Lot 438

Alison Jackson Camilla as Keeler Giclée hahnemühle german etching Signed on Verso & Recto 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by AOAP About Alison Jackson, a contemporary, BAFTA and multi award-winning artist, photographer and filmmaker explores the cult of celebrity - an extraordinary phenomenon manufactured by the media, publicity industries and the public figures themselves. To raise questions about this, Alison creates celebrity 'news' that appears real and plausible but isn't. She creates convincingly realistic work portraying the imagined private lives of public figures using cleverly styled lookalikes. Resemblance becomes real, and fantasy touches on the plausible. Alison creates scenes that the public have all imagined but never seen. It's an exploration of our insatiable desire to get personal with public personalities, raising questions about the power and seductive nature of imagery which incites voyeurism and our need to believe - Alison challenges our preconceptions. Alison takes portraits of (real!) famous actors, politicians and celebrities, collected by Museum collections, such as at the National Portrait Gallery, The Parliamentary Art Collection in London and SF MOMA, San Francisco amongst many others. In 2019 Alison founded and launched the photography initiative to include photography workshops, programs, competition and exhibition of A Day in Your Life/Young Artists to cultivate, nurture and celebrate the future creatives of tomorrow from under - represented, lower socio-economic, minority backgrounds, and people living with disabilities. Anyone who hasn't had a chance to showcase their talent yet - A Day in Your Life/Young Artists can provide creative lifelines but also life-changing opportunity for all ages: from 7 upwards. Alison mentors young people and is a Member of the Alumni Council for The Royal College of Art, Trustee of Chelsea Art Theatre; Ambassador to the K&C Foundation; Ambassador to the Spinal Injuries Association. Jackson supports a number of charities, including MacMillan Cancer Support, Marie-Curie, Jeans for Genes Day and Cancer Research UK amongst others. She has published numerous books including Private Confidential, by Penguin, Confidential by Taschen, Up the Aisle, Stern Private. Her work has been acquired by many public museum collections including The Parliamentary Art Collection, London; The National Portrait Gallery, London; SF MOMA, San Francisco; London; Musée de la Photographie, Charleroi, Brussels; The Frances Foundation, Paris and The International Centre of Photography amongst others. Education Royal College of Arts, University of the Arts Select Exhibitions/Awards BAFTA, Creative Circle Award, CLIO Awards, D&DA Gallery Representation National Portrait Gallery, The Parliamentary Art Collection in London and SF MOMA, San Francisco amongst many others. Harriet Porter Little Blessing Oil on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by AOAP About Harriet Porter is a London-based artist specialising in still-life oil painting, making quiet monochromatic works of solitary reflective objects. "I paint from observation, concerned with finding patterns of tone within the whole scene, focusing on the glints of light set off by shapes of shadow. I use layers of translucent glaze to build up the feeling of luminosity. The space I create is a world where nothing bad ever happens: a sparse dreamy place filled with a still, tranquil glow". Harriet's preoccupation is informed by her previous career as an art director and stylist. Working in film and photography, she found the camera increasingly frustrating. As a capturing device it became insufficient to describe the wonder with which she perceived the shimmer that constantly caught her eye. She found that painting achieved more accurate results, bypassing unwelcome photographic detail. John Simpson Willow Ink and charcoal on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by AOAP About John Simpson's prints and drawings fuse image meaning and medium to explore our relationship with the natural world. The process and examination of drawing is at the core of his practice. Often abandoning the control of the studio and working with public collaborators, he embraces an element of chaos and the natural mutations which occur in printmaking. This symbiotic process is one way in which his work looks to biology to explore our relationship with nature. The frequent use of natural materials like earth and wood reflects both the subject and the wild nature of these works. John's latest drawings and prints have their origins in a time spent exploring local woodlands with his young twin daughters whilst seeking refuge from their city apartment. These works evolved from being continuously immersed in this environment. The process and materials directly relate to the physicality and texture of these hidden spaces. He has exhibited at major UK institutions as well as internationally with solo exhibitions in London, Los Angeles and Sao Paulo. He has led interactive printmaking and drawing projects at Spike Island, Bristol and at Tate Modern in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Ken Nwadiogbu In the Wave Charcoal and acrylic on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by AOAP About Ken Nwadiogbu (b. 1994, Lagos, Nigeria) is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist, based in Lagos, Nigeria. A trained civil engineer, he soon pivoted to fine art, first embracing hyperrealism and charcoal drawing before expanding his creative horizon to more conceptual works and a wider array of techniques, including acrylic painting, sculpture and installation. His works are inspired by iconic American contemporary art figures such as J.-M. Basquiat, Kehinde Wiley, Toyin Ojih Odutola and Kerry James Marshall. On Ken's large canvases, stories superimpose themselves in multiple layers. Mixing together hyperrealism with contemporary elements, he creates ingenious, politically charged visual illusions that deploy a singular outlook, daring the audience to question their own, for "value lies in the perspective". Defending an art that can be at once smart and fun, he explores grave matters in intense colours and playful cut-outs, addressing altogether black representation and identity, displacement, and socio-political control. Popularly known as KenArt, Ken is credited for introducing the "Contemporealism" movement and was named by Guardian Life as one of the most "Outstanding Personalities" in Nigeria. In 2019, he was awarded the prestigious The Future Awards Africa in recognition of his contributions to the Nigerian arts community. A core focus for him is to inspire and encourage young creatives. He does this through public speaking and mentorship, as well as through his creative companies. He nurtures an art collective called 'Title Deed' and co-found Artists Connect NG, the largest artist gathering in Nigeria, created to foster creativity, collaboration and community. His works have been exhibited in a number of galleries including Omenka Gallery ('Insanity' group show, Lagos, 2016), Retro Africa ('In the making', Abuja, 2018), Bricklane Gallery ('Contemporealism', London, 2019), Bomb Factory Art Foundation ('Journey Mercies', London, 2021) and Thinkspace ('Ubuntu', LA, 2021). His works were showcased at ART X Lagos on several occasions, at 154 London, and Prizm Art Fair, in Miami. He has worked on multiple projects with respected international brands like Martell Cognac, McMillan Publishers, Flight Logistics, and many others. Ken enjoys expanding his perspective -and ours, rarely ever leaving anything to chance, but rather proceeding from a place of joy, and intentional care. He is constantly revitalizing his practice by challenging modes of Black representation. His oeuvres do not just encompass various forms of painting but most recently transcends into photography, sculpture, installation, NFT and video Education MA Painting, Royal College of Art Select Exhibitions/Awards Awards: 2019: The Future Awards Africa Prize for Art Exhibitions: 2022, SCOPE Art Fair Miami, 2020, Prizm International Art Fair Miami, 2020, 1-54 African Art Fair New York, Portrait of a Top boy and Summer exhibition Royal Academy Gallery Representation Retro Africa Gallery and Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery. Laura Hope Eye Spy I, 2023 Mixed media on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by Verity Babbs About My work is centred around unspoken emotions and quiet inner lives. Created from my own staged photographs of models, it is often a response to memories, relationships and personal crisis. Through composition, cropping and reversing the image, I strive to convey an uneasy narrative that shines a light on subtle feelings that often hide in the shadows. With hints to another era, my figures live in a world that is both nostalgic and present. I sit on the fence between painting and drawing - feeling that 'painting' better describes my process but knowing that 'drawing' is my method of creation. My training as an illustrator as well as my time working as a memorial artist (hand etching onto granite) have cemented the importance of line and mark making in my practice. Daisy Collingridge Facescape (Miniature 1) Textiles and wood on paper Signed on Verso 10.5 x 15 x 1.7cm (4 x 5¾ x ¾ in.) This lot has been curated by Millie Foster About Daisy is a multi-disciplinary work investigating the human form as the central theme. The work sits in a place of tension between, sculpture, performance and art. The 'flesh suits' are an exploration of fabric, form and flesh. Their tactile fabric bodies and inviting colour exaggerate the warmth and softness of flesh- these elements which signify a living thing. They are visceral. There is a desire to touch. Fabric offers skin like qualities that traditional sculpting materials do not have. Laura Hope Eye Spy II, 2023 Mixed media on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by Verity Babbs About My work is centred around unspoken emotions and quiet inner lives. Lot 53

Rebecca Hardaker Appreciate me no.1, 2023 Watercolour pencil on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by Verity Babbs About Rebecca Hardaker's practice is an intersection between painting and drawing. Executed with an unabashed fondness for innocence, each canvas is an ensemble of abstract mark making and figures. Rebecca often never has a plan when she starts a new painting. One mark provokes another and so gives birth to a landscape of abstraction. She moves around the canvas, filling it with painterly strokes and line. Laura Jane Scott Considered Interior paint on card Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.)   This lot has been curated by Katherine Kittoe About Laura Jane Scott is an artist working in minimalist, geometric abstraction and colour-field painting. Her desire for formal simplicity through geometric form and her striking use of colour enables her to produce work where painting explores a model of architectural form and where colour embodies a physical structure. The resulting work is a refined visual vocabulary of form and colour. "My aim is always to express an idea as simply and as elegantly as possible. To strip everything back to only what is necessary to communicate that idea. My work is primarily an exploration of balance, of positive and negative space, of presence and absence." Education Laura studied at Camberwell College of Arts and Ravensbourne University London. Select Exhibitions/Awards Laura's work has been exhibited widely over the past seven years in London, Edinburgh, New York and Hamburg and has featured twice in the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition. Gallery Representation Laura is represented by Kittoe Contemporary in London and frequently shows work with &Gallery in Edinburgh. She also sells work independently and accepts commissions for large scale installations. Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork Laura has submitted two works to Art on a Postcard Winter 2023. The first is a miniature of her relief series 'Necessary Limits' which explores colour, balance and form within the confines of some self-imposed boundaries.   The second piece 'Considered' is a minimalist painting of saturated, clean-edged shapes using colours from Laura's signature palette and the component shapes that often appear in her work.   You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works. In doing so, you endanger our relationships with artists, and directly jeopardise the charitable work we do.

I think about the quiet beauty in the everyday, particularly in the natural commonplace things, rarely celebrated. My paintings are inspired by what I see around me: the form of a tree; the long lines of twining stems; the intricacies of birds in flight. Often I am reminded of a poem or a piece of music and revisit an idea resonating there. Before the layers of gesso, I draw in charcoal or acrylic and the subsequent gilding or linseed oil shine in contrast. I paint in oil from my photographs, tracing the lines loosely with a fine square ended brush, observing the tonal shifts, and the marks build up the complicated patterns of the whole. Using traditional materials, my work draws attention to these fleeting moments and underscores their value." The process is fast and intuitive, unencumbered by rules. Her palette is bright and dreamy. Just as she never sets out a plan, Rebecca doesn't cancel out mistakes. These are part of the composition, which is the artist's immediate translation of her cerebral vision giving way for to whimsical uncertainty. London SE1 (commended work) Gallery Representation Beaux Arts Bath, Cornwall Contemporary Penzance, and Eastwood Fine Art Hampshire Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork "Walking my dogs in the early morning I notice the small seasonal shifts. Using traditional materials, my work draws attention to these fleeting moments and underscores their value." Lot 553

Jon Burgerman Roman Ink and Crayon on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by Frankie Shea About Jon Burgerman (b. 1979 UK) is a New York-based British artist whose works have been acquired by prestigious public collections such as London's Victoria and Albert Museum and the OÖ-Kultur Museum in Linz, Austria. His art has been described by critics as "bright, and intuitive, focused on the visceral energy of play as a tenet of communication" (Cate McQuaid, The Boston Globe, July 2021). Jon's highly distinctive fuzzy-edged characters in day-glo bright pinks, yellows, greens and blues epitomise the paradoxes of contemporary life. Their seemingly simple googly eyes betray a range of emotional complexities and anxieties, with comically distressed expressions and collapsing forms underlined by titles such as Xanax, Dualist, Fortitude and Chameleon (2022). At once friendly and scary, happy and sad, Jon achieves a form of emotional Cubism that relates directly to "a generational mental health crisis, [exacerbated] by climate anxiety, the pandemic, the narrowing of political choice and financial insecurity. And yet, there is always an elastic resilience, a wry smile, joy in the process and chance of hope" (Jon Burgerman personal statement 2022). Each of Jon's paintings reveals a studied balance of contrasts: hazy, indistinct huddles and isolated, lonely forms; crude graffitied marks versus fluid, soft forms achieved with an aerosol can. Improvised rhythms informed by electronic music permeate his works, creating staccato visual melodies that allow each work to perform satisfactorily to both eye and ear in a continuum of Miró and Kandinsky. Jon has developed a new visual language all of his own, painting with a hitherto unknown simplicity and captivating optimism that allows his subjects to establish a remarkable immediacy and intimacy with his viewers, in the same vein Keith Haring mastered. "I want to make expressive and open works, where the viewer can not only play with narrative strands suggested by the characters and forms but also emotionally connect with the textures, colours and very fabric of the painting itself." Faith XLVII Untitled (1) Red Wax Crayon on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by Frankie Shea About Liberty's journey as an artist began on the streets of South Africa in 1997, as a young graffiti writer known as Faith47. She rose to prominence on the international street art scene before becoming widely recognised for her multidisciplinary artistic practice. Monumental and intimate, private and public, her artwork takes the form of murals, sculptures, video installations, tapestries and drawings. Deconstructing notions of value and place, investigating forms of domination, she explores the shapes of human perception. In quest of the divine, she expresses a longing for a deeper connection to the wisdoms of the natural world. There is too the active investigation and questioning of the human condition, its deviant histories and our own inherent existential search.
