*Leicestershire Manuscript Survey. A manuscript survey entitled 'An Exact and Perfect Survey of the Lordship of Bringhurst in the County of Leicester, being taken and admeasured by the Purch of 16. 1/2. foot, according to the Statute. De Terris mensurandis, by Vincent Wing Supervisor, Octob: 1658', ink on paper, 11 leaves (half-title, title, text, final 2 leaves blank), half-title torn with loss and laid down, large tear to title affecting blank areas and border only, several text leaves torn across without loss and leaves strengthened on foremargins, stitched and rolled in a contemporary vellum sheet with original ties intact, contemporary manuscript surveying notes to vellum inner surface, 4to (text leaves 20 x 15cm unrolled) Vincent Wing (1619-1668), English astrologer, astronomer and land surveyor. Born in North Luffenham, Rutland, he was a highly accomplished mathematician and by the age of 20 he was already a professional land surveyor, almanac-maker and astrologer. He is now chiefly remembered as an astronomer and was notable as a champion of the new astronomical systems of Copernicus and Tycho Brahe. However, it was mostly through his work as a land surveyor that he made his living and, in 1664, he published 'The Art of Surveying'. This manuscript survey gives a rare insight into his practices and presentation of his work. It refers to an open plan field system with the strips of land held by various tenants; a mixture of freehold and copyhold, as the land in Bringhurst was not enclosed until 1804. Tenant names include Sir John Norwich (freehold land) and Richard Green (freehold and copyhold land). Although a few of his maps are known to have survived, no other of his land surveys have been located. (1)

Kate Greenaway studied art at the Islington School, Heatherley's and at the Slade under Legros, and began to exhibit at the RA in 1877. In the same year she began to work for Edmund Evans, the printer and publisher, who recognised her talent for capturing a world of child-like innocence and Regency charm. She admired the work of Stothard and was a contemporary of Randolph Caldecott, whom she became friendly with, and Walter Crane. Ruskin liked her work, but although he was often lavish with his praise, his criticism could be harsh. Ruskin encouraged Kate to do nature studies in watercolour, as well as larger-scale watercolours, but her attempts to follow his advice were less than successful, and her forte remained her meticulous small-scale watercolours of whimsical children playing in an idyllic countryside, with their delicate colouring and enchanting evocation of the rural life of earlier times. *Italy, Enrico Bruni (died 1509), secretary to Pope Alexander VI and Archbishop of Taranto from 1498, bronze medal attributed to Donato Bramante, bust right, rev., nostrvm est volenti servit (“our wish is to serve”), an hour glass, 46mm (Hill 663 = Arm. III, 174, A), pierced, a very fine contemporary cast, extremely rare Ex Bibliothèque d’un Érudit Bibliophile – Pierre Jammes collection, Sotheby Paris, 12-13 October 2010, lot 245 part. This piece belongs to a group of Roman medals formerly given to Caradosso Foppa but re-attributed by Luke Syson in Currency of Fame (1994, see pp 113-115 for his arguments) to the great Italian architect Donato Bramante. The pieces concerned are the three varieties of medals of Julius II (two of which are considered to be foundation medals of St. Peter’s), the present type of medal of Enrico Bruni and, above all, the medal of Bramante himself, now proposed as a self-portrait – and all relate in some way to Bramante’s work on St. Peter’s. Stylistically they stand apart from Caradosso’s Milanese medals of the Sforzas. In 1507 Enrico Bruni laid the foundation stones for three of the four piers that support the columns bearing the weight of the dome of St. Peter’s. Hill records the only specimen known to him, which was acquired for the British Museum (through the National Art Collections Fund) from the R.C. Fisher sale at Sotheby on 10th May 1921, lot 9 and it is this same piece that is cited by Armand – hence the 1921 catalogue describing it as “appears to be unique”; it sold for 60. In addition to that and the present medal, another was sold by Münzen und Medaillen, Auction 90, 14 June 2000, lot 412. All three examples are pierced and have identical diameters of 46mm.
