and Belgium); and 1979 William Shanks Painting Prize. Neil MacDonald trained at Glasgow School of Art from 1975 until 1980, where he developed his considerable skills as a painter and consummate draughtsman. He is drawn to locations that exert historic and mythic presence, exploring the lyrical narrative of natural sites and strong bold shapes of castles, old townships and harbours. He does this through distortion of perspective, invention and editing, aiming to capture an essence of the structure or place. Colour is used in an emotive way to heighten the sense of mood, applying each layer upon layer of paint in a divisionist manner until a unity of statement is realised as the image emerges, revealing the subject’s unique sense of place. This fine example in superb condition has been consigned by a private collector from Gloucestershire who is in the process of downsizing.

* ROBERT JOHN MACMILLAN, ENGULF oil on board, signed, titled and dated 2008 verso image size 86cm x 86cm, overall size 105cm x 105cm Framed. Note: from 1993 to 1997 Robert studied Drawing and Painting (Fine Art) at Duncan of Jordanstone, focusing on single figured portraits that were greatly influenced by the old masters. "For some time now my work has involved using a figure within voids of empty space. I have been fascinated by the delicate relationship that exists between figure and space; too much of the dark void and the figure is engulfed; too much focus on the figure and the presence of the space is forgotten. I love the intimacy, and the intensity, which can be created through the use of a single face or solitary figure, theatrically lit, embraced in a velvety darkness that surrounds. In both subject matter and use of paint, there is a definite acknowledgement of painters past. Rembrandt’s influence permeates through all my work, not only his use of chiaroscuro but also the surface quality that he achieves with the paint like the sleeve of the bridegroom in his work ‘The Jewish Bride’; the constant reworking of paint, creating a texture and luminosity that begins to emanate from the source material and, through constant scraping and glazing, achieve a richer conclusion. Over the last couple of years my work has included landscape studies; inspired in part by the magnificent views close to where I live along the Fife Coastal Route. The work also demonstrates the influence of a number of landscape painters who I greatly admire: James McNeill Whistler, George Innes and many of the American Tonalists". Macmillan's most recent Solo show was at The Scottish Gallery (Edinburgh) in March 2020. The Scottish Gallery is widely regarded as Scotland's most prestigious contemporary art gallery.

Note: A Scot, born in Ayrshire in 1936, Erni Upton has been painting since childhood. Schooled at Ayr Grammar & Ayr Academy, much of his youth was spent with the fisherfolk of West Scotland and their boats and he still cruises these waters each year. He trained at Glasgow School of Art, where he studied under Donaldson, Mathieson and Robertson. His work reflects their influences and those of the Scottish colourists who like him, spent much time in the wonderful light and colours of the West Coast. He continued to work in oils, mainly commissions for corporate and private clients, but it was not until 1999, when the company was sold, that more time became available for painting. His work is successfully shown in many galleries in England, Scotland and abroad, most recently in Istanbul, where he was invited, as a result of commission work, to have a solo exhibition at the British Embassy, and a subsequent solo at one of the premier galleries in the city. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts, London, in November 2004. * RYAN MUTTER, CLYDE BUILT oil on canvas, signed image size 117cm x 97cm, overall size 137cm x 116cm Framed. Note: Ryan Mutter was born in 1978, he studied at The Glasgow School of Art, where he graduated in 2001. He has now won many distinguished awards, including four from the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts (RGI). His inspiration comes from Britain's industrial heritage and its connection between man and the sea. In Glasgow alone shipbuilding provided work for 70,000 men in more than 50 yards spread along 11 miles of quayside. But today these yards sit empty, a shadow of their former self. The advancements made in technology and design methods superseded the old, and made once important skills and craftsmanship redundant. This is what drives Ryan as he looks to capture and remind people of how important this workforce was in the development of the modern world. A new UK auction record was established for a Ryan Mutter painting when "The Launch" was sold in McTear's Scottish Contemporary Art Auction on 2nd July 2017 (lot 39) for £2600 (hammer). However, in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 28th March 2021, two new Ryan Mutter records were set at £2800 and £3000 (both hammer prices).

His work is often related to the Modern Scottish School but Peter has a flamboyant style which is unique, – detailed brush work combined with loose fluid strokes creating vibrant contrasts of pure colour, line and tone. In the winter months within his studio he delves deeply into the still life genre, creating some of his most stunning compositions, always with colour the dominant theme but reflecting the heightened sense of atmosphere and passion that comes directly from painting in the beauty of the Mediterranean. Recently, hugely successful exhibitions in London have allowed Peter to take on extra studio space and his work is being enthusiastically exhibited by many of the UK's most prestigious galleries. Impressive recent auction prices include (a larger example) "Decorations with Flowers" which was sold at McTear's in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction for £2800 (lot 580, 26th May 2019).
