PAIR OF FINE ORMOLU AND MARBLE MOUNTED BRULE PARFUMS, ALMOST CERTAINLY BY PAUL-CHARLES SORMANI, in Neoclassical style, third quarter 19th century, each with a shallow domed dove-grey marble cover with berried finial, above an openwork collar cast with anthemia in oval reserves, the dished dove-grey marble bodies with cavetto shoulders, each mounted with three seated term maidens holding trumpets to their lips and rising from scrolled acanthus leaves; on reeded stems rising from the backs of sejant gryphons, on triform bases, atop triform marmo breccia Siena bases, each with three bun feet, 48.5cm high, 22cm wide Note: This pair of perfume burners are based upon a model in Sevres porcelain and gilt bronze attributed to Pierre-Phillipe Thomire and now in the Louvre (inv. Paul Sormani (1817-1877) was one of the most important Parisian cabinet makers of the second half of the 19th century. He commenced business at 7 Cimetière Saint-Nicolas and in 1847 moved to 114 rue du Temple. By 1867 when he opened at 10 rue Charlot, he was at the pinacle of his sucess. A contemporary source describes his work in glowing terms, 'toute sa production révèle une qualité d'exécution de tout premier ordre' Sormani first showed his work at the 1849 Paris exhibition where he was awarded a bronze medal and again at the International Exhibition in 1855, when he obtained a first class medal. He travelled to London in 1862, where he gained another award and at the Paris exhibtion of 1867 special mention was made of his petits meubles de fantaisie. Santini (Giuseppe, Italian military engineer and amateur draughtsman, fl. 1630-1663) Libbro di Figure diverse fatte nel 1663/ In Livorno/ Libbro Terzo, folio album of 25 drawings of academic nudes and studies after old masters, with decorative title-page featuring ornamental coat of arms trimmed and pasted to album leaf, of the drawings six are executed in red chalk, 8 in black chalks, 8 in red chalk on red-coloured prepared paper, and 3 in black chalk on blue-coloured prepared paper, some heightened with white, all signed with monogram in ligature, four drawings affixed onto all album leaves, the rest executed directly on album leaves themselves, various 17th century Italian watermarks throughout, all pages with ruled double border and page number, with leaves 8 and 9 missing, each leaf approx. 400 x 270 mm. (15 3/4 x 10 5/8 in), some scattered finger-soiling and surface dirt, one or two marginal nicks and areas of marginal loss, printers' creases and rough corners, bound in contemporary vellum, over pasteboards, inked title on spine, very worn, folio, circa 1663⁂ An important and recent addition to the body of work by the little known amateur artist and collector, Giuseppe Santini. While Santini's landscape drawings have appeared on the art market in recent years, there appears to be little precedent for figurative works executed in chalk such as those in the present album. A native of Pisa, Santini was a pupil of the sculptor and engineer to the Duke of Tuscany, Ferdinando Tacca. He is also said to have been a follower of Stefano della Bella. [1] From 1670 onwards he worked in Pisa as an engineer with the rank of captain, and was responsible for the restoration of palaces, castles, churches and the Medici armory in Pisa; his surviving maps from this period show his ability both as a geographer and as a draftsman. The landscape drawings by Santini that have surfaced on art market highlight the influence of the Tuscan School; specifically the drawings of Giulio Parigi, Remigio Cantagallina, and Ercole Bazzicaluva et al. His known collecting habits also point to his interest in the drawings of his Florentine contemporaries such as Baldassare Franceschini Volterrano. [2] Other albums produced by Santini are known, and include an album once held in The Fondazione Longhi collection, which was broken and sold in 1982, and comprised fifty-four sheets depicting landscapes, single figures of hunters, peasants, armored knights, and anatomical studies. The Uffizi likewise owns a surviving title-page by Santini and four of his drawings with subjects relating to Florence, all from another one of his albums, 'Disegni e capricci diversi copiati dal natural in diversi luoghi Libro Nono'.[1] M. Privitera, "Il capitano e ingegnere Giuseppe Santini, collezzionista di disegni e disegnatore", Paragone, Arte, 60 (2009)[2] cf. Stephen Ongpin Fine Art, specifically the provenance for Baldassare Franceschini Volterrano's 'Devils Dragging Damned Souls into Hell'.

* PETER GRAHAM ROI (SCOTTISH b 1959), OLD TOWN, ALTEA gouache on paper, signed and dated '89 75cm x 62cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Note: A rare appearance at auction for one of Scotland's and the UK's most successful contemporary artists. Peter Graham was born in Glasgow in 1959. He attended the Glasgow School of Art, graduating in 1980. In 2000 Peter was elected to Full Membership of The Royal Institute of Oil Painters, R.O.I. Peter has earned a reputation as one of Britain’s most gifted and distinctive Modern Colourists. His work is often related to the Modern Scottish School but Peter has a flamboyant style which is unique, – detailed brush work combined with loose fluid strokes creating vibrant contrasts of pure colour, line and tone. In the winter months within his studio he delves deeply into the still life genre, creating some of his most stunning compositions, always with colour the dominant theme but reflecting the heightened sense of atmosphere and passion that comes directly from painting in the beauty of the Mediterranean. Recently, hugely successful exhibitions in London have allowed Peter to take on extra studio space and his work is being enthusiastically exhibited by many of the UK's most prestigious galleries.
