Walter William Burgess, RE (1855-1908) ‘Design for Reredos Decoration to be executed in Venetian Mosiacs’. Pen & ink and watercolour. Titled to label verso, 43cm x 62cm, arch-top. Burgess was an etcher and architect and exhibited at the leading London galleries from 1874, chiefly at the Royal Academy. Elected R.E. 1883, his membership ceased on 18th August 1908. He lived in Chelsea, London. He was called ‘The Pretty Burgess’ to differentiate him from William Burgess, ARA, the greater architect, who was ‘not pretty’.

Coward (Noel). Poems by Hernia Whittlebot, with an Appreciation by Noel Coward, [1923], 29pp., with tipped-in errata slip printed in red to upper cover, original grey wrappers, spine split, covers near-detached, rubbed, slim 4to. Coward’s character of `Hernia Whittlebot” was a satire on Edith Sitwell. The poems were subsequently published in 1924 in Coward’s “Chelsea Buns”. (1)

A RARE CHELSEA IMARI STYLE PLATE WITH BLUE ANCHOR MARK AND A PAIR OF CHELSEA-DERBY PLATES. the first enamelled in a typical palette and richly gilt with chrysanthemums and bunches of grapes in panelled border with mon and scalloped gilt rim, 24.5cm diam, painted anchor in underglaze blue within a double circle, the pair of plates painted with loose bouquets in Smith`s blue and grapevine border, painted crown over D, c1777-84. ++ Chelsea plate previously rivetted, the metal repairs now removed and the pieces neatly glued together without loss. The pair of plates in good condition
A CHELSEA ROCOCO MOULDED WINE COOLER, RED ANCHOR PERIOD. finely enamelled with scattered flowers beneath the red-brown rim, 26cm h, painted anchor in red, c1758. ++ One of the shell handles broken off and previously riveted, the rivets now removed and cleanly refixed into position with old glue residue and tiny loss at either end. Also a star crack in one side but free from any modern or professional restoration
