David Shrigley (British, b. 1968) Untitled (SOME OF MY BEST FRIENDS ARE PIGS) - One of the Four Animal series , 2019 Lithograph prints on paper 2020 Printed by Narayana Press, Published by ShrigShop, Copenhagen Unsigned and unframed  80 x 60cm (31 1/2 x 23 5/8")  David Shrigley was born in 1968 in Macclesfield, UK. He lives and works in Brighton and Devon, UK. In January 2020 the artist was awarded the decoration of Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire or OBE. His digital animations such as ‘Headless Drummer’ and ‘The Artist’ demonstrate what Shrigley calls ‘the economy of telling stories’, delivering a deftly crafted mix of dark and light through the simplest of forms. In his sculptural works, rendered in materials such as bronze and ceramic, the artist makes physical some of his more curious and eccentric propositions by transforming found objects or by playing with their scale. Taking Lewis Carroll's perspective of Wonderland, Shrigley enlarges objects and imbues them with curious proportions.  Shrigley was a Turner Prize nominee in 2013, following his major mid-career retrospective ‘Brain Activity' at the Hayward Gallery, London. In September 2016, his monumental sculpture ‘Really Good' was unveiled in Trafalgar Square, London for the Fourth Plinth Commission. Other solo museum exhibitions include those at Copenhagen Contemporary, Denmark (2020); Newstead Abbey Historic House & Gardens, Nottinghamshire, England (2019); Museo de arte Carrillo Gil, Mexico City, Mexico (2019); Art Omi, Ghent, New York, USA (2019); Spritmuseum, Stockholm, Sweden (2018); Deste Foundation Project Space, Greece (2018); Fabrica, Brighton, England (2018); Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, Massachusetts, USA (2016); National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia (2014); Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, Germany (2014); Hayward Gallery, London, England touring to Yerba Beuna Centre for the Arts, San Francisco, USA (2013); Cornerhouse, Manchester, UK (2012); Mumbai Art Rooms, Mumbai, India (2012); Turku Art Museum, Turku, Finland (2011) and Bergen Kunsthall, Bergen, Norway (2009). Shrigley’s works are included in prominent collections internationally, including Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA; Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois, USA; Museum Ludwig, Cologne, Germany; Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, Germany; Centre Pompidou, Paris, France; Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen, Denmark; Thyssen-Bornemisza Contemporary Art Foundation, Vienna, Austria; Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, Scotland; Tate, London, England; British Council, London, England; and National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia. Lot 87

Julian Opie (British, b. 1958)  Pleated skirt, 2019 Printed for On occasion of Julian Opie at Gerhardsen Gerner, Oslo 2019 21 x 15cm (8 1/4" x 23.5") Julian Opie was born in London in 1958, and studied at Goldsmiths College of Art from 1979 – 1982. He lives and works in London. Opie's early works are narrative: irreverent, tongue-in-cheek sculptures based on famous works of art, of everyday objects such food, furniture and books, made from cut and painted steel. Later works, also made from steel but with an entirely different surface finish, suggested the cool precision of domestic appliances and 'white' goods. His work developed an architectural presence with sculptures made from metal or wood, which recall offices, houses and the architectural detailing of public spaces, combined with references to geometric abstract art and reduced to their most basic elements. Over the past decade he has consistently pursued painting with a strong graphic and pared down style. Drawing from influences as diverse as billboard signs, classical portraiture and sculpture, to classical Japanese woodblock prints, Opie 'paints' using a variety of media and technologies which enable him to make three-dimensional explorations of his subjects. An example of this is Suzanne Walking (2005) which portrays one of Opie’s most commonly featured muses. The use of a lenticular print gives the illusion of depth and movement, bringing Suzanne to life as the viewer walks around the work. Opie’s graphic portraiture style and use of computer aided design has seen him move easily between the fields of contemporary art and commercial design. In 2000 he was commissioned to design the cover of an album for British band Blur, and in 2006 created an LED projection for U2’s Vertigo world tour. This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.

A RARE AND LARGE CALCIFIED JADE ZHULONG ('PIG DRAGON')紅山文化 玉豬龍Neolithic period, Hongshan cultureof generous proportions, the iconic coiled body further accentuated with a superbly rendered wrinkled snout, the signature slit below the sealed lips terminated before meeting the central perforation, the neck drilled for suspension. 12.2 x 10 x 4cmProvenance: Bought in Hong Kong during 80-90's. NOTE Renowned for its considerable size, this sculpture portrays a zhulong, also known as a pig-dragon. This term is a contemporary description of the creature's upturned snout, prominent bulging eyes, and coiled body. Zhulong are regarded as the prototypes for later depictions of mythological dragons in Chinese art. These intriguing creations originate from the enigmatic Hongshan culture, which thrived around 3500 BC and provides evidence of a complex belief system in supernatural forces. Jade zhulong sculptures have been unearthed at various tomb sites in Northern China, often found placed on the chests of the tomb occupants, indicating that they were likely worn as chest ornaments.

Hamish MacDonald is now widely regarded as one of Scotland's most successful contemporary artists. Since 1964, Hamish staged numerous solo exhibitions in Scotland and Cornwall. * HANNAH FRANK (SCOTTISH 1908 - 2008), GARDEN (1932) lithograph on paper, signed in pencilmounted, framed and under glassimage size 32cm x 28cm, overall size 53cm x 43cm Note: "Garden (1932)" is one of the rarest Hannah Frank signed prints. A previous example of this print was sold (by McTear's) for £650 (lot 526 The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction 27th September 2020). Since McTear's first promoted Hannah Frank's spectacular work in 2011, the prices for her ever more rare signed prints have continued to rise with many current prices being more than five times higher than those achieved barely a decade ago. The latest UK auction record figure for a single signed lithograph was most recently achieved (twice) in our auction on 24th October 2021 and now stands at £820 (hammer). Note 2: Hannah Frank was the last living link to the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau period. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art and Glasgow University in the 1920`s and her haunting pen and ink drawings have been exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Glasgow Institute. A series of lithographs of some of her 90 drawings were made in the 1960's and again in the 1980's to satisfy the demand for her work after exhibitions in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Only a relatively few of these prints were hand signed (in pencil) by Hannah and it's understood that only one print was ever editioned (numbered) in a conventional manner. A major exhibition at the Royal Glasgow Institute in 2006 brought her work to a new generation of admirers and received considerable press coverage. Her work toured for five years in the UK and the USA culminating in an exhibition at Glasgow University which opened on her 100th birthday 23rd August 2008. After her death, she was awarded a posthumous Honorary Doctorate at Glasgow University and Glasgow City Council`s Lord Provost`s Award For Art (2009).
