* MOIRA BEATY (SCOTTISH 1922 - 2015), DISTANT HILLS oil on board, signedframedimage size 25cm x 35cm, overall size 34cm x 44cm Note: Moira went to Glasgow School of Art in 1939 where her contemporaries included Joan Eardley and Margot Sandeman. These three young women were regarded by their lecturers as the brightest stars of their generation. After one year as a student she was recruited to Bletchley Park where she worked as a code breaker, one of Churchill's 'corkscrew thinkers'. She returned to GSA in 1947 to complete her studies. Moira's enduring talent was recognised again in 2014 at the age of 92 with a sell-out exhibition in Kirkcudbright. Moira Beaty was a resolute and determined woman who was an integral part of the famous group at Bletchley Park who did much to aid the Allies' victory in the Second World War. She worked in Hut 8 where Alan Turing and Peter Twinn set up the Naval Enigma Code. Beaty was responsible to Twinn - the first mathematician to be recruited to Bletchley. ''I discovered something,'' Beaty modestly remarked years later, ''a code within a code. I was immediately moved to within the codebreakers and became a cryptographer working on the German Secret Service codes.'' The Twinn team was involved in breaking the secretive Abwehr codes which were even more complicated than the ordinary military messages. The information this provided to the Allies in such major operations as the desert campaign, the D-Day landings and the sinking of the battleship Tirpitz proved vital to the war effort. Her first solo exhibition was at the Open Eye Gallery in Edinburgh in 1979 and at the Collins Gallery in Glasgow. Her works were also seen at the Cadogan Contemporary Gallery in London and around Dumfries - notably at the Gracefield Arts Centre. In 2001 Gracefield held a major retrospective exhibition of both Moira and Stuart Beaty's works, entitled Full Circle. In 2014 Beaty officially opened the Kirkcudbright Summer Art Exhibition: Glasgow Girls 1920 - 1960, and held a solo exhibition in the town's Harbour Cottage Gallery. Both exhibitions were hugely popular and, at 92, Moira Beaty was still making a strong impression and gaining new collectors.

Frances Mabel Hollams (British, 1877-1963)'Buster', 'Shandy', and 'Bluett' - Dalmatians signed and dated 'F.M.HOLLAMS/'36' (lower right), inscribed with dogs' names (lower edge)oil on panel41 x 54cm (16 1/8 x 21 1/4in).Footnotes:Frances Mabel Hollams was an animal painter who specialised in canine and equestrian portraits. She studied at the Frank Calderon School of Animal Painting in South Kensington, and at the Atelier Julian in Paris, the contemporary 'mecca' for animal painters. One of Hollams' trademarks was to paint the dog or horse on board, sometimes varnished, with the grain of the wood showing through, and invariably with no background and the animal's name inscribed on the board. She worked with great speed in order to satisfy her many commissions. She is alleged to have rarely discussed money for a painting, but her butler always waited to bid farewell to clients with a silver salver on which they were expected to place £25 in cash. In 1899, Hollams was elected an associate of the Society of Women Artists and by 1902 her qualities had been quickly recognised and she made a full member. She exhibited extensively including at the Royal Academy (8); the Society of Women Artists (19); and at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool (2). In June 1929 she had 'A Loan Exhibition of Oil Paintings of Horse and Dogs', of 66 paintings, at the New Bond Street Walker's Galleries. It was a remarkable tribute, with 54 paintings being kindly lent by many titled and wealthy owners of show champions, pets and famous kennels. In 1937, the New Bond Street dealers Arthur Ackermann & Son paid tribute to Hollams again with 'A Loan Exhibition of Oil Paintings of Horses and Dogs' in which 38 paintings were shown. Hollams' patrons included the Earls of Sefton, Beatty, and Cornwallis. Lord Cornwallis was the Master of the Linton Beagles, and she painted him with his beagles. She also painted for the royals, one of her last oils, executed in 1963, was that of Princess Alexandra Dutchess of Kent with a young friend on horseback. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Frederick Thomas Daws (British, 1878-1956)'Meurice' of Mannerhead - A Very Fine Poodle signed and dated 'FT DAWS/50' (lower right), inscribed ''Meurice' of Mannerhead' (lower left) oil on canvas board32.5 x 40.5cm (12 13/16 x 15 15/16in).Footnotes:Thomas Frederick Daws was born in London on the 2nd of October 1878. He is particularly notable for his bold, colourful palette, and his use of colour and thickly applied strokes. His technique created striking styles and produced paintings of a different character and more modern form than his contemporaries in the world of dog painting. Daws studied at the Lambeth School of Art. From 1896 at the age of just 18, he exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy – he went on to exhibit a further 11 works at the academy. He also exhibited at The Paris Salon; the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts; the Royal Institute of Oil Painters; the Walker Gallery in Liverpool; and at the Royal Society of British Artists. Perhaps Daws is most famous for his many paintings of Mrs Campbell-Inglis' Poodles from the famous Wimbledon Mannerhead Kennels, which Daws produced over 20 years. As with his contemporary, Rueben Ward Binks, he painted many of the prize dogs of well-known dog fanciers.Perhaps less well known are Daws's sculptures in bronze, including commissions again for Mrs Campbell-Inglis. He was a master of canine anatomy and his bronzes, while little known, are important records of top-winning show dogs, as are his paintings. In 1930, Daws became the main artist designing a range of porcelain champion Crufts winning dogs for Royal Doulton, which were issued from 1931 to 1968. This included the English Springer Crufts Champion, 'Dry Toast'. His paintings were also reproduced on a series of thirty-six post cards for the Spratts Dog Food Company. The Samoyed, 'Champion Loga of the Arctic', painted for Miss Marion Keyte Perry was published as the cover to the Christmas supplement to 'Our Dogs'. The painting is now in the collection of the Kennel Club together with others by the artist. His works depicting the Afghans and Mannerhead Poodles can be seen in the collection of the American Kennel Club. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

2009 canvas, Caroline Shotton tries a different approach to her love of cows in this limited edition Giclee On Boxed Canvas titled ' It Must Be Love ' by masking the cows inside a heart.  A poem moving from the centre of one heart off to the other side in a scrolling design adds to the beautiful composition. The poem reads ' as soon as I wake up every night every day I know that it's moo I need to take the blues away '.   Established British artist Caroline Shotton creates whimsical, irreverent pieces positively rammed with extra helpings of delicious humour, yet simultaneously laced with sophisticated overtones of impressionism and surrealism; which hit the contemporary artistic spot, time after time and are as quintessentially British as they come. For quintessentially British read, quirky, bordering on eccentric, laced with irony and other departments of mirth. And her predominant subject matter? The visual text that’s made Shotton a headline act on the UK’s a la mode art scene? Cows. Or bovines to afford them their correct, agricultural terminology.  Signed to edge. Limited edition 214/295. Measures approximately 47cm x 76cm.

A CORAL, ENAMEL AND DIAMOND BLACKAMOOR BROOCH, BY CARTIER, CIRCA 1935 the black enamelled bust wearing seed pearl earrings, on a reeded gold neck and wearing a cream enamel turban with coral corallium rubrum highlight and rose-cut diamond detail, mounted in 18K gold, signed Cartier Paris, numbered. 3.5cm long, 11.1 grams grossThe house of Cartier was founded in Paris in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier. A family venture soon saw the growth of Cartier and the expansion to London and New York, with subsequent generations taking the helm. Cartier has established itself as one of the world's preeminent crafters of high-end, modern, and vintage jewellery. Its watches have adorned the wrists of celebrities and royalty alike, with King Edward VII of England once referring to Cartier as the jeweller of kings and the king of jewellers. Cartier's extensive collections are known to embody revival, Art Deco, and more contemporary styles, making them a sought-after commodity for generations both past and present. Jeanne Toussaint was made Creative Director for jewellery in 1933 and she continued to work for Cartier until her retirement in 1970. The working relationship between Louis Cartier and Toussaint was very successful, with Cartier imparting his knowledge of gemstones, diamonds, settings and technique, and Toussaint bringing her joie de vivre, relentless creativity and eye for contemporary fashions. By the time she retired from Cartier in 1970, Toussaint had established her legacy as an artistic visionary; always experimenting, exploring and creating jewels for those with a worldly outlook and an eye on the future. Cartier is a notable creator of pieces depicting elaborate Blackamoor heads, which had been introduced by the Venetian form of Nardi. Blackamoor jewellery, also known as Moretti jewellery, was particularly popular during the 17th and 18th centuries and it is believed that it was originally created as amulets to ward off evil, or invasion by the Moors into Italy. Cartier first released their Blackamoor brooches in the early 1930’s. Blackamoor brooches depict black figures within the design, they are typically male with a head covering, usually a turban and covered in rich jewels and gold leaf. Early examples often have European racial features, apart from the colour. They are typically enamelled, carved from ebony or painted black to contrast with the bright colours of the embellishments. Depictions may only represent the head, or head and shoulders, facing the viewer in a symmetrical pose. The brooch on sale is a lovely example of a typical Blackamoor brooch, made of black enamel, detailing a white enamel turban and surrounded by precious gems, including coral, seed pearls and diamond. The head faces the viewer in a symmetrical pose and sits on a yellow gold reeded neck.
