His psychedelic, post-Pop style has captivated global audiences since his debut in the New York scene of the 1980s. Launched into the limelight alongside his friends and colleagues Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring as the figurehead of a new, rebellious generation of American painters, Scharf assimilated street art, Neo-Expressionism, and Pop Art into a heady, bombastic style that captured the punkish energy of the Lower East Side during its most famed years. Presented here are two exceptional works on canvas by Scharf, DNA (DO NOT ASK) and SEXOMETRY, from 1994 and 1992, respectively, in addition to an eccentric and unique piece, painted on a vehicle hub cap, that revives the personified ceramics of Picasso and Cocteau. Full of all the symbolism, imagery, and flair that the artist is so revered for, the taste for Scharf's eclectic style has reached fever pitch in recent months, as Scharf has collaborated with French fashion house Dior this summer season to launch a limited range of artist-designed garments. His place as one of the most significant and highly sought-after artists is assured; his cultural footprint as an icon and tastemaker is cementing itself as his influence grows. In the early 1980s, Scharf's rise to fame was explosive and well-documented. Befriending Keith Haring at the School of Visual Arts in New York, the two were committed collaborators, most notable for their parties, exhibitions, and events held at Club 57. In 1985, however, Scharf's inclusion in the Whitney Biennial with the first iteration of his Cosmic Cavern, immediately placed him at the forefront of painterly practice, subsequently being represented by Tony Shafrazi – one of the most important New York gallerists of the decade. In the present works, the plethora of imagery and fusion of techniques demonstrates Scharf's immense talent as an artist who has traversed the dialogues of contemporary practice, producing work that is consistently cutting edge and timely. In DNA (DO NOT ASK), the swirling double-helix sits atop screenprinted mechanical parts and Star Trek's 'Enterprise' – a subtle tie-in to Scharf's Cosmic Caverns. SEXOMETRY, presents a larger and still more intricate network of imagery. Formally existing between 1959-1961, the style of the group was rooted in Concretism; a movement that emphasised the materiality and geometries of their compositions. The works presented here demonstrate the strength and subtle varieties of the visual language that Los Diez devised, resplendent in sculpture, multidimensional canvases, and works on paper. Latin American Modernism has often been overlooked and undervalued. Subjected to the political isolationism of Fidel Castro's rule that forced many of its artists to flee in the years after the 1959 Revolution, the history of these pioneering groups has found renewed traction in recent decades as the Modernist canon is realigned. In the 1940s and 50s, following the Constitution of 1940 that engineered radical ideas and major social reforms, Cuba was undergoing a dramatic urbanisation and rising global standing that created an energetic and internationally minded artistic class. At the centre of Los Diez was Pedro de Oraá and Soldevilla, husband and wife whose Galería Color-Luz formed the nerve centre for the group's ideas since its founding in 1957. In a decade of insurrection and revolution, Los Diez were the leading artists of the era who established an identity for Cuban art that was contemporary, pioneering, and captivatingly unique. Concretism emerged in earnest in the 1930s in Europe – a term coined by Theo van Doesburg, and championed by artists including Max Bill, Julio Le Parc, and Francois Morellet. It established a break from the school of abstract geometric painting that was deemed to be too 'referential' and a development of Cubist aesthetics that was essentially rooted in representative forms. In Cuba, Concretism became the language of the avant-garde, politically charged as a style that was international and progressive. In Darié's Serie Dinamismo Espacial and Columna Espacial, the geometries and refined palette of Cuban Concretism is utterly recognisable; akin to Piet Mondrian and Josef Albers' compositional and colour theories whose interlocking elements reduced a painting to a series of discrete choices. Here, Darié's works demonstrate the advanced stages of geometric painting that border on the optical – taking the formulaic approach of the European school inherited from the Bauhaus and imposing a far richer, more complex strategy of delineating form through colour. The same rings true for Mijares' Untitled work from 1963, whose lattice of collaged blocks feels reminiscent of the sub-tropical architecture of Havana. Soldevilla, however, is undoubtedly the grande dame of Cuban Concretism. Not only was she pivotal in the establishment of the Los Diez, but her artistic versatility and sense of material is supremely apparent in the two Untitled works presented here: a table sculpture and relief on canvas, respectively. He volunteered for service at the age of 29, a commando, he was subsequently captured at Dieppe in 1942 and spent three years as a prisoner of war. Naturally he found it difficult to produce any art throughout the conflict, but as soon as peacetime returned, he set about working. These early post-war years saw limited success for Hilton as he endeavoured to re-start his career whilst also juggling several part-time jobs and a young family. Initially Hilton worked in the figurative mode he had developed pre-war. Yet towards the end of the decade his interest in abstraction heightened, primarily in the Parisian Tachisme movement (examples of which were first shown in London in December 1949). Thus, his output pivoted significantly and, with it, his career.It only took until 1951 for Hilton's efforts to be recognised, at first as part of the mixed exhibition Abstract Art at the AIA galleries in the summer of that year. The early patronage of Howard Bliss saw his work exhibited at the Tate Gallery the following spring, and by the summer of 1952 his first solo exhibition was held at Gimpel Fils. Working in a now entirely abstract approach described by Hilton as 'Neo Plastic', his paintings attracted the attention of key critics such as Lawrence Alloway and Patrick Heron. Both championed Hilton as a protagonist within a new wave of British abstract art by selecting his work for inclusion in key exhibitions such as Heron's Space in Colour at the Hanover Galleries in 1953. Further success followed with a second Gimpel Fils solo exhibition in 1954 and his position was cemented by his inclusion in Alloway's important Nine Abstract Artists published the same year.Amid such positive momentum one could be forgiven in assuming that Hilton had struck upon an approach to be explored for years to come. This however was not the case. Writing to Terry Frost just prior to the execution of the present canvas, Hilton volunteered 'I am tired of non-figuration. Though they may not be overtly figurative, I am going to introduce if possible, a more markedly human element in my pictures ... I'm not going to [be] 'afraid' of figuration anymore. I give prominence to space-creating forms, but I shall make human attachments as I see fit' (quoted in Adrian Lewis, Roger Hilton, Ashgate Publishing, Aldershot, 2003, p.63). This new manner of working - the oscillation between abstraction and figuration, of which the present canvas is one of the earliest examples, henceforth dominated Hilton's output for the greatest part of his career. Hilton's importance was subsequently marked by his first retrospective held at the ICA in early 1958, which led to the Tate Gallery and the Arts Council both making their first acquisitions of his work.It is therefore not surprising that the importance of October 1955 within Hilton's oeuvre has been recognised on several occasions. Notably by Lawrence Alloway who selected it for inclusion in the 1959 British Council exhibition, its inclusion in the major 1994 Hilton retrospective at the Hayward Gallery and by Andrew Lambirth for inclusion in his 2007 monograph, in which he writes:'Hilton's forms of this period have a lively resilience that impresses through their strangely self-contained shapes ... The paint is rich and juicy, texturally varied and spontaneous. The image looks as if Hilton has copied down signs from another language, a visual language consisting of pictograms and hieroglyphics, so full of potential meaning do these pictures appear'.
