Walter William Burgess, RE (1855-1908) ‘Design for Reredos Decoration to be executed in Venetian Mosiacs’. Pen & ink and watercolour. Titled to label verso, 43cm x 62cm, arch-top. Burgess was an etcher and architect and exhibited at the leading London galleries from 1874, chiefly at the Royal Academy. Elected R.E. 1883, his membership ceased on 18th August 1908. He lived in Chelsea, London. He was called ‘The Pretty Burgess’ to differentiate him from William Burgess, ARA, the greater architect, who was ‘not pretty’.

Coward’s character of `Hernia Whittlebot” was a satire on Edith Sitwell. The poems were subsequently published in 1924 in Coward’s “Chelsea Buns”. (1)

The two tea bowls and saucers - the pattern 66 saucer with minor crack

The pair of plates in good condition
