Mrs James Tennant Exhibited:Zurich, Galerie Aktuaryus, June 1934 Literature:Monthly Journal of the Aktuaryus Gallery, 17 June, 1934, ZurichArthur Roessler, Radio Vienna, Österreichische Rundfunkzeitschrift, Report, vol. 12, no. 35, 22.5, 1936, p.8Cornelia Cabuk, Stella Rollig, Christian Huemer, Carl Moll, Monograph and Catalogue Raisonne, Belvedere, Vienna, 2020, p. 255, no. GE 478, illus. in black & white (recorded with Belvedere no. Ex 43154) Rediscovered portrait by Viennese successionist Carl Moll, hidden away in the private collection of Swiss arts patron Oskar Reinhart comes to market for the very first time. Oskar Reinhart was born in Winterthur, Switzerland in 1885. His father Theodor Reinhart (1849-1919) worked as a textile merchant running Volkart Brothers, which was founded by his wife's family, and facilitated the trade of cotton across the continent mainly from India. Theodor was an active art collector and devoted to supporting the careers of promising artists. By the age of 39 Oskar, inspired by his father, retired from the family firm to focus on building his already established art collection. Reinhart travelled across Europe visiting museums and private collectors devoting his time to art patronage. Reinhart purchased villa Am Römerholz in his hometown which was to become his own private gallery to house his collection as well as his private residence. In 1940 Reinhart donated the Austrian, German and Swiss works of art from his collection to the town of Winterthur which was housed from 1951 in the Museum Oskar Reinhart, now within the Kunst Museum including pieces by Caspar David Friedrich and Adolph Menzel. The rest of the collection was bequeathed to the Swiss Confederation including his home in 1958 and this opened to the public in 1970 and is still available to visit today. The original bequest included over five hundred paintings and several thousand drawings.Reinhart was particularly drawn to French Impressionists and he enjoyed mixing old masters with modern masters arranging displays in order of form and colour rather than period. It was the focus on colour and light used by the Impressionists that sparked Reinharts' interest. Reinhart was conscious of seeking talent and artists with potential in order to support and encourage their careers. The collection on display at Am Römerholz includes works by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Vincent Van Gogh, Edouard Manet, Paul Cezanne and Alfred Sisley amongst a selection of old masters such as Pieter Brughel the Elder. Carl Moll was born in Vienna in 1861 to Julius Johann Franz Moll and Maria Magdalena Rosina Schmid. Inspired by his uncle Karl Schmid Moll enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna in 1880. Moll studied under Christian Gripenkerl and went on to become the assistant to Emil Jakob Schindler. Shortly after Schindler's death in 1892 Moll married the German actress Anna Sofie Bergen, the widow of Schindler. Significantly Carl Moll was one of the cofounders of the Viennese Secession alongside Josef Hoffman and Gustav Klimt. The Secession was founded by a group of Austrian painters, writers and architects in 1897 to oppose the conservatism of traditional art academies and the forumlaic teachings of the Vienna Academy of the Arts. The group sought to encourage promotion of all arts and creative thinking looking towards the future rather than themes from the past by supporting contemporary artists, both Austrian and international combining ideas from artists and designers. This movement sparked the formation of modern art in Vienna which can be seen to flourish at the turn of the century. In 1905 a number of artists broke away from the secession including Moll who went on to establish the Gallery Miethke. Moll's work is full of light and freshness. He is renowned for mesmerising landscapes and intimate still lifes. The viewer is immediately struck by the sense of harmony created across the composition through the balance of colour and attention to detail. Moll uses the shadows caused by the light hitting the trees to create depth, leading the viewer along the pathway and into the canvas. The broad fluid brushstrokes draw influence from the French neo-impressionists whose work Moll came to admire. The present lot has not been seen on the open market since its creation in the 1930s. The work is included in the catalogue raisonne published in association with the Belvedere museum, its location listed as unknown with a black and white illustration until now. Recorded in the catalogue raisonné are four other works by Carl Moll all depicting olive groves during the early 1930s. The locations include Rapallo and Volterra in Italy and Provence in France including specifically Sanary-sur-Mer which may be the subject matter of the present lot. Extensive correspondence between Carl Moll and Oskar Reinhart is stored in the archives of the Kunst Museum Winterthur.   Condition Report: One pin hole to the upper left and lower left corner. A LARGE RENAISSANCE ROCK CRYSTAL INTAGLIO ATTRIBUITED TO VALERIO BELLI. ALLEGORICAL SCENE WITH SEATED HERO AND ASSOCIATED EMBLEMA. 16th century36x47,5x3 mmThis fine rock crystal intaglio is attributed to the Renaissance gem engraver Valerio Belli (c. 1468 – 1546). The intaglio depicts a seated nude hero offering a statue of Nike to a triumphal ‘victory’ column or cippus surmounted by a sphere and a pile of arms and armor. It is referenced as Tassie-Raspe impression 7846 and has been identified as a model for early Wedgwood works described as an ‘Offering to Victory’ as well as related Matthew Boulton ormolu plaquettes. Although the intaglio is unsigned, there are many physical and stylistic similarities to various works by and attribuited to Valerio Belli, particularly works commissioned by Pope Clement VII. The victorious hero in the scene, depicted with curly hair and sideburns, resembles the Duke of Florence Alessandro de’ Medici, the suspected son of Pope Clement VII. Duke Alessandro had to rumored fathers, one was Lorenzo II de'Medici, later Pope Clement VII who was Valerio Belli's most important patron. Although his lineage cannot be confirmed, historians generally regard Alessandro's father to be Pope Clement VII due the contemporary accounts as well as a Alessandro's lifelong favoritism by Clement VII, including his appointemnt as the Duke of Florence. The Medici dynasty was in perennial conflict with Republican factions in Florence, rebelling against Medici control over the city in 1527.As a consequence of an alliance between Charles V and Clement VII, Papal and Imperial armies laid siege to Florence for 10 months, and Alessandro de Medici was installed on the throne of Venice in 1530 and subsequently made a hereditary Duke by Charles V in 1532, ending the Florentine Republic, and cementing Medici control over the city. The Medici, who were very conscious of their depictions, made numerous efforts to portray the young Duke Alessandro as a warrior, Roman emperor and hero in paintings, sculpture as well as medals, intaglios and cameos attribuited to Domenico de'Polo. Furthermore, a rock crystal vessel, attribuited to Valerio Belli, depicts both Pope Clement VII and Alessandro, demonstrating the intimate connection between these two historical figures. The Duke Alessandro was assassinated in 1537 by his cousin. This rock crystal intaglio, characterized by an exceptional limpidity, was originally mounted in a brooch designed by Marc Koven during the mid 20th century. The rock crystal has an engraved border around the scene and stylistic parallels to several similar Renaissance rock crystals & medals commissioned by the Medici family (particularly the Medici Vase in the Louvre and the famous Medici Chest in the Uffizi). The rock crystal has similar dimensions to valerio Belli's documented and attribuited works, corresponding closely in size to "Herakles between Minerva and Venus, inscribed Valerius VAF (4.7 cm by 3.8 cm), Mutius Scaevola inscribed CONSTANTIOR (4.7 cm by 3.7 cm). It has also a corresponding thickness (3 mm) to the oval rock crystal depicting a sacrifice scene in the British Museum and the rock crystal depictiong the Judgement of Paris in the V&A Museum, both attribuited to Valerio Belli. This rock crystal intaglio, although undocumented in the literature, has a number of clear parallels in works attributed to Valerio Belli in major texts on the 16th century engraver. The scene is typical of Medici coinage from the period, specifically Cavino’s posthumous medal of Giuliano II de’ Medici and is believed to be a depiction of the later assassinated Duke Alessandro de’ Medici. Some features, particularly the cippus with an attached bow and quiver of arrows parallel those identified in an intaglio of Herakles being crowned by Minerva, formerly in the collection of Peter Paul Rubens and later Baron Philip von Stosch, attribuited to Valerio Belli. The composition with a figure seatd in an elegant pose, with one or both legs outstretched, is common in many Belli's compositions. For comparisons: Tassie n. 7846. The intaglio is described in Tassie 7846 as: “*_________ __________ A young hero sitting without arms, with the statue of Victory in his left hand, before a cippus on which his arms are suspended. It may be called Achilles victorious, in his retirement. For such subjects see the article Achilles and Mars in repose.”; There are some minor differences between the rock crystal and the Tassie impression which appear to be the result of an incomplete transfer. It is very likely that Tassie did not identify the owner of the engraved gem or the material in his text because he did not take the impression of the gem, but rather received the impression from another collector or performed his impression from an unidentified impression. The absence of the intaglio border in the Tassie impression suggests the engraved gem was previously mounted in a brooch or pendant which covered the border when the original impression was performed. Two thin spears appear in the rock crystal version, it is only possible to see the traces of a thin line representing one spear in the Tassie impression. The shield also has an additional thin line in the rock crystal. Additionally, small pieces of hair which form the side-burns on the face of the figure are also not visible. Because these differences are very minor features and all other details appear consistent, it is very likely that this Tassie impression derives from the original rock crystal above Unsigned - Attributed - Valerio Belli, Seated Virtue with Fame and a Genius, oval bronze plaquette, 50 x 39mm (Lewis D. in Valerio Belli Vicentino (2000), p. 134, 100 – and also p. 331, 125; Bange 812; Warren, Ashmolean Museum Plaquettes, 243); Tassie 7853. Ralph Hunter-Menzies Redacted (Four), 2023 Collage Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About The relationship between deliberate and accidental marks has always interested Ralph Hunter-Menzies. His paintings revolve around the ideas of tension and juxtaposition. Drawing from vernacular forms found in the urban landscape, his work focuses on mark-making which he reduces to its most basic elements: composition and appropriation, creation and destruction. The artist often reuses old canvases and continues to work on their surfaces, using a combined array of painterly techniques such as blasted paint and printing, as well as experimenting with dyes. Influenced by the DIY culture, he cuts, composes and reassembles the pieces of fabric using a sewing machine. The resulting compositions speak of abstraction, gesture and balance. Susannah Douglas Woman/Woman, 2023 Pencil and ink on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Susannah Douglas was born in Belfast and now lives and works in London. Working predominantly with drawing, Susannah's practice is focused on the representation of the human figure through the conventions of portraiture. How formed conventions aspire to the unique yet also promote the generic. She collects images from a range of sources; art historical examples, via photocopies; anonymous photographs uploaded to the Internet and found images. These fragments are spliced together, the poses, gestures, attire and composition are examined, repeated, reconstructed and reflect back upon themselves. Collaged material acts as reference for intricate pencil drawings, the fragility of the drawn images complicating the relationship to originality whilst maintaining the nostalgic desire for the unique hand-crafted work. Corinna Button In a Dream, 2023 Collage, acrylic, graphite and oil on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.)   About After completing a BA honours degree in painting, I pursued a printmaking postgraduate degree in the UK, where I am from. It was during this time that I was impacted by the German Expressionists, whose works, particularly in printmaking, left an indelible impression on me. I dedicated many subsequent years to developing my work in etching and other forms of printmaking. Today, printmaking continues to be a medium that intrigues me and is hugely influential in the way I approach my painting and sculpture. People are the subjects of my work and I am intrigued by moments that, despite initially appearing quite commonplace, are (for me) charged with great significance and meaning. My inspiration is drawn from experiences or predicaments I encounter in daily life, such as social gatherings, images from social media and words from a song or a poem. All these generate ideas for themes that I can build upon, "dress-up" and weave into my work. I compose figures either in groupings or as a single figure or just a face. My aim is not to create exact likenesses, but rather to create prototypical or archetypal figures whose personality or identity is both partly exposed and partly hidden beneath the surface. Everything about the way I work (both technique and subject) is motivated by the desire to reveal or "bring something to light." Thus, my process involves layering then scraping back, building then excavating; otherwise, peeling back layers to "carve out" and reveal something hidden beneath the surface. Caitlin Flood-Molyneux Still Life, 2023 Ink on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Caitlin Flood-Molyneux is a contemporary Welsh Artist based in South Wales. Their artistic practice investigates the relationship between pop culture imagery and the way in which we attach emotion and memory to images and use this to narrate their subjective experiences of hardship. Gavin Dobson Posing in His Pants, 2023 Oil on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Gavin is an artist based in East London. Originally from the North East of England, he trained in Fine Art at Middlesex University specialising in painting. Alongside his painting, Gavin is also an experienced screen printer. Gavin tends to keep his paintings loose and expressive, using fluid movements and textures to create engaging and lively pieces which thoughtfully lead the viewer to a chosen narrative. In recent years Gavin's practice has focused in exploring homosexuality and the various subcultures which surround it, looking into the expectations and stereotypes which gay men face and how in turn this can affect one's mental health. His paintings are loose and expressive tackling the emotional highs and lows of being a gay man in contemporary Britain. Queer culture exists beyond a week at Pride and it has a proud and sadly unearthed history which in turn has affected notions surrounding masculinity/ femininity and indeed what it means to be gay. Maddie Yuille Study for a Bather II, 2023 Oil paint, ink and pencil on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Maddie Yuille (b. 1988) is a visual artist based in London. She creates paintings that explore the embodied experience of being in natural spaces, working with varied media including oil paint, ink, and oil crayon on canvas. Her paintings hover between the figurative and abstract, depicting bodies that emerge from and meld with their environment as a means of critiquing the idea that "nature" is a realm distinct and separate from human lives. Yuille is inspired by a re-imagining of the stories of women historically accused of witchcraft, and paints utopian images where these women are instead free to take pleasure in their surroundings - swimming, resting, and tending to one another, or else content in their solitude. The exploration of materiality is crucial to her practice; each painting is an exploration in to how paint can visualise sensory experience. Gabriela Szulman Observation Point, 2023 Acrylic paint and collage on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About I grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but South London has been my home for many years now. Originally trained in in ceramics at Camberwell College of Art in the early 90s, after graduation I ran a ceramics studio for twelve years, supplying a number of galleries across the UK and also selling internationally. Later on I moved away from clay to explore working on paper and canvas, which led to an MA in studio printmaking from The University of Brighton in 2007. Since then I have been working as mixed-media artist, mostly in collage. My work features layered images coupled with a fair amount of bright colour and surface decoration and emerges from a fusion of painting, printmaking and found imagery. The resulting creations are often humorous and whimsical, with random connections between images. Creative inspiration comes from my growing archive of ephemera, which includes photograph albums, technical manuals, illustrated dictionaries, vintage documents, my grandmother's fashion magazines, knitting pattern books and scraps of writing among other things. The layering of found imagery and memorabilia runs across all my creations, whether they be mixed media works on canvas, collages, greeting card designs, or decorative objects. Education BA (Hons) 3-D Design, Camberwell College of Arts. MA Studio Printmaking, University of Brighton Select Exhibitions/Awards Collage Award Kanyer Art Collection, Camberwell Open Studios, Dulwich Open House Gallery Representation KIttoe Contemporary Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork I've submitted four portraits of women, three imaginary and one of a real person (me!). I took the opportunity to experiment whith the self-portrait, which was created by weaving together two prints of the same photo with a tonal variation. This is a technique that I teach in my collage classes but don't normally use in my own work, and the postcard size gave me the chance to try it out without running out of patience! The other three pieces are mixed media collages inspired by faces of women from historical paintings, either used as collage elements or, in 'Mariana', painted in gouache.   You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works. Laurence Noga Soft Green Filtered Red 2/-, 2023 Acrylic, Vintage papers and collage on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About I am interested in peripheral associations and imperfect colour relationships interplayed through an industrial and geometric aesthetic. Personal themes and undercurrents and a sense of history comes from collective and individual memories. Many of the elements in my work are from my father's collection of objects and memorabilia in his garage - hundreds of tools, sheet music, packets, washers, menus, books and photographs. Their selection and use activates an open approach reliant on the environment and experimentation, alongside a human response to the mysterious, and forgotten items and their poetic sense of history. A long term interest in the "Bauhaus' particularly Moholy Nagy, Josef Albers and Paul Klee drives the unpredictability/predictability of the colour handling. These relationships aim to disorientate the viewer, as surface facture is used translucently, or with a sudden density. The colour is often disbursed, or used in compartments, to create a deliberate, and odd depth of field. Education Wimbledon College of Art in 1981 - 4, Byam Shaw (Central St Martins) 1990 -1. I am exploring a personal iconography and phenomenology and how that can be important within both memory and place: such as the look and feel of my mother's musty sheet music collection from her time as a jazz vocalist in clubs and dance bands, or the crumpled menus (some with hand written changes) from the Caprice restaurant that my father worked at for many years. Susan Preston Still Standing, 2023 Pastel and graphite pencil on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Susan Preston is an abstract painter using oil paint and pastel. These are mobile and versatile mediums; the imagery changes through the painting process, dissolving and reforming as a layered, ambiguous space develops. Through this meditative process, the work alludes to memory traces, to the shifting spaces between presence and absence, loss and retrieval. A piece is eventually resolved when the tension between the layers and the elements on the surface draw the viewer into the space, where the painting reveals its secrets slowly; these works repay contemplation. Gavin Dobson Crouching By the Cactus, 2023 Oil on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Gavin is an artist based in East London. Laura Jane Scott Necessary Limits (Mini), 2023 Grayboard, Interior paint Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Laura Jane Scott is an artist working in minimalist, geometric abstraction and colour-field painting. Her desire for formal simplicity through geometric form and her striking use of colour enables her to produce work where painting explores a model of architectural form and where colour embodies a physical structure. The resulting work is a refined visual vocabulary of form and colour. "My aim is always to express an idea as simply and as elegantly as possible. To strip everything back to only what is necessary to communicate that idea. My work is primarily an exploration of balance, of positive and negative space, of presence and absence." Education Laura studied at Camberwell College of Arts and Ravensbourne University London. Select Exhibitions/Awards Laura's work has been exhibited widely over the past seven years in London, Edinburgh, New York and Hamburg and has featured twice in the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition. Gallery Representation Laura is represented by Kittoe Contemporary in London and frequently shows work with &Gallery in Edinburgh. She also sells work independently and accepts commissions for large scale installations. Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork Laura has submitted two works to Art on a Postcard Summer 2023. The first is a miniature of her relief series 'Necessary Limits' which explores colour, balance and form within the confines of some self-imposed boundaries. The second, 'Measured', is a minimalist painting of saturated, clean-edged shapes using colours from Laura's signature palette and the component shapes that often appear in her work.   You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works. Melanie Berman Spoon Full of Sugar, 2023 Ink, acrylic and pen on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Melanie Berman explores the language of abstraction within paintings. She draws from traditional and contemporary techniques and observations. Using the interplay of the paint and the momentum of intuitive gestures to be captured within a time and space that is relevant today. Berman is drawn to the intrinsic values of her materials whilst infusing her work with a personal language and signature palettes. She uses abstraction and colour marks as if it were a universal text full of integrity, in which she features allegories that reflect on social, ideological and emotional planes. References stem from nature, music, poetry, dance that are entwined to suggest alternative possibilities for human life. The non-objective also interests her, as she translates sound into colour and illusionistic forces of connectivity into patterns. In her poetic paintings, loud fluorescent pink or orange flicks contrast with soft, quiet tones. The colours dance amongst themselves to convey a contrasting sense of rhythmic order or disorder, adding to the joyous energy of the work. The marks could be seen as akin to genetic coding or the human perception of nature and our own ecological consciousness. They could also be compared to the pages of a journal or inner landscapes, restoring the balance of collective reasoning in society. Education BA Fashion Design 2.1 Berkshire College of Art 1980 - BA Hons UCA 2008 Select Exhibitions/Awards Most recently she exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy (2020, 2021, 2022) - Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy, London (2019, 2021, 2022). Gabriela Szulman The Naturalist, 2023 Acrylic paint and collage on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About I grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but South London has been my home for many years now. John Stark Three Quinces / Drawing, 2023 Pencil and Biro on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About John Stark emerged as an innovator in the dark undercurrent of London's contemporary art scene, integrating styles and themes from recent and past artistic traditions to form his own system of meaning. His paintings of enigmatic figures in hauntingly beautiful landscapes often reflect an ill-fated world struggling with the dissonance of spirituality, materiality, religion and science. Education John Stark graduated from Royal Academy Schools, London in 2004, and University of West England, Bristol in 2001. Select Exhibitions/Awards The artist has exhibited at the following international venues: Institute of Contemporary Arts, The Mall, London and John Moores Painting Prize - National Museums Liverpool, - Marta Herford Museum, Herford, Germany, - Berlin, Kunst Museum Bochum and Villa Jauss Kunsthaus, Oberstdorf, Germany, and The Hyundai in Seoul, South Korea. Cheri's works explore themes of animality, embodiment, wildness and strangeness, and are informed by her own detailed observations and dark imagination. Susan Preston Hover, 2023 Pastel, Graphite Pencil on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Susan Preston is an abstract painter using oil paint and pastel. Susan Preston has exhibited widely, including in Strasbourg and London. Her work is in collections in Europe, Asia and the USA. Maddie Yuille Study for a Bather I, 2023 Oil paint, ink and pencil on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Maddie Yuille (b. Ralph Hunter-Menzies Redacted (Two), 2023 Collage Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About The relationship between deliberate and accidental marks has always interested Ralph Hunter-Menzies. Education Studied fine art undergraduate at Chelsea College of Art Select Exhibitions/Awards Residency - Florence Trust, London, 2018 - 2019 Awards - Shortlisted for Exeter Contemporary Open 2017 (June 2017), Winner of the Ashhurst East London Prize (April 2017) Selected exhibitions - 2017, Exeter Contemporary Open, Phoenix Gallery, Exeter, 2017, The Unlimited Dream Company, Hannah Barry Gallery, London (curator), 2019, Sleep On The Wind (alongside Daniel Jensen and Terencio Gonzalez), The Dot Project, London (curator), Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork These works focus on the covering and removal of text and then the putting back together of those redacted forms.   You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works.
