* DOROTHY JOHNSTONE ARSA (SCOTTISH 1892 - 1980),BOUQUET IN AN ITALIAN JARoil on canvas, signed and dated 1978, titled versoimage size 62cm x 46cm, overall size 77cm x 62cm Framed and under glass.Label verso: Royal Scottish Academy Exhibition 1978. Note: Dorothy Johnstone was a pioneer of women’s art in the early 20th century; she was the star student at Edinburgh College of Art, graduating in 1912. Not long after the new College was created out of the old Trustees Academy. Johnstone was clearly aware of contemporary developments in Paris, and certainly, the College wasn't cut off from artistic European trends. Her older contemporaries in Edinburgh included the Scottish Colourists Peploe and Cadell. Although their example might have influenced her work, in reality, it was a woman artist who seemed to liberate both her style and palette, Laura Knight exhibited eleven pictures at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1916. Significantly too she had already shown a picture there in 1911 when Johnstone was still a student. It was called On the Rocks, a title that could fit several of Knight's marvellous paintings from that time of girls, rocks and the sea on the Cornish coast. The artist's seaside paintings were particularly vivid. For instance, A Dark Pool, housed in the Laing Art Gallery, depicts a girl in a bright orange dress standing beneath a vast blue sky and sea. When it came to colour, Knight acknowledged the impact of the Scottish artist Charles Mackie (1862–1920). Through his friendship with Paul Sérusier, the artist had close links to the French painters working alongside Gauguin at the turn of the century. Johnstone has works in many major public collections and her work is rare to the market.

JEAN LURÇAT (1892-1966) FOR ATELIER GOUBELY BELZÉBUTH, CIRCA 1960 coloured wools, woven signature LURÇAT and GG monogram, sewn label verso(170cm x 120cm)Footnote: Note: French artist and weaver Jean Lurçat is widely credited for the revival of contemporary tapestry. Studying in Paris, he was very familiar with the Cubism and Expressionism movements, becoming enmeshed in the circles of Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Henri Matisse. His earliest work incorporated abstracted forms in a colourful palette, clearly derived from his contemporaries. Though he initially worked as a painter, Lurçat became intrigued by tapestry after learning more its history, and downfall as an authentic art form. During the Renaissance, many artworks by painters such as Raphael were re-created as tapestries. As a result, traditional weaving techniques were applied in ways which set out to copy painterly effects of colouring and shading. Lurçat firmly believed that tapestry and paintings were two separate entities, distinguished by the fact that a tapestry is often custom made for the wall on which it is displayed, and thereby works in unison with the surrounding architecture to transform the space it inhabits. He set out to create original and striking compositions; inspired by medieval bestiaries, his work often features mythical beasts and creatures that fill the space entirely. As in the present lot, the central animal dominates and is captured in the midst of movement: entwined with a vivid mass of leafy foliage, creating an incredibly dynamic work. By embracing the origins of tapestry, adopting bold colour palettes and unique energetic compositions, Lurçat helped restore the integrity of a lost art form and re-positioned it as a respected and valued medium of contemporary art.

HERBERT HORNE (1864-1916) FOR THE CENTURY GUILD 'PRAISE OF THE SOUL', RARE FABRIC PANEL, CIRCA block-printed velveteen, manufactured by Simpson & Godlee, Swinton, Manchester, later framed(panel 112cm x 80cm)Footnote: Literature: Livingstone, K. et al., C.F.A. Voysey: Arts and Crafts Designer, V&A Publishing, London, 2016, p. 65, pl. 79 illus. Parry, L. British Textiles from 1850 to 1900 V&A 1993, pl.103 illus. Note: Herbert Horne was a writer, architect, designer and member of the Century Guild. He was apprenticed to Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo in 1883 and the two were business partners from 1885 to 1890. The Century Guild was established in 1883 by A. H. Mackmurdo and Selwyn Image with several others, including Horne. This design is one of the most recognisable designs produced by the Century Guild. Known as 'Angel with Trumpet' or 'Praise of the Soul' it was exhibited at a number of exhibitions for the Century Guild. Not all contemporary critics were impressed, one reviewer of the 1897 Manchester Royal Jubilee exhibition in the Journal of Decorative Art described it as 'at the best a very weak effort'. Nevertheless, it is now seen as exemplifying the Guild's swirling designs that pre-empted the Art Nouveau era. As well as velveteen it was also produced as printed cotton. The two differ in one detail; in the cotton, the angel's halo contains a cross (usually signifying Jesus Christ), in the present velveteen example it has a dot, which may suggest that Horne amended the design, and that the velveteen was produced after the cotton.

* STUART LUKE GATHERER (SCOTTISH b. 1971),THE RED FLOWER RINGoil on canvas, signedimage size 80cm x 101cm, overall size 97cm x 119cm Framed.Note: Stuart Luke Gatherer was born in England in 1971 to Scottish and Dutch parents. He was brought up in the Eastern Highlands of Scotland, and attended Edinburgh College of Art from where he graduated in 1995 with an MA Honours degree in Fine Art. He has had hugely successful shows in London, New York and Scotland with an ever-widening following of collectors, and with an escalating commercial value he is firmly established as one of Scotland’s most exciting young painters, building on the classical tradition of figurative painting to develop his own unique style. Gatherer produces dramatic compositions of figurative art that reflect his debt to the old masters. Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Vermeer, Rubens and Degas are listed as strong influences, but although his work is informed by these and other past masters, Gatherer is firmly dedicated to exploring and expressing themes and subjects that are relevant in today’s world. His paintings entice the viewer to interact with contemporary scenes from the vantage point of an unseen onlooker. This creates a psychological ambiguity that is emphasised by strong forms and colours modelled in dramatic light and shade. "The Red Flower Ring" is, so far as we can ascertain, the largest and most impressive example of Stuart Luke Gatherer's work to appear at auction, anywhere.

* GRAEME WILCOX (SCOTTISH b. 1967),BLURRY HEADoil on canvas, signed and titled versoimage size 37.5cm x 28.5cm, overall size 52cm x 43cm Framed.Provenance: McTear's, November 2017. Note: After graduating from Glasgow School of Art in 1993, Wilcox continues to prosper as a painter based in Glasgow. He exhibits regularly in solo shows and group exhibitions throughout the UK and Europe. Recent work depicts people and events experienced in public spaces around the city. These paintings show figures engaged in ambiguous actions in half-remembered spaces. These situations and scenes have lodged in the memory due to some resonance or poignancy that can't quite be dismissed. The resulting paintings are partly an attempt to balance a sense of stillness with a sense of movement; a tension that hopefully generates a heightened feeling of the strangeness of everyday life and those around us. Graeme has collaborated on a number of multimedia projects with Mischief-la-bas-performance group and with other artists, culminating in projects at the Arches and Tramway in Glasgow and the Albany Theatre in London. He has also organised two large scale mural projects in collaboration with the East End Community Arts for Glasgow Health Board and devised and ran "Face to Face" photography project in Glasgow. This Arts Council funded project culminated in a temporary public artwork at the East End Festival in Glasgow. In 2011 he completed a prestigious portrait commission for the newly opened Conway Hall in London. Graeme's work is held in private collections in Europe, the USA and Canada and in public collections in Petrezovodsk, Russia and the Gulf State of Qatar. He is also held in the Corporate Collection of the Royal Bank of Scotland, Edinburgh. The most recent example of Graeme Wilcox's work we have offered was "On the Same Page" (a 112 x 102 cm oil on canvas) which was sold in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 28th March 2021, lot 722 for £5000 (hammer).

* ALEXANDER GOUDIE RP RGI (SCOTTISH 1933 - 2004),IN THE STUDIOmixed media on paper, signedimage size 64cm x 49cm, overall size 82cm x 66cm Mounted, framed and under glass.Note: Alexander Goudie was born in 1933 at Paisley and, as a child, showed a prodigious talent for drawing. He studied at Glasgow School of Art when William Armour was head of drawing and painting and David Donaldson was the ubiquitous influence. Goudie, as a student at Glasgow, demonstrated his extraordinary ability. He received the Somerville Shanks Prize for Composition and, later, his draughtsmanship and sense of colour was recognized with the award of the Newbery Medal. As a young artist, he grew up admiring three great masters, Sir John Lavery, George Henry and James Guthrie; all artists who had bridged the gap between Glasgow and Paris. It was these artists’ glorious virtuoso control of oil paint that appealed to Goudie, as well as their genre and realist subject matter. Alexander Goudie was elected a member of the Glasgow Art Club in 1956 and a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1970. He painted a portrait of the Queen for the Caledonian Club, London (1992/93), and exhibited widely, showing at Harari and Johns, in London, the Fine Art Society, Glasgow, and the Musee de la Faience, in Quimper. Sir Timothy Clifford, former Director of the National Galleries of Scotland, said: ''At his best, Goudie could draw better than any of his rivals in Scotland. There was magic and vision in his art and, I expect, history will be kind to him.'' Collections: 79 of Goudie's paintings are held in UK public collections including at Glasgow Museums & Galleries, The Hunterian, Rozelle House Galleries, Paisley Museum & Art Galleries and The Fleming Collection (London). Numerous prestigious corporate collections in the UK and France and in private collections around the world. She attained a degree in Geography at Glasgow University and went on to train as a teacher. Iain Macnab had been Principal at Heatherley's Art School (1925 - 1940) and then went on to be founding Principal of the hugely influential Grosvenor School of Modern Art. Sheila's London influences and Glasgow School foundations evolved into a distinctive and individual style. She usually worked "en plein air" and her work is semi abstract. She focused mainly on landscape where her training as a geographer, allowed her to use her understanding of land formation, the delicate balance of the seasons and the interaction between Man and the environment. Her uncle's concept of "rhythm" is evident in Sheila's work and remained a constant throughout her career. She painted in Scotland, Spain. France and Italy and exhibited widely especially in Glasgow, Edinburgh, London and Newcastle. Her work appeared frequently at the Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Glasgow Institute, Paisley Art Institute annual exhibitions and at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (London).
