Paul Hodgson Portrait of E, 2021 Pencil and Acrylic on Paper Signed on verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) Paul Hodgson creates hybrid works that incorporate photography, digital print and paint, and that defy neat categorization. His work is indebted to the history of Western painting, and certain of his earlier works reference the colours, lighting, and figurative poses of iconic art historical works, but they are manipulated and restructured to bring to the fore a contemporary reading of the image. Subsequent works have seen Hodgson concentrate on historical epochs of expansion and transition, using the conventions of portraiture and figure painting to construct large-scale tableaux vivant - alongside intimate studio portraits - to explore moments of great change, but also of ambiguous merit. In recent works, he has chosen to use a relatively confined space in which to construct each scene. Working with a set of simple objects, his focus has been the placement and positioning of objects and figures in space (and in front of a camera) as a means to explore notions of gesture and intentionality within the process of image making. These works operate in an area between painting and photography, both in terms of the language that they employ and the process through which they have been made. Paul Hodgson was born in Shrewsbury in 1972 and lives and works in London.   1998 - 2000 M.A. Printmaking. Royal College of Art, London 1991 - 1995 B.A. (Hons) Fine Art. Newcastle University 1990 - 1991 Foundation Art and Design. Shrewsbury College of Art & Technology Selected Group Exhibitions 2020Summer Exhibition, Royal Academy of Arts, London 2016 Discerning Eye, the Mall Galleries, London. Invited by Michael Glover 2014 Beauty by Design: Fashioning the Renaissance, Scottish National Portrait Gallery 2013 Image Search: Photography from the Collection, Pérez Art Museum Miami 2011 Unbounded, Proje4L, Elgiz Museum of Contemporary Art, Istanbul Selected Solo Exhibitions 2010 Paul Hodgson: Art in the Entrance Hall, Cambridge University Library 2008 Rise + Fall, RISE Berlin, Berlin 2007Sovereign Rights, Marlborough Fine Art, London Awards 2010 Director's Visitor, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton Over the past twenty years I have been represented by Marlborough Fine Art, London, Feigen Contemporary, New York, and Houldsworth, London. I am currently working with an independent dealer in London.   About the Postcards I often make works on paper as a way to reconsider motifs that have featured in larger painted and printed works, and to introduce new elements to my art practice. I like the immediacy and fluidity that working on paper can offer - the unexpected results that can occur when you use various media together, or the simplicity of limiting yourself to a few simple materials. These two portraits were made partly from observation and partly from photographs. They might appear as stages in a process - from concise and pared down, to layered and complex. They are indicative of the 'push and pull' that often happens when I'm making images in the studio.

Timothy Gatenby Fake Charizard, 2021 Oil on Paper Signed on verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) Timothy Gatenby is a contemporary British figurative artist who nostalgically paints modern imagery such as motorways and pop culture with a traditional Old Master approach. Through his limited palette and a ghostly distortion of imagery a sense of foreboding lurks behind the softly executed painting surface in Gatenby's world. His work has been displayed at the National Portrait Gallery, Royal Academy of Art, Mall galleries and Birmingham Society of Artists. In recent years Gatenby's work has been selected for the Columbia Threadneedle Prize Exhibition (2018), Royal Society of British Artists (2018), the New English Art's Club (2014), BP Portrait Prize (2012) and the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (2019, 2012) Gatenby's paintings feature nostalgic characters from 90s television, rendered with a painterly quality more associated with the esteem of Fine Art than the amusement of light entertainment. Familiar characters, usually known for being brightly colored and fun, are depicted in washed-out hues; their smooth cartoon-like surfaces represented as textured and greyed. The usually jovial characters of popular television are stripped of their bright, happy personalities and on them, something much more sinister is superimposed. There is a sense that these characters from happy childhood memories have been lost to the passage of time; that history has forgotten them, that they have been brushed aside in the wake of newer incarnations of characters for popular amusement; washed up at the banks of the mainstream of entertainment, becoming just an afterthought no longer foregrounded, except in these paintings. The same dynamic underlies Gatenby's motorway paintings, which take the often disparaged aesthetics of concrete and tarmac from some of Britain's major roads, and sets them as the atmosphere of landscape paintings that hint at the classical discipline which they reappropriate for a brutalist, modern setting. All the while, throughout the various styles and themes that Gatenby explores, small idiosyncratic moments crop up, where, as if for his own amusement as much as anybody else's, a joke or a pun is given expression through a depicted object seen out of place, or an expectation subverted by an oddity, giving the work a touch of the absurd, since the emotional thread spun on the notion of disgraced and forgotten figures of childhood television 'and the depressing vision obscured by petrol exhaust fumes on the highways and byways of life' becomes an irony. The works thereby achieve a certain circularity of meaning, by which a tragi-comic interpretation can be pursued as far as one wishes to take it. The forgotten characters are not forgotten after all, but return under a different guise.

Uthman Wahaab Untitled Charcoal on Paper Signed on front 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) The multidisciplinary artist Uthman Wahaab was born in 1983 in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria and grew up in Lagos. Wahaab is an artist who possesses an overarching interest in social phenomenon and eschews a consistent use of medium or even singular aesthetic style. Utilising the disciplines of drawing, painting, graphic design, film, photography, sculpture and installation, Wahaab's foremost concern is developing a new visual language that consciously rejects traditional forms of depiction in order to document ongoing history and unfolding reality. Wahaab's current work focuses on issues of identity, beauty, sexuality, and cultural influences that inform technological change and social shifts in Africa. To move forward in a globalised world, carefully examining the past and learning from historical lessons are of the utmost importance. The artist is truly committed to giving back to the community by exercising artistic agency to shed light on difficult and often tenuous political, economic, and social dynamics. The artist's work provides a critical lens on social phenomenon not only within Africa, but more significantly looks at the ways that globalism and post-colonialism complicate the African socials-cape.   Studied Fine Art at The School Of Art, Design and Printing Yaba College of Technology, Lagos Nigeria. ( Catalogue)   About the Postcards These drawings are from the phenomenal women series I started about a decade ago. Phenomenal Women confronts the dogma of the traditional reclining nude. Inspired by an encounter with a woman with larger than normal stature and the extreme anxiety she felt about facing the world, The series is a nod to the Fattening Room tradition in Nigeria that contradicts western-centric standards of beauty and sensuality and a reflection to Freudian theories of female vanity, suppression, and alleged sexual inferiority. It aims to appropriate these conventions by emphasizing the under-appreciated beauty that exists in the curves and contours of voluptuous female figures and to celebrate the female form as an awe inspiring, powerful object that may exist independently of sensuality. My figures serve a different purpose than the classical tradition. The portrayal of bodies in these works also suggests a certain disinterest in Western imposition of beauty ideals on African women and society.

Pedro Paricio The Collectors, 2021 Mixed Media on Paper Signed on verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) Paricio was born on 16 January 1982 on Tenerife in the Canary Islands. As a child, he was always drawing, but at high school he studied science and only began to contemplate a future in the arts a few months before going to college. 'To be honest, the thing that attracted me was the freedom that society gives to the artist', he explains. 'I chose art because I wanted a different life'. Yet, with the benefit of hindsight, he now feels that the chain of events that led him into art was a process of discovering his fate, his destiny. Paricio enrolled at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of La Laguna, Tenerife, moving on to a course in Salamanca and completing his training with a degree in Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona (2004-2006). While at college, he considered a career as an art critic-cum-curator; such essays as Unfinished Articles I and II convey a lucid intelligence that enables him to reflect, for example, on the tyrannical relationship between artistic theory and practice. Paricio was focusing mostly on sculpture, installation and video art at the time of his first group show, Don't Call it Performance (2004), at Domus Artium 2002 (DA2), Salamanca, Spain, but shortly afterwards decided to make painting his sole medium; he considers the latent possibilities of painting to be infinite and dismisses the idea of using other media or technology in response to fleeting fads in art. Paricio currently divides his time between Tenerife and London. His paintings are held in many private collections around the world, and he enjoys an international reputation following exhibitions throughout Europe and the United States. The Master Painters show at Halcyon Gallery, London, in 2011 made an impact on the international art scene, and in 2012 The Theatre of Painting, his solo museum exhibition in Spain, was staged at the Institute of Culture and Arts of Seville. In early 2013, he took part in the Gabinete de Curiosidades, a mixed exhibition of works by modern and contemporary artists at the Plataforma Arte Contemporáneo (PAC), Madrid, and the Art Madrid Maestros Art Fair in Madrid. Paricio was honoured to be selected for inclusion in Francesca Gavin's book 100 New Artists (2011), representing an innovative generation that is forming the aesthetics of the coming decade. 2006 BA Fine Arts, University of Barcelona, Spain SOLO EXHIBITIONS 2019 Paricio, Picasso, Halcyon Gallery, London, UK 2016 Dreams, Halcyon Gallery, London, UK 2014-15 Elogio de la pintura, Espacio de las Artes (TEA), Tenerife, Spain 2014 Dialogo con el color la belleza y la forma, Galería Muro Valencia, Spain 2014 Shaman, Halcyon Gallery, London, UK 2012 Diary of an Artist and Other Stories 2007-2012, Halcyon Gallery, London, UK 2012 The Theatre of Painting, Casino de la Exposición (ICAS), Seville, Spain 2011 Master Painters, Halcyon Gallery, London, UK 2010 Fe infinita, Galeria Balaguer, Barcelona, Spain 2009 Pedro Paricio, Seyhoun Gallery, Los Angeles, EEUU 2009 Un pintor otro, Galeria Muro, Valencia, Spain 2008 The Canary Paradise, Ikara Gallery, Barcelona, Spain 2006 Intimissimo, Espacio Joven, Salamanca, Spain SELECTED GROUP EXHIBITIONS 2018 ArtRocks, Halcyon Gallery, London, UK 2017 Quijotes en tiempos de crisis, Liceo de Taoro, La Orotova, Spain 2017 Pelé: Art Life Football, National Football Museum, Manchester, UK 2017 Clouded Lands, Fundación Caja Burgos (CAB), Burgos, Spain 2015 Pelé: Art, Life, Football, Halcyon Gallery, London,UK 2015 The Art of Creating, Halcyon Gallery, London, UK SELECTED COLLECTIONS Fundación Cesáreo Rodríguez-Aguilera, Jaén, Spain Fundación Caja Burgos (CAB), Burgos, Spain Norton Museum of Art, Florida, EEUU Espacio de las Artes (TEA), Tenerife, Spain Ernesto Ventos Collection, Olorvisual, Barcelona, Spain SELECTED PUBLICATIONS 2019 Paricio, Picasso, published by Halcyon Gallery, London, UK 2016 Dreams, published by Halcyon Gallery, London, UK 2015 Pelé: Art, Life, Football exhibition catalogue with essays: Brian Winter, 'Why Pelé Still Inspires Us'; Dr.Bernard Vere, 'Andy Warhol, Pelé, and the 'Athletes' Series' (Halcyon Gallery) 2015 Elogio de la pintura, exhibition catalogue (TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes)

"I hope that when people experience my work, they are able to relate to the stories they contain, merging their own subjectivities with the presented narratives. Within this practice, I am particularly drawn to instances of lamentation - I find much of my art bears a common expression of grief and sorrow. However, I would be remiss to erase all joy from my work. Perhaps, instead, these are the poles between which my work oscillates, trying to evoke the power of both harrowing loss and intense joy; I find that the interplay of these feelings prove an opportunity to reflect on what's important, and what to cherish."   Chelsea College of Arts / Camberwell College of Arts 2020 I is Another. As a teenager, Salomé admired a teacher who encouraged her to pursue training in calligraphy and painting. Her work examines otherworldliness through translations and ever-evolving interpretations of a personal mythology, formed from her observation of time, fragility, and the interplay between reality and the unseen. Understanding herself primarily as a global citizen, Salomé works to keep her art devoid of contemporary models of identification and taxonomy, relying on obliquely biomorphic figures to populate her work. Across mediums, she presents a nonlinear journey, weaving together seemingly disparate moments to unveil previously concealed narratives. Salomé lives and works in London, UK.

Ariane Heloise Hughes Dinner Party (1), 2021 Oil on Primed Paper Signed on verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) Ariane Heloise Hughes is a British/Australian painter based in London. Graduating with a BA in painting from Camberwell in 2019, Ariane then spent a year making work and assisting sculptor Dario Ghibaudo in Milan. She currently has a space with VO Curations in Aldgate and spends most, if not all, of her time in the studio covered in paint. Hughes' paintings navigate the tenuous threshold of the subject/object dichotomy. Through her blending of contemporary and traditional imagery, amalgamation of figuration and setting, she challenges this rigid paradigm. Throughout her practice, the female nude is a recurring subject as it personifies the subject/object dualism within the Western Canon of Art. Through investigating this traditional trope and by playing on both sides of the threshold between the mundane and the surreal, Ariane hopes to conceive of a new visual vernacular for desire. One that operates outside the norms of conventional beauty and 'the gaze'.   Painting BA (Camberwell UAL)Columbia/Roman Road residency (May-June 2021) 'Get A Load Of This' (Daniel Raphael Gallery, May 2021) 'First Swing Of The Bat' (Gallery 46 Whitechapel, April 2021)     About the Postcards   I recently attended a dinner party where octopus had been served and watched as the host prepared the slimy, glistening tendrils. I was captivated by the aesthetic interplay between their fingers and the octopus legs - unpleasant yet beautiful. I wanted to capture this visual paradox within the postcards, creating a sense of intimacy and beauty despite the strange and slightly off putting subject.

George Blacklock Abraxas, 2021 Acrylic on Paper Signed on front and verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) George Blacklock (b1952) was born in County Durham, England and studied at Sunderland Polytechnic for one year before going on to study painting at Stourbridge College of Art in the early seventies. He graduated from his Masters at Reading University in 1976. George has exhibited extensively in Europe and North America throughout his career and has been represented by Flowers since 1996. He has received awards from the Welsh Arts Council, the Greater London Arts Association and was a prize winner at the John Moores contemporary painting competition in the nineties. George Blacklock has work in major public collections including the Arts Council of Great Britain. The British painter has also been the Dean of Chelsea College of Art and Design, London since 2011. "A lot of my paintings have shapes and gestures that converse, or are compromised, or can be seen to co-exist, or dominate, or retreat, or expand, or to re-iterate, in other words exist in a visual narrative. This narrative is complex both in formal terms and in its associations and metaphors. I often equate my abstract forms to the metaphysical realms of religious art. I value 'touch' as an expressive function of painting as well as a major contribution to non-linguistic, non-linear narrative." Despite the abstract output of the artist's work, Blacklock doesn't see himself completely as an abstract painter. By looking closely at the curvilinear shapes that dominate his paintings, we could almost interpret these as narratives for the complex relationships that exist in his main source of inspiration: life. Not only a painter but a musician and art teacher too, George Blacklock finds his inspiration in various fields such as music, religion or simply in the observation of his peers from the Renaissance to Willem de Kooning. In 2015 Colour and Abstraction was published, in which Blacklock has comprehensively described his methods and reasoning, relating his work to the tradition of abstract painting. In 2016 George Blacklock collaborated with Gary Oldman on a two-person exhibition of paintings and photographs, exploring the mutual creative threads connecting their distinct artistic practices, following on from their joint exhibition at the Museo De Las Artes, Guadalajara.

George Blacklock Apparition, 2021 Acrylic on Paper Signed on front and verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) George Blacklock (b1952) was born in County Durham, England and studied at Sunderland Polytechnic for one year before going on to study painting at Stourbridge College of Art in the early seventies.

Kate Dunn Don Dada, 2021 Spray Paint and Oil Bar on Paper Signed on verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) Kate Dunn makes work pulling on themes of renaissance, rave, light and sacred space, to create varying environments of worship. Since 2018 she has used structures reminiscent of the altar to discuss the internal archive one experiences when faced with such a shape. Recently she moved into multi-sensory experience as a means to address her concern with the potential to be passive in the age of information overload. Kate uses sight-specific installation and UV reactive materials to manipulate the display of her paintings and create a confrontation with the viewer. In June 2021 she has a solo show, THE TABERNACLE at TJ Boulting and a two-person show, FUGUE with Robert Cooper at The Tub, London. Kate Dunn (Edgware, UK, 1993) is a London based artist. She has studied at Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design, The Florence Academy of Art and City & Guilds of London Art School, where she is now a tutor.   2021 THE TABERNACLE, welcome to pharmakon (solo), TJ Boulting, UK 2021 FUGUE: Robert Cooper x Kate Dunn, The Tub, UK 2020SKIN OF LIGHT (solo), SET Alscot Rd, UK 2020when shit hits the fan, GUTS Gallery, Online 2020The House We Built, London, UK 2019The Discerning Eye Exhibition, Mall Galleries, UK 2019Seen or Seeing, Bethnal Green Railway Arches, UK 2018 Contemporary British Painting Prize, Huddersfield Art Gallery, & Menier Gallery, UK 2018 Great Women Artists x Palazzo Monti Residency, Italy 2018 MA Fine Art Show, City and Guilds of London Art School, UK 2018Interim, City and Guilds of London Art School, UK 2017The Great Women Artists Exhibition, Mother London, UK 2017 The Ruth Borchard Self-Portrait Prize, Piano Nobile Kings Place, UK 2016 The Summer Exhibition, Royal Academy of Arts, UKN/A   About the Postcards Through drawing I have been looking into the aesthetics of digital intimacy and digital touch over the past year. What does it feel like to exist intimately in a digital state, how do colour and expression equate through such a medium, and what does this look like when returned to the physicality of the studio. The colours steal from the oversaturation of the screen. The marks imitate those left by our fingers after a session of scrolling. The works question how relationships manifest spatially in this realm; how close or communicative can we be within the formally constructed programs of the digital age. When plugged in how do we burst, scream, hum or do we simply sit static. The works draw their titles from the music listened to around the time of making; they are a continuation of the conversation that began during the creation of FUGUE, a two-person show opening in June with Robert Cooper at The Tub, London.

Jordan Wolfson Photographic Reproduction of Female Figure, 2014, 2021 Photographic Print on Paper ACCOMPANYING COA 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) Jordan Wolfson is known for his thought-provoking works in a wide range of media, including video, sculpture, installation, photography, and performance. Pulling intuitively from the world of advertising, the internet, and the technology industry, he produces ambitious and enigmatic narratives that frequently revolve around a series of invented, animated characters. Through his art, Wolfson probes difficult, often controversial topics and themes that underlie American culture and contemporary society. Wolfson was born in 1980 in New York. In 2003 he received his BFA in sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design. The artist joined David Zwirner in 2013 and has presented solo exhibitions of his work at the gallery in New York in 2014, 2016, and 2018. In 2020, ARTISTS FRIENDS RACISTS marked Wolfson's fourth solo exhibition with David Zwirner. A concurrent installation of the works was on view at Sadie Coles HQ, London. Solo exhibitions of the artist's work will be presented at the National Gallery of Australia, Parkes, Australia, in 2021 and at Castello di Rivoli, Museum of Contemporary Art, Turin, Italy, in 2022. In 2018, the inaugural London presentation of Jordan Wolfson's Colored sculpture took place in the Tanks at Tate Modern. The work features a sculptural figure of a boy suspended by chains and references the racism of the characters Huck Finn and Howdy Doody, as well as the Mad magazine mascot Alfred E. Neuman. Also in 2018, The Broad in Los Angeles presented Jordan Wolfson's (Female Figure) and the Zabludowicz Collection in London presented 360: Jordan Wolfson. In 2016, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam hosted a two-part survey of the artist's work, MANIC/LOVE/TRUTH/LOVE. Jordan Wolfson: Ecce Homo/le Poseur, the most comprehensive survey of his work to date, was organized by the Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst (S.M.A.K.) in Ghent and presented in 2013. Other institutions which have hosted solo presentations of his work include Moderna Museet, Stockholm (2019); Schinkel Pavillon, Berlin (2018); Pond Society, New Century Art Foundation, Shanghai (2017); Cleveland Museum of Art (2015); Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna (2012); REDCAT, Los Angeles (2012); Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf (2011); CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco (2009); Swiss Institute of Contemporary Art, New York (2008); Galleria d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Bergamo, Italy (2007); and the Kunsthalle Zürich (2004). Craig Jefferson Head Study, 2021 Gouache on Paper Signed on verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) Craig makes paintings and drawings that explore still life, figure and landscape subjects, seeking to investigate the profound qualities that exist in our surroundings. Craig approaches his subject matter by careful observation and depiction of form to develop an understanding and personal connection with what he sees. He then moves from an observational response to an intuitive one seeking to get beyond the 'presented appearance', as Bomberg puts it, to the 'other side' of the subject. Craig allows his imagination to speak and inevitably abstract relationships develop within the work resulting in paintings and drawings of an ambiguous form that occupy the space between realism and abstraction. White has had an association with this subject matter since childhood, like most youngsters, Dinosaurs had a proud impact on him as a child and he has never lost this sense of wonder. This is what the collection translates, the legacy of over 30 years as a painter, expanding the narrative of his visionary foresight and presenting a unique collection which transcends artistic boundaries. Extinct cements the importance of Whites previous collections based on critically endangered wildlife which are heading for the same fate as Dinosaurs.

(Ortelius Drew)   About the Postcards   Silver Linings, Warrior Clouds (2021) This new body of work builds on two previous series: 'Excess All Areas' (2019) where I was interested in exploring excess: overflowing vessels pour forth their contents and offer a vehicle to visualise the rhythm and energy of overflow and inundation. 'Around and Around' (2020) was an attempt to visualise journeys into and across slippery spaces. This new work returns to representation, these are recognisably clouds, their volumes punctured with slivers of paper woven into and through the surface. I see these slivers as dynamic lines, swords or daggers: ready to fight, but they can also been seen as mending a whole, the holding together of both sides of the cloud. The clouds and their silver linings represent possibility and hope.

Evans Mbugua Born in Nairobi in 1979 and after obtaining his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1997, Evans MBUGUA decided to continue his studies in France, a surprising destination for a student from an English-speaking African country. After graduating from the University of Toulouse, he enrolled at the l'École Supérieure d'Art des Pyrénées (Upper School of Art of the Pyrenees) and obtained a graphic design degree in 2005. While at the same time starting a professional career as an art director in a communications agency in Toulouse, MBUGUA continued to explore the field of visual arts in his personal studio. In 2011 he decided to go to Paris, where he has since devoted all of his time to artistic exploration and design. MBUGUA has exhibited his work in prestigious institutions and events all over the world. Josie Clouting Collecting Colours II, 2021 Acrylic on Paper Signed on verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) Her paintings are intuitive, emotional responses to her natural environment, inspired by the vastness and wonder of the natural world.
