Nicole Rose Breeze 2 Oil on Paper Signed on Verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About My work, as an artist and designer, explores my emotional response to the natural world around me. I primarily create abstract paintings based on the landscape. Using layers of oil colour and a sweeping brush technique the finished paintings take on an ethereal quality. Alongside my paintings I also create complementary prints that are at once a reflection of the original painting - and a new perspective on it. Focusing on a photographed section of a finished painting, I work in Photoshop to reimagine and rebalance, creating a run of limited-edition giclée prints that are both a part of the original works - and a fresh response to the landscape in their own right. My current selection of paintings and prints have been created following visits to nature reserves where I records sights, sounds, colours and routes taken, to remember and work from in my studio. I graduated from Central St Martins School of Art in 1992 with a BA in Graphic Design. I have had a successful career as a Creative Director, running my own commercial design studio for many years, and now work from my art studio in North London. Education Central St Martins BA (Hons) Graphic Design 1992   Select Exhibitions/Awards The Other Art Fair July 2021, October 2021, March 2022. Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair November 2021. Shannon Bono I Am Here Acrylic, Spray Paint and Image Transfer on Paper Signed on Verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About Shannon Bono's (b. 1995, London) paintings embody an afrofemcentrist consciousness, sharing muted narratives and projecting the black women's lived experiences. She is invested in producing layered, figurative, compositions embedded with symbols and scientific metaphors that centralise black womanhood as a source of knowledge and understanding. Enamoured by African spiritually, Christian iconography and renaissance art she employs its purpose of cultural impact, liturgy and instruction for an improved society within her works. Shannon explores the internal body as well as the external, by merging the design of notable fabrics from Africa with biological structures and chemical processes in living organisms for the backgrounds of her works and using the anatomy as a second canvas in the foreground. She views the body as a powerful signifier that provokes dialogue, playing with pose, gesture and the gaze to challenge reality.   Education Bono received her MA in Art and Science from Central Saint Martin's University (2019) and a Postgraduate Certificate in from University of the Arts London (2021).   Select Exhibitions/Awards In 2021, Bono presented her first solo exhibition titled "The hands that hold you," at the Anderson Contemporary, London and she has been selected for Bloomberg New Contemporaries award 2021 showing at Firstsite and The South London Gallery. Shannon has been featured in Dazed Magazine and online press by Elephant magazine, Wallpaper magazine, Bustle, i-D and Soho house.   Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork 'I AM HERE' was inspired by an inspirational and informative conversation I had with Julia the National female prison coordinator of the HepC trust. Julia shared with me the amazing and important work the trust are doing and emphasised the importance of reducing the stigma of HepC and aftercare for these women. I wanted the piece to speak to the strength of the women and their journeys those in prison and the women offering support working with the trust. The background design is based on the viral structure of Hep C and the hybrid female figure symbolises the strength of the women. I titled the piece after a poem I read in the I AM magazine which was created for the women in lockdown.

Mafalda Figueiredo Running After Fire Oil on Paper Signed on Verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About Mafalda Figueiredo (b.1991, Lisbon) is a figurative painter. As a child she always felt constrained and observed. This incited within her a desire to create, in order to live the freedom she longed for, through drawings and paintings she produced obsessively. These feelings were intensified in adolescence as the artist became increasingly aware of the gaze of the opposite gender, the objectification of that very look, and the need to either shield from it or accept it. Figueiredo is interested in intuition, self-analysis and self-observation and believes every involuntary idea that comes to mind has meaning and comes as a message from the subconscious. She interprets spontaneous ideas as one interprets dreams: through a process of signification, looking at the visual elements as symbols and decoding their meaning according to the context and experience of the dreamer. Through figurative painting, Figueiredo attempts to project this thought process into images. She portrays figures looking out of the painting as if they are struck by the realization of being observed. She's interested in transitioning states, constantly questioning where and when one moves from the position of object of observation to observer, and the imaginary time and space between these two states. Education Bachelors in Painting at the Fine Arts University of Lisbon   Select Exhibitions/Awards 2019 - Paper Positions Art Fair, Berlin, Germany 2019 - Volta Basel Art Fair, Basel, Switzerland 2019 - "Bonum et Malum" (Group exhibition), Berlin, Germany 2019 - Positions Berlin, Berlin, Germany

Victoria Cantons Change is the Natural Order Watercolour and Archival Ink on Paper Signed on Front and Verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About Victoria Cantons is an artist who happens to be a woman, transgender, and gay. As a trans woman she is keenly aware of limitations and stigmas, which leads her to question how much freedom we have and where our boundaries lie. Cantons wants to understand as much as she can about what it means to be human. She believes that what we as individuals present to the world is multifaceted and not always visible; a continuous evolution in response to experience, and in relationship to each other. The human condition and questions of identity are central to her work. Cantons is interested in themes of power, identity, and male and female perceptions of each other. She says "These aspects connect us all and yet we are also unique individuals". Cantons' painting is figurative and she could be described as a colourist. She is interested in the dialogue between painting's contemporary iterations and its histories. Cantons uses drawing and written notes combined with found and made photographs to navigate between intuitive, intellectual, and aesthetic content informed by a multinational, -cultural and -religious background. An interest in the internal-external dichotomy manifests in an attention to scale, to how shadows form, and to where absences appear. Memories of being different suggest the need to use masks and camouflage as protection, while influencing the paintings as they evolve in an exploration of identity, self, and representation.   Education 2018 - 21 MFA Painting (Distinction), Slade School of Art, University College London 2017 - 18 Painters Studio Programme, Turps Art School, London 2014 - 17 BA (Hons) Fine Art: Painting, Wimbledon College of Arts, University of the Arts London 2013. . . . Elisabeth will be exhibiting some new works with Grosvenor Gallery at Art Dubai this year at the Madinat Jumeirah (9-13 March 2022).   Gallery Representation Grosvenor Gallery, London   Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork In my AOAP pieces, I have used seven colours that repeat. These are gold leaf (23ct), platinum leaf, orange gouache, lapis lazuli, carmine, spinel black and zinc white. Most of my paints are handmade - hand ground with a binder. These pigments are minerals in rock form (lapis lazuli), pigments from plants or from the animal kingdom (e.g. cochineal from insects, also known as carmine - that crazy beautiful red!). My aim is to yield delight and joy through the geometric arrangement of colour. I am interested in intricate patterns and colour relationships. Natural pigments are beautiful. I'm aiming for that right combination of colours which when brought together create vibrations, ones that sing.

Josie McCoy Wangari Maathai Coloured Pencil on Paper Signed on Verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About I paint portraits of characters from the world of film, television and music. I've been committed to this theme since I started painting 23 years ago and, while my way of painting has developed over the years and the subjects have changed with time, I'm still compelled to paint recognisable women from contemporary culture. I am interested in what a viewer brings with them when looking at a drawing or painting of someone they recognise, in terms of their personal memories and references, and how connected we can feel with a familiar face. I'm from Plymouth in the UK and I now live in Valencia, Spain. Education BA Fine Art at Solihull College, West Midlands in 1997 and MA Fine Art at Central Saint Martins in 1999.   Select Exhibitions/Awards I've had solo exhibitions in London, Valencia, Newcastle, Milan and Santiago de Compostela and have exhibited in group shows in Europe, South America and the U.S. My work has been selected for the BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery four times and I was shortlisted for the Castellon International Painting Prize. I received a Woo Charitable Foundation Arts Bursary and won the Centre of Attention Painting Prize. My paintings are included in private and public collections including the BBC, Standard Chartered Bank, Collection of University of Wales, Jeremy Mogford Collection, Borchard Collection of British Self-Portraits in the 20th Century and the Ofelia Martín & Javier Núñez Collection.   Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork Although I usually paint familiar faces from film and television, the drawings I've done for the Art on a Postcard IWD Auction depict two incredible environmental activists, Greta Thunberg and Wangari Maathai, as they are the inspiration for my next two oil paintings. Popular times to meet are dawn and dusk - and these are really interesting times to paint with the light changing rapidly. I began drawing the silhouetted figures in groups. Other people would gather to watch the light show, the groups of women swimmers and to take photos.

Cheryl Pope Woman + Man on Mat Watercolour on Paper Signed on Verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About Cheryl Pope is an interdisciplinary visual artist that questions and responds to issues of identity as it relates to the individual and the community, specifically regarding race, gender, class, history, power, and place. Her practice emerges from the act and politics of listening. Pope's early work involved performative, often sports-related projects, her more recent body of work continues the artist's examination of systematic social concerns, unexpected material interventions, and simultaneously introduces a novel formal language. While she previously positioned herself as a conduit for the voices of the youth impacted by socio-political turmoil, Pope's more recent work puts forth a personal intimacy yet unseen in the artist's oeuvre.   Education BFA 2003 School of the Art Institute Chicago, Masters in Design, Full Merit Scholar, 2010, School of the Art Institute Chicago   Select Exhibitions/Awards Pope received her BFA and MA in Design from the School of the Art Institute, Chicago, where she is now an Adjunct Professor. The drawings grow out of an initial appreciation of the medium itself; the body of the line. I then imagine the line that comes out of my pen to be an enviable body, something which I desire to wriggle into like a second skin. The line is a perfectly impressionable being which yields to the vibrations of my fledgling intent. I discover myself in them. By empathising with the line I create for myself a spiritual prosthesis through which I can temporarily become other, like a dancer slipping into character.

ISMAEL DE LA SERNA GONZÁLEZ (Guadix, Granada, 1898 - Paris, 1968)."Still life violin". Watercolour and coloured pencils.Signed in the lower right area.Size: 30 x 41,5 cm; 48 x 54,5 cm (frame).Ismael González de la Serna began his art studies in Granada and concluded them in Madrid, at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts. In his early years he developed an eclectic pictorial style, drawing on impressionist, symbolist and modernist sources. One of the first examples of his youthful language can be found in the illustrations he made for his childhood friend Federico García Lorca, in what was to be his first book, "Impresiones y paisajes" (1918). That same year, Ismael de la Serna held his first exhibition in Granada, and shortly afterwards he presented his works at the Ateneo in Madrid. In 1921 he moved to Paris in order to broaden his artistic horizons, joining the circles of the School of Paris. Among his Parisian friends was Pablo Picasso, who influenced his work but was, above all, the Granada painter's protector. During this period De la Serna's style was permeable to the influences of the avant-garde, particularly Cubism and Expressionism, which he worked in a highly personal manner. Likewise, the initial influence of Impressionism was always evident in his work. The year 1927 marked the beginning of a period of strong influence on his work, which began with the painter's solo exhibition at the influential Paris gallery of Paul Guillaume. This exhibition was followed by many others, both in Paris and in Berlin, Brussels, Copenhagen, Granada and Mexico. In 1928 he was commissioned by the director of "Cahiers d'Art", Christian Zervos, to illustrate a special edition of twenty sonnets by Góngora. The key to his recognition lies in his sensual interpretation of the forms of Cubism, based on the relevance of a drawing with a sinuous and highly decorative line, combined with strong chromatic contrasts. With a marked spatial sense and without ever abandoning figuration, De la Serna mainly depicted still lifes, in which he emphasised the sensory aspect of his painting with metaphorical sensory references such as music, fruit or open windows. He also worked on landscapes and portraits. After inaugurating the activities of the Asociación de Artistas Ibéricos in Madrid with a solo exhibition in 1932, the painter embarked on new avenues of artistic experimentation which, after the Second World War, led to a more schematic and simplified style of painting, close to contemporary abstract solutions. Ismael de la Serna is represented in the Patio Herreriano Museum in Valladolid, the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, the Fine Arts Museums of Granada and Seville, the ARTIUM in Vitoria, the Popular Museum of Contemporary Art in Vilafamés and the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, among many others.

JULIA MINGUILLÓN IGLESIAS (Lugo, 1907 - Madrid, 1965)."Landscape".Oil on panel.Signed in the lower right corner.Measurements: 70 x 48 cm; 82 x 58 cm (frame).Julia Minguillón began her artistic training at the age of eleven with the painter Castro Cires in Valladolid. She later completed her studies in Madrid, first at the School of Arts and Crafts and later at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts, finally graduating in 1932 as a teacher of drawing and painting. During these years of apprenticeship she was taught by Manuel Benedito, Cecilio Pla, Joaquín Valverde, Ignacio Pinazo and Eduardo Chicharro. Minguillón developed a personal style halfway between postmodernism and naturalism, and painted both landscapes and genre scenes, the latter brimming with a naive lyricism full of sensitivity that would mark later Galician painting. He became known through the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts, and in 1941 he was awarded a gold medal for "Escuela de Doloriñas" (Museo del Prado, on deposit at the Provincial Museum of Lugo). This work perfectly exemplifies Minguillón's style which, according to M.V. Carballo-Calero, is characterised by a tendency towards primitivism, which generally led him to paint on panel rather than on canvas, and by a schematic style with post-Cubist touches in its composition. She also took part in the most important international competitions, as well as in various group exhibitions. In 1948 she was awarded the Grand Prize for Fine Arts, and a year later she moved to Galicia, where she was appointed a corresponding member of the Galician Royal Academy. After a trip to America, in 1961 she settled permanently in Madrid, where she died four years later. She is currently mainly represented in the Provincial Museum of Lugo, although her works also form part of other collections such as the Nova Caixa Galicia, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid and numerous museums in Galicia, the rest of Spain and abroad.

RICARDO OPISSO I SALA (Tarragona, 1880 - Barcelona, 1966)."Bar scene".Oil crayon on paper.Signed in the lower right corner.Size: 25 x 20 cm; 48 x 42 cm (frame).Opisso was a painter, draughtsman and cartoonist. In his youth he took part in the modernist environment of Barcelona, and in fact in 1894 he began to work as an apprentice with Antoni Gaudí in the works of the Sagrada Familia. Two years later, backed by the architect, he became a member of the Círculo Artístico de Sant Lluc, with whom he would later exhibit at the Sala Parés. He was linked to the group Els Quatre Gats, together with Ramon Casas, Manuel Hugué, Isidre Nonell and Pablo Picasso, among others. In 1901 he made a trip to Paris, where Picasso and Hugué were already there. He worked as an illustrator in publications such as "Cu-cut!" and "L'Esquella de la Torratxa", signing drawings aimed at political satire, in a style close to art nouveau. In 1907 he took part in the Fine Arts Exhibition in Barcelona and was awarded a third-class medal. Due to the dictatorship of Miguel Primo de Rivera, Opisso abandoned political satire and his drawings moved towards genre themes, specialising in popular scenes. His works from this period are characterised by the presentation of motley crowds of people in popular Barcelona settings. After exhibiting several times in succession at the Sala Parés, he held his first solo exhibition in 1935 at the Syra galleries in Barcelona. During the post-war period he continued to exhibit in various galleries in Barcelona, and reaped considerable success with both critics and the public. In 1953 he received recognition from his home town at the 4th Tarragona Art Fair. Most of his work is kept in the Opisso Museum in Barcelona, but it is also present in the National Art Museum of Catalonia and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Strasbourg. In terms of exhibitions, the one held at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in 2004 under the title "Catalan Painting, from Naturalism to Noucentisme", in which his work "Carnival" was exhibited, is particularly noteworthy. He has also had anthological exhibitions at the Saló del Tinell (1979), the Palau de la Virreina (1980), the Barcelona International Boat Show (1973), the Fundació La Caixa (1988, 2004, 2008) and the Caixa Tarragona (2003).In the scene proposed by Opisso, the author uses humour and caricature as he often does. With a forced point of view, from the lower, swooping area, Opisso portrays in the foreground a marine's attempt to kiss a beautiful woman. The positions of their bodies create diagonal lines, some of them opposing each other, especially if we look at the couple's legs. While the sailor aggressively approaches the woman, she is cornered at the right edge of the work, being subjected to his kiss. Meanwhile, in the background, the sailor's companions are also enjoying the effervescent atmosphere of the place.

VICENTE PALMAROLI GONZÁLEZ (Zarzalejo, Madrid, 1834 - Madrid, 1896)."Portrait of a lady.Oil on canvas. With restorations.Signed in the lower right area.Measurements: 89 x 70 cm.Portrait of a lady with a long bust, the work follows the precepts established by the genre of the portrait during all the history of art; the neutral background that monumentalizes the figure, the position in the foreground and the strict frontality among other characteristics. However, it is worth noting the pose of the sitter, who is shown before the viewer with her arms crossed, clasping her hands and leaning slightly to one side, which shows how tired she is from hours of posing before the artist and leaves the viewer with an anecdotal element that describes the sitter's personality. Palmaroli was a vigorous portraitist who knew how to delve deeply into the psychology of the sitter and recreate the minute details of her clothing. With a virtuoso brushstroke, he expressed the plasticity of the clothes and the brilliance of the adolescent flesh tones in a veristic language. The son of an Italian lithographer, Palmaroli entered the School of Fine Arts at the San Fernando Academy in Madrid in 1848. A few years later, in 1853, he succeeded his father in the post of lithographer at the Museo del Prado, created especially for him by the king consort Francisco de Asís with the support of José de Madrazo. In 1857 this post enabled him to go to Italy to further his training, accompanied by Eduardo Rosales and Luis Álvarez Catalá. On his return he submitted two paintings executed during his trip to the National Exhibition of Fine Arts of 1862, which were awarded second and first medals. From his earliest works, Palmaroli began to move away from the official aesthetic of his time, evolving towards much more intimate, refined plastic works inspired by contemporary and even everyday motifs. He returned to Italy in 1863 and stayed there for three years, during which time he painted "The Sermon in the Sistine Chapel" (Caja Duero, Salamanca), a work of enormous success which won him the first medal at the National Exhibition of 1866 and very good reviews in Paris. During this period of splendour and pictorial maturity he also painted numerous portraits, including that of the Infanta Isabel de Borbón (Royal Palace, Madrid). Once he settled in Madrid again, in 1871 he obtained his third first-class medal at the National Academy, and the following year he was appointed a member of the San Fernando Academy. In 1873 Palmaroli settled in Paris, where he worked extensively as a painter of tableautins for ten years, at the end of which he was called to Rome as director of the Rome Academy. In the Italian capital he continued with the same genre of anecdotal inspiration until 1894, when he was appointed director of the Museo del Prado, a post he held until 1896. Towards the end of his life, his painting cautiously approached symbolism in such significant works as his Martyrdom of Saint Christina (Prado, on deposit in Jaen). Palmaroli was also the teacher of prominent painters such as Carlota Rosales, daughter of Eduardo Rosales, Casimiro Sainz, Eduardo León Garrido and Domingo Muñoz Cuesta, among others. Vicente Palmaroli is currently represented in the Prado Museum, the Malaga Municipal Museum, the museums of Jaén, L'Empordà, Granada and La Coruña, the Ministry of Public Works and the Royal Theatre in Madrid, the Royal Academy of San Fernando and the Romantic Museum in Madrid, among others.

A GILT COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF BUDDHA, 11TH-12TH CENTURYCentral Tibet. Superbly cast, seated in dhyanasana on a double lotus base, the right hand lowered in bhumisparsa mudra and the left above his lap holding a separately cast alms bowl. His richly pleated monastic robe is draped over both shoulders and cascades in voluminous folds. The exquisite face with heavy-lidded eyes below gently arched, remarkably wide eyebrows. Centered by an urna above full lips forming a benevolent smile, flanked by long, pierced, rectangular earlobes. The hair arranged in tight curls surmounted by a domed ushnisha with a distinctive four-petaled bud finial (see fig. 2).Provenance: From a noted Hungarian private collection, by repute acquired in Central Asia between 1950 and 1960, thence by descent in the same family.Condition: Excellent condition, fully commensurate with age. The base possibly resealed a long time ago. Some wear and casting irregularities. Small nicks, minor dents, and light surface scratches. Fine, naturally grown patina overall. Remnants of ancient pigments and old varnish.Weight: 1,668 gDimensions: Height 20.6 cmThis fine and distinctive sculpture of Shakyamuni Buddha, created during a period that marks both the revival of Buddhism in Tibet and a formative phase in Tibetan Buddhist art, has arguably more in common with Buddha images of North India and Central Asia from the previous 500 years than with those produced during the subsequent millennia of Tibetan sculpture. The face's blend of Indian and Tibetan features results in a countenance of confident nobility. Its distinct modeling makes this gilt bronze a rather singular depiction of Shakyamuni Buddha from Tibet, while at the same time wonderfully encapsulating the archaism of Tibetan art at a pivotal moment of its history.Produced between 1081-93, the murals of Drathang correlate to the present lot. Borrowings from the Pala-Sena style are apparent throughout. For example, while the present Shakyamuni's handsome face has a squarer, more Tibetan physiognomy than Buddhist bronzes made in India around the 11th century, his mouth, eyes, and brow mimic features of the Pala style – a combination present throughout the host of bodhisattvas painted at Drathang. Compare the treatment of the plump lower lip and recessed rounded corner of the smile of a painted Maitreya (see fig. 1). The present Shakyamuni also adopts the undulating upper lid of Maitreya's eye, as well as his sinuous brow with upturned ends. The idiosyncratic sculpture and painting created in Central Tibet during the 11th century embrace contemporary doctrinal and stylistic innovation while also celebrating the Buddhism that was practiced in Tibet when the religion was first introduced. As such, this Buddha provides a rare glimpse into the formative period of the Second Diffusion, when Tibet revived its patronage of Buddhism.Literature comparison: Compare a related but larger Central Tibetan gilt bronze seated Buddha Shakyamuni, dated to the 12th century, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 2012.458; and a closely related Central Tibetan gilt bronze seated Buddha Shakyamuni, dated c. 11th century, in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, accession number AC1996.26.1.Auction result comparison: Compare a closely related Central Tibetan gilt copper-alloy standing Buddha, dated 11th-12th century, 81.5 cm high, at Bonhams New York in Indian, Himalayan & Southeast Asian Art on 23 September 2021, lot 1204, bought-in at an estimate of USD 800,000-1,200,000.
